Numbers 20
1 And the sons of Israel, all the congregation, come [into] the wilderness of Zin in the first month, and the people abide in Kadesh; and Miriam dies there and is buried there.
Et les fils d’Israël, toute l’assemblée, vinrent au désert de Tsin, le premier mois; et le peuple habita à Kadès; et Marie mourut là, et y fut enterrée.
2 And there has been no water for the congregation, and they are assembled against Moses and against Aaron,
Et il n’y avait pas d’eau pour l’assemblée; et ils s’attroupèrent contre Moïse et contre Aaron.
3 and the people strive with Moses and speak, saying, “And oh that we had expired when our brothers expired before YHWH!
Et le peuple contesta avec Moïse, et ils parlèrent, disant: Que n’avons-nous péri, quand nos frères périrent devant l’Éternel!
4 And why have you brought in the assembly of YHWH to this wilderness to die there, we and our beasts?
Et pourquoi avez-vous amené la congrégation de l’Éternel dans ce désert, pour y mourir, nous et nos bêtes?
5 And why have you brought us up out of Egypt to bring us to this evil place? [It is] not a place of seed, and fig, and vine, and pomegranate; and there is no water to drink.”
Et pourquoi nous avez-vous fait monter d’Égypte, pour nous amener dans ce mauvais lieu? Ce n’est pas un lieu où l’on puisse semer; [on n’y trouve] ni figuiers, ni vignes, ni grenadiers, et il n’y a pas d’eau pour boire.
6 And Moses and Aaron go in from the presence of the assembly to the opening of the Tent of Meeting and fall on their faces, and the glory of YHWH is seen by them.
Et Moïse et Aaron vinrent de devant la congrégation à l’entrée de la tente d’assignation, et tombèrent sur leurs faces; et la gloire de l’Éternel leur apparut.
7 And YHWH speaks to Moses, saying,
Et l’Éternel parla à Moïse, disant:
8 “Take the rod and assemble the congregation—you and your brother Aaron—and you have spoken to the rock before their eyes, and it has given its water, and you have brought out water to them from the rock, and have watered the congregation and their beasts.”
Prends la verge, et réunis l’assemblée, toi et Aaron, ton frère, et vous parlerez devant leurs yeux au rocher, et il donnera ses eaux; et tu leur feras sortir de l’eau du rocher, et tu donneras à boire à l’assemblée et à leurs bêtes.
9 And Moses takes the rod from before YHWH as He has commanded him,
Et Moïse prit la verge de devant l’Éternel, comme il lui avait commandé.
10 and Moses and Aaron assemble the assembly to the front of the rock, and he says to them, “Now hear, O rebels, do we bring out water to you from this rock?”
Et Moïse et Aaron réunirent la congrégation devant le rocher, et il leur dit: Écoutez, rebelles! Vous ferons-nous sortir de l’eau de ce rocher?
11 And Moses lifts up his hand and strikes the rock with his rod twice; and much water comes out, and the congregation drinks, and their beasts [drink].
Et Moïse leva sa main, et frappa le rocher de sa verge, deux fois; et il en sortit des eaux en abondance, et l’assemblée but, et leurs bêtes.
12 And YHWH says to Moses and to Aaron, “Because you have not believed in Me to sanctify Me before the eyes of the sons of Israel, therefore you do not bring in this assembly to the land which I have given to them.”
Et l’Éternel dit à Moïse et à Aaron: Parce que vous ne m’avez pas cru, pour me sanctifier aux yeux des fils d’Israël, à cause de cela vous n’introduirez pas cette congrégation dans le pays que je leur donne.
13 These [are] the waters of Meribah, because the sons of Israel have “striven” with YHWH, and He is sanctified among them.
Ce sont là les eaux de Meriba, où les fils d’Israël contestèrent avec l’Éternel; et il se sanctifia en eux.
14 And Moses sends messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom, “Thus said your brother Israel: You have known all the travail which has found us,
Et Moïse envoya de Kadès des messagers au roi d’Édom: Ainsi dit ton frère, Israël: Tu sais toute la fatigue qui nous a atteints.
15 that our fathers go down to Egypt, and we dwell in Egypt [for] many days, and the Egyptians do evil to us and to our fathers;
Nos pères descendirent en Égypte, et nous avons habité en Égypte longtemps, et les Égyptiens nous ont maltraités, nous et nos pères.
16 then we cry to YHWH, and He hears our voice, and sends a Messenger, and is bringing us out of Egypt; and behold, we [are] in Kadesh, a city [in] the extremity of your border.
Et nous avons crié à l’Éternel, et il a entendu notre voix, et il a envoyé un ange, et nous a fait sortir d’Égypte. Et voici, nous sommes à Kadès, ville à l’extrémité de tes limites.
17 Please let us pass over through your land; we do not pass over through a field or through a vineyard, nor do we drink waters of a well; we go the way of the king, we do not turn aside [to] the right or left until we pass over your border.”
Je te prie, que nous passions par ton pays; nous ne passerons pas par les champs, ni par les vignes, et nous ne boirons pas de l’eau des puits; nous marcherons par le chemin du roi, nous ne nous détournerons ni à droite ni à gauche, jusqu’à ce que nous ayons passé tes limites.
18 And Edom says to him, “You do not pass over through me, lest I come out to meet you with the sword.”
Et Édom lui dit: Tu ne passeras pas chez moi, de peur que je ne sorte à ta rencontre avec l’épée.
19 And the sons of Israel say to him, “We go in the highway, and if we drink of your waters—I and my livestock—then I have given their price; only, let me pass over on my feet, nothing [more].”
Et les fils d’Israël lui dirent: Nous monterons par le chemin battu; et si nous buvons de tes eaux, moi et mon bétail, j’en donnerai le prix; seulement, sans autre chose, je passerai avec mes pieds.
20 And he says, “You do not pass over”; and Edom comes out to meet him with many people and with a strong hand;
Et [Édom] dit: Tu ne passeras pas. Et Édom sortit à sa rencontre avec un grand peuple, et à main forte.
21 and Edom refuses to permit Israel to pass over through his border, and Israel turns aside from off him.
Et Édom refusa de laisser passer Israël par ses limites; et Israël se détourna d’auprès de lui.
22 And the sons of Israel, all the congregation, journey from Kadesh and come to Mount Hor,
Et ils partirent de Kadès; et les fils d’Israël, toute l’assemblée, vinrent à la montagne de Hor.
23 and YHWH speaks to Moses and to Aaron in Mount Hor, on the border of the land of Edom, saying,
Et l’Éternel parla à Moïse et à Aaron, dans la montagne de Hor, sur la limite du pays d’Édom, en disant:
24 “Aaron is gathered to his people, for he does not go into the land which I have given to the sons of Israel, because that you provoked My mouth at the waters of Meribah.
Aaron sera recueilli vers ses peuples, car il n’entrera pas dans le pays que j’ai donné aux fils d’Israël, parce que vous vous êtes rebellés contre mon commandement aux eaux de Meriba.
25 Take Aaron and his son Eleazar, and cause them to go up Mount Hor,
Prends Aaron et Éléazar, son fils, et fais-les monter sur la montagne de Hor;
26 and strip Aaron of his garments, and you have clothed his son Eleazar [with] them, and Aaron is gathered, and dies there.”
et dépouille Aaron de ses vêtements, et fais-les revêtir à Éléazar, son fils; et Aaron sera recueilli, et mourra là.
27 And Moses does as YHWH has commanded, and they go up to Mount Hor before the eyes of all the congregation,
Et Moïse fit comme l’Éternel avait commandé; et ils montèrent sur la montagne de Hor aux yeux de toute l’assemblée.
28 and Moses strips Aaron of his garments, and clothes his son Eleazar with them, and Aaron dies there on the top of the mountain; and Moses comes down—Eleazar also—from the mountain,
Et Moïse dépouilla Aaron de ses vêtements, et en revêtit Éléazar, son fils; et Aaron mourut là, au sommet de la montagne; puis Moïse et Éléazar descendirent de la montagne.
29 and all the congregation sees that Aaron has expired, and all the house of Israel laments Aaron [for] thirty days.
Et toute l’assemblée vit qu’Aaron avait expiré, et toute la maison d’Israël pleura Aaron 30 jours.
