Judges 3

1 And these [are] the nations which YHWH left, to try Israel by them, all who have not known all the wars of Canaan;

Voici les nations que le Seigneur laissa, pour instruire par elles Israël et tous ceux qui ne connaissaient pas les guerres des Chananéens;

2 (only for the sake of the generations of the sons of Israel knowing, to teach them war, only those who formerly have not known them)—

Afin que dans la suite leurs enfants apprissent à combattre contre les ennemis, et qu’ils s’accoutumassent à livrer bataille:

3 five princes of the Philistines, and all the Canaanite, and the Zidonian, and the Hivite inhabiting Mount Lebanon, from Mount Ba‘al-Hermon to the entering in of Hamath;

Les cinq satrapes des Philistins, tous les Chananéens, les Sidoniens et les Hévéens qui habitaient sur la mont Liban, depuis la montagne de Baal-Hermon jusqu’à l’entrée d’Emath.

4 and they are to prove Israel by them, to know whether they obey the commands of YHWH that He commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.

Or, il les laissa, afin que par eux il éprouvât Israël, en voyant s’il écouterait les commandements du Seigneur, qu’il avait donnés à leurs pères par l’entremise de Moïse, ou non.

5 And the sons of Israel have dwelt in the midst of the Canaanite, the Hittite, and the Amorite, and the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite,

C’est pourquoi les enfants d’Israël habitèrent au milieu du Chananéen, de l’Héthéen, de l’Amorrhéen, du Phérézéen, de l’Hévéen et du Jébuséen;

6 and take their daughters to them for wives, and have given their daughters to their sons, and they serve their gods;

Ils prirent pour femmes, leurs filles, et ils donnèrent eux-mêmes leurs propres filles à leurs fils, et ils servirent leurs dieux.

7 and the sons of Israel do evil in the eyes of YHWH, and forget their God YHWH, and serve the Ba‘alim and the Asheroth.

Ainsi, ils firent le mal en la présence du Seigneur, et ils oublièrent leur Dieu, servant les Baalim et les Astaroth.

8 And the anger of YHWH burns against Israel, and He sells them into the hand of Chushan-Rishathaim king of Aram-Naharaim, and the sons of Israel serve Chushan-Rishathaim eight years;

Or, irrité contre Israël, le Seigneur les livra aux mains de Chusan Rasathaïm, roi de Mésopotamie, et ils le servirent pendant huit ans.

9 and the sons of Israel cry to YHWH, and YHWH raises a savior to the sons of Israel, and he saves them—Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother;

Et ils crièrent au Seigneur, qui leur suscita un sauveur qui les délivra, Othoniel, fils de Cénez, frère puîné de Caleb.

10 and the Spirit of YHWH is on him, and he judges Israel, and goes out to battle, and YHWH gives Chushan-Rishathaim king of Aram into his hand, and his hand is strong against Chushan-Rishathaim;

Et l’esprit du Seigneur fut en lui, et il jugea Israël. Il s’en alla au combat, et le Seigneur livra en ses mains Chusan Rasathaïm, roi de Syrie, et il le subjugua.

11 and the land rests forty years. And Othniel son of Kenaz dies,

Et le pays se reposa durant quarante ans, et Othoniel, fils de Cénez, mourut.

12 and the sons of Israel add to do evil in the eyes of YHWH; and YHWH strengthens Eglon king of Moab against Israel, because that they have done evil in the eyes of YHWH;

Mais les enfants d’Israël recommencèrent à faire le mal en la présence du Seigneur, qui fortifia contre eux Eglon, roi de Moab, parce qu’ils firent le mal en sa présence.

13 and he gathers the sons of Ammon and Amalek to himself, and goes and strikes Israel, and they possess the city of palms;

Et il joignit à lui les enfants d’Ammon et d’Amalec; et il alla et battit Israël, et il se rendit maître de la ville des Palmes.

14 and the sons of Israel serve Eglon king of Moab eighteen years.

Et les enfants d’Israël servirent Eglon, roi de Moab, pendant dix-huit ans;

15 And the sons of Israel cry to YHWH, and YHWH raises a savior to them, Ehud son of Gera, a Benjamite (a man [with] his right hand bound), and the sons of Israel send a present by his hand to Eglon king of Moab;

Et après cela ils crièrent au Seigneur, qui leur suscita un sauveur du nom d’Aod, fils de Géra, fils de Jémini, qui se servait des deux mains comme de la droite. Or, les enfants d’Israël envoyèrent par lui des présents à Eglon, roi de Moab.

16 and Ehud makes a sword for himself, and it has two mouths (its length [is] a cubit), and he girds it under his long robe on his right thigh;

Aod se fit un glaive à deux tranchants, qui avait au milieu une garde de la longueur de la paume de la main, et il le ceignit sous son sayon, sur la cuisse droite.

17 and he brings the present near to Eglon king of Moab, and Eglon [is] a very fat man.

Et il offrit les présents à Eglon, roi de Moab. Or, Eglon était extrêmement gros.

18 And it comes to pass, when he has finished to bring the present near, that he sends the people carrying the present away,

Lors donc qu’il lui eut offert les présents, il suivit ses compagnons qui étaient venus avec lui.

19 and he himself has turned back from the carved images which [are] at Gilgal and says, “I have a secret word for you, O king”; and he says, “Hush!” And all those standing by him go out from him.

Puis, revenu de Galgala, où étaient les idoles, il dit au roi: J’ai une parole secrète pour vous, ô roi. Et le roi commanda le silence, et tous ceux qui étaient autour de lui étant sortis,

20 And Ehud has come to him, and he is sitting in the cool upper chamber which he has for himself, and Ehud says, “I have a word of God for you”; and he rises from off the throne;

Aod s’approcha de lui: or, il était assis dans sa chambre d’été, seul; Aod lui dit donc: J’ai une parole de Dieu pour vous. Le roi aussitôt se leva de son trône.

21 and Ehud puts forth his left hand, and takes the sword from off his right thigh, and thrusts it into his belly;

Et Aod étendit la main gauche, et prit le glaive de dessus sa cuisse droite, et l’enfonça dans son ventre,

22 and the hilt also goes in after the blade, and the fat shuts on the blade, that he has not drawn the sword out of his belly, and he goes out [through] the antechamber [[or and the dung came out]].

Si fortement, que la poignée suivit le fer dans la blessure, et s’y trouva très resserrée par la graisse extrêmement épaisse. Il ne retira donc point le glaive, mais il le laissa dans le corps, comme il était, lorsqu’il eut porté le coup: et aussitôt les excréments renfermés dans le ventre s’échappèrent par les conduits naturels.

23 And Ehud goes out at the porch, and shuts the doors of the upper chamber on him, and has bolted [it];

Or, Aod, ayant fermé avec le plus grand soin les portes de la chambre, et y ayant mis les verrous,

24 and he has gone out, and his servants have come in, and look, and behold, the doors of the upper chamber are bolted, and they say, “He is surely covering his feet, [relieving himself, ] in the cool inner chamber.”

Sortit par le derrière. Cependant les serviteurs du roi étant venus, virent les portes de la chambre fermées, et ils dirent: Peut-être satisfait-il à un besoin dans la chambre d’été.

25 And they stay until confounded, and behold, he is not opening the doors of the upper chamber, and they take the key, and open, and behold, their lord is fallen to the earth—dead.

Et ayant attendu longtemps jusqu’à en être troublés, et voyant que personne n’ouvrait, ils prirent la clef; et ouvrant, ils trouvèrent leur maître étendu sur la terre, mort.

26 And Ehud escaped during their lingering, and has passed by the images, and escapes to Seirath.

Mais Aod, pendant que ceux-ci étaient dans le trouble, s’enfuit et traversa le lieu des idoles, d’où il était revenu. Il vint à Séirath;

27 And it comes to pass, in his coming in, that he blows with a horn in the hill-country of Ephraim, and the sons of Israel go down with him from the hill-country, and he before them;

Et aussitôt il sonna de la trompette sur la montagne d’Ephraïm, et les enfants d’Israël descendirent avec lui, marchant lui-même en tête.

28 and he says to them, “Pursue after me, for YHWH has given your enemies, the Moabites, into your hand”; and they go down after him, and capture the passages of the Jordan toward Moab, and have not permitted a man to pass over.

Il leur dit: Suivez-moi; car le Seigneur a livré nos ennemis, les Moabites, en nos mains. Et ils descendirent après lui, et ils occupèrent les gués du Jourdain, par lesquels on va à Moab; et ils ne laissèrent passer personne.

29 And they strike Moab at that time, about ten thousand men, all robust, and everyone a man of valor, and no man has escaped,

Mais ils tuèrent en ce temps-là environ dix mille Moabites, tous hommes forts et vaillants; nul d’entre eux ne put échapper.

30 and Moab is humbled in that day under the hand of Israel; and the land rests [for] eighty years.

Ainsi Moab fut humilié en ce jour-là sous la main d’Israël; et le pays se reposa durant quatre-vingts ans.

31 And after him has been Shamgar son of Anath, and he strikes the Philistines—six hundred men—with an ox-goad, and he also saves Israel.

Après Aod il y eut Samgar, fils d’Anath, qui défit six cents hommes d’entre les Philistins avec un soc de charrue et lui aussi défendit Israël.
