Joshua 6
1 And Jericho shuts itself up, and is shut up, because of the presence of the sons of Israel—none going out, and none coming in.
Or, Jéricho était fermée et fortifiée, dans la crainte des enfants d’Israël, et nul n’osait sortir ou entrer.
2 And YHWH says to Joshua, “See, I have given Jericho and its king into your hand—mighty men of valor,
Et le Seigneur dit à Josué: Voici que j’ai livré en la main Jéricho et son roi et tous ses braves guerriers.
3 and you have surrounded the city—all the men of battle—going around the city once; thus you do [for] six days;
Faites le tour de la ville, vous tous combattants, une fois par jour. Ainsi ferez-vous pendant six jours.
4 and seven priests carry seven horns of the rams before the Ark, and on the seventh day you go around the city seven times, and the priests blow with the horns,
Mais, au septième jour, que des prêtres portent sept trompettes dont on fait usage pendant le Jubilé, et qu’ils précèdent l’arche de l’alliance; et sept fois vous ferez le tour de la ville, et les prêtres sonneront des trompettes.
5 and it has been, in the prolonging of the horn of the ram, in your hearing the voice of the horn, all the people shout [with] a great shout, and the wall of the city has fallen under it, and the people have gone up, each straight before him.”
Et lorsque le son de la trompette se fera entendre, d’abord prolongé, puis entrecoupé, et qu’il retentira à vos oreilles, tout le peuple ensemble poussera les plus grands cris, et les murailles de la ville s’écrouleront jusqu’aux fondements, et chacun entrera par l’endroit vis-à-vis duquel il se trouvera.
6 And Joshua son of Nun calls to the priests and says to them, “Carry the Ark of the Covenant, and seven priests carry seven horns of the rams before the Ark of YHWH”;
Josué, fils de Nun, appela donc les prêtres et leur dit: Portez l’arche de l’alliance, et que sept autres prêtres portent sept trompettes du jubilé, et qu’ils marchent devant l’arche du Seigneur.
7 and He said to the people, “Pass over, and go around the city, and he who is armed passes over before the Ark of YHWH.”
Au peuple aussi il dit: Allez, et faites le tour de la ville, armés, précédant l’arche du Seigneur.
8 And it comes to pass, when Joshua speaks to the people, that the seven priests carrying seven horns of the rams before YHWH have passed over and blown with the horns, and the Ark of the Covenant of YHWH is going after them;
Or, lorsque Josué eut achevé ces paroles, et que les sept prêtres sonnaient des sept trompettes devant l’arche de l’alliance du Seigneur,
9 and he who is armed is going before the priests blowing the horns, and he who is gathering up is going after the Ark, going on and blowing with the horns;
Et que toute la troupe armée précédait, le reste du peuple suivait l’arche, et tout retentissait du son des trompettes.
10 and Joshua has commanded the people, saying, “Do not shout, nor cause your voice to be heard, nor does a word go out from your mouth, until the day of my saying to you, Shout! Then you have shouted.”
Or, Josué avait commandé au peuple, disant: Vous ne crierez point, et votre voix ne sera point entendue, et aucun mot ne sortira de votre bouche, jusqu’à ce que vienne le jour auquel je vous dirai: Criez et vociférez.
11 And the Ark of YHWH goes around the city, going around once, and they come into the camp, and lodge in the camp.
L’arche du Seigneur fit donc une fois le tour de la ville pendant le jour, et, revenue au camp, elle y demeura.
12 And Joshua rises early in the morning, and the priests carry the Ark of YHWH,
Mais Josué s’étant levé durant la nuit, les prêtres portèrent l’arche du Seigneur,
13 and seven priests carrying seven horns of the rams before the Ark of YHWH are walking, going on, and they have blown with the horns—and he who is armed is going before them, and he who is gathering up is going behind the Ark of YHWH—going on and blowing with the horns.
Et sept d’entre eux, les sept trompettes dont on fait usage dans le jubilé; et ils précédaient l’arche du Seigneur, marchant et sonnant des trompettes, et le peuple armé allait devant eux, et le reste du peuple suivait l’arche et sonnait des trompettes.
14 And they go around the city once on the second day, and return to the camp; thus they have done [for] six days.
Et le second jour ils firent le tour de la ville une fois, puis ils revinrent dans le camp. Ainsi firent-ils pendant six jours.
15 And it comes to pass, on the seventh day, that they rise early, at the ascending of the dawn, and go around the city, according to this manner, seven times; (only on that day have they gone around the city seven times);
Mais le septième jour, se levant dès l’aurore, ils firent le tour de la ville, comme il leur avait été ordonné, sept fois.
16 and it comes to pass, at the seventh time, the priests have blown with the horns, and Joshua says to the people, “Shout! For YHWH has given the city to you;
Et lorsqu’au septième tour, les prêtres sonnaient de la trompette, Josué dit à tout Israël: Poussez de grands cris; car le Seigneur vous a livré la ville.
17 and the city has been devoted, it and all that [is] in it, to YHWH; only Rahab the harlot lives, she and all who [are] with her in the house, for she hid the messengers whom we sent;
Et que cette ville soit anathème, et que tout ce qui s’y trouve, soit consacré au Seigneur; que la seule Rahab, la femme de mauvaise vie, vive avec tous ceux qui sont à elle dans sa maison; car elle a caché les messagers que nous avons envoyés.
18 and surely you have kept from the devoted thing, lest you devote [yourselves], and have taken from the devoted thing, and have made the camp of Israel become a devoted thing, and have troubled it;
Mais vous, prenez garde que vous ne touchiez à aucune des choses qui vous ont été défendues, que vous ne soyez coupables de prévarication, et que tout le camp d’Israël ne soit sous le péché, et n’éprouve de la disgrâce.
19 and all the silver and gold, and vessels of bronze and iron—it [is] holy to YHWH; it comes into the treasury of YHWH.”
Ainsi, que tout ce qu’il y aura d’or et d’argent, et de vases d’airain et de fer, soit consacré au Seigneur et déposé dans ses trésors.
20 And the people shout, and blow with the horns, and it comes to pass, when the people hear the voice of the horn, that the people shout [with] a great shout, and the wall falls under it, and the people goes up into the city, each straight before him, and they capture the city;
Tout le peuple donc poussant de grands cris, et les trompettes sonnant, quand la voix et le son eurent retenti aux oreilles de la multitude, les murs soudain s’écroulèrent, chacun monta par le lieu qui était vis-à-vis de lui, et ils prirent la ville.
21 and they devote all that [is] in the city, from man even to woman, from young even to aged, even to ox, and sheep, and donkey, by the mouth of the sword.
Et ils tuèrent tout ce qui s’y trouvait, depuis l’homme jusqu’à la femme, depuis l’enfant jusqu’au vieillard. Les bœufs aussi, et les brebis et les ânes, ils les frappèrent du tranchant du glaive.
22 And Joshua said to the two men who are spying out the land, “Go into the house of the woman, the harlot, and bring out the woman from there, and all whom she has, as you have sworn to her.”
Mais Josué dit aux deux hommes qui avaient été envoyés comme espions: Entrez dans la maison de la femme de mauvaise vie, et faites-la sortir, ainsi que tout ce qui est à elle, comme vous lui avez assuré par serment.
23 And the young men, those spying, go in and bring out Rahab, and her father, and her mother, and her brothers, and all whom she has; indeed, they have brought out all her relatives, and place them at the outside of the camp of Israel.
Et les deux jeunes hommes étant entrés, firent sortir Rahab, son père et sa mère, ses frères aussi, tout ce qui leur appartenait et toute sa parenté, et les firent demeurer hors du camp d’Israël.
24 And they have burned the city with fire, and all that [is] in it; only, the silver and the gold, and the vessels of bronze, and of iron, they have given [to] the treasury of the house of YHWH;
Mais la ville et tout ce qui s’y trouvait, ils les brûlèrent, excepté l’or, l’argent, les vases d’airain et de fer, qu’ils consacrèrent pour le trésor du Seigneur.
25 and Rahab the harlot, and the house of her father, and all whom she has, Joshua has kept alive; and she dwells in the midst of Israel to this day, for she hid the messengers whom Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.
Quant à Rahab, la femme de mauvaise vie, à la maison de son père et à tout ce qu’elle avait, Josué leur conserva la vie, et ils ont habité au milieu d’Israël jusqu’au présent jour, parce qu’elle cacha les messagers qu’il avait envoyés pour explorer Jéricho. En ce temps-là, Josué fit une imprécation, disant:
26 And Joshua adjures [them] at that time, saying, “Cursed [is] the man before YHWH who raises up and has built this city, [even] Jericho; he lays its foundation in his firstborn, and he sets up its doors in his youngest.”
Maudit devant le Seigneur; l’homme qui relèvera et rebâtira la ville de Jéricho! Que ce soit sur son premier-né qu’il en jette les fondements, et que ce soit sur le dernier de ses enfants qu’il en pose les portes.
27 And YHWH is with Joshua, and his fame is in all the land.
Le Seigneur fut donc avec Josué, et son nom se répandit sur toute la terre.
