Lamentations 4

1 [ALEPH-BET] How the gold has become dim, Changed the best—the pure gold! Stones of the sanctuary are poured out At the head of all out-places.

सोना खोटा कैसे हो गया, सोने में खोट कैसे! हर एक गली के मोड़ पर पवित्र पत्थर बिखरे पड़े हैं.

2 The precious sons of Zion, Who are comparable with fine gold, How they have been reckoned earthen bottles, Work of the hands of a potter.

ज़ियोन के वे उत्कृष्ट पुत्र, जिनका मूल्य उत्कृष्ट स्वर्ण के तुल्य है, अब मिट्टी के पात्रों-सदृश कुम्हार की हस्तकृति माने जा रहे हैं!

3 Even dragons have drawn out the breast, They have suckled their young ones, The daughter of my people has become cruel, Like the ostriches in a wilderness.

सियार अपने बच्चों को स्तनपान कराती है, किंतु मेरी प्रजा की पुत्री क्रूर हो चुकी है, मरुभूमि के शुतुरमुर्गों के सदृश.

4 The tongue of a suckling has cleaved to his palate with thirst, Infants asked for bread, they have no dealer [of it] out.

अतिशय तृष्णा के कारण दूधमुंहे शिशु की जीभ उसके तालू से चिपक गई है; बालक भोजन की याचना करते हैं, किंतु कोई भी भोजन नहीं दे रहा.

5 Those eating of delicacies have been desolate in out-places, Those supported on scarlet have embraced dunghills.

जिनका आहार उत्कृष्ट भोजन हुआ करता था, आज गलियों में नष्ट हुए जा रहे हैं. जिनके परिधान बैंगनी वस्त्र हुआ करते थे, आज भस्म में बैठे हुए हैं.

6 And greater is the iniquity of the daughter of my people, Than the sin of Sodom, That was overturned as [in] a moment, And no hands were stayed on her.

मेरी प्रजा की पुत्री पर पड़ा अधर्म सोदोम के दंड से कहीं अधिक प्रचंड है, किसी ने हाथ तक नहीं लगाया और देखते ही देखते उसका सर्वनाश हो गया.

7 Purer were her Nazarites than snow, Whiter than milk, ruddier of body than rubies, Of sapphire their form.

उस नगरी के शासक तो हिम से अधिक विशुद्ध, दुग्ध से अधिक श्वेत थे, उनकी देह मूंगे से अधिक गुलाबी, उनकी देह रचना नीलम के सौंदर्य से भी अधिक उत्कृष्ट थी.

8 Their face has been darker than blackness, They have not been known in out-places, Their skin has cleaved to their bone, It has withered—it has been as wood.

अब उन्हीं के मुखमंडल श्यामवर्ण रह गए हैं; मार्ग चलते हुए उन्हें पहचानना संभव नहीं रहा. उनकी त्वचा सिकुड़ कर अस्थियों से चिपक गई है; वह काठ-सदृश शुष्क हो चुकी है.

9 Better have been the pierced of a sword Than the pierced of famine, For these flow away, pierced through, Without the increase of the field.

वे ही श्रेष्ठतर कहे जाएंगे, जिनकी मृत्यु तलवार प्रहार से हुई थी, उनकी अपेक्षा, जिनकी मृत्यु भूख से हुई; जो घुल-घुल कर कूच कर गए क्योंकि खेत में उपज न हो सकी थी.

10 The hands of merciful women have boiled their own children, They have been for food to them, In the destruction of the daughter of my people.

ये उन करुणामयी माताओं के ही हाथ थे, जिन्होंने अपनी ही संतान को अपना आहार बना लिया, जब मेरी प्रजा की पुत्री विनाश के काल में थी ये बालक उनका आहार बनाए गए थे.

11 YHWH has completed His fury, He has poured out the fierceness of His anger, And He kindles a fire in Zion, And it devours her foundations.

याहवेह ने अपने कोप का प्रवाह पूर्णतः निर्बाध छोड़ दिया. उन्होंने अपना भड़का कोप उंडेल दिया और फिर उन्होंने ज़ियोन में ऐसी अग्नि प्रज्वलित कर दी, जिसने इसकी नीवों को ही भस्म कर दिया.

12 The kings of earth did not believe, And any of the inhabitants of the world, That an adversary and enemy would come Into the gates of Jerusalem.

न तो संसार के राजाओं को, और न ही पृथ्वी के निवासियों को इसका विश्वास हुआ, कि विरोधी एवं शत्रु येरूशलेम के प्रवेश द्वारों से प्रवेश पा सकेगा.

13 Because of the sins of her prophets, The iniquities of her priests, Who are shedding in her midst the blood of the righteous,

इसका कारण था उसके भविष्यवक्ताओं के पाप तथा उसके पुरोहितों की पापिष्ठता, जिन्होंने नगर के मध्य ही धर्मियों का रक्तपात किया था.

14 They have wandered naked in out-places, They have been defiled with blood, Without [any] being able to touch their clothing,

अब वे नगर की गलियों में दृष्टिहीनों-सदृश भटक रहे हैं; वे रक्त से ऐसे दूषित हो चुके हैं कि कोई भी उनके वस्त्रों को स्पर्श करने का साहस नहीं कर पा रहा.

15 “Turn aside—unclean,” they called to them, “Turn aside, turn aside, do not touch,” For they fled—indeed, they have wandered, They have said among nations: “They do not add to sojourn.”

उन्हें देख लोग चिल्ला उठते है, “दूर, दूर अशुद्ध! दूर, दूर! मत छूना उसे!” अब वे छिपते, भागते भटक रहे हैं, राष्ट्रों में सभी यही कहते फिरते हैं, “अब वे हमारे मध्य में निवास नहीं कर सकते.”

16 The face of YHWH has divided them, He does not add to behold them, They have not lifted up the face of priests, They have not favored [the] old and elderly.

उन्हें तो याहवेह ने ही इस तरह बिखरा दिया है; अब वे याहवेह के कृपापात्र नहीं रह गए. न तो पुरोहित ही सम्मान्य रह गए हैं, और न ही पूर्वज किसी कृपा के योग्य.

17 While we exist—consumed are our eyes for our vain help, In our watchtower we have watched for a nation [that] does not save.

हमारे नेत्र दृष्टिहीन हो गए, सहायता की आशा व्यर्थ सिद्ध हुई; हमने उस राष्ट्र से सहायता की आशा की थी, जिसमें हमारी सहायता की क्षमता ही न थी.

18 They have hunted our steps from going in our broad-places, Near has been our end, fulfilled our days, For our end has come.

उन्होंने इस रीति से हमारा पीछा करना प्रारंभ कर दिया, कि मार्ग पर हमारा आना-जाना दूभर हो गया; हमारी मृत्यु निकट आती गई, हमारा जीवनकाल सिमटता चला गया, वस्तुतः हमारा जीवन समाप्‍त ही हो गया था.

19 Swifter have been our pursuers, Than the eagles of the heavens, On the mountains they have burned [after] us, In the wilderness they have laid wait for us.

वे, जो हमारा पीछा कर रहे थे, उनकी गति आकाशगामी गरुड़ों से भी द्रुत थी; उन्होंने पर्वतों तक हमारा पीछा किया और निर्जन प्रदेश में वे हमारी घात में रहे.

20 The breath of our nostrils—the anointed of YHWH, Has been captured in their pits, of whom we said: “We live among nations in his shadow.”

याहवेह द्वारा अभिषिक्त, हमारे जीवन की सांस उनके फन्दों में जा फंसे. हमारा विचार तो यह रहा था, कि उनकी छत्रछाया में हम राष्ट्रों के मध्य निवास करते रहेंगे.

21 Rejoice and be glad, O daughter of Edom, Dwelling in the land of Uz, Even to you a cup passes over, You are drunk, and make yourself naked.

एदोम की पुत्री, तुम, जो उज़ देश में निवास करती हो, हर्षोल्लास में मगन हो जाओ. प्याला तुम तक भी पहुंचेगा; तुम मदोन्मत्त होकर पूर्णतः निर्वस्त्र हो जाओगी.

22 Completed [is] your iniquity, daughter of Zion, He does not add to remove you, He has inspected your iniquity, O daughter of Edom, He has removed [you] because of your sins!

ज़ियोन की पुत्री, निष्पन्‍न हो गया तुम्हारी पापिष्ठता का दंड; अब वह तुम्हें निर्वासन में रहने न देंगे. किंतु एदोम की पुत्री, वह तुम्हारी पापिष्ठता को दंडित करेंगे, वह तुम्हारे पाप प्रकट कर सार्वजनिक कर देंगे.
