< John 13 >
1 And before the Celebration of the Passover, Jesus knowing that His hour has come, that He may depart out of this world to the Father, having loved His own who [are] in the world—to the end He loved them.
nistArotsavasya kiJcitkAlAt pUrvvaM pRthivyAH pituH samIpagamanasya samayaH sannikarSobhUd iti jJAtvA yIzurAprathamAd yeSu jagatpravAsiSvAtmIyalokeSa prema karoti sma teSu zeSaM yAvat prema kRtavAn|
2 And dinner having come, the Devil already having put [it] into the heart of Judas of Simon, Iscariot, that he may deliver Him up,
pitA tasya haste sarvvaM samarpitavAn svayam Izvarasya samIpAd Agacchad Izvarasya samIpaM yAsyati ca, sarvvANyetAni jJAtvA rajanyAM bhojane sampUrNe sati,
3 Jesus knowing that all things the Father has given to Him—into [His] hands, and that He came forth from God, and He goes to God,
yadA zaitAn taM parahasteSu samarpayituM zimonaH putrasya ISkAriyotiyasya yihUdA antaHkaraNe kupravRttiM samArpayat,
4 rises from the dinner, and lays down His garments, and having taken a towel, He girded Himself;
tadA yIzu rbhojanAsanAd utthAya gAtravastraM mocayitvA gAtramArjanavastraM gRhItvA tena svakaTim abadhnAt,
5 afterward He puts water into the basin, and began to wash the feet of His disciples, and to wipe with the towel with which He was being girded.
pazcAd ekapAtre jalam abhiSicya ziSyANAM pAdAn prakSAlya tena kaTibaddhagAtramArjanavAsasA mArSTuM prArabhata|
6 He comes, therefore, to Simon Peter, and that one says to Him, “Lord, You—do You wash my feet?”
tataH zimonpitarasya samIpamAgate sa uktavAn he prabho bhavAn kiM mama pAdau prakSAlayiSyati?
7 Jesus answered and said to him, “That which I do you have not known now, but you will know after these things”;
yIzuruditavAn ahaM yat karomi tat samprati na jAnAsi kintu pazcAj jJAsyasi|
8 Peter says to Him, “You may not wash my feet—throughout the age.” Jesus answered him, “If I may not wash you, you have no part with Me”; (aiōn )
tataH pitaraH kathitavAn bhavAn kadApi mama pAdau na prakSAlayiSyati| yIzurakathayad yadi tvAM na prakSAlaye tarhi mayi tava kopyaMzo nAsti| (aiōn )
9 Simon Peter says to Him, “Lord, not my feet only, but also the hands and the head.”
tadA zimonpitaraH kathitavAn he prabho tarhi kevalapAdau na, mama hastau zirazca prakSAlayatu|
10 Jesus says to him, “He who has been bathed has no need except to wash his feet, but he is clean altogether; and you are clean, but not all”;
tato yIzuravadad yo jano dhautastasya sarvvAGgapariSkRtatvAt pAdau vinAnyAGgasya prakSAlanApekSA nAsti| yUyaM pariSkRtA iti satyaM kintu na sarvve,
11 for He knew him who is delivering Him up; because of this He said, “You are not all clean.”
yato yo janastaM parakareSu samarpayiSyati taM sa jJAtavAna; ataeva yUyaM sarvve na pariSkRtA imAM kathAM kathitavAn|
12 When, therefore, He washed their feet, and took His garments, having reclined again, He said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you?
itthaM yIzusteSAM pAdAn prakSAlya vastraM paridhAyAsane samupavizya kathitavAn ahaM yuSmAn prati kiM karmmAkArSaM jAnItha?
13 You call Me the Teacher and the LORD, and you say well, for I am;
yUyaM mAM guruM prabhuJca vadatha tat satyameva vadatha yatohaM saeva bhavAmi|
14 if then I washed your feet—the LORD and the Teacher—you also ought to wash one another’s feet.
yadyahaM prabhu rguruzca san yuSmAkaM pAdAn prakSAlitavAn tarhi yuSmAkamapi parasparaM pAdaprakSAlanam ucitam|
15 For I gave to you an example, that, according as I did to you, you also may do;
ahaM yuSmAn prati yathA vyavAharaM yuSmAn tathA vyavaharttum ekaM panthAnaM darzitavAn|
16 truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his lord, nor an apostle greater than he who sent him;
ahaM yuSmAnatiyathArthaM vadAmi, prabho rdAso na mahAn prerakAcca prerito na mahAn|
17 if you have known these things, you are blessed if you may do them;
imAM kathAM viditvA yadi tadanusArataH karmmANi kurutha tarhi yUyaM dhanyA bhaviSyatha|
18 I do not speak concerning you all; I have known whom I chose for Myself; but that the Writing may be fulfilled: He who is eating the bread with Me, lifted up his heel against Me.
sarvveSu yuSmAsu kathAmimAM kathayAmi iti na, ye mama manonItAstAnahaM jAnAmi, kintu mama bhakSyANi yo bhuGkte matprANaprAtikUlyataH| utthApayati pAdasya mUlaM sa eSa mAnavaH|yadetad dharmmapustakasya vacanaM tadanusAreNAvazyaM ghaTiSyate|
19 From this time I tell you, before its coming to pass, that, when it may come to pass, you may believe that I AM;
ahaM sa jana ityatra yathA yuSmAkaM vizvAso jAyate tadarthaM etAdRzaghaTanAt pUrvvam ahamidAnIM yuSmabhyamakathayam|
20 truly, truly, I say to you, he who is receiving whomsoever I may send, receives Me; and he who is receiving Me, receives Him who sent Me.”
ahaM yuSmAnatIva yathArthaM vadAmi, mayA preritaM janaM yo gRhlAti sa mAmeva gRhlAti yazca mAM gRhlAti sa matprerakaM gRhlAti|
21 Having said these things, Jesus was troubled in the spirit, and testified and said, “Truly, truly, I say to you that one of you will deliver Me up”;
etAM kathAM kathayitvA yIzu rduHkhI san pramANaM dattvA kathitavAn ahaM yuSmAnatiyathArthaM vadAmi yuSmAkam eko jano mAM parakareSu samarpayiSyati|
22 the disciples were looking, therefore, at one another, doubting concerning of whom He speaks.
tataH sa kamuddizya kathAmetAM kathitavAn ityatra sandigdhAH ziSyAH parasparaM mukhamAlokayituM prArabhanta|
23 And there was one of His disciples reclining in the bosom of Jesus, whom Jesus was loving;
tasmin samaye yIzu ryasmin aprIyata sa ziSyastasya vakSaHsthalam avAlambata|
24 Simon Peter, then, beckons to this one, to inquire who he may be concerning whom He speaks,
zimonpitarastaM saGketenAvadat, ayaM kamuddizya kathAmetAm kathayatIti pRccha|
25 and that one having leaned back on the breast of Jesus, responds to Him, “Lord, who is it?”
tadA sa yIzo rvakSaHsthalam avalambya pRSThavAn, he prabho sa janaH kaH?
26 Jesus answers, “It is that one to whom I, having dipped the morsel, will give it”; and having dipped the morsel, He gives [it] to Judas of Simon, Iscariot.
tato yIzuH pratyavadad ekakhaNDaM pUpaM majjayitvA yasmai dAsyAmi saeva saH; pazcAt pUpakhaNDamekaM majjayitvA zimonaH putrAya ISkariyotIyAya yihUdai dattavAn|
27 And after the morsel, then Satan entered into that one. Jesus, therefore, says to him, “What you do—do quickly”;
tasmin datte sati zaitAn tamAzrayat; tadA yIzustam avadat tvaM yat kariSyasi tat kSipraM kuru|
28 and none of those reclining to eat knew for what intent He said this to him,
kintu sa yenAzayena tAM kathAmakathAyat tam upaviSTalokAnAM kopi nAbudhyata;
29 for certain [of them] were thinking, since Judas had the bag, that Jesus says to him, “Buy what we have need of for the celebration”; or that he may give something to the poor;
kintu yihUdAH samIpe mudrAsampuTakasthiteH kecid ittham abudhyanta pArvvaNAsAdanArthaM kimapi dravyaM kretuM vA daridrebhyaH kiJcid vitarituM kathitavAn|
30 having received, therefore, the morsel, that one immediately went forth, and it was night.
tadA pUpakhaNDagrahaNAt paraM sa tUrNaM bahiragacchat; rAtrizca samupasyitA|
31 When, therefore, he went forth, Jesus says, “Now was the Son of Man glorified, and God was glorified in Him;
yihUde bahirgate yIzurakathayad idAnIM mAnavasutasya mahimA prakAzate tenezvarasyApi mahimA prakAzate|
32 if God was glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself; indeed, He will immediately glorify Him.
yadi tenezvarasya mahimA prakAzate tarhIzvaropi svena tasya mahimAnaM prakAzayiSyati tUrNameva prakAzayiSyati|
33 Little children, yet a little [while] am I with you; you will seek Me, and according as I said to the Jews, I also say to you now: To where I go away, you are not able to come.
he vatsA ahaM yuSmAbhiH sArddhaM kiJcitkAlamAtram Ase, tataH paraM mAM mRgayiSyadhve kintvahaM yatsthAnaM yAmi tatsthAnaM yUyaM gantuM na zakSyatha, yAmimAM kathAM yihUdIyebhyaH kathitavAn tathAdhunA yuSmabhyamapi kathayAmi|
34 A new command I give to you, that you love one another; according as I loved you, that you also love one another;
yUyaM parasparaM prIyadhvam ahaM yuSmAsu yathA prIye yUyamapi parasparam tathaiva prIyadhvaM, yuSmAn imAM navInAm AjJAm AdizAmi|
35 in this will all know that you are My disciples, if you may have love one to another.”
tenaiva yadi parasparaM prIyadhve tarhi lakSaNenAnena yUyaM mama ziSyA iti sarvve jJAtuM zakSyanti|
36 Simon Peter says to Him, “Lord, to where do You go away?” Jesus answered him, “To where I go away, you are not able now to follow Me, but afterward you will follow Me.”
zimonapitaraH pRSThavAn he prabho bhavAn kutra yAsyati? tato yIzuH pratyavadat, ahaM yatsthAnaM yAmi tatsthAnaM sAmprataM mama pazcAd gantuM na zaknoSi kintu pazcAd gamiSyasi|
37 Peter says to Him, “Lord, why am I not able to follow You now? I will lay down my life for You”;
tadA pitaraH pratyuditavAn, he prabho sAmprataM kuto hetostava pazcAd gantuM na zaknomi? tvadarthaM prANAn dAtuM zaknomi|
38 Jesus answered him, “You will lay down your life for Me? Truly, truly, I say to you, a rooster will not crow until you may deny Me three times.”
tato yIzuH pratyuktavAn mannimittaM kiM prANAn dAtuM zaknoSi? tvAmahaM yathArthaM vadAmi, kukkuTaravaNAt pUrvvaM tvaM tri rmAm apahnoSyase|
