Judges 11
1 And Jephthah the Gileadite has been a mighty man of valor, and he [is the] son of a harlot woman; and Gilead begets Jephthah,
Bấy giờ có Giép-thê, người Ga-la-át, nổi danh là một dũng sĩ. Cha ông là người Ga-la-át, nhưng mẹ vốn là một kỹ nữ.
2 and the wife of Gilead bears sons to him, and the wife’s sons grow up and cast Jephthah out, and say to him, “You do not inherit in the house of our father; for you [are the] son of another woman.”
Vợ của Ga-la-át cũng sinh được nhiều con trai; và khi những người này lớn lên, liền đuổi Giép-thê đi. Họ nói: “Mày không được chia tài sản của cha để lại, vì mày là con khác mẹ.”
3 And Jephthah flees from the face of his brothers, and dwells in the land of Tob; and vain men gather themselves together to Jephthah, and they go out with him.
Vì vậy, Giép-thê phải lánh xa anh em, đến ở trong đất Tóp. Một số du đãng kết hợp lại, theo ông.
4 And it comes to pass, after a time, that the sons of Ammon fight with Israel,
Vào lúc ấy, người Am-môn bắt đầu chống nghịch người Ít-ra-ên.
5 and it comes to pass, when the sons of Ammon have fought with Israel, that [the] elderly of Gilead go to take Jephthah from the land of Tob;
Khi người Am-môn tấn công, các trưởng lão xứ Ga-la-át đến Tóp để mời Giép-thê về.
6 and they say to Jephthah, “Come, and you have been for a captain to us, and we fight against the sons of Ammon.”
Các trưởng lão đề nghị: “Xin hãy làm thủ lãnh chúng tôi. Xin giúp chúng tôi chống lại người Am-môn!”
7 And Jephthah says to [the] elderly of Gilead, “Have you not hated me? And you cast me out from the house of my father, and why have you come to me now when you are in distress?”
Nhưng Giép-thê nói với họ: “Các anh không phải là người ghét tôi, rồi đuổi tôi ra khỏi nhà cha tôi sao? Nay gặp khó khăn, còn tìm tôi làm gì?”
8 And [the] elderly of Gilead say to Jephthah, “Therefore, now, we have turned back to you; and you have gone with us, and have fought against the sons of Ammon, and you have been for head to us—to all the inhabitants of Gilead.”
Các trưởng lão đáp: “Chính vì thế chúng tôi mới đến với anh. Nếu anh lãnh đạo chúng tôi trong cuộc chiến cống quân Am-môn, chúng tôi sẽ tôn anh lên cai trị người Ga-la-át.”
9 And Jephthah says to [the] elderly of Gilead, “If you are taking me back to fight against the sons of Ammon, and YHWH has given them before me—am I for a head to you?”
Giép-thê hỏi lại các trưởng lão: “Tôi xin hỏi thẳng. Nếu tôi về với các anh và nếu Chúa Hằng Hữu cho tôi đánh thắng quân Am-môn, có phải các anh sẽ tôn tôi lên cai trị toàn dân phải không?”
10 And [the] elderly of Gilead say to Jephthah, “YHWH is listening between us—if we do not do so according to your word.”
Các trưởng lão đáp: “Có Chúa Hằng Hữu chứng giám. Chúng tôi xin giữ đúng lời anh vừa nói.”
11 And Jephthah goes with [the] elderly of Gilead, and the people set him over them for head and for captain, and Jephthah speaks all his words before YHWH in Mizpeh.
Vậy Giép-thê cùng đi với các trưởng lão Ga-la-át, và dân chúng đưa ông lên cai trị họ và làm tướng chỉ huy quân đội. Tại Mích-pa, Giép-thê lặp lại những lời ông giao kết với các trưởng lão Ga-la-át trước mặt Chúa Hằng Hữu.
12 And Jephthah sends messengers to the king of the sons of Ammon, saying, “What [is this] to me and to you, that you have come to me, to fight in my land?”
Giép-thê sai sứ giả đi chất vấn vua Am-môn: “Tại sao vua đem quân tấn công đất nước tôi?”
13 And the king of the sons of Ammon says to the messengers of Jephthah, “Because Israel took my land in his coming up out of Egypt, from Arnon, and to the Jabbok, and to the Jordan; and now, restore them in peace.”
Vua Am-môn trả lời sứ giả của Giép-thê: “Khi Ít-ra-ên ra khỏi Ai Cập, họ đã chiếm đất của ta từ Sông Ạt-nôn đến Sông Gia-bốc và Giô-đan. Bây giờ hãy trả đất lại cho chúng tôi trong tinh thần hòa hiếu.”
14 And Jephthah adds yet and sends messengers to the king of the sons of Ammon,
Giép-thê lại sai sứ giả nói với vua Am-môn:
15 and says to him, “Thus said Jephthah: Israel did not take the land of Moab, and the land of the sons of Ammon,
“Đây là điều Giép-thê nói: Ít-ra-ên không cướp đất của Mô-áp và Am-môn.
16 for in their coming up out of Egypt, Israel goes in the wilderness to the Red Sea, and comes to Kadesh,
Nhưng, sau khi ra khỏi Ai Cập, người Ít-ra-ên băng hoang mạc, qua Biển Đỏ và đến Ca-đe.
17 and Israel sends messengers to the king of Edom, saying, Please let me pass over through your land, and the king of Edom did not listen; and [Israel] has also sent to the king of Moab, and he has not been willing; and Israel abides in Kadesh,
Tại Ca-đe, Ít-ra-ên sai sứ giả xin vua Ê-đôm cho phép họ đi băng qua đất vua này, nhưng bị từ chối. Họ lại xin vua Mô-áp cũng không được, nên Ít-ra-ên phải ở lại Ca-đe.
18 and he goes through the wilderness, and goes around the land of Edom and the land of Moab, and comes in at the rising of the sun of the land of Moab, and they encamp beyond Arnon, and have not come into the border of Moab, for Arnon [is] the border of Moab.
Về sau, họ đi vòng đất Ê-đôm và Mô-áp, trong hoang mạc, đến cạnh biên giới phía đông đất Mô-áp, bên Sông Ạt-nôn. Nhưng họ không hề băng qua sông Ạt-nôn của Mô-áp, vì Ạt-nôn là biên giới của Mô-áp.
19 And Israel sends messengers to Sihon, king of the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and Israel says to him, Please let us pass over through your land, to my place,
Lúc ấy Ít-ra-ên sai sứ đến Hết-bôn xin Si-hôn, vua A-mô-rít, cho họ đi băng qua đất vua này.
20 and Sihon has not trusted Israel to pass over through his border, and Sihon gathers all his people, and they encamp in Jahaz, and fight with Israel;
Chẳng những không cho, vì không tin Ít-ra-ên, Vua Si-hôn còn thu thập toàn lực tại Gia-xa, đánh Ít-ra-ên.
21 and YHWH, God of Israel, gives Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they strike them, and Israel possesses all the land of the Amorite, the inhabitant of that land,
Nhưng Chúa Hằng Hữu, là Đức Chúa Trời của Ít-ra-ên, đã cho họ thắng Vua Si-hôn. Vậy nên Ít-ra-ên chiếm đất A-mô-rít,
22 and they possess all the border of the Amorite from Arnon, and to the Jabbok, and from the wilderness, and to the Jordan.
từ Sông Ạt-nôn đến Sông Gia-bốc, và từ hoang mạc phía đông đến Giô-đan.
23 And now, YHWH, God of Israel, has dispossessed the Amorite from the presence of His people Israel, and you would possess it!
Nếu Chúa Hằng Hữu, Đức Chúa Trời của Ít-ra-ên, lấy đất của người A-mô-rít cho Ít-ra-ên, thì vua có quyền gì lấy lại?
24 That which your god Chemosh causes you to possess—do you not possess it? And all that which our God YHWH has dispossessed from our presence—we possess it.
Vua có từ chối những gì thần Kê-mốt cho vua không? Cũng thế, chúng tôi nhận tất cả đất Chúa Hằng Hữu cho chúng tôi.
25 And now, [are] you at all better than Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he strive with Israel at all? Did he fight against them at all?
Ngoài ra, vua có hơn gì Ba-lác, con Xếp-bô, vua Mô-áp không? Vua ấy đâu có dám tranh chấp, chiến đấu với Ít-ra-ên?
26 In Israel’s dwelling in Heshbon and in its towns, and in Aroer and in its towns, and in all the cities which [are] by the sides of Arnon [for] three hundred years—and why have you not delivered them in that time?
Hơn nữa, Ít-ra-ên đã định cư trong vùng này suốt 300 năm nay, từ Hết-bôn cho đến A-rô-e và dọc Sông Ạt-nôn. Tại sao đợi đến bây giờ vua mới đòi đất?
27 And I have not sinned against you, and you are doing evil with me—to fight against me. YHWH, the Judge, judges between the sons of Israel and the sons of Ammon today.”
Tóm lại, tôi chẳng có lỗi gì với vua cả. Nhưng vua lại làm điều trái, gây chiến với chúng tôi. Nguyện xin Chúa Hằng Hữu, là Đấng Quan Án, xét xử vụ này giữa Ít-ra-ên và Am-môn.”
28 And the king of the sons of Ammon has not listened to the words of Jephthah which he sent to him,
Nhưng, vua Am-môn không quan tâm đến thông điệp Giép-thê.
29 and the Spirit of YHWH is on Jephthah, and he passes over Gilead and Manasseh, and passes over Mizpeh of Gilead, and he has passed over from Mizpeh of Gilead to the sons of Ammon.
Lúc ấy, Thần của Chúa Hằng Hữu ngự trên Giép-thê, ông kéo quân băng qua đất Ga-la-át và Ma-na-se, vượt thành Mích-pa ở Ga-la-át, và tại đó ông tấn công người Am-môn.
30 And Jephthah vows a vow to YHWH and says, “If You give the sons of Ammon into my hand at all—
Giép-thê khấn nguyện với Chúa Hằng Hữu: “Nếu Chúa cho tôi chiến thắng quân Am-môn,
31 then it has been, that which comes out from the doors of my house at all to meet me in my turning back in peace from the sons of Ammon—it has been for YHWH, or I have offered up a burnt-offering for it.”
thì lúc trở về, tôi sẽ dâng tế lễ thiêu lên Chúa bất kỳ người hay vật nào từ trong nhà ra đón tôi trước tiên.”
32 And Jephthah passes over to the sons of Ammon to fight against them, and YHWH gives them into his hand,
Vậy Giép-thê lãnh đạo quân mình tấn công quân Am-môn, Chúa Hằng Hữu cho ông chiến thắng.
33 and he strikes them from Aroer, and to [where] you are going in to Minnith—twenty cities—and to the meadow of the vineyards, [with] a very great striking; and the sons of Ammon are humbled at the presence of the sons of Israel.
Ông tàn phá hai mươi thành từ A-rô-e đến Mi-nít và cho đến tận A-bên Kê-a-mim. Vậy, Ít-ra-ên đánh bại quân Am-môn.
34 And Jephthah comes into Mizpeh, to his house, and behold, his daughter is coming out to meet him with timbrels, and with choruses, and except her alone, he has no son or daughter.
Khi Giép-thê về nhà ở Mích-pa, con gái ông chạy ra đón, vừa đánh trống con, vừa nhảy múa. Cô là con duy nhất của ông; ông không có con trai hay con gái nào khác.
35 And it comes to pass, when he sees her, that he tears his garments and says, “Aah! My daughter, you have caused me to bend greatly, and you have been among those troubling me; and I have opened my mouth to YHWH, and I am not able to turn back.”
Khi thấy con, ông xé áo mình đang mặc, than thở: “Ôi, con gái ta ơi! Con làm cho cha đau xót vô cùng! Con đặt cha trong tình trạng khó xử quá! Vì cha đã có lời thề nguyện với Chúa Hằng Hữu, cha không thể đổi lại được.”
36 And she says to him, “My father, you have opened your mouth to YHWH, do to me as it has gone out from your mouth, after that YHWH has done vengeance for you on your enemies, on the sons of Ammon.”
Cô nói: “Thưa cha, nếu cha đã thề nguyện với Chúa Hằng Hữu, xin cha làm theo lời hứa nguyện, vì Chúa Hằng Hữu đã cho cha chiến thắng quân Am-môn.
37 And she says to her father, “Let this thing be done to me; desist from me [for] two months, and I go on, and have gone down on the hills, and I weep for my virginity—I and my friends.”
Nhưng xin cho con làm việc này trước: Xin cha cho con hai tháng, để con cùng các bạn lên miền đồi núi, khóc than cho thân phận trinh nữ của con.”
38 And he says, “Go”; and he sends her away [for] two months, and she goes, she and her friends, and she weeps for her virginity on the hills;
Giép-thê nói: “Được, con cứ đi.” Và như vậy, cô và các bạn gái mình than khóc suốt hai tháng trên các đồi núi.
39 and it comes to pass at the end of two months that she turns back to her father, and he does to her his vow which he has vowed, and she did not know a man; and it is a statute in Israel:
Sau hai tháng, cô trở về gặp cha. Ông thực hiện lời đã thề nguyện. Như thế, cô sống trọn đời trinh nữ. Từ đó trong Ít-ra-ên có tục lệ,
40 from time to time the daughters of Israel go to talk to the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite, four days in a year.
hằng năm các thiếu nữ Ít-ra-ên đi khóc than con gái của Giép-thê trong bốn ngày.
