Luke 23
1 And having risen, the whole multitude of them led Him to Pilate,
Καὶ ἀναστὰν ἅπαν τὸ πλῆθος αὐτῶν ἤγαγον αὐτὸν ἐπὶ τὸν Πιλᾶτον.
2 and began to accuse Him, saying, “We found this One perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying Himself to be Christ, a king.”
ἤρξαντο δὲ κατηγορεῖν αὐτοῦ λέγοντες· Τοῦτον εὕραμεν διαστρέφοντα τὸ ἔθνος ⸀ἡμῶνκαὶ κωλύοντα ⸂φόρους Καίσαρι διδόναι ⸀καὶλέγοντα ⸀αὑτὸνχριστὸν βασιλέα εἶναι.
3 And Pilate questioned Him, saying, “You are the King of the Jews?” And He answering him, said, “You say [it].”
ὁ δὲ Πιλᾶτος ⸀ἠρώτησεναὐτὸν λέγων· Σὺ εἶ ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων; ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς αὐτῷ ἔφη· Σὺ λέγεις.
4 And Pilate said to the chief priests and the multitude, “I find no fault in this Man”;
ὁ δὲ Πιλᾶτος εἶπεν πρὸς τοὺς ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ τοὺς ὄχλους· Οὐδὲν εὑρίσκω αἴτιον ἐν τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ τούτῳ.
5 and they were the more urgent, saying, “He stirs up the people, teaching throughout the whole of Judea—having begun from Galilee—to this place.”
οἱ δὲ ἐπίσχυον λέγοντες ὅτι Ἀνασείει τὸν λαὸν διδάσκων καθʼ ὅλης τῆς Ἰουδαίας, ⸀καὶἀρξάμενος ἀπὸ τῆς Γαλιλαίας ἕως ὧδε.
6 And Pilate having heard of Galilee, questioned if the Man is a Galilean,
Πιλᾶτος δὲ ⸀ἀκούσαςἐπηρώτησεν εἰ ὁ ἄνθρωπος Γαλιλαῖός ἐστιν,
7 and having known that He is from the jurisdiction of Herod, he sent Him back to Herod, he also being in Jerusalem in those days.
καὶ ἐπιγνοὺς ὅτι ἐκ τῆς ἐξουσίας Ἡρῴδου ἐστὶν ἀνέπεμψεν αὐτὸν πρὸς Ἡρῴδην, ὄντα καὶ αὐτὸν ἐν Ἱεροσολύμοις ἐν ταύταις ταῖς ἡμέραις.
8 And Herod rejoiced exceedingly having seen Jesus, for he was wishing to see Him for a long [time], because of hearing many things about Him, and he was hoping to see some sign done by Him,
ὁ δὲ Ἡρῴδης ἰδὼν τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἐχάρη λίαν, ἦν γὰρ ⸂ἐξ ἱκανῶν χρόνων θέλων ἰδεῖν αὐτὸν διὰ τὸ ⸀ἀκούεινπερὶ αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἤλπιζέν τι σημεῖον ἰδεῖν ὑπʼ αὐτοῦ γινόμενον.
9 and was questioning Him in many words, and He answered him nothing.
ἐπηρώτα δὲ αὐτὸν ἐν λόγοις ἱκανοῖς· αὐτὸς δὲ οὐδὲν ἀπεκρίνατο αὐτῷ.
10 And the chief priests and the scribes stood vehemently accusing Him,
εἱστήκεισαν δὲ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς εὐτόνως κατηγοροῦντες αὐτοῦ.
11 and Herod with his soldiers having set Him at nothing, and having mocked, having cast radiant apparel around Him, sent Him back to Pilate,
ἐξουθενήσας δὲ αὐτὸν ⸀καὶὁ Ἡρῴδης σὺν τοῖς στρατεύμασιν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐμπαίξας ⸀περιβαλὼνἐσθῆτα λαμπρὰν ἀνέπεμψεν αὐτὸν τῷ Πιλάτῳ.
12 and both Pilate and Herod became friends with one another on that day, for they were previously at enmity between themselves.
ἐγένοντο δὲ φίλοι ὅ τε ⸂Ἡρῴδης καὶ ὁ Πιλᾶτος ἐν αὐτῇ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ μετʼ ἀλλήλων· προϋπῆρχον γὰρ ἐν ἔχθρᾳ ὄντες πρὸς ⸀αὑτούς
13 And Pilate having called together the chief priests, and the rulers, and the people,
Πιλᾶτος δὲ συγκαλεσάμενος τοὺς ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ τοὺς ἄρχοντας καὶ τὸν λαὸν
14 said to them, “You brought this Man to me as perverting the people, and behold, I having examined [Him] before you, found no fault in this Man in those things you bring forward against Him;
εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς· Προσηνέγκατέ μοι τὸν ἄνθρωπον τοῦτον ὡς ἀποστρέφοντα τὸν λαόν, καὶ ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ἐνώπιον ὑμῶν ἀνακρίνας ⸀οὐθὲνεὗρον ἐν τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ τούτῳ αἴτιον ὧν κατηγορεῖτε κατʼ αὐτοῦ.
15 no, neither Herod, for he sent Him back to us, and behold, nothing worthy of death is having been done by Him;
ἀλλʼ οὐδὲ Ἡρῴδης, ⸂ἀνέπεμψεν γὰρ αὐτὸν πρὸς ἡμᾶς· καὶ ἰδοὺ οὐδὲν ἄξιον θανάτου ἐστὶν πεπραγμένον αὐτῷ·
16 having corrected, therefore, I will release Him,”
παιδεύσας οὖν αὐτὸν ⸀ἀπολύσω
17 [[for it was necessary for him to release to them one at every celebration, ]]
18 and they cried out—the whole multitude—saying, “Away with this One, and release Barabbas to us,”
⸀Ἀνέκραγονδὲ παμπληθεὶ λέγοντες· Αἶρε τοῦτον, ἀπόλυσον δὲ ἡμῖν ⸀τὸνΒαραββᾶν·
19 who had been cast into prison, because of a certain sedition made in the city, and murder.
ὅστις ἦν διὰ στάσιν τινὰ γενομένην ἐν τῇ πόλει καὶ φόνον ⸂βληθεὶς ἐν τῇ φυλακῇ.
20 Pilate again then—wishing to release Jesus—called to them,
πάλιν ⸀δὲὁ Πιλᾶτος ⸀προσεφώνησεν, θέλων ἀπολῦσαι τὸν Ἰησοῦν.
21 but they were calling out, saying, “Crucify! Crucify Him!”
οἱ δὲ ἐπεφώνουν λέγοντες· ⸂Σταύρου σταύρου αὐτόν.
22 And he said to them a third time, “Why, what evil did He do? I found no cause of death in Him; having corrected Him, then, I will release [Him].”
ὁ δὲ τρίτον εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς· Τί γὰρ κακὸν ἐποίησεν οὗτος; οὐδὲν αἴτιον θανάτου εὗρον ἐν αὐτῷ· παιδεύσας οὖν αὐτὸν ἀπολύσω.
23 And they were pressing with loud voices asking Him to be crucified, and their voices, and those of the chief priests, were prevailing,
οἱ δὲ ἐπέκειντο φωναῖς μεγάλαις αἰτούμενοι αὐτὸν σταυρωθῆναι, καὶ κατίσχυον αἱ φωναὶ ⸀αὐτῶν
24 and Pilate gave judgment for their request being done,
⸀καὶΠιλᾶτος ἐπέκρινεν γενέσθαι τὸ αἴτημα αὐτῶν·
25 and he released him who because of sedition and murder has been cast into the prison, whom they were asking for, and he gave up Jesus to their will.
ἀπέλυσεν δὲ τὸν διὰ στάσιν καὶ φόνον βεβλημένον ⸀εἰςφυλακὴν ὃν ᾐτοῦντο, τὸν δὲ Ἰησοῦν παρέδωκεν τῷ θελήματι αὐτῶν.
26 And as they led Him away, having taken hold on Simon, a certain Cyrenian, coming from the field, they put the cross on him to carry [it] behind Jesus.
Καὶ ὡς ἀπήγαγον αὐτόν, ἐπιλαβόμενοι ⸂Σίμωνά τινα Κυρηναῖον ἐρχόμενον ἀπʼ ἀγροῦ ἐπέθηκαν αὐτῷ τὸν σταυρὸν φέρειν ὄπισθεν τοῦ Ἰησοῦ.
27 And a great multitude of the people were following Him, and of women, who also were beating themselves and lamenting Him,
Ἠκολούθει δὲ αὐτῷ πολὺ πλῆθος τοῦ λαοῦ καὶ γυναικῶν ⸀αἳἐκόπτοντο καὶ ἐθρήνουν αὐτόν.
28 and Jesus having turned to them, said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children;
στραφεὶς δὲ πρὸς αὐτὰς ⸀ὁἸησοῦς εἶπεν· Θυγατέρες Ἰερουσαλήμ, μὴ κλαίετε ἐπʼ ἐμέ· πλὴν ἐφʼ ἑαυτὰς κλαίετε καὶ ἐπὶ τὰ τέκνα ὑμῶν,
29 for behold, days come in which they will say, Blessed the barren, and wombs that did not bear, and breasts that did not give suck;
ὅτι ἰδοὺ ἔρχονται ἡμέραι ἐν αἷς ἐροῦσιν Μακάριαι αἱστεῖραι καὶ ⸀αἱ κοιλίαι αἳ οὐκ ἐγέννησαν καὶ μαστοὶ οἳ οὐκ ⸀ἔθρεψαν
30 then they will begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us, and to the hills, Cover us;
τότε ἄρξονται λέγειν τοῖς ὄρεσιν· Πέσετε ἐφʼ ἡμᾶς, καὶ τοῖς βουνοῖς· Καλύψατε ἡμᾶς·
31 for if they do these things in the green tree, what may happen in the dry?”
ὅτι εἰ ἐν ⸀τῷὑγρῷ ξύλῳ ταῦτα ποιοῦσιν, ἐν τῷ ξηρῷ τί γένηται;
32 And there were also others—two evildoers—with Him, to be put to death;
Ἤγοντο δὲ καὶ ἕτεροι ⸂κακοῦργοι δύο σὺν αὐτῷ ἀναιρεθῆναι.
33 and when they came to the place that is called “[Place] of [the] Skull,” there they crucified Him and the evildoers, one on the right hand and one on the left.
καὶ ὅτε ⸀ἦλθονἐπὶ τὸν τόπον τὸν καλούμενον Κρανίον, ἐκεῖ ἐσταύρωσαν αὐτὸν καὶ τοὺς κακούργους, ὃν μὲν ἐκ δεξιῶν ὃν δὲ ἐξ ἀριστερῶν.
34 And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they have not known what they do”; and parting His garments they cast a lot.
⸂ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἔλεγεν· Πάτερ, ἄφες αὐτοῖς, οὐ γὰρ οἴδασιν τί ποιοῦσιν⸃ διαμεριζόμενοι δὲ τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ ἔβαλον ⸀κλήρους
35 And the people were standing, looking on, and the rulers were also sneering with them, saying, “He saved others, let Him save Himself, if this be the Christ, the Chosen One of God.”
καὶ εἱστήκει ὁ λαὸς θεωρῶν. ἐξεμυκτήριζον δὲ καὶ οἱ ⸀ἄρχοντεςλέγοντες· Ἄλλους ἔσωσεν, σωσάτω ἑαυτόν, εἰ οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ χριστὸς ⸂τοῦ θεοῦ, ὁ⸃ ἐκλεκτός.
36 And the soldiers were also mocking Him, coming near and offering vinegar to Him,
⸀ἐνέπαιξανδὲ αὐτῷ καὶ οἱ στρατιῶται προσερχόμενοι, ⸀ὄξοςπροσφέροντες αὐτῷ
37 and saying, “If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself.”
καὶ λέγοντες· Εἰ σὺ εἶ ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων, σῶσον σεαυτόν.
38 And there was also an inscription written over Him [[in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew]]: “THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.”
ἦν δὲ καὶ ⸀ἐπιγραφὴἐπʼ ⸀αὐτῷ Ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων ⸀οὗτος
39 And one of the evildoers who were hanged was slandering Him, saying, “If You are the Christ, save Yourself and us.”
Εἷς δὲ τῶν κρεμασθέντων κακούργων ἐβλασφήμει αὐτόν ⸀λέγων ⸀Οὐχὶσὺ εἶ ὁ χριστός; σῶσον σεαυτὸν καὶ ἡμᾶς.
40 And the other answering, was rebuking him, saying, “Do you not even fear God, that you are in the same judgment?
ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ ἕτερος ⸂ἐπιτιμῶν αὐτῷ ἔφη· Οὐδὲ φοβῇ σὺ τὸν θεόν, ὅτι ἐν τῷ αὐτῷ κρίματι εἶ;
41 And we indeed justly, for we are receiving back [things] worthy of what we did, but this One did nothing out of place”;
καὶ ἡμεῖς μὲν δικαίως, ἄξια γὰρ ὧν ἐπράξαμεν ἀπολαμβάνομεν· οὗτος δὲ οὐδὲν ἄτοπον ἔπραξεν.
42 and he said to Jesus, “Remember me, Lord, when You may come in Your kingdom”;
καὶ ⸀ἔλεγεν Ἰησοῦ, μνήσθητί ⸀μουὅταν ἔλθῃς ⸂ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ σου.
43 and Jesus said to him, “Truly I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.”
καὶ εἶπεν ⸀αὐτῷ Ἀμήν ⸂σοι λέγω σήμερον μετʼ ἐμοῦ ἔσῃ ἐν τῷ παραδείσῳ.
44 And it was, as it were, the sixth hour, and darkness came over all the land until the ninth hour,
⸂Καὶ ἦν ⸀ἤδηὡσεὶ ὥρα ἕκτη καὶ σκότος ἐγένετο ἐφʼ ὅλην τὴν γῆν ἕως ὥρας ἐνάτης
45 and the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn in the middle,
⸂τοῦ ἡλίου ἐκλιπόντος, ἐσχίσθη ⸀δὲτὸ καταπέτασμα τοῦ ναοῦ μέσον.
46 and having cried with a loud voice, Jesus said, “Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit”; now having said this, He breathed His last.
καὶ φωνήσας φωνῇ μεγάλῃ ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν· Πάτερ, εἰς χεῖράς σου ⸀παρατίθεμαιτὸ πνεῦμά μου. ⸂τοῦτο δὲ εἰπὼν ἐξέπνευσεν.
47 And the centurion having seen what was done, glorified God, saying, “Truly this Man was righteous”;
Ἰδὼν δὲ ὁ ἑκατοντάρχης τὸ γενόμενον ⸀ἐδόξαζεντὸν θεὸν λέγων· Ὄντως ὁ ἄνθρωπος οὗτος δίκαιος ἦν.
48 and all the multitudes having come together to this sight, beholding the things that came to pass, turned back striking their breasts;
καὶ πάντες οἱ συμπαραγενόμενοι ὄχλοι ἐπὶ τὴν θεωρίαν ταύτην, ⸀θεωρήσαντεςτὰ γενόμενα, ⸀τύπτοντεςτὰ στήθη ὑπέστρεφον.
49 and all His acquaintances stood far off, and women who followed Him from Galilee, beholding these things.
εἱστήκεισαν δὲ πάντες οἱ γνωστοὶ ⸀αὐτῷ⸀μακρόθεν καὶ γυναῖκες αἱ ⸀συνακολουθοῦσαιαὐτῷ ἀπὸ τῆς Γαλιλαίας, ὁρῶσαι ταῦτα.
50 And behold, a man, by name Joseph, being a counselor, a man good and righteous,
Καὶ ἰδοὺ ἀνὴρὀνόματι Ἰωσὴφ βουλευτὴς ὑπάρχων, ⸀ἀνὴρ ἀγαθὸς καὶ δίκαιος—
51 from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, who also himself was expecting the Kingdom of God, he was not consenting to their counsel and deed,
οὗτος οὐκ ἦν συγκατατεθειμένος τῇ βουλῇ καὶ τῇ πράξει αὐτῶν— ἀπὸ Ἁριμαθαίας πόλεως τῶν Ἰουδαίων, ὃς ⸀προσεδέχετοτὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ θεοῦ,
52 he having gone near to Pilate, asked for the body of Jesus,
οὗτος προσελθὼν τῷ Πιλάτῳ ᾐτήσατο τὸ σῶμα τοῦ Ἰησοῦ,
53 and having taken it down, he wrapped it in fine linen, and placed it in a hewn out tomb, where no one was yet laid.
καὶ ⸀καθελὼνἐνετύλιξεν αὐτὸ σινδόνι, καὶ ἔθηκεν ⸀αὐτὸνἐν μνήματι λαξευτῷ οὗ οὐκ ἦν ⸂οὐδεὶς οὔπω κείμενος.
54 And it was [the] Day of Preparation, and Sabbath was approaching,
καὶ ἡμέρα ἦν ⸂παρασκευῆς, καὶ⸃ σάββατον ἐπέφωσκεν.
55 and the women who also have come with Him out of Galilee having followed after, beheld the tomb, and how His body was placed,
κατακολουθήσασαι δὲ ⸀αἱγυναῖκες, αἵτινες ἦσαν συνεληλυθυῖαι ⸂ἐκ τῆς Γαλιλαίας αὐτῷ, ἐθεάσαντο τὸ μνημεῖον καὶ ὡς ἐτέθη τὸ σῶμα αὐτοῦ,
56 and having turned back, they made ready spices and ointments, and on the Sabbath, indeed, they rested, according to the command.
ὑποστρέψασαι δὲ ἡτοίμασαν ἀρώματα καὶ μύρα. Καὶ τὸ μὲν σάββατον ἡσύχασαν κατὰ τὴν ἐντολήν,
