Acts 21
1 When it happened that we had parted from them and had set sail, we came with a straight course to Cos, and the next day to Rhodes, and from there to Patara.
tai rvisṛṣṭāḥ santo vayaṁ potaṁ bāhayitvā ṛjumārgeṇa koṣam upadvīpam āgatya pare'hani rodiyopadvīpam āgacchāma tatastasmāt pātārāyām upātiṣṭhāma|
2 Having found a ship crossing over to Phoenicia, we went aboard, and set sail.
tatra phainīkiyādeśagāminam potamekaṁ prāpya tamāruhya gatavantaḥ|
3 When we had come in sight of Cyprus, leaving it on the left hand, we sailed to Syria, and landed at Tsur, for there the ship was to unload her cargo.
kupropadvīpaṁ dṛṣṭvā taṁ savyadiśi sthāpayitvā suriyādeśaṁ gatvā potasthadravyāṇyavarohayituṁ soranagare lāgitavantaḥ|
4 Having found the disciples, we stayed there seven days. These said to Paul through the Rukha, that he should not go up to Urishlim.
tatra śiṣyagaṇasya sākṣātkaraṇāya vayaṁ tatra saptadināni sthitavantaḥ paścātte pavitreṇātmanā paulaṁ vyāharan tvaṁ yirūśālamnagaraṁ mā gamaḥ|
5 When it happened that we had accomplished the days, we departed and went on our journey. They all, with wives and children, brought us on our way until we were out of the city. And after kneeling down on the beach and praying,
tatasteṣu saptasu dineṣu yāpiteṣu satsu vayaṁ tasmāt sthānāt nijavartmanā gatavantaḥ, tasmāt te sabālavṛddhavanitā asmābhiḥ saha nagarasya parisaraparyyantam āgatāḥ paścādvayaṁ jaladhitaṭe jānupātaṁ prārthayāmahi|
6 we said farewell to one another. And we went on board the ship, and they returned to their own.
tataḥ parasparaṁ visṛṣṭāḥ santo vayaṁ potaṁ gatāste tu svasvagṛhaṁ pratyāgatavantaḥ|
7 When we had finished the voyage from Tsur, we arrived at Ptolemais. We greeted the brothers, and stayed with them one day.
vayaṁ soranagarāt nāvā prasthāya talimāyinagaram upātiṣṭhāma tatrāsmākaṁ samudrīyamārgasyānto'bhavat tatra bhrātṛgaṇaṁ namaskṛtya dinamekaṁ taiḥ sārddham uṣatavantaḥ|
8 On the next day, we departed and came to Qesarya. We entered into the house of Philipus the evangelist, who was one of the seven, and stayed with him.
pare 'hani paulastasya saṅgino vayañca pratiṣṭhamānāḥ kaisariyānagaram āgatya susaṁvādapracārakānāṁ saptajanānāṁ philipanāmna ekasya gṛhaṁ praviśyāvatiṣṭhāma|
9 Now this man had four virgin daughters who prophesied.
tasya catasro duhitaro'nūḍhā bhaviṣyadvādinya āsan|
10 As we stayed there some days, a certain prophet named Agavus came down from Yehuda.
tatrāsmāsu bahudināni proṣiteṣu yihūdīyadeśād āgatyāgābanāmā bhaviṣyadvādī samupasthitavān|
11 Coming to us, and taking Paul's belt, he bound his own feet and hands, and said, "Thus says the Rukha d'Qudsha: 'So will the Jews in Urishlim bind the man who owns this belt, and will deliver him into the hands of non-Jewish people.'"
sosmākaṁ samīpametya paulasya kaṭibandhanaṁ gṛhītvā nijahastāpādān baddhvā bhāṣitavān yasyedaṁ kaṭibandhanaṁ taṁ yihūdīyalokā yirūśālamanagara itthaṁ baddhvā bhinnadeśīyānāṁ kareṣu samarpayiṣyantīti vākyaṁ pavitra ātmā kathayati|
12 When we heard these things, both we and the people of that place urged him not to go up to Urishlim.
etādṛśīṁ kathāṁ śrutvā vayaṁ tannagaravāsino bhrātaraśca yirūśālamaṁ na yātuṁ paulaṁ vyanayāmahi;
13 Then Paul answered, "What are you doing, weeping and breaking my heart? For I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die at Urishlim for the name of the Lord Yeshua."
kintu sa pratyāvādīt, yūyaṁ kiṁ kurutha? kiṁ krandanena mamāntaḥkaraṇaṁ vidīrṇaṁ kariṣyatha? prabho ryīśo rnāmno nimittaṁ yirūśālami baddho bhavituṁ kevala tanna prāṇān dātumapi sasajjosmi|
14 When he would not be persuaded, we ceased, saying, "The Lord's will be done."
tenāsmākaṁ kathāyām agṛhītāyām īśvarasya yathecchā tathaiva bhavatvityuktvā vayaṁ nirasyāma|
15 After these days we took up our baggage and went up to Urishlim.
pare'hani pātheyadravyāṇi gṛhītvā yirūśālamaṁ prati yātrām akurmma|
16 Some of the disciples from Qesarya also went with us, bringing one Mnason of Cyprus, an early disciple, with whom we would stay.
tataḥ kaisariyānagaranivāsinaḥ katipayāḥ śiṣyā asmābhiḥ sārddham itvā kṛprīyena mnāsannāmnā yena prācīnaśiṣyena sārddham asmābhi rvastavyaṁ tasya samīpam asmān nītavantaḥ|
17 When we had come to Urishlim, the brothers received us gladly.
asmāsu yirūśālamyupasthiteṣu tatrasthabhrātṛgaṇo'smān āhlādena gṛhītavān|
18 The day following, Paul went in with us to Yaquv; and all the elders were present.
parasmin divase paule'smābhiḥ saha yākūbo gṛhaṁ praviṣṭe lokaprācīnāḥ sarvve tatra pariṣadi saṁsthitāḥ|
19 When he had greeted them, he reported one by one the things which God had worked among the non-Jewish people through his ministry.
anantaraṁ sa tān natvā svīyapracāraṇena bhinnadeśīyān pratīśvaro yāni karmmāṇi sādhitavān tadīyāṁ kathām anukramāt kathitavān|
20 They, when they heard it, glorified God. They said to him, "You see, brother, how many thousands there are among the Jews of those who have believed, and they are all zealous for the Law.
iti śrutvā te prabhuṁ dhanyaṁ procya vākyamidam abhāṣanta, he bhrāta ryihūdīyānāṁ madhye bahusahasrāṇi lokā viśvāsina āsate kintu te sarvve vyavasthāmatācāriṇa etat pratyakṣaṁ paśyasi|
21 They have been informed about you, that you teach all the Jews who are among the non-Jews to forsake Mushe, telling them not to circumcise their children neither to walk after the customs.
śiśūnāṁ tvakchedanādyācaraṇaṁ pratiṣidhya tvaṁ bhinnadeśanivāsino yihūdīyalokān mūsāvākyam aśraddhātum upadiśasīti taiḥ śrutamasti|
22 What then? The multitude must certainly meet. They will hear that you have come.
tvamatrāgatosīti vārttāṁ samākarṇya jananivaho militvāvaśyamevāgamiṣyati; ataeva kiṁ karaṇīyam? atra vayaṁ mantrayitvā samupāyaṁ tvāṁ vadāmastaṁ tvamācara|
23 Therefore do what we tell you. We have four men who have taken a vow.
vrataṁ karttuṁ kṛtasaṅkalpā ye'smāṁka catvāro mānavāḥ santi
24 Take them, and purify yourself with them, and pay their expenses for them, that they may shave their heads. Then all will know that there is no truth in the things that they have been informed about you, but that you yourself also walk keeping the Law.
tān gṛhītvā taiḥ sahitaḥ svaṁ śuciṁ kuru tathā teṣāṁ śiromuṇḍane yo vyayo bhavati taṁ tvaṁ dehi| tathā kṛte tvadīyācāre yā janaśruti rjāyate sālīkā kintu tvaṁ vidhiṁ pālayan vyavasthānusāreṇevācarasīti te bhotsante|
25 But concerning the non-Jewish who believe, we have written our decision that they should keep themselves from food offered to idols, from blood, from strangled things, and from sexual immorality."
bhinnadeśīyānāṁ viśvāsilokānāṁ nikaṭe vayaṁ patraṁ likhitvetthaṁ sthirīkṛtavantaḥ, devaprasādabhojanaṁ raktaṁ galapīḍanamāritaprāṇibhojanaṁ vyabhicāraścaitebhyaḥ svarakṣaṇavyatirekeṇa teṣāmanyavidhipālanaṁ karaṇīyaṁ na|
26 Then Paul took the men, and the next day, purified himself and went with them into the temple, declaring the fulfillment of the days of purification, until the offering was offered for every one of them.
tataḥ paulastān mānuṣānādāya parasmin divase taiḥ saha śuci rbhūtvā mandiraṁ gatvā śaucakarmmaṇo dineṣu sampūrṇeṣu teṣām ekaikārthaṁ naivedyādyutsargo bhaviṣyatīti jñāpitavān|
27 When the seven days were almost completed, the Jews from Asia, when they saw him in the temple, stirred up all the crowd and laid hands on him,
teṣu saptasu dineṣu samāptakalpeṣu āśiyādeśanivāsino yihūdīyāstaṁ madhyemandiraṁ vilokya jananivahasya manaḥsu kupravṛttiṁ janayitvā taṁ dhṛtvā
28 crying out, "Men of Israyel, help. This is the man who teaches all men everywhere against the people, and the Law, and this place. Moreover, he also brought Greeks into the temple, and has defiled this holy place."
proccaiḥ prāvocan, he isrāyellokāḥ sarvve sāhāyyaṁ kuruta| yo manuja eteṣāṁ lokānāṁ mūsāvyavasthāyā etasya sthānasyāpi viparītaṁ sarvvatra sarvvān śikṣayati sa eṣaḥ; viśeṣataḥ sa bhinnadeśīyalokān mandiram ānīya pavitrasthānametad apavitramakarot|
29 For they had previously seen Trophimus, the Ephesian, with him in the city, and they supposed that Paul had brought him into the temple.
pūrvvaṁ te madhyenagaram iphiṣanagarīyaṁ traphimaṁ paulena sahitaṁ dṛṣṭavanta etasmāt paulastaṁ mandiramadhyam ānayad ityanvamimata|
30 All the city was moved, and the people ran together. They seized Paul and dragged him out of the temple. Immediately the doors were shut.
ataeva sarvvasmin nagare kalahotpannatvāt dhāvanto lokā āgatya paulaṁ dhṛtvā mandirasya bahirākṛṣyānayan tatkṣaṇād dvārāṇi sarvvāṇi ca ruddhāni|
31 As they were trying to kill him, news came up to the commanding officer of the regiment that all Urishlim was in an uproar.
teṣu taṁ hantumudyateṣu yirūśālamnagare mahānupadravo jāta iti vārttāyāṁ sahasrasenāpateḥ karṇagocarībhūtāyāṁ satyāṁ sa tatkṣaṇāt sainyāni senāpatigaṇañca gṛhītvā javenāgatavān|
32 Immediately he took soldiers and centurions, and ran down to them. They, when they saw the chief captain and the soldiers, stopped beating Paul.
tato lokāḥ senāgaṇena saha sahasrasenāpatim āgacchantaṁ dṛṣṭvā paulatāḍanāto nyavarttanta|
33 Then the commanding officer came near, arrested him, commanded him to be bound with two chains, and inquired who he was and what he had done.
sa sahasrasenāpatiḥ sannidhāvāgamya paulaṁ dhṛtvā śṛṅkhaladvayena baddham ādiśya tān pṛṣṭavān eṣa kaḥ? kiṁ karmma cāyaṁ kṛtavān?
34 Some shouted one thing, and some another, among the crowd. When he could not find out the truth because of the noise, he commanded him to be brought into the barracks.
tato janasamūhasya kaścid ekaprakāraṁ kaścid anyaprakāraṁ vākyam araut sa tatra satyaṁ jñātum kalahakāraṇād aśaktaḥ san taṁ durgaṁ netum ājñāpayat|
35 When he came to the stairs, it happened that he was carried by the soldiers because of the violence of the crowd;
teṣu sopānasyopari prāpteṣu lokānāṁ sāhasakāraṇāt senāgaṇaḥ paulamuttolya nītavān|
36 for the crowd of the people followed after, crying out, "Away with him."
tataḥ sarvve lokāḥ paścādgāminaḥ santa enaṁ durīkuruteti vākyam uccairavadan|
37 As Paul was about to be brought into the barracks, he asked the commanding officer, "May I speak something to you?" He said, "Do you know Greek?
paulasya durgānayanasamaye sa tasmai sahasrasenāpataye kathitavān, bhavataḥ purastāt kathāṁ kathayituṁ kim anumanyate? sa tamapṛcchat tvaṁ kiṁ yūnānīyāṁ bhāṣāṁ jānāsi?
38 Are you not then the Egyptian, who before these days stirred up to sedition and led out into the wilderness the four thousand men of the Assassins?"
yo misarīyo janaḥ pūrvvaṁ virodhaṁ kṛtvā catvāri sahasrāṇi ghātakān saṅginaḥ kṛtvā vipinaṁ gatavān tvaṁ kiṁ saeva na bhavasi?
39 But Paul said, "I am a Jew, from Tarsus in Cilicia, a citizen of no insignificant city. I beg you, allow me to speak to the people."
tadā paulo'kathayat ahaṁ kilikiyādeśasya tārṣanagarīyo yihūdīyo, nāhaṁ sāmānyanagarīyo mānavaḥ; ataeva vinaye'haṁ lākānāṁ samakṣaṁ kathāṁ kathayituṁ māmanujānīṣva|
40 When he had given him permission, Paul, standing on the stairs, beckoned with his hand to the people. When there was a great silence, he spoke to them in the Hebrew language, saying,
tenānujñātaḥ paulaḥ sopānopari tiṣṭhan hasteneṅgitaṁ kṛtavān, tasmāt sarvve susthirā abhavan| tadā paula ibrīyabhāṣayā kathayitum ārabhata,
