< Luke 1 >

1 Seeing that many took in hand to set in order a narration of the matters that have been fully assured among us,
Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us,
2 as they delivered to us, who from the beginning became eyewitnesses, and officers of the word,
Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word; (logos)
3 it seemed good also to me, having followed from the first after all things exactly, to write to you in order, most noble Theophilus,
It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto you in order, most excellent Theophilus,
4 that you may know the certainty of the things wherein you were instructed.
That you might know the certainty of those things, (logos) wherein you have been instructed.
5 There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest, by name Zacharias, of the division of Abijah, and his wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name Elizabeth;
THERE was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.
6 and they were both righteous before God, going on in all the commands and righteousnesses of the LORD blameless,
And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.
7 and they had no child, because that Elizabeth was barren, and both were advanced in their days.
And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years.
8 And it came to pass, in his acting as priest, in the order of his division before God,
And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest's office before God in the order of his course,
9 according to the custom of the priesthood, his lot was to make incense, having gone into the temple of the LORD,
According to the custom of the priest's office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord.
10 and all the multitude of the people were praying outside, at the hour of the incense.
And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the time of incense.
11 And there appeared to him a messenger of the LORD standing on the right side of the altar of the incense,
And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.
12 and Zacharias, having seen, was troubled, and fear fell on him;
And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.
13 and the messenger said to him, “Do not fear, Zacharias, for your supplication was heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear a son to you, and you will call his name John,
But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for your prayer is heard; and your wife Elisabeth shall bear you a son, and you shall call his name John.
14 and there will be joy to you, and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth,
And you shall have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.
15 for he will be great before the LORD, and wine and strong drink he may not drink, and he will be full of the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb;
For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Spirit, (pneuma) even from his mother's womb.
16 and he will turn many of the sons of Israel to the LORD their God,
And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.
17 and he will go before Him, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn hearts of fathers to children, and disobedient ones to the wisdom of righteous ones, to make ready for the LORD, a people prepared.”
And he shall go before him in the spirit (pneuma) and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.
18 And Zacharias said to the messenger, “Whereby will I know this? For I am aged, and my wife is advanced in her days?”
And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.
19 And the messenger answering said to him, “I am Gabriel, who has been standing near before God, and I was sent to speak to you, and to proclaim this good news to you,
And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto you, and to show you these glad tidings.
20 and behold, you will be silent, and not able to speak, until the day that these things will come to pass, because you did not believe my words that will be fulfilled in their season.”
And, behold, you shall be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because you believe not my words, (logos) which shall be fulfilled in their season.
21 And the people were waiting for Zacharias, and wondering at his lingering in the temple,
And the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple.
22 and having come out, he was not able to speak to them, and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple, and he was beckoning to them, and remained mute.
And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: for he beckoned unto them, and remained speechless.
23 And it came to pass, when the days of his service were fulfilled, he went away to his house,
And it came to pass, that, as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house.
24 and after those days, his wife Elizabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying,
And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying,
25 “Thus the LORD has done to me, in days in which He looked on [me], to take away my reproach among men.”
Thus has the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men.
26 And in the sixth month the messenger Gabriel was sent by God, to a city of Galilee, the name of which [is] Nazareth,
And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,
27 to a virgin, betrothed to a man, whose name [is] Joseph, of the house of David, and the name of the virgin [is] Mary.
To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.
28 And the messenger having come in to her, said, “Greetings, favored one, the LORD [is] with you; blessed [are] you among women”;
And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, you that are highly favoured, the Lord is with you: blessed are you among women.
29 and she, having seen, was troubled at his word, and was reasoning of what kind this salutation may be.
And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, (logos) and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.
30 And the messenger said to her, “Do not fear, Mary, for you have found favor with God;
And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for you have found favour with God.
31 and behold, you will conceive in the womb, and will bring forth a Son, and call His Name Jesus;
And, behold, you shall conceive in your womb, and bring forth a son, and shall call his name JESUS.
32 He will be great, and He will be called Son of the Highest, and the LORD God will give Him the throne of His father David,
He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:
33 and He will reign over the house of Jacob for all ages; and of His kingdom there will be no end.” (aiōn g165)
And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. (aiōn g165)
34 And Mary said to the messenger, “How will this be, seeing I do not know a husband?”
Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?
35 And the messenger answering said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you, therefore also the holy-begotten thing will be called Son of God;
And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Spirit (pneuma) shall come upon you, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow you: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of you shall be called the Son of God.
36 and behold, Elizabeth, your relative, she also has conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month to her who was called barren;
And, behold, your cousin Elisabeth, she has also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.
37 because nothing will be impossible with God.”
For with God nothing (rhema) shall be impossible.
38 And Mary said, “Behold, the maidservant of the LORD; let it be to me according to your saying,” and the messenger went away from her.
And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to your word. (rhema) And the angel departed from her.
39 And Mary having arisen in those days, went into the hill-country, with haste, to a city of Judea,
And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda;
40 and entered into the house of Zacharias, and greeted Elizabeth.
And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.
41 And it came to pass, when Elizabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the baby leapt in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit,
And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit: (pneuma)
42 and spoke out with a loud voice and said, “Blessed [are] you among women, and blessed [is] the Fruit of your womb;
And she spoke out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.
43 and from where [is] this to me, that the mother of my Lord might come to me?
And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
44 For behold, when the voice of your salutation came to my ears, the baby in my womb leapt in gladness;
For, lo, as soon as the voice of your salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.
45 and blessed [is] she who believed, for there will be a completion to the things spoken to her from the LORD.”
And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord.
46 And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the LORD,
And Mary said, My soul does magnify the Lord,
47 And my spirit was glad on God my Savior,
And my spirit (pneuma) has rejoiced in God my Saviour.
48 Because He looked on the lowliness of His maidservant, For behold, from now on all the generations will call me blessed,
For he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
49 For He who is mighty did great things to me, And holy [is] His Name,
For he that is mighty has done to me great things; and holy is his name.
50 And His kindness [is] to generations of generations, To those fearing Him;
And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation.
51 He did powerfully with His arm, He scattered abroad the proud in the thought of their heart,
He has showed strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
52 He brought down the mighty from thrones, And He exalted the lowly,
He has put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree.
53 He filled the hungry with good, And the rich He sent away empty;
He has filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he has sent empty away.
54 He has taken hold of His servant Israel, To remember kindness,
He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy;
55 As He spoke to our fathers, To Abraham and to his seed—throughout the age.” (aiōn g165)
As he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever. (aiōn g165)
56 And Mary remained with her about three months, and turned back to her house.
And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house.
57 And to Elizabeth was the time fulfilled for her bringing forth, and she bore a son,
Now Elisabeth's full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son.
58 and the neighbors and her relatives heard that the LORD was making His kindness great with her, and they were rejoicing with her.
And her neighbours and her cousins heard how the Lord had showed great mercy upon her; and they rejoiced with her.
59 And it came to pass, on the eighth day, they came to circumcise the child, and they were calling him by the name of his father, Zacharias,
And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father.
60 and his mother answering said, “No, but he will be called John.”
And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John.
61 And they said to her, “There is none among your relatives who is called by this name,”
And they said unto her, There is none of your kindred that is called by this name.
62 and they were making signs to his father, what he would wish him to be called,
And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called.
63 and having asked for a tablet, he wrote, saying, “John is his name”; and they all wondered;
And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all.
64 and his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue, and he was speaking, praising God.
And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spoke, and praised God.
65 And fear came on all those dwelling around them, and in all the hill-country of Judea were all these sayings spoken of,
And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings (rhema) were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judaea.
66 and all who heard laid them up in their hearts, saying, “What then will this child be?” And the hand of the LORD was with him.
And all they that heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, What manner of child shall this be! And the hand of the Lord was with him.
67 And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying,
And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Spirit, (pneuma) and prophesied, saying,
68 “Blessed [is] the LORD, the God of Israel, Because He looked on, And worked redemption for His people,
Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he has visited and redeemed his people,
69 And raised a horn of salvation to us, In the house of His servant David,
And has raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David;
70 As He spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets, Which have been from the age; (aiōn g165)
As he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began: (aiōn g165)
71 Salvation from our enemies, And out of the hand of all hating us,
That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us;
72 To do kindness with our fathers, And to be mindful of His holy covenant,
To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant;
73 An oath that He swore to Abraham our father,
The oath which he swore to our father Abraham,
74 To give to us, without fear, Having been delivered out of the hand of our enemies,
That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear,
75 To serve Him, in holiness and righteousness Before Him, all the days of our life.
In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life.
76 And you, child, Prophet of the Highest will you be called; For you will go before the face of the LORD, To prepare His ways.
And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Highest: for you shall go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways;
77 To give knowledge of salvation to His people In forgiveness of their sins,
To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins,
78 Through the yearnings of our God, In which the rising from on high looked on us,
Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high has visited us,
79 To give light to those sitting in darkness and death-shade, To guide our feet to a way of peace.”
To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.
80 And the child grew, and was strengthened in spirit, and he was in the deserts until the day of his showing to Israel.
And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, (pneuma) and was in the deserts till the day of his showing unto Israel.
