< Matthew 14 >

1 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the fame of Jesus,
Ngalesosikhathi uHerodi umtetrarki wezwa indumela kaJesu,
2 and said to his servants, “This is John the Immerser, he rose from the dead, and because of this the mighty energies are working in him.”
wasesithi ezincekwini zakhe: Lo nguJohane uMbhabhathizi; yena uvukile kwabafileyo, kungakho-ke imisebenzi yamandla isebenza kuye.
3 For Herod having laid hold on John, bound him, and put him in prison, because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife,
Ngoba uHerodi wayembambile uJohane wambopha wamfaka entolongweni, ngenxa kaHerodiyasi umkaFiliphu umfowabo;
4 for John was saying to him, “It is not lawful to you to have her,”
ngoba uJohane wayethe kuye: Kawuvunyelwa ukuba laye.
5 and willing to kill him, he feared the multitude, because as a prophet they were holding him.
Njalo efuna ukumbulala, wesaba ixuku, ngoba lalimphatha njengomprofethi.
6 But the birthday of Herod being kept, the daughter of Herodias danced in the midst, and pleased Herod,
Kodwa kwathi kugcinwa usuku lokuzalwa kukaHerodi, indodakazi kaHerodiyasi yagida phakathi kwabo, yamthokozisa uHerodi.
7 after which with an oath he professed to give her whatever she might ask.
Ngakho wathembisa ngesifungo ukuyinika loba yini ezayicela.
8 And she, having been instigated by her mother, says, “Give me here on a plate the head of John the Immerser”;
Kodwa yona, isilayiwe ngunina, yathi: Ngiphe lapha emganwini ikhanda likaJohane uMbhabhathizi.
9 and the king was grieved, but because of the oaths and of those dining with him, he commanded [it] to be given;
Inkosi yasisiba losizi, kodwa ngenxa yezifungo langalabo ababehlezi layo ekudleni yalaya ukuthi inikwe.
10 and having sent, he beheaded John in the prison,
Yasithuma yamquma uJohane ikhanda entolongweni.
11 and his head was brought on a plate, and was given to the girl, and she brought [it] near to her mother.
Ikhanda lakhe laselilethwa ngomganu, lanikwa intombi; njalo yona yalisa kunina.
12 And his disciples having come, took up the body, and buried it, and having come, they told Jesus,
Kwasekusiza abafundi bakhe bathatha isidumbu, basingcwaba; basebesuka bambikela uJesu.
13 and Jesus having heard, withdrew from there in a boat to a desolate place by Himself, and the multitudes having heard followed Him on land from the cities.
UJesu esezwile wasuka lapho ngomkhumbi waya endaweni eyinkangala eyedwa; kodwa amaxuku ekuzwa amlandela ngenyawo evela emizini.
14 And Jesus having come forth, saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion on them, and healed their sick;
UJesu esephumile wabona ixuku elikhulu, waba lesihelo ngabo, wasilisa abagulayo babo.
15 and evening having come, His disciples came to Him, saying, “The place is desolate, and the hour has now past, let away the multitudes that, having gone into the villages, they may buy food for themselves.”
Kwathi sekuhlwile abafundi bakhe beza kuye, bathi: Lindawo iyinkangala, lesikhathi sesihambile; liyekele ixuku lihambe, ukuze baye emizaneni bazithengele ukudla.
16 And Jesus said to them, “They have no need to go away—you give them to eat.”
Kodwa uJesu wathi kubo: Kakuswelekanga ukuthi bahambe; banikeni lina ukuthi badle.
17 And they say to Him, “We have nothing here except five loaves and two fishes.”
Kodwa bathi kuye: Kasila lapha ngaphandle kwezinkwa ezinhlanu lenhlanzi ezimbili.
18 And He said, “Bring them to Me here.”
Wasesithi: Ziletheni lapha kimi.
19 And having commanded the multitudes to recline on the grass, and having taken the five loaves and the two fishes, having looked up to the sky, He blessed, and having broken, He gave the loaves to the disciples, and the disciples [gave] to the multitudes,
Waselaya amaxuku ukuthi ahlale phansi etshanini, wathatha izinkwa ezinhlanu lenhlanzi ezimbili, wakhangela phezulu ezulwini, wabusisa, esezihlephule wabanika abafundi izinkwa, labafundi bapha amaxuku.
20 and they all ate, and were filled, and they took up what was over of the broken pieces twelve hand-baskets full;
Basebesidla bonke, basutha; badobha imvuthu ezazisele, izitsha ezigcweleyo ezilitshumi lambili.
21 and those eating were about five thousand men, apart from women and children.
Lalabo abasebedlile babengamadoda angaba zinkulungwane ezinhlanu, ngaphandle kwabesifazana labantwana.
22 And immediately Jesus constrained His disciples to go into the boat, and to go before Him to the other side, until He might let away the multitudes;
Njalo uJesu wahle wacindezela abafundi bakhe ukuthi bangene emkhunjini, njalo bamqalele ukuya ngaphetsheya, esayekela amaxuku ahambe.
23 and having let away the multitudes, He went up to the mountain by Himself to pray, and evening having come, He was there alone,
Kwathi eseyekele amaxuku ahamba, wenyukela entabeni eyedwa ukuze akhuleke; kwathi sekuhlwile, wayeyedwa lapho.
24 and the boat was now in the midst of the sea, distressed by the waves, for the wind was contrary.
Kodwa umkhumbi wawusuphakathi kolwandle, utshukunyiswa ngamagagasi; ngoba umoya wawuphambene labo.
25 And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went away to them, walking on the sea,
Kwathi ngesikhathi somlindo wesine wobusuku uJesu weza kubo, ehamba phezu kolwandle.
26 and the disciples having seen Him walking on the sea, were troubled, saying, “It is an apparition,” and from the fear they cried out;
Kodwa kwathi abafundi bembona ehamba phezu kolwandle bethuka, bathi: Lithonga. Basebekhala ngokwesaba.
27 and immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take courage! I AM; do not be afraid.”
Kodwa uJesu wahle wakhuluma labo, wathi: Manini isibindi; yimi; lingesabi.
28 And Peter answering Him said, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the waters”;
UPetro wasemphendula wathi: Nkosi, uba kunguwe, ngilaya ukuthi ngize kuwe phezu kwamanzi.
29 and He said, “Come”; and having gone down from the boat, Peter walked on the waters to come to Jesus,
Wasesithi: Woza. UPetro wasesehla emkhunjini wahamba phezu kwamanzi, ukuze aye kuJesu.
30 but seeing the vehement wind, he was afraid, and having begun to sink, he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!”
Kodwa ebona umoya olamandla wesaba; wathi eseqala ukutshona wakhala, wathi: Nkosi, ngisindisa!
31 And immediately Jesus, having stretched forth the hand, laid hold of him and says to him, “Little faith! For why did you waver?”
Njalo uJesu wahle welula isandla, wambamba, wathi kuye: Wena olokukholwa okuncinyane, uthandabuzelani?
32 And they having gone into the boat, the wind stilled,
Sebengenile emkhunjini, umoya wathula.
33 and those in the boat having come, worshiped Him, saying, “You are truly God’s Son.”
Abasemkhunjini basebesiza bamkhonza bathi: Ngeqiniso wena uyiNdodana kaNkulunkulu.
34 And having passed over, they came into the land of Gennesaret,
Kwathi sebechaphile bafika elizweni leGenesaretha.
35 and having recognized Him, the men of that place sent forth to all that surrounding region, and they brought to Him all who were ill,
Esemazi amadoda akuleyondawo athumela ilizwi kuso sonke lesosigaba esizingelezeleyo, aletha kuye bonke abagulayo.
36 and were calling on Him that they might only touch the fringe of His garment, and as many as touched were saved.
Basebemncenga, ukuthi bathinte nje umphetho wesembatho sakhe; njalo bonke abathintayo basiliswa.
