< Titus 1 >
1 To Titus, my true son in a common faith, from Paul, a slave of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God’s elect, and to the knowledge of the truth which goes with piety;
Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God’s chosen ones and the knowledge of the truth which is according to godliness,
2 I write in hope of life eternal which God who never lies, promised before times eternal, (aiōnios )
in hope of the consummate (aiōnios ) life, which God, who cannnot lie, promised before time began;
3 but manifested in his own time; that word of his in proclaiming which I have been entrusted by command of God our Saviour.
but in his own time revealed his word in the message with which I was entrusted according to the commandment of God our Savior,
4 Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Saviour.
to Titus, my true child according to a common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Savior.
5 I left you in Crete for this reason, that you might set right the things left unfinished, and appoint presbyters in every city as I had instructed you;
I left you in Crete for this reason, that you would set in order the things that were lacking and appoint elders in every city, as I directed you—
6 men who are blameless, the husband of one wife, with believing children who are not accused of riot or insubordination.
if anyone is blameless, the husband of one wife, having children who believe, who are not accused of loose or unruly behavior.
7 For indeed a presiding officer, as God’s steward, ought to be blameless, not self-willed or quick-tempered, not a drunkard or violent, or greedy of filthy lucre;
For the overseer must be blameless, as God’s steward, not self-pleasing, not easily angered, not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for dishonest gain;
8 but he must be hospitable, a lover of the good, sober-minded, just, holy, self-controlled.
but given to hospitality, a lover of good, sober minded, fair, holy, self-controlled,
9 He must hold to the faithful word according to the teaching, so that he may be able both to encourage by sound teaching, and to confute our opponents.
holding to the faithful word which is according to the teaching, that he may be able to exhort in the sound doctrine, and to convict those who contradict him.
10 For there are many individuals who are unruly, empty talkers and deceivers, particularly those of the circumcision, whose mouths must be stopped;
For there are also many unruly men, vain talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision,
11 for they upset whole households and, for filthy lucre’s sake, teach what they ought not to teach.
whose mouths must be stopped: men who overthrow whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for dishonest gain’s sake.
12 By one of their own number, by a prophet of their own, it has been said, "Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, idle gluttons."
One of them, a prophet of their own, said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, and idle gluttons.”
13 This testimony is true. So rebuke them sharply,
This testimony is true. For this cause, reprove them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith,
14 so as to make them sound in the faith, not giving heed to Jewish myths and commandments of men who turn away from the truth.
not paying attention to Jewish fables and commandments of men who turn away from the truth.
15 All things are pure to the pure; but to the contaminated and the faithless nothing is pure, nay, their very minds and consciences are tainted.
To the pure, all things are pure, but to those who are defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure; but both their mind and their conscience are defiled.
16 They profess to know God, but by their deeds they disown him; in that they are detestable, disobedient, and reprobate for good work of any sort.
They profess that they know God, but by their deeds they deny him, being abominable, disobedient, and unfit for any good work.
