Judges 4
1 And the sons of Israel add to do evil in the eyes of YHWH when Ehud is dead,
Toen Ehoed gestorven was, deden de Israëlieten opnieuw kwaad in de ogen van Jahweh.
2 and YHWH sells them into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan, who has reigned in Hazor, and Sisera [is] the head of his host, and he is dwelling in Harosheth of the nations;
Daarom gaf Jahweh ze prijs aan den kanaänietischen koning Jabin, die te Chasor regeerde. Sisera was zijn legeroverste, en woonde in Charósjet-Haggojim.
3 and the sons of Israel cry to YHWH, for he has nine hundred chariots of iron, and he has oppressed the sons of Israel mightily [for] twenty years.
Eindelijk riepen de Israëlieten tot Jahweh; want daar hij negenhonderd ijzeren strijdwagens bezat, had hij hen twintig jaar lang zwaar verdrukt.
4 And Deborah, a woman, a prophetess, wife of Lapidoth, she is judging Israel at that time,
In die tijd sprak Debora, een profetes, en vrouw van Lappidot, recht over Israël.
5 and she is dwelling under the palm-tree of Deborah, between Ramah and Beth-El, in the hill-country of Ephraim, and the sons of Israel go up to her for judgment.
Ze hield zitting onder de Deborapalm tussen Rama en Betel in het bergland van Efraïm, en de Israëlieten gingen naar haar, als ze een rechtszaak hadden.
6 And she sends and calls for Barak son of Abinoam, out of Kedesh-Naphtali, and says to him, “Has YHWH, God of Israel, not commanded? Go, and you have drawn toward Mount Tabor, and have taken with you ten thousand men, out of the sons of Naphtali, and out of the sons of Zebulun,
Deze nu liet Barak, den zoon van Abinóam, uit Kédesj in Neftali ontbieden, en sprak tot hem: Jahweh, de God van Israël, beveelt: Ruk met tien duizend man van de Neftalieten en Zabulonieten naar de berg Tabor op.
7 and I have drawn to you, to the Brook of Kishon, Sisera, head of the host of Jabin, and his chariot, and his multitude, and have given him into your hand.”
Ik zal Sisera, Jabins legeroverste, met zijn wagens en drommen bij de beek Kisjon tot u voeren, en in uw hand leveren.
8 And Barak says to her, “If you go with me, then I have gone; and if you do not go with me, I do not go”;
Barak zeide tot haar: Ik zal gaan, als gij met me meegaat; zo ge mij niet vergezelt, ga ik niet.
9 and she says, “I certainly go with you; only, surely your glory is not on the way which you are going, for YHWH sells Sisera into the hand of a woman”; and Deborah rises and goes with Barak to Kedesh.
Hierop antwoordde ze: Ik zal met u meegaan. Maar nu wacht u geen roem op uw weg; want aan een vrouw zal Jahweh Sisera overleveren. Toen stond Debora op, en ging met Barak naar Kédesj.
10 And Barak calls Zebulun and Naphtali to Kedesh, and he goes up—ten thousand men [are] at his feet—and Deborah goes up with him.
Nu riep Barak Zabulon en Neftali op naar Kédesj, en tien duizend man trokken achter hem aan. Ook Debora ging met hem mee.
11 And Heber the Kenite has been separated from the Kenite, from the sons of Hobab father-in-law of Moses, and he stretches out his tent to the oak in Zaanaim, which [is] by Kedesh.
Chéber, de Keniet, die zich had afgescheiden van Kájin, een der nakomelingen van Chobab, Moses’ schoonvader, had toen zijn tenten opgeslagen bij de eik van Saänannim, in de buurt van Kédesj.
12 And they declare to Sisera that Barak son of Abinoam has gone up to Mount Tabor,
Zodra men Sisera berichtte, dat Barak, de zoon van Abinóam, naar de berg Tabor was opgerukt,
13 and Sisera calls all his chariots, nine hundred chariots of iron, and all the people who [are] with him, from Harosheth of the nations, to the Brook of Kishon.
riep hij heel zijn ruiterij, met de negenhonderd ijzeren wagens, en al zijn voetvolk uit Charósjet-Haggojim bij de beek Kisjon samen.
14 And Deborah says to Barak, “Rise, for this [is] the day in which YHWH has given Sisera into your hand; has YHWH not gone out before you?” And Barak goes down from Mount Tabor, and ten thousand men after him.
Toen sprak Debora tot Barak: Trek op; want dit is de dag, waarop Jahweh Sisera in uw handen zal leveren; waarachtig, Jahweh gaat voor u uit! Terwijl Barak nu aan de spits van zijn tien duizend man van de berg Tabor afkwam,
15 And YHWH destroys Sisera, and all the chariots, and all the camp, by the mouth of the sword, before Barak, and Sisera comes down from off the chariot, and flees on his feet.
bracht Jahweh Sisera met al zijn wagens en heel zijn leger voor de ogen van Barak in verwarring. Sisera sprong van zijn wagen en vluchtte te voet;
16 And Barak has pursued after the chariots and after the camp, to Harosheth of the nations, and all the camp of Sisera falls by the mouth of the sword—there has not been left even one.
en Barak achtervolgde de ruiterij en heel het leger tot Charósjet-Haggojim. Heel Sisera’s strijdmacht viel door het zwaard, en niet één bleef er over.
17 And Sisera has fled on his feet to the tent of Jael wife of Heber the Kenite, for [there is] peace between Jabin king of Hazor and the house of Heber the Kenite;
Sisera was intussen te voet naar de tent van Jaël, de vrouw van den Keniet Chéber, gevlucht; want er heerste vrede tussen Jabin, den koning van Chasor, en het huis van Chéber, den Keniet.
18 and Jael goes out to meet Sisera and says to him, “Turn aside, my lord, turn aside to me, do not fear”; and he turns aside to her, into the tent, and she covers him with a mantle.
Jaël kwam naar buiten, Sisera tegemoet, en zeide tot hem: Kom binnen, heer; kom bij mij binnen, vrees niet. Hij ging bij haar de tent binnen, waar ze hem met een kleed bedekte.
19 And he says to her, “Please give me a little water to drink, for I am thirsty”; and she opens the bottle of milk, and gives him to drink, and covers him.
Toen vroeg hij haar: Geef me een beetje water te drinken; want ik heb dorst. Ze maakte de melkzak los, gaf hem te drinken, en bedekte hem weer.
20 And he says to her, “Stand at the opening of the tent, and it has been, if any comes in, and has asked you and said, Is there a man here? That you have said, There is not.”
Nu zei hij tot haar: Ga bij de tentopening staan, en als er iemand aankomt en u vraagt, of hier iemand is, antwoord dan: Neen.
21 And Jael wife of Heber takes the pin of the tent, and takes the hammer in her hand, and goes to him gently, and strikes the pin into his temples, and it fastens in the earth—and he has been fast asleep, and is weary—and he dies.
Maar Jaël, Chébers vrouw, greep een tentpin, nam de hamer in haar hand, liep zachtjes op hem toe, en sloeg, terwijl hij vast sliep, de pin door zijn slaap, zodat ze in de grond drong; hij zonk ineen, en stierf.
22 And behold, Barak is pursuing Sisera, and Jael comes out to meet him, and says to him, “Come, and I show you the man whom you are seeking”; and he comes to her, and behold, Sisera is fallen—dead, and the pin [is] in his temples.
En zie, daar kwam Barak aan, die Sisera achtervolgde. Jaël ging naar buiten, hem tegemoet, en zei hem: Ga mee, dan zal ik u den man laten zien, dien ge zoekt. Hij ging bij haar binnen; en daar lag Sisera dood, met de pin door zijn slaap.
23 And God humbles Jabin king of Canaan before the sons of Israel on that day,
Zo vernederde God die dag den kanaänietischen koning Jabin voor de Israëlieten.
24 and the hand of the sons of Israel goes, going on and becoming hard on Jabin king of Canaan, until they have cut off Jabin king of Canaan.
En de hand van Israël drukte steeds zwaarder op Jabin, den koning van Kanaän, totdat ze Jabin, den koning van Kanaän, geheel hadden overwonnen.
