Joshua 4
1 And it comes to pass, when all the nation has completed to pass over the Jordan, that YHWH speaks to Joshua, saying,
Lorsque toute la nation eut entièrement traversé le Jourdain, Yahvé parla à Josué et dit:
2 “Take for yourselves twelve men out of the people, one man—one man out of a tribe;
« Prenez douze hommes parmi le peuple, un homme de chaque tribu,
3 and command them, saying, Take up for yourselves from this [place], from the midst of the Jordan, from the established standing-place of the feet of the priests, twelve stones, and you have removed them over with you, and placed them in the lodging-place in which you lodge tonight.”
et donnez-leur cet ordre: « Prenez au milieu du Jourdain, à l'endroit où les pieds des prêtres se sont arrêtés, douze pierres, emportez-les avec vous et posez-les à l'endroit où vous camperez cette nuit ».
4 And Joshua calls to the twelve men whom he prepared out of the sons of Israel, one man—one man out of a tribe;
Alors Josué appela les douze hommes qu'il avait préparés parmi les enfants d'Israël, un homme de chaque tribu.
5 and Joshua says to them, “Pass over before the Ark of your God YHWH into the midst of the Jordan, and each of you lift up one stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Israel,
Josué leur dit: « Traversez devant l'arche de Yahvé votre Dieu jusqu'au milieu du Jourdain, et chacun de vous ramassera une pierre et la mettra sur son épaule, selon le nombre des tribus des enfants d'Israël.
6 so that this is a sign in your midst when your children ask hereafter, saying, What [are] these stones to you?
Ce sera un signe parmi vous, et lorsque vos enfants demanderont plus tard: « Que signifient ces pierres? »
7 That you have said to them, Because the waters of the Jordan were cut off, at the presence of the Ark of the Covenant of YHWH; in its passing over into the Jordan the waters of the Jordan were cut off; and these stones have been for a memorial to the sons of Israel for all time.”
vous leur répondrez: « Parce que les eaux du Jourdain ont été coupées devant l'arche de l'alliance de Yahvé. Quand elle a traversé le Jourdain, les eaux du Jourdain ont été coupées. Ces pierres serviront de mémorial aux enfants d'Israël pour toujours ».
8 And the sons of Israel do so as Joshua commanded, and take up twelve stones out of the midst of the Jordan, as YHWH has spoken to Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Israel, and remove them over with them to the lodging-place, and place them there,
Les enfants d'Israël firent ce que Josué avait ordonné et ils enlevèrent douze pierres du milieu du Jourdain, comme Yahvé l'avait dit à Josué, selon le nombre des tribus des enfants d'Israël. Ils les transportèrent avec eux jusqu'au lieu où ils campaient, et les y déposèrent.
9 even the twelve stones Joshua has raised up out of the midst of the Jordan, the place of the standing of the feet of the priests carrying the Ark of the Covenant, and they are there to this day.
Josué dressa douze pierres au milieu du Jourdain, à l'endroit où se tenaient les pieds des prêtres qui portaient l'arche de l'alliance; elles y sont encore aujourd'hui.
10 And the priests carrying the Ark are standing in the midst of the Jordan until the completion of the whole thing which YHWH commanded Joshua to speak to the people, according to all that Moses commanded Joshua, and the people hurry and pass over.
Car les prêtres qui portaient l'arche se tinrent au milieu du Jourdain jusqu'à ce que soit achevé tout ce que Yahvé avait ordonné à Josué de dire au peuple, selon tout ce que Moïse avait ordonné à Josué; et le peuple se hâta de passer.
11 And it comes to pass, when all the people have completed to pass over, that the Ark of YHWH passes over, and the priests, in the presence of the people;
Lorsque tout le peuple eut complètement traversé, l'arche de Yahvé traversa avec les prêtres en présence du peuple.
12 and the sons of Reuben, and the sons of Gad, and the half of the tribe of Manasseh, pass over, by fifties, before the sons of Israel, as Moses had spoken to them;
Les fils de Ruben, les fils de Gad et la demi-tribu de Manassé passèrent armés devant les enfants d'Israël, comme Moïse le leur avait dit.
13 about forty thousand, armed ones of the host, passed over before YHWH for battle, to the plains of Jericho.
Environ quarante mille hommes, prêts et armés pour la guerre, passèrent devant l'Éternel pour combattre, dans les plaines de Jéricho.
14 On that day YHWH has made Joshua great in the eyes of all Israel, and they fear him, as they feared Moses, all [the] days of his life.
Ce jour-là, l'Éternel magnifia Josué aux yeux de tout Israël, et ils le craignirent, comme ils avaient craint Moïse, tous les jours de sa vie.
15 And YHWH speaks to Joshua, saying,
Yahvé parla à Josué et dit:
16 “Command the priests carrying the Ark of the Testimony, and they come up out of the Jordan.”
« Ordonne aux prêtres qui portent l'arche de l'alliance de sortir du Jourdain. »
17 And Joshua commands the priests, saying, “Come up out of the Jordan.”
Josué donna cet ordre aux sacrificateurs: « Montez du Jourdain! »
18 And it comes to pass, in the coming up of the priests carrying the Ark of the Covenant of YHWH out of the midst of the Jordan—the soles of the feet of the priests have been drawn up into the dry ground—and the waters of the Jordan return to their place, and go over all its banks as before.
Lorsque les prêtres qui portaient l'arche de l'alliance de Yahvé furent sortis du milieu du Jourdain, et que la plante des pieds des prêtres fut levée sur la terre sèche, les eaux du Jourdain retournèrent à leur place et passèrent par-dessus toutes ses rives, comme auparavant.
19 And the people have come up out of the Jordan on the tenth of the first month, and encamp in Gilgal, in the extremity east of Jericho;
Le peuple sortit du Jourdain le dixième jour du premier mois, et il campa à Guilgal, à la frontière orientale de Jéricho.
20 and these twelve stones, which they have taken out of the Jordan, Joshua has raised up in Gilgal.
Josué dressa à Gilgal les douze pierres qu'ils avaient prises dans le Jourdain.
21 And he speaks to the sons of Israel, saying, “When your sons ask their fathers hereafter, saying, What [are] these stones?
Il parla aux enfants d'Israël et dit: « Lorsque vos enfants demanderont un jour à leurs pères: « Que signifient ces pierres? »
22 Then you have caused your sons to know, saying, Israel passed over this Jordan on dry land;
Vous le ferez savoir à vos enfants en disant: « Israël a passé ce Jourdain à sec.
23 because your God YHWH dried up the waters of the Jordan at your presence, until your passing over, as your God YHWH did to the Red Sea which He dried up at our presence until our passing over;
Car Yahvé ton Dieu a mis à sec les eaux du Jourdain devant toi jusqu'à ce que tu aies traversé, comme Yahvé ton Dieu l'a fait pour la mer Rouge, qu'il a mise à sec devant nous jusqu'à ce que nous l'ayons traversée,
24 so that all the people of the land know the hand of YHWH—that it [is] strong, so that you have feared your God YHWH [for] all the days.”
afin que tous les peuples de la terre sachent que la main de Yahvé est puissante, et que vous craigniez Yahvé votre Dieu pour toujours. »
