< Philippians 1 >

1 Paul and Timotheus, servants of Jesus Christ, to all the holy ones in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, with overseers and servants:
Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, to all those set apart in Christ Jesus who are at Philippi, with the overseers and deacons.
2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ!
May grace be to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
3 I give thanks to my God on all the remembrance of you,
I thank my God every time I remember you;
4 always, in every supplication of mine for you all, with joy making the supplication,
and always in every prayer for all of you, I pray with joy.
5 for your contribution to the good news from the first day until now,
I give thanks for your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now.
6 having been confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you, will complete [it] until [the] day of Jesus Christ,
I am confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will continue to complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.
7 according as it is righteous for me to think this in behalf of you all, because of my having you in the heart, both in my bonds, and [in] the defense and confirmation of the good news, all of you being fellow-partakers with me of grace.
It is right for me to feel this way about all of you because I have you in my heart. You all have been my partners in grace both in my imprisonment and in my defense and confirmation of the gospel.
8 For God is my witness, how I long for you all with [the] yearnings of Jesus Christ,
For God is my witness, how I long for all of you with the compassion of Christ Jesus.
9 and this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in full knowledge, and all discernment,
I am praying this: That your love may abound more and more in knowledge and all understanding.
10 for your proving the things that differ, that you may be pure and offenseless—to [the] Day of Christ,
I pray for this so that you may approve what is excellent, and so you may be sincere and without offense on the day of Christ.
11 being filled with the fruit of righteousness, that [is] through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.
I pray that you also will be filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.
12 And I intend you to know, brothers, that the things concerning me, rather have come to an advancement of the good news,
Now I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel.
13 so that my bonds have become evident in Christ in the whole Praetorium, and to all the other places,
As a result, my chains in Christ came to light throughout the whole palace guard and to everyone else.
14 and the greater part of the brothers in the LORD, having confidence by my bonds, are more abundantly bold to fearlessly speak the word.
Most of the brothers have far more confidence in the Lord because of my chains, and they have courage to fearlessly speak the word.
15 Certain, indeed, even through envy and contention, and certain also through goodwill, preach the Christ;
Some indeed even proclaim Christ out of envy and strife, and also others out of good will.
16 one, indeed, of rivalry proclaims the Christ, not purely, supposing to add affliction to my bonds,
The latter do it out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel.
17 and the other out of love, having known that I am set for defense of the good news:
But the former proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely. They think they will afflict me while I am in chains.
18 what then? In every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed—and I rejoice in this, indeed, and will rejoice.
What then? Only that in every way—whether from false motives or from true—Christ is proclaimed, and in this I rejoice. Yes, and I will rejoice,
19 For I have known that this will turn out to me for salvation, through your supplication, and the supply of the Spirit of Christ Jesus,
for I know that this will result in my deliverance through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ.
20 according to my earnest expectation and hope, that I will be ashamed in nothing, and in all freedom, as always, also Christ will now be magnified in my body, whether through life or through death,
It is my eager expectation and certain hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but that I will have complete boldness, so that now as always, Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death.
21 for to me to live [is] Christ, and to die [is] gain.
For to me to live is Christ and to die is gain.
22 And if to live in the flesh [is] to me a fruit of work, then what will I choose? I do not know;
But if I am to live in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me. Yet which to choose? I do not know.
23 for I am pressed by the two, having the desire to depart, and to be with Christ, for it is far better,
For I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, which is far better,
24 and to remain in the flesh is more necessary on your account,
yet to remain in the flesh is more necessary for your sake.
25 and being persuaded of this, I have known that I will remain and continue with you all, to your advancement and joy of the faith,
Being convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with you all, for your progress and joy in the faith,
26 that your boasting may abound in Christ Jesus in me through my coming again to you.
so that in me you may have increasing reasons to boast in Christ Jesus when I come to you again.
27 Only conduct yourselves worthily of the good news of the Christ, that, whether having come and seen you, whether being absent I may hear of the things concerning you, that you stand fast in one spirit, with one soul, striving together for the faith of the good news,
Only conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come to see you or am absent, I may hear about you, that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel.
28 and not be terrified in anything by those opposing, which is indeed a token of destruction to them, and to you of salvation, and that from God;
Do not be frightened in any respect by those who are your opponents. This is a sign to them of their destruction, but of your salvation—and this from God.
29 because to you it was granted, on behalf of Christ, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer on behalf of Him;
For it has been granted to you, for the sake of Christ, not only to believe in him, but also to suffer for his sake,
30 having the same conflict, such as you saw in me, and now hear of in me.
having the same conflict which you saw in me, and now you hear in me.
