< Mark 12 >

1 Then addressing them in parables, he said, A man planted a vineyard, and hedged it about, and dug a place for a wine vat, and built a tower, and having farmed it out, went abroad.
And He began to speak to them in allegories: “A man planted a vineyard, and put a hedge around, and dug a wine vat, and built a tower, and gave it out to farmers, and went abroad;
2 The season being come, he sent a servant to the husbandmen, to receive his portion of the fruits of the vineyard.
and he sent to the farmers at the due time a servant, that from the farmers he may receive from the fruit of the vineyard,
3 But they seized him, beat him, and sent him away empty.
and they, having taken him, severely beat [him], and sent him away empty.
4 Again, he sent to them another servant, whom they wounded in the head with stones, and sent back with disgrace.
And again he sent to them another servant, and having cast stones at that one, they wounded [him] in the head, and sent [him] away—dishonored.
5 He sent another, whom they killed; and of many more that he sent, some they beat, and some they killed.
And again he sent another, and that one they killed; and many others, some beating, and some killing.
6 At last, having an only son, whom he loved, he sent him also to them; for he said, They will reverence my son.
Having yet therefore one son—his beloved—he also sent him to them last, saying, They will respect my son;
7 But those husbandmen said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be our own.
and those farmers said among themselves, This is the heir, come, we may kill him, and the inheritance will be ours;
8 Then they laid hold on him, and having thrust him out of the vineyard, they killed him.
and having taken him, they killed, and cast [him] forth outside the vineyard.
9 What, therefore, will the proprietor of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the husbandmen, and give the vineyard to others.
What therefore will the lord of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the farmers, and will give the vineyard to others.
10 Have you not read this passage of scripture, "A stone which the builders rejected, is made the head of the corner:
And this Writing you did not read: A stone that the builders rejected, it became the head of a corner;
11 this the Lord has performed, and we behold it with admiration?"
this was from the LORD, and it is wonderful in our eyes.”
12 And they desired to have seized him, but were afraid of the multitude; for they knew that he spoke the parable against them.
And they were seeking to lay hold on Him, and they feared the multitude, for they knew that He spoke the allegory against them, and having left Him, they went away;
13 Then the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders, leaving Jesus, went away, and sent to him certain Pharisees and Herodians, to catch him in his words.
and they send to Him certain of the Pharisees and of the Herodians, that they may ensnare Him in discourse,
14 These coming up, said to him, Rabbi, we know that you are upright, and stand in awe of none; for you respect not the person of men, but teach the way of God faithfully. Is it lawful to give tribute to Cesar, or not?
and they having come, say to Him, “Teacher, we have known that You are true, and You are not caring for anyone, for You do not look to the face of men, but in truth teach the way of God; is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar or not? May we give, or may we not give?”
15 Shall we give, or shall we not give? He, perceiving their artifice, answered, Why would you entangle me? Bring me a denarius, that I may see it.
And He, knowing their hypocrisy, said to them, “Why do you tempt Me? Bring Me a denarius, that I may see”;
16 When they had brought, he asked them, Whose is the image and inscription? They answered, Cesar's.
and they brought, and He says to them, “Whose [is] this image, and the inscription?” And they said to Him, “Caesar’s”;
17 Jesus replied, Render to Cesar that which is Cesar's, and to God that which is God's. And they wondered at him.
and Jesus answering said to them, “Give back the things of Caesar to Caesar, and the things of God to God”; and they wondered at Him.
18 Then Sadducees came to him, who say that there is no future life, and proposed this questions:
And the Sadducees come to Him, who say there is not a resurrection, and they questioned Him, saying,
19 Rabbi, Moses has enacted, that if a man's brother die, survived by a wife without children, he shall marry the widow, and raise issue to his brother.
“Teacher, Moses wrote to us that if anyone’s brother may die, and may leave a wife, and may leave no children, that his brother may take his wife, and raise up seed to his brother.
20 Now there were seven brothers. The first took a wife, and dying, left no issue.
There were then seven brothers, and the first took a wife, and dying, he left no seed;
21 The second married her, and died; neither did he leave any issue; so did also the third.
and the second took her, and died, not having left seed, and the third in like manner,
22 Thus all seven married her, and left no issue. Last of all, the woman also died.
and the seven took her, and left no seed, last of all the woman also died;
23 At the resurrection, therefore, when they are risen, to which of the seven will she belong; for she has been the wife of them all?
in the resurrection, then, whenever they may rise, of which of them will she be wife—for the seven had her as wife?”
24 Jesus answering, said to them, Is not this the source of your error, your not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God?
And Jesus answering said to them, “Do you not go astray because of this, not knowing the Writings, nor the power of God?
25 For there will be neither marrying, nor giving in marriage, among them who rise from the dead. They will then resemble the angels.
For when they may rise out of the dead, they neither marry nor are they given in marriage, but are as messengers who are in the heavens.
26 But as to the dead, that they are raised, have you not read in the book of Moses, how God spoke to him in the bush, saying, "I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob."
And concerning the dead, that they rise: have you not read in the Scroll of Moses (at the bush), how God spoke to him, saying, I [am] the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob;
27 God is not a God of the dead, but of the living. Therefore you greatly err.
He is not the God of dead men, but a God of living men; you then go greatly astray.”
28 A scribe, who had heard them dispute, perceiving the justness of his reply, came to him, and proposed this question: Which is the chief commandment of all?
And one of the scribes having come near, having heard them disputing, knowing that He answered them well, questioned Him, “Which is the first command of all?”
29 Jesus answered, The chief of all the commandments is, "Hearken, Israel, the Lord is our God. The Lord is one:"
And Jesus answered him, “The first of all the commands—Hear, O Israel: The LORD is our God, the LORD is one;
30 and, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength." This is the first commandment.
and you will love the LORD your God out of all your heart, and out of all your soul, and out of all your understanding, and out of all your strength—this [is] the first command;
31 The second resembles it: "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." There is no commandment greater than these.
and the second [is] like [it], this, You will love your neighbor as yourself—there is no other command greater than these.”
32 The scribe replied, Truly, Rabbi, you have answered well. There is one, and only one;
And the scribe said to Him, “Well, Teacher, in truth You have spoken that there is one God, and there is none other but He;
33 and to love him with all the heart, and with all the spirit, and with all the soul, and with all the strength; and to love one's self, is more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.
and to love Him out of all the heart, and out of all the understanding, and out of all the soul, and out of all the strength, and to love one’s neighbor as one’s self, is more than all the whole burnt-offerings and the sacrifices.”
34 Jesus observing how pertinently he had answered, said to him, You are not far from the kingdom of God. After that, no person ventured to put questions to him.
And Jesus, having seen him that he answered with understanding, said to him, “You are not far from the Kingdom of God”; and no one dared question Him anymore.
35 As Jesus was teaching in the temple, he asked them, Why do you scribes assert, that the Messiah must be a son of David?
And Jesus answering said, teaching in the temple, “How do the scribes say that the Christ is son of David?
36 Yet David, himself, speaking by the Holy Spirit, says, "The Lord, said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand, until I make your foes your footstool."
For David himself said in the Holy Spirit, The LORD said to my Lord, Sit on My right hand, Until I place Your enemies—Your footstool;
37 David himself, therefore, calls him his Lord; how then can he be his son? And the common people heard him with delight.
therefore David himself calls Him Lord, and from where is He his son?” And the great multitude were hearing Him gladly,
38 Further, in teaching, he said to them, Beware of the scribes, who affect to walk in robes; who love salutations in public places,
and He was saying to them in His teaching, “Beware of the scribes who will to walk in long robes, and love salutations in the marketplaces,
39 and the principal seats in the synagogues, and the uppermost places at entertainments;
and first seats in the synagogues, and first couches at the banquets,
40 who devour the families of widows, and use long prayers for a disguise. They shall undergo the severest punishment.
who are devouring the widows’ houses, and for a pretense are making long prayers; these will receive more abundant judgment.”
41 And Jesus sitting opposite the treasury, observed the people throwing money into the treasury; and many rich persons put in much.
And Jesus having sat down opposite the treasury, was beholding how the multitude puts brass into the treasury, and many rich were putting in much,
42 Then the poor widow came, who threw in two mites, (which make a farthing.)
and having come, a poor widow put in two mites, which are a penny.
43 Jesus having called his disciples, said to them, Indeed, I say to you, that this poor widow has given more than any of those who have thrown into the treasury;
And having called near His disciples, He says to them, “Truly I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all those putting into the treasury;
44 for they all have contributed out of their superfluous stores; whereas she has given all the little she had--her whole living.
for all, out of their abundance, put in, but she, out of her want, put in all that she had—all her living.”
