Galatians 4
1 What I mean is this. As long as the heir is a child, he differs in no respect from a slave, though he be the owner of the whole inheritance;
Ich sage aber: Solange der Erbe unmündig ist, so ist zwischen ihm und einem Knecht kein Unterschied, ob er wohl ein Herr ist aller Güter;
2 but is under the control of guardians and trustees, until the time appointed by his father.
sondern er ist unter den Vormündern und Pflegern bis auf die Zeit, die der Vater bestimmt hat.
3 So we Jews also, when we were children, were held in bondage under the empty externalities of the world.
Also auch wir, da wir unmündig waren, waren wir gefangen unter den äußerlichen Satzungen.
4 But when the fulness of time was come God sent forth his Son, born of a woman, born under law,
Da aber die Zeit erfüllet ward, sandte Gott seinen Sohn, geboren von einem Weibe und unter das Gesetz getan,
5 to redeem from captivity those under law, in order that we might receive our sonship.
auf daß er die, so unter dem Gesetz waren, erlöste, daß wir die Kindschaft empfingen.
6 And because you are sons, God sent forth the spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, "Dear, dear Father!"
Weil ihr denn Kinder seid, hat Gott gesandt den Geist seines Sohnes in eure Herzen, der schreit: Abba, lieber Vater!
7 So each one of you is no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir, too, through God’s grace.
Also ist nun hier kein Knecht mehr, sondern eitel Kinder; sind's aber Kinder, so sind's auch Erben Gottes durch Christum.
8 But once, when you Gentiles had no knowledge of God, you were slaves to gods which have no real being.
Aber zu der Zeit, da ihr Gott nicht erkanntet, dientet ihr denen, die von Natur nicht Götter sind.
9 Now, however, when you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how is it that you are beginning to turn back to those weak and beggarly externalities, eager to be in bondage to them again?
Nun ihr aber Gott erkannt habt, ja vielmehr von Gott erkannt seid, wie wendet ihr euch denn wiederum zu den schwachen und dürftigen Satzungen, welchen ihr von neuem an dienen wollt?
10 You are scrupulous, are you, in observing "days" and "months" and "seasons" and "years"?
Ihr haltet Tage und Monate und Feste und Jahre.
11 I am alarmed about you for fear lest I may have bestowed labor on you to no purpose.
Ich fürchte für euch, daß ich vielleicht umsonst an euch gearbeitet habe.
12 Brothers, I beseech you, become as I am, because I also have become as you are. You never did me any wrong;
Seid doch wie ich; denn ich bin wie ihr. Liebe Brüder, ich bitte euch. Ihr habt mir kein Leid getan.
13 on the contrary, you know that although it was illness which brought about my preaching the gospel to you at my first visit,
Denn ihr wisset, daß ich euch in Schwachheit nach dem Fleisch das Evangelium gepredigt habe zum erstenmal.
14 and although my bodily affliction was a trial to you, you did not scoff at it nor spurn me, but welcomed me like an angel of God, like Christ Jesus himself.
Und meine Anfechtungen, die ich leide nach dem Fleisch, habt ihr nicht verachtet noch verschmäht; sondern wie ein Engel Gottes nahmet ihr mich auf, ja wie Christum Jesum.
15 Why then did you account yourselves so happy? (For I bear you witness that if you could you would have torn out your own eyes and given them to me.)
Wie wart ihr dazumal so selig! ich bin euer Zeuge, daß, wenn es möglich gewesen wäre, ihr hättet eure Augen ausgerissen und mir gegeben.
16 Am I then become your enemy, because I am telling you the truth?
Bin ich denn damit euer Feind geworden, daß ich euch die Wahrheit vorhalte?
17 These men are courting your favor to no good purpose. They want to isolate you, so that you will be courting their favor.
Sie eifern um euch nicht fein; sondern sie wollen euch von mir abfällig machen, daß ihr um sie eifern sollt.
18 It is always an honorable thing to have your favor sought in an honorable cause, always, and not only when I am with you.
Eifern ist gut, wenn's immerdar geschieht um das Gute, und nicht allein, wenn ich gegenwärtig bei euch bin.
19 O my little children, of whom I travail again in birth until Christ be formed within you!
Meine lieben Kinder, welche ich abermals mit Ängsten gebäre, bis daß Christus in euch eine Gestalt gewinne,
20 How I wish I could be with you now, that I might change my tone; for I am perplexed about you.
ich wollte, daß ich jetzt bei euch wäre und meine Stimme wandeln könnte; denn ich bin irre an euch.
21 Tell me, you who wish to be subject to the Law, why do you not listen to the Law?
Saget mir, die ihr unter dem Gesetz sein wollt: Habt ihr das Gesetz nicht gehört?
22 For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the slave woman and one by the free woman;
Denn es steht geschrieben, daß Abraham zwei Söhne hatte: einen von der Magd, den andern von der Freien.
23 but while the son by the slave woman was born according to the flesh, the son by the free woman was born in fulfilment of a promise.
Aber der von der Magd war, ist nach dem Fleisch geboren; der aber von der Freien ist durch die Verheißung geboren.
24 Now all this is an allegory, for these women are the two covenants; one from Mount Sinai, which is Hagar bearing children into bondage
Die Worte bedeuten etwas. Denn das sind zwei Testamente: eins von dem Berge Sinai, daß zur Knechtschaft gebiert, welches ist die Hagar;
25 (for the word Hagar stands for Mt. Sinai in Arabia and represents the present Jerusalem who with her children is in bondage.)
denn Hagar heißt in Arabien der Berg Sinai und kommt überein mit Jerusalem, das zu dieser Zeit ist und dienstbar ist mit seinen Kindern.
26 But the Jerusalem that is above is free, and she is our mother.
Aber das Jerusalem, das droben ist, das ist die Freie; die ist unser aller Mutter.
27 For it is written, Rejoice, O thou barren one who dost never bear, Break forth in joy, thou that dost not travail; For the children of the desolate woman are many. Yea, more than hers who has a husband.
Denn es steht geschrieben: “Sei fröhlich, du Unfruchtbare, die du nicht gebierst! Und brich hervor und rufe, die du nicht schwanger bist! Denn die Einsame hat viel mehr Kinder, denn die den Mann hat.”
28 But you, brothers, are like Isaac, children of the promise;
Wir aber, liebe Brüder, sind, Isaak nach, der Verheißung Kinder.
29 but just as in old times the son born by the flesh used to persecute the son born by the power of the Spirit, so also it is now.
Aber gleichwie zu der Zeit, der nach dem Fleisch geboren war, verfolgte den, der nach dem Geist geboren war, also geht es auch jetzt.
30 But what does the Scripture say? Send away the slave-woman and her son; for the slave’s son shall not be heir along with the son of the free woman.
Aber was spricht die Schrift? “Stoß die Magd hinaus mit ihrem Sohn; denn der Magd Sohn soll nicht erben mit dem Sohn der Freien.”
31 So, brothers, we are the children of no slave woman, but of free woman. For freedom did not Christ set us free;
So sind wir nun, liebe Brüder, nicht der Magd Kinder, sondern der Freien.
