Matthew 3
1 In those days came John the Baptist preaching in the desert of Judea;
En ces temps-là parut Jean-Baptiste, prêchant dans le désert de Judée,
2 "Repent," said he, "for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."
et disant: «Repentez-vous, car le royaume des cieux est proche.»
3 This Johnit was of whom it was said through Isaiah, the prophet, The voice of one who cries aloud in the desert, "Prepare a way for the Lord, Make the paths straight for him."
C'est de lui que parle Esaïe, le prophète, quand il dit: C'est une voix qui crie au désert: «Préparez le chemin du Seigneur, faites-lui des sentiers droits.»
4 This Johnwore a garment of camel’s hair, and a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey.
Jean avait un vêtement de poil de chameau, et une ceinture de cuir autour des reins; il se nourrissait de sauterelles et de miel sauvage.
5 Then Jerusalem began to go out to him, and all Judea, and the whole neighborhood of the Jordan,
Les habitants de Jérusalem, de toute la Judée et de tout le pays qui avoisine le Jourdain, se rendaient vers lui,
6 and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.
et se faisaient baptiser par lui dans le Jourdain, confessant leurs péchés.
7 But when Johnsaw that many of the Pharisees and Sadducees were coming for baptism, he said. "O brood of vipers! Who has warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
Or, Jean voyant un grand nombre de pharisiens et de sadducéens, qui venaient se faire baptiser, leur dit: «Race de vipères, qui vous a appris à fuir la colère à venir?
8 Then bring forth fruit worthy of repentance.
Produisez donc du fruit digne de la repentance,
9 And do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father’-I tell you that out of these very stones God is able to raise up descendants for Abraham.
et ne croyez pas dire en vous-mêmes: «Nous avons pour père Abraham; car je vous dis que de ces pierres, Dieu peut susciter des enfants à Abraham.
10 And already the axe is lying at the roots of the trees. Any tree, therefore, that does not bear good fruit is cut down and cast into the fire.
Déjà la cognée est mise à la racine des arbres; tout arbre donc qui ne produit pas de bon fruit, va être coupé et jeté au feu.
11 I indeed am baptizing you in water, unto repentance; but One is coming after me, mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit and in fire.
Pour moi, je vous baptise d'eau en vue de la repentance; mais celui qui vient après moi, est plus puissant que moi, et je ne suis pas digne de lui porter ses sandales: c'est lui qui vous baptisera d'esprit saint et de feu.
12 His winnowing-fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse the threshing-floor. He will store his wheat in the granary, but will burn up the chaff in unquenchable fire."
Il a son van à la main, et il nettoiera son aire; il amassera son blé dans le grenier, mais il brûlera la paille dans un feu qui ne s'éteint point.»
13 At that very time Jesus was on his way from Galilee to the Jordan, to John, to be baptized by him.
Alors Jésus arriva de Galilée au Jourdain vers Jean, pour se faire baptiser par lui.
14 But he tried to prevent him. "It is I," he said, "who need to be baptized by you, and are you coming to me?"
Mais Jean s'y opposait en disant: «C'est moi qui ai besoin d'être baptisé par toi, et tu viens à moi!»
15 But Jesus answered, "Permit it now, for so it is fitting for us to fulfill every religious duty."
Jésus lui répondit: «Laisse-moi faire seulement, car il convient que nous accomplissions ainsi tout ce qui est juste.»
16 Then he consented. And after Jesus was baptized, as soon as he rose out of the water, lo! the heavens opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon him,
Alors Jean le laissa faire. Jésus, ayant été baptisé, sortit immédiatement de l’eau; et voici, les cieux s'ouvrirent à lui, et il vit l'Esprit de Dieu descendre comme une colombe et venir sur lui.
17 while a voice from heaven said, "This is my son, the beloved, In whom I delight."
Et une Voix sortit des cieux, disant: «Celui-ci est mon Fils bien-aimé, en qui j'ai mis toute mon affection.»
