Nehemiah 13
1 On that day there was read in the scroll of Moses, in the ears of the people, and it has been found written in it that an Ammonite and Moabite does not come into the assembly of God for all time,
Le même jour on lut dans le Livre de Moïse aux oreilles du peuple, et l'on y trouva écrit: Aucun Ammonite ou Moabite n'aura entrée dans l'Assemblée de Dieu, jamais,
2 because they have not come before the sons of Israel with bread and with water, and hire against them Balaam to revile them, and our God turns the reviling into a blessing.
parce qu'ils ne prévinrent pas les enfants d'Israël avec le pain et l'eau, et qu'ils soudoyèrent contre eux Balaam pour les maudire; mais notre Dieu fit tourner la malédiction en bénédiction.
3 And it comes to pass, at their hearing the Law, that they separate all the mixed people from Israel.
Et lorsqu'ils eurent entendu cette loi, ils séparèrent d'Israël tous les étrangers.
4 And before this Eliashib the priest, appointed over chambers of the house of our God, [is] a relation of Tobiah,
Cependant avec cela le Prêtre Eliasib, préposé sur une cellule dans la maison de Dieu, parent de Tobie,
5 and he makes for him a great chamber, and there they were formerly putting the present, the frankincense, and the vessels, and the tithe of the grain, the new wine, and the oil—the commanded thing of the Levites, and the singers, and the gatekeepers—and the raised-offering of the priests.
lui avait arrangé une grande cellule où l'on déposait auparavant les offrandes, l'encens et la vaisselle et la dîme du blé, du moût et de l'huile, les redevances dues aux Lévites, aux Chantres et aux Portiers, et ce qui était prélevé pour les Prêtres.
6 And during all this I was not in Jerusalem, for in the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon I came to the king, and at the end of days I have asked of the king,
Et quand cela se fit, je n'étais point à Jérusalem, car c'est la trente-deuxième année d'Arthachsastha, roi de Babel, que je me présentai au roi et à la fin de l'année que j'obtins l'agrément du roi.
7 and I come to Jerusalem, and understand concerning the evil that Eliashib has done for Tobiah, to make to him a chamber in the courts of the house of God,
Étant ainsi arrivé à Jérusalem, je m'aperçus de l'abus qu'avait commis Eliasib en faveur de Tobie en lui laissant l'usage d'une cellule dans les Parvis de la Maison de Dieu,
8 and it is very displeasing to me, and I cast all the vessels of the house of Tobiah outside, out of the chamber,
et je fus fort mécontent, et je jetai tous les meubles de la demeure de Tobie dehors, hors de la cellule.
9 and I command, and they cleanse the chambers, and I bring back there the vessels of the house of God with the present and the frankincense.
Et j'ordonnai qu'on purifiât les cellules, et j'y fis rentrer les meubles de la Maison de Dieu, l'offrande et l'encens.
10 And I know that the portions of the Levites have not been given, and they flee each to his field—the Levites and the singers, doing the work.
Et j'appris que les redevances dues aux Lévites n'avaient point été payées, et qu'avaient fui, chacun vers son champ, les Lévites et Chantres qui exerçaient les fonctions.
11 And I strive with the prefects, and say, “Why has the house of God been forsaken?” And I gather them, and set them on their station;
Alors je pris à partie les chefs et je dis: Pourquoi la Maison de Dieu est-elle délaissée? Et je les rassemblai et les mis à leur poste.
12 and all Judah has brought in the tithe of the grain, and of the new wine, and of the oil, to the treasuries.
Et tout Juda apporta la dîme de blé, moût et huile au trésor.
13 And I appoint treasurers over the treasuries, Shelemiah the priest, and Zadok the scribe, and Pedaiah of the Levites; and by their hand [is] Hanan son of Zaccur, son of Mattaniah, for they have been reckoned steadfast, and on them [it is] to give a portion to their brothers.
Et j'établis comme préposés sur le trésor, Sélémia, le Prêtre, et Tsadoc, le Scribe, et Pedaïa d'entre les Lévites, et comme leurs adjoints, Hanan, fils de Zaccur, fils de Matthania, car ils étaient réputés hommes sûrs, et c'était à eux à faire les répartitions à leurs frères. —
14 Be mindful of me, O my God, for this, and do not blot out my kind acts that I have done, for the house of my God, and for its charges.
Souviens-toi de moi, ô mon Dieu, à cause de cela, et ne raie pas les actes pieux que j'ai accomplis dans la Maison de Dieu et dans son administration!
15 In those days I have seen in Judah those treading wine-vats on Sabbath, and bringing in the sheaves, and loading on the donkeys, and also, wine, grapes, and figs, and every burden, indeed, they are bringing into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day, and I testify in the day of their selling provision.
Dans le même temps, je vis en Juda des pressureurs aux pressoirs le jour du Sabbat et des gens rentrer des gerbes et les charger sur des ânes, ainsi que du vin, des raisins et des figues et toutes sortes de fardeaux, et les amener à Jérusalem le jour du Sabbat. Et je leur fis une remontrance le jour où ils vendaient les denrées.
16 And the Tyrians have dwelt in it, bringing in fish, and every ware, and selling on Sabbath to the sons of Judah and in Jerusalem.
Il s'y trouvait aussi des Tyriens qui apportaient du poisson et toutes sortes de marchandises qu'ils vendaient le jour du Sabbat aux enfants de Juda et de Jérusalem.
17 And I strive with the nobles of Judah, and say to them, “What [is] this evil thing that you are doing, and defiling the Sabbath day?
Alors je pris à partie les notables de Juda et leur dis: Qu'est-ce que ce mal que vous faites là, profanant ainsi le jour du Sabbat?
18 Thus did not your fathers do? And our God brings in on us all this evil, and on this city, and you are adding fierceness on Israel, to defile the Sabbath.”
N'est-ce pas ainsi qu'ont agi vos pères, ensuite de quoi notre Dieu a fait tomber sur nous et sur cette ville tous ces malheurs? Et vous accumulez la colère divine sur Israël par la profanation du Sabbat!
19 And it comes to pass, when the gates of Jerusalem have been dark before the Sabbath, that I command, and the doors are shut, and I command that they do not open them until after the Sabbath; and of my servants I have stationed at the gates; there does not come in a burden on the Sabbath day.
Et lorsqu'il fit sombre dans les Portes de Jérusalem avant le Sabbat, j'ordonnai que les portes fussent fermées, et ordonnai de ne les rouvrir qu'après le Sabbat passé. Et je postai de mes écuyers aux portes, afin qu'il n'entrât aucune charge le jour du Sabbat.
20 And they lodge—the merchants and sellers of all ware—at the outside of Jerusalem, once or twice,
Et les marchands et vendeurs de toutes sortes de marchandises durent passer la nuit en dehors de Jérusalem, une et deux fois.
21 and I testify against them, and say to them, “Why are you lodging in front of the wall? If you repeat [it], I put forth a hand on you”; from that time they have not come in on the Sabbath.
Et je les tançai et leur dis: Pourquoi passez-vous la nuit devant le mur? Si vous réitérez, je mettrai la main sur vous. Dès ce moment ils ne vinrent plus le jour du Sabbat.
22 And I command to the Levites that they be cleansed, and coming in, keeping the gates, to sanctify the Sabbath day. Also, this, remember for me, O my God, and have pity on me, according to the abundance of Your kindness.
Et je dis aux Lévites de se purifier et de venir garder les portes pour sanctifier le jour du Sabbat. — De cela aussi conserve-moi le souvenir, ô mon Dieu, et use de clémence envers moi selon ta grande miséricorde!
23 Also, in those days, I have seen the Jews [who] have settled women of Ashdod, of Ammon, of Moab.
Dans ce temps aussi je vis des Juifs qui avaient épousé des femmes Asdodites, Ammonites, Moabites.
24 And of their sons, half are speaking Ashdoditish—and are not knowing to speak Jewish—and according to the language of people and people.
Et la moitié de leurs fils parlaient asdodite, et ne savaient pas parler le juif, mais bien la langue de tel ou tel de ces peuples-là.
25 And I strive with them, and declare them vile, and strike certain of them, and pluck off their hair, and cause them to swear by God, “You do not give your daughters to their sons, nor do you take of their daughters to your sons, and to yourselves.
Et je les pris à partie, et les maudis et en battis quelques-uns, et leur arrachai les cheveux, et je leur fis jurer ceci par le Nom de Dieu: Vous ne donnerez point vos filles à leurs fils et ne prendrez point de leurs filles pour vos fils, ni pour vous-mêmes.
26 By these did not Solomon king of Israel sin? And among the many nations there was no king like him, and he was beloved by his God, and God makes him king over all Israel—even him [whom] the strange women caused to sin.
N'est-ce pas en ce point qu'a péché Salomon, le roi d'Israël? et dans le nombre des peuples il n'y eut pas de roi comme lui, et il était aimé de son Dieu, et Dieu l'établit roi de tout Israël; néanmoins c'est lui qu'entraînèrent au péché des femmes étrangères!
27 And do we listen to you to do all this great evil, to trespass against our God, to settle strange women?”
Nous faudrait-il vous faire la concession de commettre un si grand crime que de nous révolter contre notre Dieu par des mariages avec des femmes étrangères?
28 And [one] of the sons of Joiada son of Eliashib the high priest, [is] son-in-law to Sanballat the Horonite, and I cause him to flee from off me.
Et l'un des fils de Joïada, fils d'Eliasib, le Grand-Prêtre, était devenu gendre de Saneballat, l'Horonite, et je le chassai loin de moi.
29 Be mindful of them, O my God, for the redeemed of the priesthood, and the covenant of the priesthood, and of the Levites.
Souviens-toi d'eux, ô mon Dieu, à cause de la souillure du Sacerdoce, et de la constitution Sacerdotale et Lévitique!
30 And I have cleansed them from every stranger, and appoint charges to priests and to Levites, each in his work,
Et ainsi, je les purifiai de tout étranger, et je fixai les fonctions pour les Prêtres et pour les Lévites, pour chacun dans son office,
31 and for the wood-offering at appointed times, and for first-fruits. Be mindful of me, O my God, for good.
et les prestations en bois à fournir par époques déterminées, et en prémices. — Garde de moi, ô mon Dieu, un favorable souvenir!
