< John 1 >

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God;
Adau vAda AsIt sa cha vAda IshvareNa sArdhamAsIt sa vAdaH svayamIshvara eva|
2 this One was in the beginning with God;
sa AdAvIshvareNa sahAsIt|
3 all things happened through Him, and without Him not even one thing happened that has happened.
tena sarvvaM vastu sasR^ije sarvveShu sR^iShTavastuShu kimapi vastu tenAsR^iShTaM nAsti|
4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men,
sa jIvanasyAkAraH, tachcha jIvanaM manuShyANAM jyotiH
5 and the light shined in the darkness, and the darkness did not perceive it.
tajjyotirandhakAre prachakAshe kintvandhakArastanna jagrAha|
6 There came a man—having been sent from God—whose name [is] John,
yohan nAmaka eko manuja IshvareNa preShayA nchakre|
7 this one came for testimony, that he might testify about the Light, that all might believe through him;
tadvArA yathA sarvve vishvasanti tadarthaM sa tajjyotiShi pramANaM dAtuM sAkShisvarUpo bhUtvAgamat,
8 that one was not the Light, but—that he might testify about the Light.
sa svayaM tajjyoti rna kintu tajjyotiShi pramANaM dAtumAgamat|
9 He was the true Light, which enlightens every man, coming into the world;
jagatyAgatya yaH sarvvamanujebhyo dIptiM dadAti tadeva satyajyotiH|
10 He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him:
sa yajjagadasR^ijat tanmadya eva sa AsIt kintu jagato lokAstaM nAjAnan|
11 He came to [His] own, and [His] own did not receive Him;
nijAdhikAraM sa AgachChat kintu prajAstaM nAgR^ihlan|
12 but as many as received Him, to them He gave authority to become sons of God—to those believing in His Name,
tathApi ye ye tamagR^ihlan arthAt tasya nAmni vyashvasan tebhya Ishvarasya putrA bhavitum adhikAram adadAt|
13 who were begotten, not of blood, nor of will of flesh, nor of will of man, but of God.
teShAM janiH shoNitAnna shArIrikAbhilAShAnna mAnavAnAmichChAto na kintvIshvarAdabhavat|
14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, glory as of [the] only begotten of [the] Father, full of grace and truth.
sa vAdo manuShyarUpeNAvatIryya satyatAnugrahAbhyAM paripUrNaH san sArdham asmAbhi rnyavasat tataH pituradvitIyaputrasya yogyo yo mahimA taM mahimAnaM tasyApashyAma|
15 John testifies concerning Him, and has cried, saying, “This was He of whom I said, He who is coming after me has come before me, for He was before me.”
tato yohanapi prachAryya sAkShyamidaM dattavAn yo mama pashchAd AgamiShyati sa matto gurutaraH; yato matpUrvvaM sa vidyamAna AsIt; yadartham ahaM sAkShyamidam adAM sa eShaH|
16 And we all received out of His fullness, and grace for grace;
apara ncha tasya pUrNatAyA vayaM sarvve kramashaH kramashonugrahaM prAptAH|
17 for the Law was given through Moses, the grace and the truth came through Jesus Christ.
mUsAdvArA vyavasthA dattA kintvanugrahaH satyatva ncha yIshukhrIShTadvArA samupAtiShThatAM|
18 No one has ever seen God; the only begotten God who is on the bosom of the Father—He has expounded [Him].
kopi manuja IshvaraM kadApi nApashyat kintu pituH kroDastho. advitIyaH putrastaM prakAshayat|
19 And this is the testimony of John when the Jews sent priests and Levites out of Jerusalem, that they might question him, “Who are you?”
tvaM kaH? iti vAkyaM preShTuM yadA yihUdIyalokA yAjakAn levilokAMshcha yirUshAlamo yohanaH samIpe preShayAmAsuH,
20 And he confessed and did not deny, and confessed, “I am not the Christ.”
tadA sa svIkR^itavAn nApahnUtavAn nAham abhiShikta itya NgIkR^itavAn|
21 And they questioned him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” And he says, “I am not.” “Are you the prophet?” And he answered, “No.”
tadA te. apR^ichChan tarhi ko bhavAn? kiM eliyaH? sovadat na; tataste. apR^ichChan tarhi bhavAn sa bhaviShyadvAdI? sovadat nAhaM saH|
22 Then they said to him, “Who are you, that we may give an answer to those sending us? What do you say concerning yourself?”
tadA te. apR^ichChan tarhi bhavAn kaH? vayaM gatvA prerakAn tvayi kiM vakShyAmaH? svasmin kiM vadasi?
23 He said, “I [am] a voice of one crying in the wilderness: Make straight the way of the LORD, as Isaiah the prophet said.”
tadA sovadat| parameshasya panthAnaM pariShkuruta sarvvataH| itIdaM prAntare vAkyaM vadataH kasyachidravaH| kathAmimAM yasmin yishayiyo bhaviShyadvAdI likhitavAn soham|
24 And those sent were of the Pharisees,
ye preShitAste phirUshilokAH|
25 and they questioned him and said to him, “Why, then, do you immerse, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?”
tadA te. apR^ichChan yadi nAbhiShiktosi eliyosi na sa bhaviShyadvAdyapi nAsi cha, tarhi lokAn majjayasi kutaH?
26 John answered them, saying, “I immerse in water, but in the midst of you has stood He whom you have not known, it is this One who is coming after me, who has been before me,
tato yohan pratyavochat, toye. ahaM majjayAmIti satyaM kintu yaM yUyaM na jAnItha tAdR^isha eko jano yuShmAkaM madhya upatiShThati|
27 of whom I am not worthy that I may loose the strap of His sandal.”
sa matpashchAd Agatopi matpUrvvaM varttamAna AsIt tasya pAdukAbandhanaM mochayitumapi nAhaM yogyosmi|
28 These things came to pass in Bethabara, beyond the Jordan, where John was immersing.
yarddananadyAH pArasthabaithabArAyAM yasminsthAne yohanamajjayat tasmina sthAne sarvvametad aghaTata|
29 On the next day John sees Jesus coming to him and says, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who is taking away the sin of the world;
pare. ahani yohan svanikaTamAgachChantaM yishuM vilokya prAvochat jagataH pApamochakam Ishvarasya meShashAvakaM pashyata|
30 this is He concerning whom I said, After me comes a Man who has come before me, because He was before me:
yo mama pashchAdAgamiShyati sa matto gurutaraH, yato hetormatpUrvvaM so. avarttata yasminnahaM kathAmimAM kathitavAn sa evAyaM|
31 and I did not know Him, but that He might be revealed to Israel, because of this I came immersing in water.”
aparaM nAhamenaM pratyabhij nAtavAn kintu isrAyellokA enaM yathA parichinvanti tadabhiprAyeNAhaM jale majjayitumAgachCham|
32 And John testified, saying, “I have seen the Spirit coming down out of Heaven as a dove, and [that] One remained on Him;
punashcha yohanaparamekaM pramANaM datvA kathitavAn vihAyasaH kapotavad avatarantamAtmAnam asyoparyyavatiShThantaM cha dR^iShTavAnaham|
33 and I did not know Him, but He who sent me to immerse in water, He said to me, On whomsoever you may see the Spirit coming down, and remaining on Him, this is He who is immersing in the Holy Spirit;
nAhamenaM pratyabhij nAtavAn iti satyaM kintu yo jale majjayituM mAM prairayat sa evemAM kathAmakathayat yasyoparyyAtmAnam avatarantam avatiShThanta ncha drakShayasi saeva pavitre Atmani majjayiShyati|
34 and I have seen, and have testified, that this is the Son of God.”
avastannirIkShyAyam Ishvarasya tanaya iti pramANaM dadAmi|
35 On the next day, again, John was standing, and two of his disciples,
pare. ahani yohan dvAbhyAM shiShyAbhyAM sArddheM tiShThan
36 and having looked on Jesus walking, he says, “Behold, the Lamb of God”;
yishuM gachChantaM vilokya gaditavAn, Ishvarasya meShashAvakaM pashyataM|
37 and the two disciples heard him speaking, and they followed Jesus.
imAM kathAM shrutvA dvau shiShyau yIshoH pashchAd IyatuH|
38 And Jesus having turned, and having beheld them following, says to them, “What do you seek?” And they said to Him, “Rabbi” (which is, being interpreted, Teacher), “where do You remain?”
tato yIshuH parAvR^itya tau pashchAd AgachChantau dR^iShTvA pR^iShTavAn yuvAM kiM gaveshayathaH? tAvapR^ichChatAM he rabbi arthAt he guro bhavAn kutra tiShThati?
39 He says to them, “Come and see”; they came and saw where He remains, and they remained with Him that day and the hour was about the tenth.
tataH sovAdit etya pashyataM| tato divasasya tR^itIyapraharasya gatatvAt tau taddinaM tasya sa Nge. asthAtAM|
40 Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who heard from John, and followed Him;
yau dvau yohano vAkyaM shrutvA yishoH pashchAd AgamatAM tayoH shimonpitarasya bhrAtA AndriyaH
41 this one first finds his own brother Simon and says to him, “We have found the Messiah,” (which is, being interpreted, Anointed One),
sa itvA prathamaM nijasodaraM shimonaM sAkShAtprApya kathitavAn vayaM khrIShTam arthAt abhiShiktapuruShaM sAkShAtkR^itavantaH|
42 and he brought him to Jesus: and having looked on him, Jesus says, “You are Simon, the son of Jonas, you will be called Cephas,” (which is interpreted, A rock).
pashchAt sa taM yishoH samIpam Anayat| tadA yIshustaM dR^iShTvAvadat tvaM yUnasaH putraH shimon kintu tvannAmadheyaM kaiphAH vA pitaraH arthAt prastaro bhaviShyati|
43 On the next day He willed to go forth to Galilee, and He finds Philip and says to him, “Follow Me.”
pare. ahani yIshau gAlIlaM gantuM nishchitachetasi sati philipanAmAnaM janaM sAkShAtprApyAvochat mama pashchAd AgachCha|
44 And Philip was from Bethsaida, of the city of Andrew and Peter;
baitsaidAnAmni yasmin grAme pitarAndriyayorvAsa AsIt tasmin grAme tasya philipasya vasatirAsIt|
45 Philip finds Nathanael and says to him, “Him of whom Moses wrote in the Law, and the Prophets, we have found, Jesus the Son of Joseph, who [is] from Nazareth!”
pashchAt philipo nithanelaM sAkShAtprApyAvadat mUsA vyavasthA granthe bhaviShyadvAdinAM grantheShu cha yasyAkhyAnaM likhitamAste taM yUShaphaH putraM nAsaratIyaM yIshuM sAkShAd akArShma vayaM|
46 And Nathanael said to him, “Is any good thing able to be out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.”
tadA nithanel kathitavAn nAsarannagarAta kiM kashchiduttama utpantuM shaknoti? tataH philipo. avochat etya pashya|
47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him, and He says concerning him, “Behold, truly an Israelite, in whom is no guile”;
apara ncha yIshuH svasya samIpaM tam AgachChantaM dR^iShTvA vyAhR^itavAn, pashyAyaM niShkapaTaH satya isrAyellokaH|
48 Nathanael says to Him, “From where do You know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Before Philip’s calling you, being under the fig tree, I saw you.”
tataH sovadad, bhavAn mAM kathaM pratyabhijAnAti? yIshuravAdIt philipasya AhvAnAt pUrvvaM yadA tvamuDumbarasya tarormUle. asthAstadA tvAmadarsham|
49 Nathanael answered and says to Him, “Rabbi, You are the Son of God, You are the King of Israel.”
nithanel achakathat, he guro bhavAn nitAntam Ishvarasya putrosi, bhavAn isrAyelvaMshasya rAjA|
50 Jesus answered and said to him, “Because I said to you, I saw you under the fig tree, you believe; you will see greater things than these”;
tato yIshu rvyAharat, tvAmuDumbarasya pAdapasya mUle dR^iShTavAnAhaM mamaitasmAdvAkyAt kiM tvaM vyashvasIH? etasmAdapyAshcharyyANi kAryyANi drakShyasi|
51 and He says to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, from now on you will see Heaven opened, and the messengers of God going up and coming down on the Son of Man.”
anyachchAvAdId yuShmAnahaM yathArthaM vadAmi, itaH paraM mochite meghadvAre tasmAnmanujasUnunA Ishvarasya dUtagaNam avarohantamArohanta ncha drakShyatha|
