< Jeremiah 36 >
1 And it comes to pass, in the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, this word has been to Jeremiah from YHWH, saying,
Pea naʻe hoko ʻo pehē ʻi hono fā ʻoe taʻu ʻo Sihoiakimi ko e foha ʻo Siosaia ko e tuʻi ʻo Siuta, naʻe hoko ʻae folofola ni kia Selemaia meia Sihova, ʻo pehē,
2 “Take a roll of a scroll to yourself, and you have written on it all the words that I have spoken to you concerning Israel, and concerning Judah, and concerning all the nations, from the day I spoke to you, from the days of Josiah, even to this day;
“Toʻo kiate koe ʻae tohi tākai, pea tohi ai ʻae ngaahi lea kotoa pē kuo u lea ʻaki kiate koe ki ʻIsileli, mo Siuta, mo e kakai kotoa pē, talu mei he ʻaho naʻaku fua lea ai kiate koe, ʻo fai mei he ngaahi ʻaho ʻo Siosaia, ʻio, ʻo aʻu ki he ʻaho ni.
3 perhaps the house of Israel so hears all the evil that I am thinking of doing to them, so that they each turn back from his evil way, and I have been propitious to their iniquity, and to their sin.”
Pea ʻe fanongo nai ʻe he fale ʻo Siuta ʻae kovi kotoa pē ʻaia ʻoku ou tokanga ke fai kiate kinautolu; koeʻuhi ke nau tafoki ʻae tangata taki taha mei hono hala kovi; koeʻuhi ke u fakamolemole ai ʻenau hia, pea mo ʻenau angahala.”
4 And Jeremiah calls Baruch son of Neriah, and Baruch writes from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of YHWH, that He has spoken to him, on a roll of a scroll.
Pea naʻe toki ui ʻe Selemaia kia Paluki ko e foha ʻo Nelia: pea tohi ʻe Paluki mei he ngutu ʻo Selemaia ʻi he tohi tākai ʻae ngaahi folofola kotoa pē ʻa Sihova, ʻaia naʻa ne folofolaʻaki kiate ia.
5 And Jeremiah commands Baruch, saying, “I am restrained, I am not able to enter the house of YHWH;
Pea naʻe fekau ʻe Selemaia, kia Paluki, ʻo pehē, “ʻOku ou nofo pōpula au, ʻoku ʻikai te u faʻa ʻalu ki he fale ʻo Sihova:
6 but you have entered—and you have read in the scroll that you have written from my mouth, the words of YHWH, in the ears of the people, in the house of YHWH, in the day of the fast, and you also read them in the ears of all Judah who are coming in from their cities;
Ko ia ke ke ʻalu koe, pea lau ʻi he tohi, ʻaia kuo ke tohi mei hoku ngutu, ʻae ngaahi folofola ʻa Sihova ke fanongo ʻae kakai ʻi he fale ʻo Sihova ʻi he ʻaho ʻaukai: pea ke ke lau foki ia ki Siuta kotoa pē, ʻakinautolu kuo haʻu mei honau ngaahi kolo.
7 perhaps their supplication so falls before YHWH, and they each turn back from his evil way, for the anger and the fury that YHWH has spoken concerning this people [is] great.”
Heiʻilo pe te nau fai ʻenau lotu ʻi he ʻao ʻo Sihova, pea taki taha tafoki mei hono hala kovi: he ʻoku lahi ʻae houhau mo e tuputāmaki kuo fakahā ʻe Sihova ki he kakai ni.”
8 And Baruch son of Neriah does according to all that Jeremiah the prophet commanded him, to read in the scroll the words of YHWH in the house of YHWH.
Pea naʻe fai ʻe Paluki ko e foha ʻo Nelia ʻo hangē ko e meʻa kotoa pē naʻe fekau ʻe Selemaia ko e palōfita kiate ia, ʻo ne lau ʻi he tohi ʻae ngaahi folofola ʻa Sihova ʻi he fale ʻo Sihova.
9 And it comes to pass, in the fifth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, in the ninth month, they proclaimed a fast before YHWH to all the people in Jerusalem, and to all the people who are coming in from cities of Judah to Jerusalem;
Pea naʻe hoko ʻo pehē ʻi hono nima taʻu ʻo Sihoiakimi ko e foha ʻo Siosaia ko e tuʻi ʻo Siuta, pea ʻi hono hiva māhina naʻa nau fanongonongo ʻae ʻaukai ʻi he ʻao ʻo Sihova ki he kakai kotoa pē ʻi Selūsalema, pea mo e kakai kotoa pē naʻe haʻu mei he ngaahi kolo ʻo Siuta ki Selūsalema.
10 and Baruch reads in the scroll the words of Jeremiah in the house of YHWH, in the chamber of Gemariah son of Shaphan the scribe, in the higher court, at the opening of the New Gate of the house of YHWH, in the ears of all the people.
Pea naʻe toki lau ʻe Paluki ʻi he tohi ʻae ngaahi lea ʻa Selemaia ʻi he fale ʻo Sihova, ʻi he potu fale ʻo Kemalia ko e foha ʻo Safani ko e tangata tohi, ʻi he potu lahi, ʻi he hūʻanga ʻoe matapā foʻou ʻoe fale ʻo Sihova, pea naʻe fanongo ʻae kakai kotoa pē.
11 And Michaiah son of Gemariah, son of Shaphan, hears all the words of YHWH from off the scroll,
Pea ʻi he fanongo ʻa Mikaia ko e foha ʻo Kemalia, ko e foha ʻo Safani, ki he ngaahi folofola kotoa pē ʻa Sihova mei he tohi,
12 and he goes down [to] the house of the king, to the chamber of the scribe, and behold, there all the heads are sitting: Elishama the scribe, and Delaiah son of Shemaiah, and Elnathan son of Acbor, and Gemariah son of Shaphan, and Zedekiah son of Hananiah, and all the heads.
Naʻe toki ʻalu hifo ia ki he fale ʻoe tuʻi, ki he potu fale ʻoe kau tangata tohi: pea vakai, ko e houʻeiki kotoa pē naʻe nofo ai, ko ʻIlisama ko e tangata tohi, mo Telaia, ko e foha ʻo Simaia, pea mo Elinatani ko e foha ʻo ʻAkipoa, mo Kemalia ko e foha ʻo Safani, mo Setikia ko e foha ʻo Hanania, pea mo e houʻeiki kotoa pē.
13 And Micaiah declares to them all the words that he has heard when Baruch reads in the scroll in the ears of the people;
Pea naʻe fakahā kiate kinautolu ʻe Mikaia ʻae ngaahi lea naʻa ne fanongo ki ai, ʻi he lau ʻe Paluki mei he tohi ʻi he telinga ʻoe kakai.
14 and all the heads send to Baruch, Jehudi son of Nethaniah, son of Shelemiah, son of Cushi, saying, “Take in your hand the scroll, which you have read in the ears of the people, and come.” And Baruch son of Neriah takes the scroll in his hand and comes to them,
Ko ia naʻe fekau ʻe he houʻeiki kotoa pē ʻa Sehuti, ko e foha ʻo Netania, ko e foha ʻo Selemaia, ko e foha ʻo Kusi, kia Paluki, ʻo pehē, “Toʻo ʻi ho nima ʻae tohi tākai ʻaia naʻa ke lau ʻi he telinga ʻoe kakai, pea ke ʻalu ange.” Pea naʻe toʻo ʻe Paluki ko e foha ʻo Nelia ʻae tohi tākai ʻi hono nima, pea haʻu kiate kinautolu.
15 and they say to him, “Please sit down and read it in our ears,” and Baruch reads [it] in their ears,
Pea naʻa nau pehē kiate ia, “Nofo ki lalo, pea lau ia ʻi homau telinga.” Pea naʻe lau ia ʻe Paluki ka nau fanongo.
16 and it comes to pass, when they hear all the words, they have been afraid—one to another—and say to Baruch, “We surely declare all these words to the king.”
Pea naʻe hoko ʻo pehē, ʻi heʻenau fanongo ki he ngaahi lea kotoa pē, naʻa nau fesiofaki ʻi he ilifia, pea nau pehē kia Paluki, “Ko e moʻoni te mau fakahā ki he tuʻi ʻae ngaahi lea ni kotoa pē.”
17 And they asked Baruch, saying, “Please declare to us, how did you write all these words from his mouth?”
Pea naʻa nau fehuʻi kia Paluki, ʻo pehē, “Fakahā mai eni, naʻa ke tohi fēfē ʻae ngaahi lea ni kotoa pē mei hono ngutu?”
18 And Baruch says to them, “He pronounces from his mouth all these words to me, and I am writing on the scroll with ink.”
Pea pehēange ʻe Paluki kiate kinautolu, “Naʻa ne lea ʻaki mei hono ngutu ʻae ngaahi lea ni kotoa pē kiate au, pea u tohi ʻaki ia ʻae vaitohi ʻi he tohi.”
19 And the heads say to Baruch, “Go, be hidden, you and Jeremiah, and let no one know where you [are].”
Pea naʻe pehē ʻe he houʻeiki kia Paluki, “ʻAlu, ʻo fufū koe, ʻa koe mo Selemaia; pea ʻoua naʻa ʻilo ʻe ha tangata pe ʻoku mo ʻi fē.”
20 And they go to the king, to the court, and they have laid up the scroll in the chamber of Elishama the scribe, and they declare all the words in the ears of the king.
Pea naʻa nau ʻalu ki he tuʻi ki he fale fakaʻeiʻeiki, ka nau tuku ʻae tohi tākai ʻi he potu ʻi ʻolunga ʻo ʻIlisama ko e tangata tohi, pea naʻe fakahā ʻae ngaahi lea kotoa pē ʻi he telinga ʻoe tuʻi.
21 And the king sends Jehudi to take the scroll, and he takes it out of the chamber of Elishama the scribe, and Jehudi reads it in the ears of the king, and in the ears of all the heads who are standing by the king;
Pea naʻe fekau ʻe he tuʻi kia Sehuti ke ʻomi ʻae tohi tākai: pea ne ʻomi ia mei he potu fale ʻo ʻIlisama ko e tangata tohi. Pea lau ia ʻe Sehuti ʻi he telinga ʻoe tuʻi, pea ʻi he telinga ʻoe houʻeiki kotoa pē naʻe tutuʻu fakataha mo e tuʻi.
22 and the king is sitting in the winter-house, in the ninth month, and the stove is burning before him,
Pea naʻe ʻafio ʻae tuʻi ʻi he fale mumū ʻi hono hiva ʻoe māhina: pea naʻe ʻi hono ʻao ʻae afi kakaha ʻi he matanavu.
23 and it comes to pass, when Jehudi reads three or four leaves, he cuts it out with the scribe’s knife, and has cast [it] into the fire that [is] on the stove, until the consumption of all the scroll by the fire that [is] on the stove.
Pea naʻe hoko ʻo pehē, hili hono lau ʻe Sehuti ʻae vahe ʻe tolu pe fā, naʻa ne hifi ʻaki ia ʻae hele, pea laku ia ki he afi naʻe ʻi he matanavu, pea fakaʻauha ʻae tohi tākai kotoa pē ʻi he afi naʻe ʻi he matanavu.
24 And the king and all his servants who are hearing all these words have not been afraid, nor torn their garments.
Ka naʻe ʻikai te nau manavahē, pe mahaehae honau kofu, ʻae tuʻi, pe ko ʻene kau tamaioʻeiki naʻe fanongo ki he ngaahi lea ni kotoa pē.
25 And also Elnathan, and Delaiah, and Gemariah have interceded with the king not to burn the scroll, and he has not listened to them.
Ka naʻe kole ʻa Elinatani mo Telaia mo Kemalia ki he tuʻi ke ʻoua naʻa tutu ʻae tohi tākai: ka naʻe ʻikai te ne fie fanongo kiate kinautolu.
26 And the king commands Jerahmeel son of Hammelek, and Seraiah son of Azriel, and Shelemiah son of Abdeel, to take Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet, and YHWH hides them.
Ka naʻe fekau ʻe he tuʻi kia Silamili ko e foha ʻo Hameleki, pea mo Selaia ko e foha ʻo ʻAsilieli, pea mo Selemaia ko e foha ʻo ʻApitili, ke puke ʻa Paluki ko e tangata tohi mo Selemaia ko e palōfita: ka naʻe fufū ʻakinaua ʻe Sihova.
27 And there is a word of YHWH to Jeremiah—after the king’s burning the scroll, even the words that Baruch has written from the mouth of Jeremiah—saying:
Pea naʻe toki hoko ʻae folofola ʻa Sihova kia Selemaia, hili hono tutu ʻae tohi tākai ʻe he tuʻi, pea mo e ngaahi lea ʻaia naʻe tohi ʻe Paluki mei he ngutu ʻo Selemaia ʻo pehē;
28 “Turn, take another scroll to yourself, and write on it all the former words that were on the first scroll that Jehoiakim king of Judah burned,
“Ke ke toe toʻo ʻae tohi tākai ʻe taha, pea tohi ki ai ʻae ngaahi lea kotoa pē, ʻaia naʻe tuʻu ʻi he ʻuluaki tohi tākai, ʻaia naʻe tutu ʻe Sihoiakimi ko e tuʻi ʻo Siuta.
29 and say to Jehoiakim king of Judah, Thus said YHWH: You have burned this scroll, saying, Why have you written on it, saying, The king of Babylon surely comes in, and has destroyed this land, and caused man and beast to cease from it?
Pea te ke lea ʻo pehē kia Sihoiakimi ko e tuʻi ʻo Siuta, ‘ʻOku pehē ʻe Sihova; “Naʻa ke tutu ʻae tohi tākai ni, ʻo pehē, “Ko e hā naʻa ke tohi ai? ʻo pehē, ‘Ko e moʻoni ʻe haʻu ʻae tuʻi ʻo Papilone ʻo fakaʻauha ʻae fonua ni pea fakatangaʻi ʻae tangata pea mo e manu?’””
30 Therefore, thus said YHWH concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah: He has none sitting on the throne of David, and his carcass is cast out to heat by day, and to cold by night;
Ko ia ʻoku pehē ʻe Sihova kia Sihoiakimi ko e tuʻi ʻo Siuta; “ʻE ʻikai te ne maʻu ha taha ke nofo ʻi he nofoʻanga fakaʻeiʻeiki ʻo Tevita: pea ʻe lī atu hono ʻangaʻanga ki he pupuha ʻi he ʻaho, pea ki he momoko ʻi he pō.
31 and I have charged on him, and on his seed, and on his servants, their iniquity; and I have brought in on them, and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to the men of Judah, all the evil that I have spoken to them, and they did not listen.”
32 And Jeremiah has taken another scroll, and gives it to Baruch son of Neriah the scribe, and he writes on it from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of the scroll that Jehoiakim king of Judah has burned in the fire; and again there were added to them many words like these.
Pea naʻe toki toʻo ʻe Selemaia ʻae tohi tākai ʻe taha, pea foaki ia kia Paluki ko e tangata tohi, ko e foha ʻo Nelia; ʻaia naʻe tohi mei he ngutu ʻo Selemaia, ʻae ngaahi lea kotoa pē ʻoe tohi ʻaia naʻe tutu ʻi he afi ʻe Sihoiakimi ko e tuʻi ʻo Siuta: pea naʻe fakalahi ʻaki ʻae ngaahi lea pehē kiate kinautolu.
