< John 6 >

1 After these things Jesus went away beyond the Sea of Galilee (of Tiberias),
After this, Jesus crossed the Sea of Galilee — otherwise called the Lake of Tiberias.
2 and there was following Him a great multitude, because they were seeing His signs that He was doing on the ailing;
A great crowd of people, however, followed him, because they saw the signs of his mission in his work among those who were afflicted.
3 and Jesus went up to the mountain, and He was sitting with His disciples there,
Jesus went up the hill, and sat down there with his disciples.
4 and the Passover was near, the celebration of the Jews.
It was near the time of the Jewish Festival of the Passover.
5 Jesus then having lifted up [His] eyes and having seen that a great multitude comes to Him, says to Philip, “From where will we buy loaves, that these may eat?”
Looking up, and noticing that a great crowd was coming towards him, Jesus said to Philip: “Where are we to buy bread for these people to eat?”
6 And this He said, trying him, for He Himself had known what He was about to do.
He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he meant to do.
7 Philip answered Him, “Two hundred denarii worth of loaves are not sufficient to them, that each of them may receive some little”;
“Twenty pounds’ worth of bread,” answered Philip, “would not be enough for each of them to have a little.”
8 one of His disciples—Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter—says to Him,
“There is a boy here,” said Andrew, another of his disciples, Simon Peter’s brother,
9 “There is one little boy here who has five barley loaves and two fishes, but these—what are they to so many?”
“Who has five barley loaves and two fishes; but what is that for so many?”
10 And Jesus said, “Make the men to sit down”; and there was much grass in the place, the men then sat down, in number, as it were, five thousand,
“Make the people sit down,” said Jesus. It was a grassy spot; so the men, who numbered about five thousand, sat down,
11 and Jesus took the loaves, and having given thanks He distributed [them] to the disciples, and the disciples to those reclining, in like manner, also of the little fishes as much as they wished.
and then Jesus took the loaves, and, after saying the thanksgiving, distributed them to those who were sitting down; and the same with the fish, giving the people as much as they wanted.
12 And when they were filled, He says to His disciples, “Gather together the broken pieces that are left over, that nothing may be lost”;
When they were satisfied, Jesus said to his disciples: “Collect the broken pieces that are left, so that nothing may be wasted.”
13 they gathered together, therefore, and filled twelve hand-baskets with broken pieces, from the five barley loaves that were over to those having eaten.
The disciples did so, and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves, which were left after all had eaten.
14 The men, then, having seen the sign that Jesus did, said, “This is truly the Prophet who is coming into the world”;
When the people saw the signs which Jesus gave, they said: “This is certainly ‘the Prophet who was to come’ into the world.”
15 Jesus, therefore, having known that they are about to come, and to seize Him by force that they may make Him king, retired again to the mountain Himself alone.
But Jesus, having discovered that they were intending to come and carry him off to make him King, retired again up the hill, quite alone.
16 And when evening came, His disciples went down to the sea,
When evening fell, his disciples went down to the Sea,
17 and having entered into the boat, they were going over the sea to Capernaum, and darkness had already come, and Jesus had not come to them,
and, getting into a boat, began to cross to Capernaum. By this time darkness had set in, and Jesus had not yet come back to them;
18 the sea also—a great wind blowing—was being raised,
the Sea, too, was getting rough, for a strong wind was blowing.
19 having pushed onward, therefore, about twenty-five or thirty stadia, they behold Jesus walking on the sea, and coming near to the boat, and they were afraid;
When they had rowed three or four miles, they caught sight of him walking on the water and approaching the boat, and they were frightened.
20 and He says to them, “I AM; do not be afraid”;
But Jesus said to them: “It is I; do not be afraid!”
21 they were willing then to receive Him into the boat, and immediately the boat came to the land to which they were going.
And after this they were glad to take him into the boat; and the boat at once arrived off the shore, for which they had been making.
22 On the next day, the multitude that was standing on the other side of the sea, having seen that there was no other little boat there except one—that into which His disciples entered—and that Jesus did not go in with His disciples into the little boat, but His disciples went away alone
The people who remained on the further side of the Sea had seen that only one boat had been there, and that Jesus had not gone into it with his disciples, but that they had left without him.
23 (and other little boats came from Tiberias, near the place where they ate the bread, the LORD having given thanks),
Some boats, however, had come from Tiberias, from near the spot where they had eaten the bread after the Master had said the thanksgiving.
24 when therefore the multitude saw that Jesus is not there, nor His disciples, they also entered into the boats themselves, and came to Capernaum seeking Jesus;
So, on the next day, when the people saw that Jesus was not there, or his disciples either, they themselves got into the boats, and went to Capernaum to look for him.
25 and having found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, “Rabbi, when have You come here?”
And, when they found him on the other side of the Sea, they said: “When did you get here, Rabbi?”
26 Jesus answered them and said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate of the loaves, and were satisfied;
“In truth I tell you,” answered Jesus, “it is not on account of the signs which you saw that you are looking for me, but because you had the bread to eat and were satisfied.
27 do not work for the food that is perishing, but for the food that is remaining to continuous life, which the Son of Man will give to you, for the Father sealed Him—[even] God.” (aiōnios g166)
Work, not for the food that perishes, but for the food that lasts for Immortal Life, which the Son of Man will give you; for upon him the Father — God himself — has set the seal of his approval.” (aiōnios g166)
28 Therefore they said to Him, “What may we do that we may work the works of God?”
“How,” they asked, “are we to do the work that God would have us do?”
29 Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you may believe in Him whom He sent.”
“The work that God would have you do,” answered Jesus, “is to believe in him whom God sent as his Messenger.”
30 Therefore they said to Him, “What sign, then, do You do, that we may see and may believe You? What do You work?
“What sign, then,” they asked, “are you giving, which we may see, and so believe you? What is the work that you are doing?
31 Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, according as it is having been written: He gave them bread out of Heaven to eat.”
Our ancestors had the manna to eat in the desert; as Scripture says — ‘He gave them bread from Heaven to eat.’”
32 Jesus, therefore, said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, Moses did not give you the bread out of Heaven, but My Father gives you the true bread out of Heaven;
“In truth I tell you,” replied Jesus, “Moses did not give you the Bread from Heaven, but my Father does give you the true Bread from Heaven;
33 for the bread of God is Him coming down out of Heaven, and giving life to the world.”
for the Bread that God gives is that which comes down from Heaven, and gives Life to the world.”
34 Therefore they said to Him, “Lord, always give us this bread.”
“Master,” they exclaimed, “give us that Bread always!”
35 And Jesus said to them, “I AM the bread of life; he who is coming to Me may not hunger, and he who is believing in Me may not thirst—at any time;
“I am the Life-giving Bread,” Jesus said to them; “he that comes to me shall never be hungry, and he that believes in me shall never thirst again.
36 but I said to you that you also have seen Me, and you do not believe;
But, as I have said already, you have seen me, and yet you do not believe in me.
37 all that the Father gives to Me will come to Me; and him who is coming to Me, I will never cast outside,
All those whom the Father gives me will come to me; and no one who comes to me will I ever turn away.
38 because I have come down out of Heaven, not that I may do My will, but the will of Him who sent Me.
For I have come down from Heaven, to do, not my own will, but the will of him who sent me;
39 And this is the will of the Father who sent Me, that all that He has given to Me, I may lose none of it, but may raise it up in the last day;
and his will is this — that I should not lose one of all those whom he has given me, but should raise them up at the Last Day.
40 and this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who is beholding the Son, and is believing in Him, may have continuous life, and I will raise him up in the last day.” (aiōnios g166)
For it is the will of my Father that every one who sees the Son, and believes in him, should have Immortal Life; and I myself will raise him up at the Last Day.” (aiōnios g166)
41 The Jews, therefore, were murmuring at Him, because He said, “I AM the bread that came down out of Heaven”;
Upon this the Jews began murmuring against Jesus for saying — ‘I am the Bread which came down from Heaven.’
42 and they said, “Is this not Jesus, the Son of Joseph, whose father and mother we have known? How then does this One say, I have come down out of Heaven?”
“Is not this Jesus, Joseph’s son,” they asked, “whose father and mother we know? How is it that he now says that he has come down from Heaven?”
43 Jesus answered, therefore, and said to them, “Do not murmur with one another;
“Do not murmur among yourselves,” said Jesus in reply.
44 no one is able to come to Me if the Father who sent Me may not draw him, and I will raise him up in the last day;
“No one can come to me, unless the Father who sent me draws him to me; and I will raise him up at the Last Day.
45 it is having been written in the Prophets: And they will all be taught of God; everyone, therefore, who heard from the Father, and learned, comes to Me;
It is said in the Prophets — ‘And they shall all be taught by God.’ Every one who is taught by the Father and learns from him comes to me.
46 not that anyone has seen the Father, except He who is from God, He has seen the Father.
Not that any one has seen the Father, except him who is from God — he has seen the Father.
47 Truly, truly, I say to you, he who is believing in Me has continuous life; (aiōnios g166)
In truth I tell you, he who believes in me has Immortal Life. (aiōnios g166)
48 I AM the bread of life;
I am the Life-giving Bread.
49 your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness and they died;
Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert, and yet died.
50 this is the bread that is coming down out of Heaven, that anyone may eat of it, and not die.
The Bread that comes down from Heaven is such that whoever eats of it will never die.
51 I AM the living bread that came down out of Heaven; if anyone may eat of this bread he will live—throughout the age; and the bread also that I will give is My flesh, that I will give for the life of the world.” (aiōn g165)
I am the Living Bread that has come down from Heaven. If any one eats of this Bread, he will live for ever; and the Bread that I shall give is my flesh, which I will give for the Life of the world.” (aiōn g165)
52 The Jews, therefore, were striving with one another, saying, “How is this One able to give us [His] flesh to eat?”
Upon this the Jews began disputing with one another: “How is it possible for this man to give us his flesh to eat?”
53 Jesus, therefore, said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, if you may not eat the flesh of the Son of Man, and may not drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves;
“In truth I tell you,” answered Jesus, “unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man, and drink his blood, you have not Life within you.
54 he who is eating My flesh, and is drinking My blood, has continuous life, and I will raise him up in the last day; (aiōnios g166)
He who takes my flesh for his food, and drinks my blood, has Immortal Life; and I will raise him up at the Last Day. (aiōnios g166)
55 for My flesh is truly food, and My blood is truly drink;
For my flesh is true food, and my blood true drink.
56 he who is eating My flesh, and is drinking My blood, remains in Me, and I in him.
He who takes my flesh for his food, and drinks my blood, remains united to me, and I to him.
57 According as the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, he also who is eating Me, even that one will live because of Me;
As the Living Father sent me as his Messenger, and as I live because the Father lives, so he who takes me for his food shall live because I live.
58 this is the bread that came down out of Heaven; not as your fathers ate the manna, and died; he who is eating this bread will live—throughout the age.” (aiōn g165)
That is the Bread which has come down from Heaven — not such as your ancestors ate, and yet died; he who takes this Bread for his food shall live for ever.” (aiōn g165)
59 He said these things in a synagogue, teaching in Capernaum;
All this Jesus said in a Synagogue, when he was teaching in Capernaum.
60 many, therefore, of His disciples having heard, said, “This word is hard; who is able to hear it?”
On hearing it, many of his disciples said: “This is harsh doctrine! Who can bear to listen to it?”
61 And Jesus having known in Himself that His disciples are murmuring about this, said to them, “Does this stumble you?
But Jesus, aware that his disciples were murmuring about it, said to them:
62 If then you may behold the Son of Man going up where He was before?
“Is this a hindrance to you? What, then, if you should see the Son of Man ascending where he was before?
63 It is the Spirit that is giving life; the flesh does not profit anything; the sayings that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life;
It is the Spirit that gives Life; mere flesh is of no avail. In the teaching that I have been giving you there is Spirit and there is Life.
64 but there are certain of you who do not believe”; for Jesus had known from the beginning who they are who are not believing, and who is he who will deliver Him up,
Yet there are some of you who do not believe in me.” For Jesus knew from the first who they were that did not believe in him, and who it was that would betray him;
65 and He said, “Because of this I have said to you, No one is able to come to Me if it may not have been given him from My Father.”
and he added: “This is why I told you that no one can come to me, unless enabled by the Father.”
66 From this [time] many of His disciples went away backward, and were no longer walking with Him,
After this many of his disciples drew back, and did not go about with him any longer.
67 Jesus, therefore, said to the Twelve, “Do you also wish to go away?”
So Jesus said to the Twelve: “Do you also wish to leave me?”
68 Simon Peter, therefore, answered Him, “Lord, to whom will we go? You have sayings of continuous life; (aiōnios g166)
But Simon Peter answered: “Master, to whom shall we go? Immortal Life is in your teaching; (aiōnios g166)
69 and we have believed, and we have known, that You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
and we have learned to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.”
70 Jesus answered them, “Did I not choose you—the Twelve? And of you—one is a devil.”
“Did not I myself choose you to be the Twelve?” replied Jesus; “and yet, even of you, one is playing the ‘Devil’s’ part.”
71 And He spoke of Judas, [son] of Simon Iscariot, for he was about to deliver Him up, being one of the Twelve.
He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, who was about to betray him, though he was one of the Twelve.
