< Proverbs 12 >
1 Whoever is loving instruction, is loving knowledge, And whoever is hating reproof [is] brutish.
He that loveth correction, loveth knowledge, but, he that hateth reproof, is brutish.
2 The good brings forth favor from YHWH, And the man of wicked schemes He condemns.
A good man, obtaineth favour from Yahweh, but, a man of wicked devices, will he condemn.
3 A man is not established by wickedness, And the root of the righteous is not moved.
A son of earth, shall not be established, by lawlessness, but, the root of the righteous, shall not be disturbed.
4 A virtuous woman [is] a crown to her husband, And as rottenness in his bones [is] one causing shame.
A virtuous woman, is the crown of her husband, but, a veritable decay in his bones, is she that causeth shame.
5 The thoughts of the righteous [are] justice, The counsels of the wicked—deceit.
The plans of the righteous, are just, but, the counsels of the lawless, are deceitful.
6 The words of the wicked [are]: “Lay [in] wait for blood,” And the mouth of the upright delivers them.
The words of the lawless, are—of lying in wait for blood, but, the mouth of the upright, shall deliver them.
7 Overthrow the wicked, and they are not, And the house of the righteous stands.
Overthrown are the lawless and they are not, but, the house of the righteous, shall stand.
8 A man is praised according to his wisdom, And the perverted of heart becomes despised.
In proportion to his prudence, is a man, to be praised, but, the perverse in heart, shall be an object of contempt.
9 Better [is] the lightly esteemed who has a servant, Than the self-honored who lacks bread.
Better slighted, and have a servant, than to honour oneself, and come short of bread.
10 The righteous knows the life of his beast, And the mercies of the wicked [are] cruel.
A righteous man, regardeth the desire of his beast, but, the compassions of the lawless, are cruel.
11 Whoever is tilling the ground is satisfied [with] bread, And whoever is pursuing vanities is lacking heart,
He that tilleth his land, shall be filled with food, but, he that runneth after worthless men, lacketh sense.
12 The wicked has desired the net of evildoers, And the root of the righteous gives.
A lawless man craveth the prey of the wicked, but, the root of the righteous, is enduring.
13 The snare of the wicked [is] in transgression of the lips, And the righteous goes out from distress.
By the transgression of the lips, is the wicked man, ensnared, but the righteous, cometh out of distress.
14 One [is] satisfied [with] good from the fruit of the mouth, And the deed of man’s hands returns to him.
Of the fruit of a man’s mouth, shall he be satisfied with good, and, the dealing of the hands of a son of earth, shall be paid back to him.
15 The way of a fool [is] right in his own eyes, And whoever is listening to counsel [is] wise.
The way of the foolish, is right in his own eyes, but, he that hearkeneth to counsel, is wise.
16 The fool—his anger is known in a day, And the prudent is covering shame.
A foolish man, on the [same] day, letteth his vexation be known, but, he that concealeth an affront, is prudent.
17 Whoever utters faithfulness declares righteousness, And a false witness—deceit.
He that whispereth faithfulness, declareth righteousness, but, a false witness, is a fraud.
18 A rash speaker is like piercings of a sword, And the tongue of the wise is healing.
There is who babbleth, as with thrusts of a sword, but, the tongue of the wise, hath healing.
19 The lip of truth is established forever, And a tongue of falsehood for a moment.
A lip that is faithful, shall be firm to futurity, but, only for a twinkling, is the tongue that is false.
20 Deceit [is] in the heart of those devising evil, But for counselors of peace—joy.
Deceit, is in the heart of contrivers of mischief, but, to the counsellors of peace, shall be joy.
21 No iniquity is desired by the righteous, And the wicked have been full of evil.
Unseemly to the righteous, is any trouble, but, the lawless, are full of misfortune.
22 Lying lips [are] an abomination to YHWH, And steadfast doers [are] his delight.
An abomination to Yahweh, are lips that are false, but, he that dealeth faithfully, is his delight.
23 A prudent man is concealing knowledge, And the heart of fools proclaims folly.
A prudent man, concealeth knowledge, but, the heart of dullards, proclaimeth folly.
24 The hand of the diligent rules, And slothfulness becomes tributary.
The hand of the diligent, shall bear rule, but, the indolent, shall come under tribute.
25 Sorrow in the heart of a man bows down, And a good word makes him glad.
When anxiety is in the heart of a man, one may bow him down, but, a good word, maketh him glad.
26 The righteous searches his companion, And the way of the wicked causes them to err.
The righteous man guideth his neighbour, but, the way of the lawless, leadeth them astray.
27 The slothful does not roast his game, And the wealth of a diligent man is precious.
Indolence, roasteth not, his own game, but, the substance of a man, is precious, when he is diligent.
28 In the path of righteousness [is] life, And in the way of [that] path [is] no death!
In the way of righteousness, is life, and, in the path thereof, immortality,
