< John 7 >

1 And Jesus was walking after these things in Galilee, for He did not wish to walk in Judea, because the Jews were seeking to kill Him,
tataḥ paraṁ yihūdīyalōkāstaṁ hantuṁ samaihanta tasmād yīśu ryihūdāpradēśē paryyaṭituṁ nēcchan gālīl pradēśē paryyaṭituṁ prārabhata|
2 and the celebration of the Jews was near—that of Shelters—
kintu tasmin samayē yihūdīyānāṁ dūṣyavāsanāmōtsava upasthitē
3 His brothers, therefore, said to Him, “Depart from here, and go away to Judea, that Your disciples may also behold Your works that You do;
tasya bhrātarastam avadan yāni karmmāṇi tvayā kriyantē tāni yathā tava śiṣyāḥ paśyanti tadarthaṁ tvamitaḥ sthānād yihūdīyadēśaṁ vraja|
4 for no one does anything in secret, and himself seeks to be in public; if you do these things—reveal Yourself to the world”;
yaḥ kaścit svayaṁ pracikāśiṣati sa kadāpi guptaṁ karmma na karōti yadīdr̥śaṁ karmma karōṣi tarhi jagati nijaṁ paricāyaya|
5 for not even His brothers were believing in Him.
yatastasya bhrātarōpi taṁ na viśvasanti|
6 Jesus, therefore, says to them, “My time is not yet present, but your time is always ready;
tadā yīśustān avōcat mama samaya idānīṁ nōpatiṣṭhati kintu yuṣmākaṁ samayaḥ satatam upatiṣṭhati|
7 the world is not able to hate you, but it hates Me, because I testify concerning it that its works are evil.
jagatō lōkā yuṣmān r̥tīyituṁ na śakruvanti kintu māmēva r̥tīyantē yatastēṣāṁ karmāṇi duṣṭāni tatra sākṣyamidam ahaṁ dadāmi|
8 You—go up to this celebration; I do not yet go up to this celebration, because My time has not yet been fulfilled”;
ataēva yūyam utsavē'smin yāta nāham idānīm asminnutsavē yāmi yatō mama samaya idānīṁ na sampūrṇaḥ|
9 and saying these things to them, He remained in Galilee.
iti vākyam ukttvā sa gālīli sthitavān
10 And when His brothers went up, then also He Himself went up to the celebration, not openly, but as in secret;
kintu tasya bhrātr̥ṣu tatra prasthitēṣu satsu sō'prakaṭa utsavam agacchat|
11 the Jews, therefore, were seeking Him in the celebration, and said, “Where is that One?”
anantaram utsavam upasthitā yihūdīyāstaṁ mr̥gayitvāpr̥cchan sa kutra?
12 And there was much murmuring about Him among the multitudes, some indeed said, “He is good”; and others said, “No, but He leads the multitude astray”;
tatō lōkānāṁ madhyē tasmin nānāvidhā vivādā bhavitum ārabdhavantaḥ| kēcid avōcan sa uttamaḥ puruṣaḥ kēcid avōcan na tathā varaṁ lōkānāṁ bhramaṁ janayati|
13 no one, however, was speaking freely about Him, through fear of the Jews.
kintu yihūdīyānāṁ bhayāt kōpi tasya pakṣē spaṣṭaṁ nākathayat|
14 And it being now the middle of the celebration, Jesus went up to the temple, and He was teaching,
tataḥ param utsavasya madhyasamayē yīśu rmandiraṁ gatvā samupadiśati sma|
15 and the Jews were wondering, saying, “How has this One known letters—having not learned?”
tatō yihūdīyā lōkā āścaryyaṁ jñātvākathayan ēṣā mānuṣō nādhītyā katham ētādr̥śō vidvānabhūt?
16 Jesus answered them and said, “My teaching is not Mine, but His who sent Me;
tadā yīśuḥ pratyavōcad upadēśōyaṁ na mama kintu yō māṁ prēṣitavān tasya|
17 if anyone may will to do His will, he will know concerning the teaching, whether it is of God, or—[if] I speak from Myself.
yō janō nidēśaṁ tasya grahīṣyati mamōpadēśō mattō bhavati kim īśvarād bhavati sa ganastajjñātuṁ śakṣyati|
18 He who is speaking from himself seeks his own glory, but he who is seeking the glory of him who sent him, this one is true, and unrighteousness is not in him;
yō janaḥ svataḥ kathayati sa svīyaṁ gauravam īhatē kintu yaḥ prērayitu rgauravam īhatē sa satyavādī tasmin kōpyadharmmō nāsti|
19 has not Moses given you the Law? And none of you does the Law; why do you seek to kill Me?”
mūsā yuṣmabhyaṁ vyavasthāgranthaṁ kiṁ nādadāt? kintu yuṣmākaṁ kōpi tāṁ vyavasthāṁ na samācarati| māṁ hantuṁ kutō yatadhvē?
20 The multitude answered and said, “You have a demon, who seeks to kill You?”
tadā lōkā avadan tvaṁ bhūtagrastastvāṁ hantuṁ kō yatatē?
21 Jesus answered and said to them, “I did one work, and you all wonder,
tatō yīśuravōcad ēkaṁ karmma mayākāri tasmād yūyaṁ sarvva mahāścaryyaṁ manyadhvē|
22 because of this, Moses has given you the circumcision—not that it is of Moses, but of the fathers—and on a Sabbath you circumcise a man;
mūsā yuṣmabhyaṁ tvakchēdavidhiṁ pradadau sa mūsātō na jātaḥ kintu pitr̥puruṣēbhyō jātaḥ tēna viśrāmavārē'pi mānuṣāṇāṁ tvakchēdaṁ kurutha|
23 if a man receives circumcision on a Sabbath that the Law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with Me that I made a man all whole on a Sabbath?
ataēva viśrāmavārē manuṣyāṇāṁ tvakchēdē kr̥tē yadi mūsāvyavasthāmaṅganaṁ na bhavati tarhi mayā viśrāmavārē mānuṣaḥ sampūrṇarūpēṇa svasthō'kāri tatkāraṇād yūyaṁ kiṁ mahyaṁ kupyatha?
24 Do not judge according to appearance, but the righteous judgment judge.”
sapakṣapātaṁ vicāramakr̥tvā nyāyyaṁ vicāraṁ kuruta|
25 Certain, therefore, of the Jerusalemites said, “Is this not He whom they are seeking to kill?
tadā yirūśālam nivāsinaḥ katipayajanā akathayan imē yaṁ hantuṁ cēṣṭantē sa ēvāyaṁ kiṁ na?
26 And behold, He speaks freely, and they say nothing to Him; did the rulers truly know that this is the Christ?
kintu paśyata nirbhayaḥ san kathāṁ kathayati tathāpi kimapi a vadantyētē ayamēvābhiṣikttō bhavatīti niścitaṁ kimadhipatayō jānanti?
27 But this One—we have known where He is from; and the Christ, when He comes, no one knows where He is from.”
manujōyaṁ kasmādāgamad iti vayaṁ jānōmaḥ kintvabhiṣiktta āgatē sa kasmādāgatavān iti kōpi jñātuṁ na śakṣyati|
28 Jesus cried, therefore, in the temple, teaching and saying, “You have both known Me, and you have known from where I am; and I have not come of Myself, but He who sent Me is true, whom you have not known;
tadā yīśu rmadhyēmandiram upadiśan uccaiḥkāram ukttavān yūyaṁ kiṁ māṁ jānītha? kasmāccāgatōsmi tadapi kiṁ jānītha? nāhaṁ svata āgatōsmi kintu yaḥ satyavādī saēva māṁ prēṣitavān yūyaṁ taṁ na jānītha|
29 and I have known Him, because I am from Him, and He sent Me.”
tamahaṁ jānē tēnāhaṁ prērita agatōsmi|
30 They were seeking, therefore, to seize Him, and no one laid the hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come,
tasmād yihūdīyāstaṁ dharttum udyatāstathāpi kōpi tasya gātrē hastaṁ nārpayad yatō hētōstadā tasya samayō nōpatiṣṭhati|
31 and many out of the multitude believed in Him and said, “The Christ—when He may come—will He do more signs than these that this One did?”
kintu bahavō lōkāstasmin viśvasya kathitavāntō'bhiṣikttapuruṣa āgatya mānuṣasyāsya kriyābhyaḥ kim adhikā āścaryyāḥ kriyāḥ kariṣyati?
32 The Pharisees heard the multitude murmuring these things concerning Him, and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers that they may take Him;
tataḥ paraṁ lōkāstasmin itthaṁ vivadantē phirūśinaḥ pradhānayājakāñcēti śrutavantastaṁ dhr̥tvā nētuṁ padātigaṇaṁ prēṣayāmāsuḥ|
33 Jesus, therefore, said to them, “Yet a short time I am with you, and I go away to Him who sent Me;
tatō yīśuravadad aham alpadināni yuṣmābhiḥ sārddhaṁ sthitvā matprērayituḥ samīpaṁ yāsyāmi|
34 you will seek Me, and you will not find; and where I am, you are not able to come.”
māṁ mr̥gayiṣyadhvē kintūddēśaṁ na lapsyadhvē ratra sthāsyāmi tatra yūyaṁ gantuṁ na śakṣyatha|
35 The Jews, therefore, said among themselves, “To where is this One about to go that we will not find Him? Is He about to go to the dispersion of the Greeks, and to teach the Greeks?
tadā yihūdīyāḥ parasparaṁ vakttumārēbhirē asyōddēśaṁ na prāpsyāma ētādr̥śaṁ kiṁ sthānaṁ yāsyati? bhinnadēśē vikīrṇānāṁ yihūdīyānāṁ sannidhim ēṣa gatvā tān upadēkṣyati kiṁ?
36 What is this word that He said, You will seek Me, and you will not find? And, Where I am, you are not able to come?”
nō cēt māṁ gavēṣayiṣyatha kintūddēśaṁ na prāpsyatha ēṣa kōdr̥śaṁ vākyamidaṁ vadati?
37 And in the last, the great day of the celebration, Jesus stood and cried, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink;
anantaram utsavasya caramē'hani arthāt pradhānadinē yīśuruttiṣṭhan uccaiḥkāram āhvayan uditavān yadi kaścit tr̥ṣārttō bhavati tarhi mamāntikam āgatya pivatu|

yaḥ kaścinmayi viśvasiti dharmmagranthasya vacanānusārēṇa tasyābhyantaratō'mr̥tatōyasya srōtāṁsi nirgamiṣyanti|
39 and this He said of the Spirit, which those believing in Him were about to receive; for not yet was the Holy Spirit, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
yē tasmin viśvasanti ta ātmānaṁ prāpsyantītyarthē sa idaṁ vākyaṁ vyāhr̥tavān ētatkālaṁ yāvad yīśu rvibhavaṁ na prāptastasmāt pavitra ātmā nādīyata|
40 Many, therefore, out of the multitude, having heard the word, said, “This is truly the Prophet”;
ētāṁ vāṇīṁ śrutvā bahavō lōkā avadan ayamēva niścitaṁ sa bhaviṣyadvādī|
41 others said, “This is the Christ”; and others said, “Why, does the Christ come out of Galilee?
kēcid akathayan ēṣaēva sōbhiṣikttaḥ kintu kēcid avadan sōbhiṣikttaḥ kiṁ gālīl pradēśē janiṣyatē?
42 Did the Writing not say that out of the seed of David, and from Beth-Lehem—the village where David was—the Christ comes?”
sōbhiṣikttō dāyūdō vaṁśē dāyūdō janmasthānē baitlēhami pattanē janiṣyatē dharmmagranthē kimitthaṁ likhitaṁ nāsti?
43 A division, therefore, arose among the multitude because of Him.
itthaṁ tasmin lōkānāṁ bhinnavākyatā jātā|
44 And certain of them were willing to seize Him, but no one laid hands on Him;
katipayalōkāstaṁ dharttum aicchan tathāpi tadvapuṣi kōpi hastaṁ nārpayat|
45 the officers came, therefore, to the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said to them, “Why did you not bring Him?”
anantaraṁ pādātigaṇē pradhānayājakānāṁ phirūśināñca samīpamāgatavati tē tān apr̥cchan kutō hētōstaṁ nānayata?
46 The officers answered, “Never so spoke man—as this Man.”
tadā padātayaḥ pratyavadan sa mānava iva kōpi kadāpi nōpādiśat|
47 The Pharisees, therefore, answered them, “Have you also been led astray?
tataḥ phirūśinaḥ prāvōcan yūyamapi kimabhrāmiṣṭa?
48 Did anyone out of the rulers believe in Him? Or out of the Pharisees?
adhipatīnāṁ phirūśināñca kōpi kiṁ tasmin vyaśvasīt?
49 But this multitude, that is not knowing the Law, is accursed.”
yē śāstraṁ na jānanti ta imē'dhamalōkāēva śāpagrastāḥ|
50 Nicodemus says to them—he who came by night to Him—being one of them,
tadā nikadīmanāmā tēṣāmēkō yaḥ kṣaṇadāyāṁ yīśōḥ sannidhim agāt sa ukttavān
51 “Does our law judge the Man, if it may not hear from Him first, and know what He does?”
tasya vākyē na śrutē karmmaṇi ca na viditē 'smākaṁ vyavasthā kiṁ kañcana manujaṁ dōṣīkarōti?
52 They answered and said to him, “Are you also out of Galilee? Search and see that a prophet has not risen out of Galilee”; [[
tatastē vyāharan tvamapi kiṁ gālīlīyalōkaḥ? vivicya paśya galīli kōpi bhaviṣyadvādī nōtpadyatē|
53 and each one went on to his house, but Jesus went on to the Mount of Olives.
