< John 20 >

1 The first day of the week, Mary, the Magdalene, went early to the sepulcher, while it was yet dark; and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance.
anantaraṁ saptāhasya prathamadine 'tipratyūṣe 'ndhakāre tiṣṭhati magdalīnī mariyam tasya śmaśānasya nikaṭaṁ gatvā śmaśānasya mukhāt prastaramapasāritam apaśyat|
2 Then she came running to Simon Peter, and to that other disciple whom Jesus loved, and said to them, They have taken the Master out of the sepulcher; and we know not where they have laid him.
paścād dhāvitvā śimonpitarāya yīśoḥ priyatamaśiṣyāya cedam akathayat, lokāḥ śmaśānāt prabhuṁ nītvā kutrāsthāpayan tad vaktuṁ na śaknomi|
3 Immediately Peter went out, and the other disciple, to go to the sepulcher;
ataḥ pitaraḥ sonyaśiṣyaśca barhi rbhutvā śmaśānasthānaṁ gantum ārabhetāṁ|
4 and both ran together, but the other disciple outran Peter, and came first to the sepulcher;
ubhayordhāvatoḥ sonyaśiṣyaḥ pitaraṁ paścāt tyaktvā pūrvvaṁ śmaśānasthāna upasthitavān|
5 and stooping down, he saw the linen rollers lying, but went not in.
tadā prahvībhūya sthāpitavastrāṇi dṛṣṭavān kintu na prāviśat|
6 Then came Simon Peter, who followed him, and went into the sepulcher, where he observed the rollers lying;
aparaṁ śimonpitara āgatya śmaśānasthānaṁ praviśya
7 and the handkerchief which had been wrapped about his head, not laid beside them, but folded up in a place by itself.
sthāpitavastrāṇi mastakasya vastrañca pṛthak sthānāntare sthāpitaṁ dṛṣṭavān|
8 Then the other disciple, who came first to the sepulcher, entered also; and he saw, and believed the report.
tataḥ śmaśānasthānaṁ pūrvvam āgato yonyaśiṣyaḥ sopi praviśya tādṛśaṁ dṛṣṭā vyaśvasīt|
9 For, as yet, they did not understand from the scriptures, that he was to rise from the dead.
yataḥ śmaśānāt sa utthāpayitavya etasya dharmmapustakavacanasya bhāvaṁ te tadā voddhuṁ nāśankuvan|
10 Then the disciples returned to their companions.
anantaraṁ tau dvau śiṣyau svaṁ svaṁ gṛhaṁ parāvṛtyāgacchatām|
11 But Mary stood without, near the sepulcher, weeping. As she wept, stooping down to look into the sepulcher,
tataḥ paraṁ mariyam śmaśānadvārasya bahiḥ sthitvā roditum ārabhata tato rudatī prahvībhūya śmaśānaṁ vilokya
12 she saw two angles in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head, the other at the feet.
yīśoḥ śayanasthānasya śiraḥsthāne padatale ca dvayo rdiśo dvau svargīyadūtāvupaviṣṭau samapaśyat|
13 And they said to her, Woman, why do you weep? She answered, Because they have taken away my Master, and I know not where they have laid him.
tau pṛṣṭavantau he nāri kuto rodiṣi? sāvadat lokā mama prabhuṁ nītvā kutrāsthāpayan iti na jānāmi|
14 Having said this, she turned about, and saw Jesus standing, but knew not that it was Jesus.
ityuktvā mukhaṁ parāvṛtya yīśuṁ daṇḍāyamānam apaśyat kintu sa yīśuriti sā jñātuṁ nāśaknot|
15 Jesus aid to her, Woman, why do you weep? Whom do you seek? She, supposing him to be the gardener, answered, Sir, if you have conveyed him hence, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.
tadā yīśustām apṛcchat he nāri kuto rodiṣi? kaṁ vā mṛgayase? tataḥ sā tam udyānasevakaṁ jñātvā vyāharat, he maheccha tvaṁ yadītaḥ sthānāt taṁ nītavān tarhi kutrāsthāpayastad vada tatsthānāt tam ānayāmi|
16 Jesus said to her, Mary. She, turning, said to him, Rabboni; that is, Teacher.
tadā yīśustām avadat he mariyam| tataḥ sā parāvṛtya pratyavadat he rabbūnī arthāt he guro|
17 Jesus said to her, Touch me not, for I have not yet ascended to my Father; but go to my brethren, and say to them, I ascend to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.
tadā yīśuravadat māṁ mā dhara, idānīṁ pituḥ samīpe ūrddhvagamanaṁ na karomi kintu yo mama yuṣmākañca pitā mama yuṣmākañceśvarastasya nikaṭa ūrddhvagamanaṁ karttum udyatosmi, imāṁ kathāṁ tvaṁ gatvā mama bhrātṛgaṇaṁ jñāpaya|
18 Mary, the Magdalene, went and informed the disciples, that she had seen the Master, and that he had spoken these things to her.
tato magdalīnīmariyam tatkṣaṇād gatvā prabhustasyai darśanaṁ dattvā kathā etā akathayad iti vārttāṁ śiṣyebhyo'kathayat|
19 In the evening of that day, the first of the week, Jesus came where the disciples were convened, (the doors having been shut, for the fear of the Jews, ) and stood in the midst, and said to them, Peace be to you.
tataḥ paraṁ saptāhasya prathamadinasya sandhyāsamaye śiṣyā ekatra militvā yihūdīyebhyo bhiyā dvāraruddham akurvvan, etasmin kāle yīśusteṣāṁ madhyasthāne tiṣṭhan akathayad yuṣmākaṁ kalyāṇaṁ bhūyāt|
20 Having said this, he showed them his hand and his side. The disciples, therefore, rejoiced when they saw it was their Master.
ityuktvā nijahastaṁ kukṣiñca darśitavān, tataḥ śiṣyāḥ prabhuṁ dṛṣṭvā hṛṣṭā abhavan|
21 Jesus said again to them, Peace be to you. As the Father has sent me, so do I send you.
yīśuḥ punaravadad yuṣmākaṁ kalyāṇaṁ bhūyāt pitā yathā māṁ praiṣayat tathāhamapi yuṣmān preṣayāmi|
22 After these words, he breathed on them, and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit.
ityuktvā sa teṣāmupari dīrghapraśvāsaṁ dattvā kathitavān pavitram ātmānaṁ gṛhlīta|
23 Whose sins soever you remit, are remitted to them; and whose sins soever you retain, are retained.
yūyaṁ yeṣāṁ pāpāni mocayiṣyatha te mocayiṣyante yeṣāñca pāpāti na mocayiṣyatha te na mocayiṣyante|
24 Now, Thomas, that is, Didymus, one of the twelve, was not with them, when Jesus came.
dvādaśamadhye gaṇito yamajo thomānāmā śiṣyo yīśorāgamanakālai taiḥ sārddhaṁ nāsīt|
25 The other disciples, therefore, said to him, We have seen the Master. But he answered, Unless I see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger to the print of the nails, and my hand to his side, I will not believe.
ato vayaṁ prabhūm apaśyāmeti vākye'nyaśiṣyairukte sovadat, tasya hastayo rlauhakīlakānāṁ cihnaṁ na vilokya taccihnam aṅgulyā na spṛṣṭvā tasya kukṣau hastaṁ nāropya cāhaṁ na viśvasiṣyāmi|
26 Eight days after, the disciples being again in the house, and Thomas with them, Jesus came, the doors having been shut, and stood in the midst and said, Peace be to you.
aparam aṣṭame'hni gate sati thomāsahitaḥ śiṣyagaṇa ekatra militvā dvāraṁ ruddhvābhyantara āsīt, etarhi yīśusteṣāṁ madhyasthāne tiṣṭhan akathayat, yuṣmākaṁ kuśalaṁ bhūyāt|
27 Then turning to Thomas, Reach hither your finger, he said, and look at my hands; reach also your hand, and feel my side; and be not incredulous, but believe.
paścāt thāmai kathitavān tvam aṅgulīm atrārpayitvā mama karau paśya karaṁ prasāryya mama kukṣāvarpaya nāviśvasya|
28 Thomas answered, My Lord, and my God!
tadā thomā avadat, he mama prabho he madīśvara|
29 Jesus replied, Because you see me, you believe; happy they, who, having never seen, shall nevertheless believe.
yīśurakathayat, he thomā māṁ nirīkṣya viśvasiṣi ye na dṛṣṭvā viśvasanti taeva dhanyāḥ|
30 Many other miracles Jesus likewise performed in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book.
etadanyāni pustake'smin alikhitāni bahūnyāścaryyakarmmāṇi yīśuḥ śiṣyāṇāṁ purastād akarot|
31 But these are recorded, that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God; and, that believing, you may have life through his name.
