Job 15
1 And Eliphaz the Temanite answers and says:
Elifaz il Temanita prese a dire:
2 “Does a wise man answer [with] vain knowledge? And fill his belly [with] an east wind?
Potrebbe il saggio rispondere con ragioni campate in aria e riempirsi il ventre di vento d'oriente?
3 To reason with a word not useful? And speeches—no profit in them?
Si difende egli con parole senza costrutto e con discorsi inutili?
4 Indeed, you make reverence void, and diminish meditation before God.
Tu anzi distruggi la religione e abolisci la preghiera innanzi a Dio.
5 For your mouth teaches your iniquity, And you choose the tongue of the cunning.
Sì, la tua malizia suggerisce alla tua bocca e scegli il linguaggio degli astuti.
6 Your mouth declares you wicked, and not I, And your lips testify against you.
Non io, ma la tua bocca ti condanna e le tue labbra attestano contro di te.
7 Are you the first man born? And were you formed before the heights?
Sei forse tu il primo uomo che è nato, o, prima dei monti, sei venuto al mondo?
8 Do you hear of the secret counsel of God? And withdraw wisdom to you?
Hai avuto accesso ai segreti consigli di Dio e ti sei appropriata tu solo la sapienza?
9 What have you known, and we do not know? [What] do you understand, and it is not with us?
Che cosa sai tu che noi non sappiamo? Che cosa capisci che da noi non si comprenda?
10 Both the gray-headed And the very aged [are] among us—Greater than your father [in] days.
Anche fra di noi c'è il vecchio e c'è il canuto più di tuo padre, carico d'anni.
11 Are the comforts of God too few for you? And a gentle word [is] with you,
Poca cosa sono per te le consolazioni di Dio e una parola moderata a te rivolta?
12 Why does your heart take you away? And why are your eyes high?
Perché il tuo cuore ti trasporta e perché fanno cenni i tuoi occhi,
13 Do you turn your spirit against God? And have brought out words from your mouth:
quando volgi contro Dio il tuo animo e fai uscire tali parole dalla tua bocca?
14 What [is] man that he is pure, And that he is righteous, one born of woman?
Che cos'è l'uomo perché si ritenga puro, perché si dica giusto un nato di donna?
15 Behold, He puts no credence in His holy ones, And the heavens have not been pure in His eyes.
Ecco, neppure dei suoi santi egli ha fiducia e i cieli non sono puri ai suoi occhi;
16 Also—surely abominable and filthy Is man drinking perverseness as water.
quanto meno un essere abominevole e corrotto, l'uomo, che beve l'iniquità come acqua.
17 I show you—listen to me—And this I have seen and declare,
Voglio spiegartelo, ascoltami, ti racconterò quel che ho visto,
18 Which the wise declare—And have not hid—from their fathers.
quello che i saggi riferiscono, non celato ad essi dai loro padri;
19 To them alone was the land given, And a stranger did not pass over into their midst:
a essi soli fu concessa questa terra, né straniero alcuno era passato in mezzo a loro.
20 All [the] days of the wicked he is paining himself, And few years have been laid up for the terrible one.
Per tutti i giorni della vita il malvagio si tormenta; sono contati gli anni riservati al violento.
21 A fearful voice [is] in his ears, In peace a destroyer comes to him.
Voci di spavento gli risuonano agli orecchi e in piena pace si vede assalito dal predone.
22 He does not believe to return from darkness, And he watches for the sword.
Non crede di potersi sottrarre alle tenebre, egli si sente destinato alla spada.
23 He is wandering for bread: Where [is] it? He has known that ready at his hand Is a day of darkness.
Destinato in pasto agli avvoltoi, sa che gli è preparata la rovina.
24 Adversity and distress terrify him, They prevail over him as a king ready for a boaster.
Un giorno tenebroso lo spaventa, la miseria e l'angoscia l'assalgono come un re pronto all'attacco,
25 For he stretched out his hand against God, And against the Mighty he makes himself mighty.
perché ha steso contro Dio la sua mano, ha osato farsi forte contro l'Onnipotente;
26 He runs to Him with a neck, With thick bosses of his shields.
correva contro di lui a testa alta, al riparo del curvo spessore del suo scudo;
27 For he has covered his face with his fat, And makes vigor over [his] confidence.
poiché aveva la faccia coperta di grasso e pinguedine intorno ai suoi fianchi.
28 And he inhabits cities cut off, houses not dwelt in, That have been ready to become heaps.
Avrà dimora in città diroccate, in case dove non si abita più, destinate a diventare macerie.
29 He is not rich, nor does his wealth rise, Nor does he stretch out their continuance on earth.
Non arricchirà, non durerà la sua fortuna, non metterà radici sulla terra.
30 He does not turn aside from darkness, A flame dries up his tender branch, And he turns aside at the breath of His mouth!
Alle tenebre non sfuggirà, la vampa seccherà i suoi germogli e dal vento sarà involato il suo frutto.
31 Do not let him put credence in vanity, He has been deceived, For vanity is his exchange.
Non confidi in una vanità fallace, perché sarà una rovina.
32 It is not completed in his day, And his bending branch is not green.
La sua fronda sarà tagliata prima del tempo e i suoi rami non rinverdiranno più.
33 He shakes off his unripe fruit as a vine, And casts off his blossom as an olive.
Sarà spogliato come vigna della sua uva ancor acerba e getterà via come ulivo i suoi fiori,
34 For the company of the profane [is] barren, And fire has consumed tents of bribery.
poiché la stirpe dell'empio è sterile e il fuoco divora le tende dell'uomo venale.
35 To conceive misery, and to bear iniquity, Even their heart prepares deceit.”
Concepisce malizia e genera sventura e nel suo seno alleva delusione.
