< Matthew 22 >

1 And Jesus answering, again spoke to them in allegories, saying,
anantaraṁ yīśuḥ punarapi dr̥ṣṭāntēna tān avādīt,
2 “The kingdom of the heavens was likened to a man, a king, who made wedding feasts for his son,
svargīyarājyam ētādr̥śasya nr̥patēḥ samaṁ, yō nija putraṁ vivāhayan sarvvān nimantritān ānētuṁ dāsēyān prahitavān,
3 and he sent forth his servants to call those having been called to the wedding feasts, and they were not willing to come.
kintu tē samāgantuṁ nēṣṭavantaḥ|
4 Again he sent forth other servants, saying, Say to those who have been called: Behold, I prepared my early meal, my oxen and the fatlings have been killed, and all things [are] ready, come to the wedding feasts;
tatō rājā punarapi dāsānanyān ityuktvā prēṣayāmāsa, nimantritān vadata, paśyata, mama bhējyamāsāditamāstē, nijavṭaṣādipuṣṭajantūn mārayitvā sarvvaṁ khādyadravyamāsāditavān, yūyaṁ vivāhamāgacchata|
5 and they, having disregarded [it], went away, one to his own field, and the other to his merchandise;
tathapi tē tucchīkr̥tya kēcit nijakṣētraṁ kēcid vāṇijyaṁ prati svasvamārgēṇa calitavantaḥ|
6 and the rest, having laid hold on his servants, mistreated and slew [them].
anyē lōkāstasya dāsēyān dhr̥tvā daurātmyaṁ vyavahr̥tya tānavadhiṣuḥ|
7 And the king having heard, was angry, and having sent forth his soldiers, he destroyed those murderers, and their city he set on fire;
anantaraṁ sa nr̥patistāṁ vārttāṁ śrutvā krudhyan sainyāni prahitya tān ghātakān hatvā tēṣāṁ nagaraṁ dāhayāmāsa|
8 then he says to his servants, The wedding feast indeed is ready, and those called were not worthy,
tataḥ sa nijadāsēyān babhāṣē, vivāhīyaṁ bhōjyamāsāditamāstē, kintu nimantritā janā ayōgyāḥ|
9 be going, then, on to the cross-ways, and as many as you may find, call to the wedding feasts.
tasmād yūyaṁ rājamārgaṁ gatvā yāvatō manujān paśyata, tāvataēva vivāhīyabhōjyāya nimantrayata|
10 And those servants, having gone forth to the ways, gathered all, as many as they found, both bad and good, and the wedding was filled with those reclining.
tadā tē dāsēyā rājamārgaṁ gatvā bhadrān abhadrān vā yāvatō janān dadr̥śuḥ, tāvataēva saṁgr̥hyānayan; tatō'bhyāgatamanujai rvivāhagr̥ham apūryyata|
11 And the king having come in to view those reclining, saw there a man not clothed with wedding clothes,
tadānīṁ sa rājā sarvvānabhyāgatān draṣṭum abhyantaramāgatavān; tadā tatra vivāhīyavasanahīnamēkaṁ janaṁ vīkṣya taṁ jagād,
12 and he says to him, Friend, how did you come in here, not having wedding clothes? And he was speechless.
hē mitra, tvaṁ vivāhīyavasanaṁ vinā kathamatra praviṣṭavān? tēna sa niruttarō babhūva|
13 Then the king said to the servants, Having bound his feet and hands, take him up and cast forth into the outer darkness, there will be the weeping and the gnashing of the teeth;
tadā rājā nijānucarān avadat, ētasya karacaraṇān baddhā yatra rōdanaṁ dantairdantagharṣaṇañca bhavati, tatra vahirbhūtatamisrē taṁ nikṣipata|
14 for many are called, and few chosen.”
itthaṁ bahava āhūtā alpē manōbhimatāḥ|
15 Then the Pharisees having gone, took counsel how they might ensnare Him in words,
anantaraṁ phirūśinaḥ pragatya yathā saṁlāpēna tam unmāthē pātayēyustathā mantrayitvā
16 and they send to Him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we have known that You are true, and the way of God in truth You teach, and You are not caring for anyone, for You do not look to the face of men;
hērōdīyamanujaiḥ sākaṁ nijaśiṣyagaṇēna taṁ prati kathayāmāsuḥ, hē gurō, bhavān satyaḥ satyamīśvarīyamārgamupadiśati, kamapi mānuṣaṁ nānurudhyatē, kamapi nāpēkṣatē ca, tad vayaṁ jānīmaḥ|
17 tell us, therefore, what do You think? Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar or not?”
ataḥ kaisarabhūpāya karō'smākaṁ dātavyō na vā? atra bhavatā kiṁ budhyatē? tad asmān vadatu|
18 And Jesus having known their wickedness, said, “Why do you tempt Me, hypocrites?
tatō yīśustēṣāṁ khalatāṁ vijñāya kathitavān, rē kapaṭinaḥ yuyaṁ kutō māṁ parikṣadhvē?
19 Show Me the tribute-coin.” And they brought to Him a denarius;
tatkaradānasya mudrāṁ māṁ darśayata| tadānīṁ taistasya samīpaṁ mudrācaturthabhāga ānītē
20 and He says to them, “Whose [is] this image and the inscription?”
sa tān papraccha, atra kasyēyaṁ mūrtti rnāma cāstē? tē jagaduḥ, kaisarabhūpasya|
21 They say to Him, “Caesar’s”; then He says to them, “Render therefore the things of Caesar to Caesar, and the things of God to God”;
tataḥ sa uktavāna, kaisarasya yat tat kaisarāya datta, īśvarasya yat tad īśvarāya datta|
22 and having heard they wondered, and having left Him they went away.
iti vākyaṁ niśamya tē vismayaṁ vijñāya taṁ vihāya calitavantaḥ|
23 In that day there came near to Him Sadducees who are saying there is not a resurrection, and they questioned Him, saying,
tasminnahani sidūkinō'rthāt śmaśānāt nōtthāsyantīti vākyaṁ yē vadanti, tē yīśērantikam āgatya papracchuḥ,
24 “Teacher, Moses said if anyone may die having no children, his brother will marry his wife, and will raise up seed to his brother.
hē gurō, kaścinmanujaścēt niḥsantānaḥ san prāṇān tyajati, tarhi tasya bhrātā tasya jāyāṁ vyuhya bhrātuḥ santānam utpādayiṣyatīti mūsā ādiṣṭavān|
25 And there were with us seven brothers, and the first having married died, and having no seed, he left his wife to his brother;
kintvasmākamatra kē'pi janāḥ saptasahōdarā āsan, tēṣāṁ jyēṣṭha ēkāṁ kanyāṁ vyavahāt, aparaṁ prāṇatyāgakālē svayaṁ niḥsantānaḥ san tāṁ striyaṁ svabhrātari samarpitavān,
26 in like manner also the second, and the third, to the seventh,
tatō dvitīyādisaptamāntāśca tathaiva cakruḥ|
27 and last of all the woman also died;
śēṣē sāpī nārī mamāra|
28 therefore in the resurrection, of which of the seven will she be wife—for all had her?”
mr̥tānām utthānasamayē tēṣāṁ saptānāṁ madhyē sā nārī kasya bhāryyā bhaviṣyati? yasmāt sarvvaēva tāṁ vyavahan|
29 And Jesus answering said to them, “You go astray, not knowing the Writings, nor the power of God;
tatō yīśuḥ pratyavādīt, yūyaṁ dharmmapustakam īśvarīyāṁ śaktiñca na vijñāya bhrāntimantaḥ|
30 for in the resurrection they do not marry, nor are they given in marriage, but are as messengers of God in Heaven.
utthānaprāptā lōkā na vivahanti, na ca vācā dīyantē, kintvīśvarasya svargasthadūtānāṁ sadr̥śā bhavanti|
31 And concerning the resurrection of the dead, did you not read that which was spoken to you by God, saying,
aparaṁ mr̥tānāmutthānamadhi yuṣmān pratīyamīśvarōktiḥ,
32 I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not a God of dead men, but of living.”
"ahamibrāhīma īśvara ishāka īśvarō yākūba īśvara" iti kiṁ yuṣmābhi rnāpāṭhi? kintvīśvarō jīvatām īśvara: , sa mr̥tānāmīśvarō nahi|
33 And having heard, the multitudes were astonished at His teaching;
iti śrutvā sarvvē lōkāstasyōpadēśād vismayaṁ gatāḥ|
34 and the Pharisees, having heard that He silenced the Sadducees, were gathered together to Him;
anantaraṁ sidūkinām niruttaratvavārtāṁ niśamya phirūśina ēkatra militavantaḥ,
35 and one of them, a lawyer, questioned, tempting Him, and saying,
tēṣāmēkō vyavasthāpakō yīśuṁ parīkṣituṁ papaccha,
36 “Teacher, which [is] the great command in the Law?”
hē gurō vyavasthāśāstramadhyē kājñā śrēṣṭhā?
37 And Jesus said to him, “You will love the LORD your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your understanding—
tatō yīśuruvāca, tvaṁ sarvvāntaḥkaraṇaiḥ sarvvaprāṇaiḥ sarvvacittaiśca sākaṁ prabhau paramēśvarē prīyasva,
38 this is a first and great command;
ēṣā prathamamahājñā| tasyāḥ sadr̥śī dvitīyājñaiṣā,
39 and the second [is] like to it: You will love your neighbor as yourself;
tava samīpavāsini svātmanīva prēma kuru|
40 on these—the two commands—all the Law and the Prophets hang.”
anayō rdvayōrājñayōḥ kr̥tsnavyavasthāyā bhaviṣyadvaktr̥granthasya ca bhārastiṣṭhati|
41 And the Pharisees having been gathered together, Jesus questioned them,
anantaraṁ phirūśinām ēkatra sthitikālē yīśustān papraccha,
42 saying, “What do you think concerning the Christ? Of whom is He Son?” They say to Him, “Of David.”
khrīṣṭamadhi yuṣmākaṁ kīdr̥gbōdhō jāyatē? sa kasya santānaḥ? tatastē pratyavadan, dāyūdaḥ santānaḥ|
43 He says to them, “How then does David in the Spirit call Him Lord, saying,
tadā sa uktavān, tarhi dāyūd katham ātmādhiṣṭhānēna taṁ prabhuṁ vadati?
44 The LORD said to my Lord, Sit at My right hand, Until I may make Your enemies Your footstool?
yathā mama prabhumidaṁ vākyamavadat paramēśvaraḥ| tavārīn pādapīṭhaṁ tē yāvannahi karōmyahaṁ| tāvat kālaṁ madīyē tvaṁ dakṣapārśva upāviśa| atō yadi dāyūd taṁ prabhuṁ vadati, rtiha sa kathaṁ tasya santānō bhavati?
45 If then David calls Him Lord, how is He his son?”
tadānīṁ tēṣāṁ kōpi tadvākyasya kimapyuttaraṁ dātuṁ nāśaknōt;
46 And no one was able to answer Him a word, nor did any dare question Him from that day [on].
