< Luke 7 >
1 And when He completed all His sayings in the ears of the people, He went into Capernaum;
tataH paraM sa lOkAnAM karNagOcarE tAn sarvvAn upadEzAn samApya yadA kapharnAhUmpuraM pravizati
2 and a certain centurion’s servant being ill, was about to die, who was much valued by him,
tadA zatasEnApatEH priyadAsa EkO mRtakalpaH pIPita AsIt|
3 and having heard about Jesus, he sent to Him elders of the Jews, imploring Him, that having come He might thoroughly save his servant.
ataH sEnApati ryIzO rvArttAM nizamya dAsasyArOgyakaraNAya tasyAgamanArthaM vinayakaraNAya yihUdIyAn kiyataH prAcaH prESayAmAsa|
4 And they, having come near to Jesus, were calling on Him earnestly, saying, “He is worthy to whom You will do this,
tE yIzOrantikaM gatvA vinayAtizayaM vaktumArEbhirE, sa sEnApati rbhavatOnugrahaM prAptum arhati|
5 for he loves our nation, and he built to us the synagogue.”
yataH sOsmajjAtIyESu lOkESu prIyatE tathAsmatkRtE bhajanagEhaM nirmmitavAn|
6 And Jesus was going on with them, and now when He is not far distant from the house the centurion sent to Him friends, saying to Him, “Lord, do not be troubled, for I am not worthy that You may enter under my roof;
tasmAd yIzustaiH saha gatvA nivEzanasya samIpaM prApa, tadA sa zatasEnApati rvakSyamANavAkyaM taM vaktuM bandhUn prAhiNOt| hE prabhO svayaM zramO na karttavyO yad bhavatA madgEhamadhyE pAdArpaNaM kriyEta tadapyahaM nArhAmi,
7 for this reason I did not consider myself worthy to come to You, but say in a word, and my boy will be healed;
kinjcAhaM bhavatsamIpaM yAtumapi nAtmAnaM yOgyaM buddhavAn, tatO bhavAn vAkyamAtraM vadatu tEnaiva mama dAsaH svasthO bhaviSyati|
8 for I also am a man placed under authority, having under myself soldiers, and I say to this [one], Go, and he goes; and to another, Be coming, and he comes; and to my servant, Do this, and he does [it].”
yasmAd ahaM parAdhInOpi mamAdhInA yAH sEnAH santi tAsAm EkajanaM prati yAhIti mayA prOktE sa yAti; tadanyaM prati AyAhIti prOktE sa AyAti; tathA nijadAsaM prati Etat kurvviti prOktE sa tadEva karOti|
9 And having heard these things Jesus wondered at him, and having turned to the multitude following Him, He said, “I say to you, not even in Israel did I find so much faith”;
yIzuridaM vAkyaM zrutvA vismayaM yayau, mukhaM parAvartya pazcAdvarttinO lOkAn babhASE ca, yuSmAnahaM vadAmi isrAyElO vaMzamadhyEpi vizvAsamIdRzaM na prApnavaM|
10 and those sent, having turned back to the house, found the ailing servant in health.
tatastE prESitA gRhaM gatvA taM pIPitaM dAsaM svasthaM dadRzuH|
11 And it came to pass, on the next day, He was going on to a city called Nain, and there were going with Him many of His disciples, and a great multitude,
parE'hani sa nAyInAkhyaM nagaraM jagAma tasyAnEkE ziSyA anyE ca lOkAstEna sArddhaM yayuH|
12 and as He came near to the gate of the city, then, behold, one dead was being carried forth, an only son of his mother, and she a widow, and a great multitude of the city was with her.
tESu tannagarasya dvArasannidhiM prAptESu kiyantO lOkA EkaM mRtamanujaM vahantO nagarasya bahiryAnti, sa tanmAturEkaputrastanmAtA ca vidhavA; tayA sArddhaM tannagarIyA bahavO lOkA Asan|
13 And the LORD having seen her, was moved with compassion toward her and said to her, “Do not be weeping”;
prabhustAM vilOkya sAnukampaH kathayAmAsa, mA rOdIH| sa samIpamitvA khaTvAM pasparza tasmAd vAhakAH sthagitAstamyuH;
14 and having come near, He touched the bier, and those carrying [it] stood still, and He said, “Young man, to you I say, Arise”;
tadA sa uvAca hE yuvamanuSya tvamuttiSTha, tvAmaham AjnjApayAmi|
15 and the dead sat up, and began to speak, and He gave him to his mother;
tasmAt sa mRtO janastatkSaNamutthAya kathAM prakathitaH; tatO yIzustasya mAtari taM samarpayAmAsa|
16 and fear took hold of all, and they were glorifying God, saying, “A great prophet has risen among us,” and, “God looked on His people.”
tasmAt sarvvE lOkAH zazagkirE; EkO mahAbhaviSyadvAdI madhyE'smAkam samudait, Izvarazca svalOkAnanvagRhlAt kathAmimAM kathayitvA IzvaraM dhanyaM jagaduH|
17 And the account of this went forth in all Judea about Him, and in all the region around.
tataH paraM samastaM yihUdAdEzaM tasya caturdiksthadEzanjca tasyaitatkIrtti rvyAnazE|
18 And the disciples of John told him about all these things,
tataH paraM yOhanaH ziSyESu taM tadvRttAntaM jnjApitavatsu
19 and John having called near a certain two of his disciples, sent to Jesus, saying, “Are You He who is coming, or do we look for another?”
sa svaziSyANAM dvau janAvAhUya yIzuM prati vakSyamANaM vAkyaM vaktuM prESayAmAsa, yasyAgamanam apEkSya tiSThAmO vayaM kiM sa Eva janastvaM? kiM vayamanyamapEkSya sthAsyAmaH?
20 And having come near to Him, the men said, “John the Immerser sent us to You, saying, Are You He who is coming, or do we look for another?”
pazcAttau mAnavau gatvA kathayAmAsatuH, yasyAgamanam apEkSya tiSThAmO vayaM, kiM saEva janastvaM? kiM vayamanyamapEkSya sthAsyAmaH? kathAmimAM tubhyaM kathayituM yOhan majjaka AvAM prESitavAn|
21 And in that hour He cured many from diseases, and plagues, and evil spirits, and He granted sight to many blind.
tasmin daNPE yIzUrOgiNO mahAvyAdhimatO duSTabhUtagrastAMzca bahUn svasthAn kRtvA, anEkAndhEbhyazcakSuMSi dattvA pratyuvAca,
22 And Jesus answering said to them, “Having gone on, report to John what you saw and heard, that blind men see again, lame walk, lepers are cleansed, deaf hear, dead are raised, poor have good news proclaimed;
yuvAM vrajatam andhA nEtrANi khanjjAzcaraNAni ca prApnuvanti, kuSThinaH pariSkriyantE, badhirAH zravaNAni mRtAzca jIvanAni prApnuvanti, daridrANAM samIpESu susaMvAdaH pracAryyatE, yaM prati vighnasvarUpOhaM na bhavAmi sa dhanyaH,
23 and blessed is he whoever may not be stumbled in Me.”
EtAni yAni pazyathaH zRNuthazca tAni yOhanaM jnjApayatam|
24 And the messengers of John having gone away, He began to say to the multitudes concerning John: “What have you gone forth into the wilderness to look on? A reed shaken by the wind?
tayO rdUtayO rgatayOH satO ryOhani sa lOkAn vaktumupacakramE, yUyaM madhyEprAntaraM kiM draSTuM niragamata? kiM vAyunA kampitaM naPaM?
25 But what have you gone forth to see? A man clothed in soft garments? Behold, they in splendid clothing, and living in luxury, are in the houses of kings!
yUyaM kiM draSTuM niragamata? kiM sUkSmavastraparidhAyinaM kamapi naraM? kintu yE sUkSmamRduvastrANi paridadhati sUttamAni dravyANi bhunjjatE ca tE rAjadhAnISu tiSThanti|
26 But what have you gone forth to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and much more than a prophet:
tarhi yUyaM kiM draSTuM niragamata? kimEkaM bhaviSyadvAdinaM? tadEva satyaM kintu sa pumAn bhaviSyadvAdinOpi zrESTha ityahaM yuSmAn vadAmi;
27 this is he concerning whom it has been written: Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, who will prepare Your way before You;
pazya svakIyadUtantu tavAgra prESayAmyahaM| gatvA tvadIyamArgantu sa hi pariSkariSyati| yadarthE lipiriyam AstE sa Eva yOhan|
28 for I say to you, there is not a greater prophet, among those born of women, than John the Immerser; but the least in the Kingdom of God is greater than he.”
atO yuSmAnahaM vadAmi striyA garbbhajAtAnAM bhaviSyadvAdinAM madhyE yOhanO majjakAt zrESThaH kOpi nAsti, tatrApi Izvarasya rAjyE yaH sarvvasmAt kSudraH sa yOhanOpi zrESThaH|
29 And all the people having heard, and the tax collectors, declared God righteous, having been immersed with the immersion of John,
aparanjca sarvvE lOkAH karamanjcAyinazca tasya vAkyAni zrutvA yOhanA majjanEna majjitAH paramEzvaraM nirdOSaM mEnirE|
30 but the Pharisees and the lawyers put away the counsel of God for themselves, having not been immersed by him.
kintu phirUzinO vyavasthApakAzca tEna na majjitAH svAn pratIzvarasyOpadEzaM niSphalam akurvvan|
31 And the LORD said, “To what, then, will I liken the men of this generation? And to what are they like?
atha prabhuH kathayAmAsa, idAnIntanajanAn kEnOpamAmi? tE kasya sadRzAH?
32 They are like to children, to those sitting in a marketplace, and calling to one another, and saying, We piped to you, and you did not dance, we mourned to you, and you did not weep!
yE bAlakA vipaNyAm upavizya parasparam AhUya vAkyamidaM vadanti, vayaM yuSmAkaM nikaTE vaMzIravAdiSma, kintu yUyaM nAnarttiSTa, vayaM yuSmAkaM nikaTa arOdiSma, kintu yuyaM na vyalapiSTa, bAlakairEtAdRzaistESAm upamA bhavati|
33 For John the Immerser came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, He has a demon;
yatO yOhan majjaka Agatya pUpaM nAkhAdat drAkSArasanjca nApivat tasmAd yUyaM vadatha, bhUtagrastOyam|
34 the Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, Behold, a man, a glutton, and a wine drinker, a friend of tax collectors and sinners;
tataH paraM mAnavasuta AgatyAkhAdadapivanjca tasmAd yUyaM vadatha, khAdakaH surApazcANPAlapApinAM bandhurEkO janO dRzyatAm|
35 and the wisdom was justified from all her children.”
kintu jnjAninO jnjAnaM nirdOSaM viduH|
36 And a certain one of the Pharisees was asking Him that He might eat with him, and having gone into the house of the Pharisee He reclined,
pazcAdEkaH phirUzI yIzuM bhOjanAya nyamantrayat tataH sa tasya gRhaM gatvA bhOktumupaviSTaH|
37 and behold, a woman in the city, who was a sinner, having known that He reclines in the house of the Pharisee, having provided an alabaster box of ointment,
Etarhi tatphirUzinO gRhE yIzu rbhEktum upAvEkSIt tacchrutvA tannagaravAsinI kApi duSTA nArI pANParaprastarasya sampuTakE sugandhitailam AnIya
38 and having stood behind, beside His feet, weeping, she began to wet His feet with the tears, and with the hairs of her head she was wiping, and was kissing His feet, and was anointing with the ointment.
tasya pazcAt pAdayOH sannidhau tasyau rudatI ca nEtrAmbubhistasya caraNau prakSAlya nijakacairamArkSIt, tatastasya caraNau cumbitvA tEna sugandhitailEna mamarda|
39 And the Pharisee who called Him, having seen, spoke within himself, saying, “This One, if He were a prophet, would have known who and of what kind [is] the woman who touches Him, that she is a sinner.”
tasmAt sa nimantrayitA phirUzI manasA cintayAmAsa, yadyayaM bhaviSyadvAdI bhavEt tarhi EnaM spRzati yA strI sA kA kIdRzI cEti jnjAtuM zaknuyAt yataH sA duSTA|
40 And Jesus answering said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you”; and he says, “Teacher, say on.”
tadA yAzustaM jagAda, hE zimOn tvAM prati mama kinjcid vaktavyamasti; tasmAt sa babhASE, hE gurO tad vadatu|
41 “Two debtors were to a certain creditor; one was owing five hundred denarii, and the other fifty;
EkOttamarNasya dvAvadhamarNAvAstAM, tayOrEkaH panjcazatAni mudrApAdAn aparazca panjcAzat mudrApAdAn dhArayAmAsa|
42 and they not having [with which] to give back, he forgave both; which of them then, do you say, will love him more?”
tadanantaraM tayOH zOdhyAbhAvAt sa uttamarNastayO rRNE cakSamE; tasmAt tayOrdvayOH kastasmin prESyatE bahu? tad brUhi|
43 And Simon answering said, “I suppose that to whom he forgave the more”; and He said to him, “You judged correctly.”
zimOn pratyuvAca, mayA budhyatE yasyAdhikam RNaM cakSamE sa iti; tatO yIzustaM vyAjahAra, tvaM yathArthaM vyacArayaH|
44 And having turned to the woman, He said to Simon, “See this woman? I entered into your house; you did not give water for My feet, but this woman wet My feet with tears, and wiped with the hairs of her head;
atha tAM nArIM prati vyAghuThya zimOnamavOcat, strImimAM pazyasi? tava gRhE mayyAgatE tvaM pAdaprakSAlanArthaM jalaM nAdAH kintu yOSidESA nayanajalai rmama pAdau prakSAlya kEzairamArkSIt|
45 you did not give a kiss to Me, but this woman, from what [time] I came in, did not cease kissing My feet;
tvaM mAM nAcumbIH kintu yOSidESA svIyAgamanAdArabhya madIyapAdau cumbituM na vyaraMsta|
46 you did not anoint My head with oil, but this woman anointed My feet with oil;
tvanjca madIyOttamAggE kinjcidapi tailaM nAmardIH kintu yOSidESA mama caraNau sugandhitailEnAmarddIt|
47 therefore I say to you, her many sins have been forgiven, because she loved much; but to whom is forgiven little, loves little.”
atastvAM vyAharAmi, EtasyA bahu pApamakSamyata tatO bahu prIyatE kintu yasyAlpapApaM kSamyatE sOlpaM prIyatE|
48 And He said to her, “Your sins have been forgiven”;
tataH paraM sa tAM babhASE, tvadIyaM pApamakSamyata|
49 and those dining with Him began to say within themselves, “Who is this, who also forgives sins?”
tadA tEna sArddhaM yE bhOktum upavivizustE parasparaM vaktumArEbhirE, ayaM pApaM kSamatE ka ESaH?
50 And He said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you, be going on to peace.”
kintu sa tAM nArIM jagAda, tava vizvAsastvAM paryyatrAsta tvaM kSEmENa vraja|
