< Matthew 2 >

1 After the birth of Jesus, at Bethlehem of Judea, in the reign of King Herod, certain eastern magians came to Jerusalem, and inquired,
Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men [magi] from the East came into Jerusalem,
2 Where is the new-born King of the Jews; for we have seen his star in the east country, and are coming to do him homage?
saying: “Where is he who has been born King of the Jews? For we saw his star in the East and have come to worship him.”
3 King Herod hearing this, was alarmed, and all Jerusalem with him.
When Herod the king heard it he became agitated, and all Jerusalem with him.
4 And having assembled all the chief priests and the scribes of the people, he demanded of them where the Messiah should be born.
And gathering all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born.
5 They answered, at Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it is written by the Prophet,
So they said to him: “In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it stands written by the prophet:
6 "And thou Bethlehem, in the canton of Judah, are not the least illustrious among the cities of Judah; for out of thee shall come a ruler, who will govern my people Israel."
‘And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah, are not at all the least among the rulers of Judah, for out of you will come a Ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’”
7 Then Herod having secretly called the magians, procured from them exact information concerning the time of the star's appearing.
Then Herod, calling the wise men secretly, determined from them the time when the star appeared.
8 And sending them to Bethlehem, he said, Go, make an exact inquiry about the child; and when you have found him bring me word, that I may go also, and pay him homage.
And directing them to Bethlehem he said, “When you get there, search carefully for the young child; and should you find him, bring back word to me, so that I also may go and worship him.”
9 Having heard the King, they departed; and lo! the star which had appeared to them in the east country, moved before them, till it came, and stood over the place, where the child was.
So having heard the king they departed, and there was the star that they had seen in the East! It went before them until it arrived and stopped above where the young Child was.
10 When they again saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly.
Now when they saw the star they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy!
11 And being come into the house, they found the child with Mary his mother; and, prostrating themselves, did him homage. Then opening their caskets, they offered, as presents to him, gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
And coming into the house they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and falling down they worshiped Him; and opening their treasures they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense and myrrh.
12 And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they went home another way.
Then, having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed for their own country by a different road.
13 When they were gone, lo! a messenger of the Lord appearing to Joseph in a dream, said, Arise, take the child with his mother, and flee into Egypt; and remain there till I order you; for Herod will seek the child to destroy him.
Now when they had departed, again, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream saying: “Get up, take the young Child and His mother, flee to Egypt and stay there until I tell you; because Herod is about to seek the young Child to destroy Him!”
14 Accordingly he arose, took the child with his mother, and withdrew by night into Egypt,
So he got up and took the young Child and His mother by night and departed for Egypt.
15 where he continued until the death of Herod; so that, what the Lord had spoken by the Prophet, was verified, "Out of Egypt I called my Son."
And he was there until the death of Herod, so that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet should be fulfilled, namely: “Out of Egypt I called my Son.”
16 Then Herod, finding that he had been deceived by the magians, was highly incensed and dispatched emissaries who slew, by his order, all the male children in Bethlehem, and in all its territory, from those entering the second year, down to the time of which he had procured exact information from the magians.
Then Herod, when he saw that he had been deceived by the wise men, became very angry, and he sent out and killed all the boys who were in Bethlehem and in all its districts, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had determined from the wise men.
17 Then was the word of Jeremiah the Prophet verified,
Then what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled, namely:
18 "A cry was heard in Ramah, lamentation, and weeping, and bitter complaint: Rachel bewailing her children, and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more."
“A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, weeping and great mourning; Rachel weeping for her children and not wanting to be comforted, because they are no more.”
19 When Herod was dead, an angel of the Lord appearing in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, said,
Now Herod having died, there, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt
20 Arise, take the child with his mother, and go into the land of Israel; for they are dead who sought his life.
saying: “Get up, take the young Child and His mother and go into the land of Israel, for those seeking the life of the young Child have died.”
21 Accordingly, he arose, took the child with his mother, and came to the land of Israel;
So he got up and took the young Child and His mother and went into the land of Israel.
22 but hearing that Archelaus had succeeded his father Herod in the throne of Judea, he was afraid to return thither; and being warned in a dream, retired into the district of Galilee,
But hearing that Archelaus was reigning over Judea instead of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. And being warned in a dream he proceeded into the region of Galilee.
23 and resided in a city named Nazareth; in this verifying the declarations of the Prophet concerning Jesus, that he should be called a Nazarene.
And upon arriving he settled in a city called Natsareth [Branch-town], so that what was spoken through the prophets should be fulfilled, that He would be called a Natsorean [Branch-man].
