Acts 25
1 Festus therefore, having come into the province, after three days went up to Urishlim from Qesarya.
Lors donc que Festus fut arrivé dans sa province, il monta, au bout de trois jours, de Césarée à Jérusalem,
2 Then the high priest and the principal men of the Jews informed him against Paul, and they urged him,
et les grands prêtres et les principaux des Juifs lui adressèrent une plainte contre Paul, et ils le sollicitaient,
3 asking a favor against him, that he would summon him to Urishlim; plotting to kill him on the way.
en demandant contre celui-ci qu'il leur accordât la grâce de le faire venir à Jérusalem, parce qu'ils avaient dressé un guet-apens pour le tuer sur la route.
4 However Festus answered that Paul should be kept in custody at Qesarya, and that he himself was about to depart shortly.
Mais Festus répliqua que Paul était en prison à Césarée et que lui-même allait bientôt repartir:
5 "Let them therefore," he said, "that are in power among you go down with me, and if there is anything wrong in the man, let them accuse him."
« Que les principaux d'entre vous, ajouta-t-il, descendent donc avec moi, et, s'il y a quelque crime à la charge de cet homme, qu'ils l'accusent. »
6 When he had stayed among them more than eight or ten days, he went down to Qesarya, and on the next day he sat on the judgment seat, and commanded Paul to be brought.
Puis, après être demeuré parmi eux pas plus de huit à dix jours, il revint à Césarée, et, s'étant, dès le lendemain, assis sur son tribunal, il ordonna qu'on amenât Paul.
7 When he had come, the Jews who had come down from Urishlim stood around him, bringing against him many and grievous charges which they could not prove,
Quand il fut arrivé, les Juifs, qui étaient venus de Jérusalem, l'entourèrent en l'accablant de nombreuses et graves inculpations qu'ils ne pouvaient prouver,
8 while he said in his defense, "Neither against the law of the Jews, nor against the temple, nor against Caesar, have I sinned at all."
parce que Paul se justifiait de tout méfait, soit contre la loi des Juifs, soit contre le temple, soit contre l'empereur.
9 But Festus, desiring to gain favor with the Jews, answered Paul and said, "Are you willing to go up to Urishlim, and be judged by me there concerning these things?"
Mais Festus, voulant s'assurer la gratitude des Juifs, répliqua à Paul: « Veux-tu monter à Jérusalem pour y être jugé là-dessus, en ma présence? »
10 But Paul said, "I am standing before Caesar's judgment seat, where I ought to be tried. I have done no wrong to the Jews, as you also know very well.
Mais Paul dit: « C'est devant le tribunal de l'empereur que je comparais, c'est là que je dois être jugé; je n'ai commis nulle offense contre les Juifs, comme toi-même aussi tu le sais mieux que personne.
11 For if I have done wrong, and have committed anything worthy of death, I do not refuse to die; but if none of those things is true that they accuse me of, no one can give me up to them. I appeal to Caesar."
Si donc je suis coupable, et si j'ai fait quelque chose qui mérite la mort, je ne refuse point de mourir; mais, si rien de ce dont ceux-ci m'accusent n'est vrai, personne ne peut me livrer à eux. J'en appelle à l'empereur. »
12 Then Festus, when he had conferred with the council, answered, "You have appealed to Caesar. To Caesar you shall go."
Alors Festus, après avoir conféré avec son conseil, répliqua: « Tu en as appelé à l'empereur, tu iras devant l'empereur. »
13 Now when some days had passed, Agrippa the King and Bernice arrived at Qesarya, and greeted Festus.
Cependant, au bout de quelques jours, le roi Agrippa et Bérénice vinrent à Césarée pour saluer Festus.
14 As they stayed there many days, Festus laid Paul's case before the king, saying, "There is a certain man left a prisoner by Felix;
Et, comme ils faisaient un assez long séjour, Festus exposa au roi l'affaire de Paul en disant: « Il y a un certain personnage que Félix a laissé prisonnier,
15 about whom, when I was at Urishlim, the chief priests and the Jewish elders informed me, asking for a sentence against him.
et contre lequel, lorsque je suis allé à Jérusalem, les grands prêtres et les anciens des Juifs m'ont adressé une plainte, en demandant sa condamnation;
16 To whom I answered that it is not the custom of the Romans to give up anyone before the accused has met the accusers face to face, and has had opportunity to make his defense against the charge.
je leur ai répondu que ce n'est pas l'usage des Romains de livrer un homme, avant que l'accusé ait été mis en présence de ses accusateurs et qu'il ait obtenu la faculté de se justifier de l'accusation.
17 When therefore they had come together here, I did not delay, but on the next day sat on the judgment seat, and commanded the man to be brought.
Eux donc s'étant réunis ici je ne perdis pas un moment, et, dès le jour suivant, m'étant assis sur mon tribunal, j'ordonnai qu'on amenât cet homme.
18 Concerning whom, when the accusers stood up, they brought no charge of such things as I supposed;
Les accusateurs ayant comparu n'articulèrent contre lui aucun des crimes auxquels je m'attendais,
19 but had certain questions against him about their own religion, and about one Yeshua, who was dead, whom Paul affirmed to be alive.
mais ils l'attaquaient sur des questions relatives à leur propre religion, et à un certain Jésus mort que Paul prétendait être vivant.
20 Being perplexed how to inquire concerning these things, I asked whether he was willing to go to Urishlim and there be judged concerning these matters.
Pour moi, comme j'étais fort embarrassé pour faire une enquête sur ces questions, je lui demandai s'il voulait aller à Jérusalem pour y être jugé là-dessus;
21 But when Paul had appealed to be kept for the decision of the emperor, I commanded him to be kept until I could send him to Caesar."
mais Paul ayant interjeté un appel qui le constitue prisonnier en réservant sa cause à la connaissance de Sa Majesté, j'ai ordonné qu'il demeurât en prison jusques à ce que je l'envoyasse à l'empereur. »
22 Agrippa said to Festus, "I also would like to hear the man myself." "Tomorrow," he said, "you shall hear him."
Et Agrippa dit à Festus: « Je désirerais pour ma part entendre aussi cet homme. » — « Demain, dit-il, tu l'entendras. »
23 So on the next day, when Agrippa and Bernice had come with great pomp, and they had entered into the place of hearing with the commanding officers and principal men of the city, at the command of Festus, Paul was brought in.
Le lendemain donc, Agrippa et Bérénice étant arrivés en grande pompe, et s'étant rendus dans la salle d'audience avec les commandants militaires et les principaux personnages de la ville, Paul fut introduit sur l'ordre de Festus.
24 And Festus said, "King Agrippa, and all people who are here present with us, you see this man, about whom the whole assembly of the Jews petitioned me, both at Urishlim and here, crying that he ought not to live any longer.
Et Festus dit: « Roi Aprippa, et vous tous qui êtes présents, vous voyez cet homme au sujet duquel toute la multitude des Juifs m'a sollicité, soit à Jérusalem, soit ici, en criant qu'il ne devait plus rester en vie;
25 But when I found that he had committed nothing worthy of death, and as he himself appealed to the emperor I determined to send him.
mais, pour moi, j'ai compris qu'il n'avait rien fait qui méritât la mort; cependant, comme Paul lui-même en a appelé à Sa Majesté, j'ai résolu de le faire partir.
26 Of whom I have no certain thing to write to my lord. Therefore I have brought him forth before you, and especially before you, King Agrippa, that, after examination, I may have something to write.
Je ne sais pas trop qu'écrire de positif sur son compte à notre maître; c'est pourquoi je l'ai fait comparaître devant vous, et principalement devant toi, roi Agrippa, afin que, lorsqu'il aura été examiné, je puisse écrire quelque chose;
27 For it seems to me unreasonable, in sending a prisoner, not to also specify the charges against him."
car il me paraît absurde, en expédiant un prisonnier, de ne pas indiquer en même temps les crimes dont on l'accuse. »
