Jeremiah 46
1 That which has been the word of YHWH to Jeremiah the prophet concerning the nations,
Het woord van Jahweh tegen de volken, dat tot den profeet Jeremias werd gericht.
2 for Egypt, concerning the force of Pharaoh-Necho king of Egypt, that has been by the Euphrates River, in Carchemish, that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon has struck, in the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah:
Over Egypte. Over het leger van den Farao Neko, den koning van Egypte, dat aan de Eufraat bij Karkemisj stond, en dat Nabukodonosor, de koning van Babel, in het vierde jaar van Jojakim, den zoon van Josias en koning van Juda, heeft verslagen.
3 “Set shield and buckler in array, And draw near to battle.
Klaar met schild en rondas; op, tot de strijd,
4 Gird the horses, and go up, you horsemen, And station yourselves with helmets, Polish the javelins, put on the coats of mail.
De paarden gespannen, de rossen bestegen; In het gelid, de helmen op, De lansen gewet, de pantsers aan!
5 Why have I seen them dismayed [and] turned backward? And their mighty ones are beaten down, And they have fled [to] a refuge, And did not turn their face, Fear [is] all around—a declaration of YHWH.
Wat: ze beven, ze wijken; Hun helden worden verslagen, Ze vluchten, zonder om te zien? Verschrikking alom, is de godsspraak van Jahweh!
6 The swift do not flee, nor do the mighty escape, Northward, by the side of the Euphrates River, They have stumbled and fallen.
Zelfs de vlugge kan niet ontsnappen, De held zich niet redden; In het noorden, aan de oever van de Eufraat, Wankelen ze, en storten ze neer!
7 Who is this? He comes up as a flood, His waters shake themselves as rivers!
Wie golft daar aan als de Nijl, Als stromen met bruisende wateren?
8 Egypt comes up as a flood, And the waters shake themselves as rivers. And he says, I go up; I cover the land, I destroy the city and the inhabitants in it.
Egypte golft aan als de Nijl, Als stromen met klotsende golven! Het roept: Omhoog wil ik stijgen, Om de aarde te overstromen; Ik wil steden vernielen, Met de bewoners er in.
9 Go up, you horses; and boast yourselves, you chariots, And go forth, you mighty, Cush and Phut handling the shield, And Lud handling—treading the bow.
Paarden vooruit; wagens raast door, De helden naar voren: Ethiopiërs en Poetiërs, het schild in de hand, Lydiërs, de bogen gespannen en gericht!
10 And that day [is] to Lord YHWH of Hosts A day of vengeance, To be avenged of His adversaries, And the sword has devoured, and been satisfied, And it has been watered from their blood, For a sacrifice [is] to Lord YHWH of Hosts, In the land of the north, by the Euphrates River.
Maar dit is de dag van den Heer, Van Jahweh der heirscharen: Een dag van vergelding, Om zich te wreken op zijn bestrijders! Het zwaard verslindt, tot zijn honger gestild is, Het drinkt zich zat aan hun bloed; Want Jahweh richt een offer aan In het land van het noorden, aan de Eufraat.
11 Go up to Gilead, and take balm, O virgin daughter of Egypt, You have multiplied medicines in vain, There is no healing for you.
Trek op naar Gilad, om balsem te halen, Jonkvrouw, dochter van Egypte! Vergeefs verspilt gij medicijnen; Geen genezing voor u.
12 Nations have heard of your shame, And your cry has filled the land, For the mighty stumbled on the mighty, Together they have fallen—both of them!”
De volken horen uw schande, De aarde is vol van uw klagen; Want de ene held is over den ander gestruikeld, En beiden zijn ze gevallen!
13 The word that YHWH has spoken to Jeremiah the prophet concerning the coming in of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, to strike the land of Egypt:
Het woord, dat Jahweh tot den profeet Jeremias sprak over de veldtocht van Nabukodonosor, den koning van Babel, om het land van Egypte te teisteren!
14 “Declare in Egypt, and sound in Migdol, And sound in Noph, and in Tahpanhes, say, Stand firm and prepare yourself, For a sword has devoured around you,
Verkondigt het in Egypte, meldt het in Migdol, Bericht het in Nof en Tachpanches; Roept: Stel u te weer, en houd u gereed, Want het zwaard verslindt om u heen!
15 Why has your bull been swept away? He has not stood, because YHWH thrust him away.
Wat: uw sterke gevallen, hij houdt geen stand? Neen, Jahweh heeft hem neergestoten.
16 He has multiplied the stumbling, Indeed, one has fallen on his neighbor, And they say: Rise, and we return to our people, And to the land of our birth, Because of the oppressing sword.
Ook zijn huurtroepen struikelen en vallen, De een op den ander. Ze roepen: Voort, terug naar ons volk, Naar ons geboorteland voor het moordende zwaard!
17 They have cried there: Pharaoh king of Egypt [is] a desolation, The appointed time has passed by.
Noemt Farao, den koning van Egypte: "Lawaai, dat zijn tijd liet voorbijgaan!"
18 [As] I live—an affirmation of the King, YHWH of Hosts [is] His Name, Surely as Tabor [is] among mountains, And as Carmel by the sea—he comes in,
Zo waar Ik leef, is de godsspraak des Konings, Jahweh der heirscharen is zijn Naam: Als een Tabor onder de bergen, Als een Karmel aan zee rukt er een aan.
19 Make goods for yourself for removal, O inhabitant, daughter of Egypt, For Noph becomes a desolation, And has been burned up, without inhabitant.
Maak uw pak voor de ballingschap klaar, Bevolking, dochter van Egypte; Want Nof zal een wildernis worden, Vernield en ontvolkt.
20 Egypt [is] a very beautiful heifer, Destruction comes into her from the north.
Egypte is een prachtige koe: Maar een horzel uit het noorden valt op haar aan;
21 Even her hired ones in her midst [are] as calves of the stall, For even they have turned, They have fled together, they have not stood, For the day of their calamity has come on them, The time of their inspection.
Ook op haar troepen in haar land Als op vetgemeste kalveren. Waarachtig, allen lopen ze weg, Ze vluchten heen, en houden geen stand; Want hun onheilsdag is gekomen, De tijd van hun straf!
22 Its voice goes on as a serpent, For they go with a force, And they have come in to her with axes, As hewers of trees.
Hoort, als een sissende slang Schuiven ze voort langs het strand; Met bijlen gewapend, Trekken ze als houthakkers op haar af.
23 They have cut down her forest, A declaration of YHWH, For it is not searched, For they have been more than the grasshopper, And they have no numbering.
Ze vellen haar woud, is de godsspraak van Jahweh, Hoe ondoordringbaar het is; Want ze zijn talrijker nog dan een sprinkhanen-zwerm, Ze zijn niet te tellen.
24 The daughter of Egypt has been ashamed, She has been given into the hand of the people of the north.
De dochter van Egypte wordt te schande gemaakt, Overgeleverd aan het volk uit het noorden:
25 YHWH of Hosts, God of Israel, has said: Behold, I am seeing after Amon of No, And after Pharaoh, and after Egypt, And after her gods, and after her kings, And after Pharaoh, and after those trusting in him,
Jahweh der heirscharen, Israëls God heeft het gezegd! Ik ga Mij wreken op Amon in No, Op Farao en op Egypte, Op zijn goden en vorsten, Op allen, die op hem vertrouwen!
26 And I have given them into the hand of those seeking their life, And into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, And into the hand of his servants, And afterward it is inhabited, As [in] days of old—a declaration of YHWH.
Ik lever ze uit aan wie hun leven belagen, Aan Nabukodonosor, den koning van Babel, en zijn vazallen. Eerst later wordt het weer vredig bewoond Als in vroegere dagen: is de godsspraak van Jahweh!
27 And you, you do not fear, My servant Jacob, Nor [are] you dismayed, O Israel, For behold, I am saving you from afar—And your seed from the land of their captivity, And Jacob has turned back, And has been at rest, and been at ease, And there is none disturbing.
Jakob, mijn dienaar, wees niet bang, Israël, gij behoeft niet te vrezen; Want Ik ga u verlossen uit verre gewesten, Uw kroost uit het land hunner ballingschap. Jakob keert terug, en vindt weer zijn rust, Onbekommerd, door niemand verschrikt.
28 You do not fear, My servant Jacob, A declaration of YHWH, For I [am] with you, For I make an end of all the nations To where I have driven you, And I do not make an end of you, And I have reproved you in judgment, And do not entirely acquit you!”
Jakob, mijn dienaar, wees niet bang; want Ik ben met u, spreekt Jahweh! Ja, Ik ga alle volken vernielen, Waaronder Ik u heb verstrooid. Maar u zal Ik nimmer vernielen; Ik tuchtig u enkel, zoals ge verdient; Neen, Ik laat u niet ongestraft!
