< 1 Timothy 1 >

1 Paul, and apostle of Jesus Christ by command of God our Saviour and Jesus Christ our Hope,
Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the appointment of God our Savior, and the Lord Jesus Christ our hope,
2 to Timothy, my true son in the faith; Grace, mercy and peace from God, our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.
to Timothy, my true son in the faith; grace, mercy, peace from God our Father, and Christ Jesus our Lord.
3 As I begged you when I was setting out for Macedonia, stay where you are at Ephesus, and instruct certain individuals there not to be teaching heterodoxy,
As, on going into Macedonia, I besought you to remain in Ephesus, that you might charge some that they teach no other thing,
4 nor to be paying attention to myths and interminable genealogies, which tend to promote discussions rather than a stewardship entrusted by God, a stewardship which is in faith.
nor give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which produce disputes rather than godly edification, which is in faith;
5 Now the end of the exhortation is love, out of a pure heart and a good conscience and an undissembled faith.
(Now the end of the commandment is love out of a pure heart, and out of a good conscience, and out of faith unfeigned:
6 Some have failed here, and have turned aside to empty argument.
which things some not having aimed at, have turned aside to idle disputation,
7 Although they desire to be teachers of the law, they understand neither the words they use nor the subjects they talk about.
desiring to be teachers of law, though understanding neither what they say nor of what they boldly affirm.
8 I know well that "the Law is good" if a man use it lawfully;
But we know that the law is good, if any one use it lawfully;
9 but he must remember that the Law is not enacted for a good man, but for the lawless and rebellious, for the irreligious and sinful, for the godless and profane, for parricides and murderers,
knowing this, that law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for the unholy and for scorners, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for man-slayers,
10 for the immoral, for sexual perverts, for slave dealers, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound teaching,
for lewd persons, for sodomites, for men-stealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and for whatever other thing is opposed to sound teaching,
11 as laid down in the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which has been entrusted to me.
according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which has been intrusted to me.
12 And I am thankful to Christ Jesus our Lord, who has thus enabled me, that he accounted me faithful, and appointed me to his service,
And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me power, because he counted me faithful, and put me into the ministry;
13 although I had formerly been a blasphemer and a persecutor and a doer of outrage. But I obtained mercy because I acted ignorantly in unbelief.
me, I say, who before was a reviler and a persecutor and an overbearing man. But I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief:
14 And the grace of our Lord overflowed with faith and love that is in Christ Jesus.
and the grace of our Lord was very abundant with faith, and love which is in Christ Jesus.
15 Faithful is the saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that "Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners"! And there is no greater sinner than I!
Assuredly true and worthy of all acceptation is this saying: that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief.
16 Yet for this very cause I obtained mercy, so that in me, the chief of sinners, Jesus Christ might display all his boundless patience as an illustration for those who should later believe in him, and so gain life eternal. (aiōnios g166)
But for this reason I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might show all long-suffering, for an example to those who might afterward believe on him in order to life eternal. (aiōnios g166)
17 Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be glory and honor forever and ever. Amen! (aiōn g165)
Now to the King of the ages, the incorruptible, invisible, only wise God, be honor and glory from age to age. Amen.) (aiōn g165)
18 This charge then, I am laying upon you, Timothy, my son, according to the predictions formerly made concerning you. Fight the good fight in the spirit of these predictions,
This charge I commit to you, son Timothy, in accordance with the preceding prophecies concerning you, that by them you may war the good warfare,
19 keeping fast hold of faith and a good conscience; which certain individuals have cast aside, and so made shipwreck of their faith.
holding faith and a good conscience, which some having thrust from them, as it respects faith have made shipwreck; of whom are Hymenæus and Alexander,
20 Among them are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have given over to Satan, so that they may be taught not to blaspheme.
whom I have delivered to Satan, that they may learn not to revile.
