Romans 2
1 Therefore, you are inexcusable, O man—everyone who is judging—for in that in which you judge the other, yourself you condemn, for the same things you practice who are judging,
Donc, tu es sans excuse, ô homme, qui que tu sois, de juger autrui; car, en le jugeant, tu te condamnes toi-même, et, en effet, tout en le jugeant, tu te conduis comme lui;
2 and we have known that the judgment of God is according to truth, on those practicing such things.
et la sentence de Dieu sur ceux qui se conduisent ainsi est, nous le savons, conforme à la vérité.
3 And do you think this, O man, who are judging those who such things are practicing, and are doing them, that you will escape the judgment of God?
Penses-tu, toi qui juges ceux qui se conduisent ainsi et qui en fais autant, penses-tu échapper à la sentence de Dieu?
4 Or the riches of His goodness, and forbearance, and long-suffering, do you despise, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to conversion?
Et son inépuisable bonté, et sa tolérance, et sa patience les méprises-tu? Ignores-tu que la bonté de Dieu t'invite au repentir?
5 But according to your hardness and impenitent heart, you treasure up wrath to yourself in [the] day of wrath and of the revelation of the righteous judgment of God,
Par ton endurcissement et par l'impénitence de ton coeur, tu t'amasses un trésor de colère pour le jour terrible où se révélera le juste jugement de Dieu
6 who will render to each according to his works;
«Qui rendra à chacun selon ses oeuvres»
7 to those, indeed, who in continuance of a good work, seek glory, and honor, and incorruptibility—continuous life; (aiōnios g166)
Aux uns qui, en persévérant dans l'oeuvre bonne, cherchent la gloire, l'honneur et l'immortalité: la vie éternelle! (aiōnios g166)
8 and to those contentious, and disobedient, indeed, to the truth, and obeying the unrighteousness—indignation and wrath,
Aux autres qui, par esprit de parti, s'opposent à la vérité et se laissent aller à l'iniquité: la colère et l'indignation!
9 tribulation and distress, on every soul of man that is working the evil, both of Jew first, and of Greek;
Malheur, désespoir sur toute âme d'homme qui fait le mal, sur celle du Juif d'abord, sur celle du païen ensuite!
10 and glory, and honor, and peace, to everyone who is working the good, both to Jew first, and to Greek.
Gloire, honneur et paix à quiconque fait le bien, au Juif d'abord, au païen ensuite!
11 For there is no favor by appearance with God,
Car Dieu n'a pas égard aux personnes;
12 for as many as sinned without law, will also perish without law, and as many as sinned in law, through law will be judged,
tous ceux qui auront péché sans avoir eu de Loi, périront sans avoir eu de Loi, et ceux qui auront péché en ayant eu une Loi, seront jugés par cette Loi.
13 for not the hearers of the Law [are] righteous before God, but the doers of the Law will be declared righteous.
En effet, ce ne sont pas ceux qui entendent lire une Loi qui sont justes aux yeux de Dieu; mais ceux qui la pratiquent seront déclarés justes.
14 For when nations that have no law, by nature may do the things of the Law, these not having a law—to themselves are a law,
Et quand les païens qui n'ont pas de Loi font naturellement ce que la Loi commande, tout en n'ayant pas de Loi, ils sont eux-mêmes leur propre Loi;
15 who show the work of the Law written in their hearts, their conscience also witnessing with them, and between one another the thoughts accusing or else defending,
ils montrent que l'oeuvre commandée par la Loi est écrite dans leur coeur, c'est leur conscience qui l'atteste et ce sont leurs pensées qui tantôt les accusent, tantôt même les absolvent.
16 in the day when God will judge the secrets of men, according to my good news, through Jesus Christ.
On le verra le jour où Dieu, selon l'Évangile que je prêche, jugera par Jésus-Christ les actions secrètes des hommes.
17 Behold, you are named a Jew, and rest on the Law, and boast in God,
Toi tu te nommes un Juif, tu te reposes sur la Loi, tu es fier de ton Dieu,
18 and know the will, and approve the distinctions, being instructed out of the Law,
tu connais sa volonté, instruit par la Loi tu sais, peser le pour et le contre,
19 and have confidence that you yourself are a leader of blind ones, a light of those in darkness,
tu te sens capable d'être un guide pour les aveugles, une lumière pour ceux qui sont dans les ténèbres,
20 a corrector of foolish ones, a teacher of babies, having the form of the knowledge and of the truth in the Law.
un directeur pour les ignorants, un maître pour ceux qui sont encore enfants, car tu as dans la Loi l'expression de la sagesse et de la vérité;
21 You, then, who are teaching another, do you not teach yourself?
et quand tu instruis ainsi les autres tu ne t'instruis pas toi-même! tu prêches de ne pas voler, et tu voles!
22 You who are preaching not to steal, do you steal? You who are saying not to commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who are abhorring the idols, do you rob temples?
tu dis de ne pas commettre d'adultères, et tu en commets! tu as les idoles en abomination, et tu commets des sacrilèges!
23 You who boast in the Law, through the transgression of the Law do you dishonor God?
tu es fier d'avoir une Loi, et tu outrages Dieu en la violant!
24 For evil is spoken of the Name of God among the nations because of you, according as it has been written.
«Le nom de Dieu, comme dit l'Écriture, est déshonoré par les païens à cause de vous.»
25 For circumcision, indeed, profits, if you may practice law, but if you may be a transgressor of law, your circumcision has become uncircumcision.
La circoncision est utile, sans doute, tant que tu pratiques la Loi; si tu la violes, tu es comme si tu n'étais pas circoncis.
26 If, therefore, the uncircumcision may keep the righteousness of the Law, will not his uncircumcision be reckoned for circumcision?
Si l'incirconcis observe les ordonnances de la Loi, tout incirconcis qu'il est, ne sera-t-il pas considéré comme circoncis?
27 And the uncircumcision, by nature, fulfilling the Law, will judge you who, through letter and circumcision, [are] a transgressor of law.
Et l'incirconcis de naissance qui observe la Loi ne te jugera-t-il pas, toi, qui la violes, possesseur de la lettre de la Loi et de la circoncision?
28 For he is not a Jew who is [so] outwardly, neither [is] circumcision that which is outward in flesh;
On n'est pas Juif par l'extérieur; la vraie circoncision n'est pas celle qui se voit sur le corps;
29 but a Jew [is] he who is [so] inwardly, and circumcision [is] of the heart, in spirit, not in letter, of which the praise is not of men, but of God.
mais le vrai Juif c'est celui qui l'est intérieurement, le vrai circoncis l'est dans son coeur, il ne l'est pas à la lettre, il l’est en esprit; voilà le Juif qui est approuvé sinon des hommes, du moins de Dieu!
