James 4
1 From where [are] wars and fightings among you? [Is it] not from here, out of your passions warring in your members?
Woher kommen Streitereien und Kämpfe unter euch? Woher anders als aus euren Lüsten, die da streiten in euren Gliedern wider einander?
2 You desire, and do not have, [so] you murder; and you are zealous, and are not able to attain, [so] you fight and war; and you do not have, because of your not asking;
Ihr begehrt und könnt es nicht gewinnen, ihr neidet und eifert und könnt es nicht erlangen, ihr kämpft und streitet und habt es nicht, darum, daß ihr nicht bittet.
3 you ask, and you do not receive, because you ask badly, that you may spend [it] in your pleasures.
Ihr bittet und empfangt nicht, weil ihr für euch übel bittet, auf daß ihr es in euren Lüsten vergeuden könnt.
4 Adulterers and adulteresses! Have you not known that friendship of the world is enmity with God? Whoever, then, may intend to be a friend of the world, he is designated [as] an enemy of God.
Ihr Ehebrecher und Ehebrecherinnen, wißt ihr nicht, daß der Welt Freundschaft Gottes Feinschaft ist; wer nun der Welt Freund sein will, der wird Gottes Feind.
5 Or, do you think that the Writing says emptily, “The Spirit that has dwelt in us yearns with envy,”
Oder meint ihr, daß die Schrift umsonst spreche! Eifernd begehrt sie des Geistes, den Er in uns wohnen ließ.
6 but [God] gives greater grace, for this reason it says, “God sets Himself up against proud ones, and He gives grace to lowly ones.”
Er gibt aber größere Gnade; darum heißt es: Gott widersteht den Hoffärtigen, aber den Demütigen gibt Er Gnade.
7 Be subject, then, to God; stand up against the Devil, and he will flee from you;
So seid denn Gott untertänig. Widersteht dem Teufel, so flieht er von euch.
8 draw near to God, and He will draw near to you; cleanse hands, you sinners! And purify hearts, you split-souled!
Naht euch Gott, so naht Er Sich euch; reinigt die Hände, ihr Sünder, und haltet eure Herzen rein, ihr Wankelmütigen.
9 Be exceedingly afflicted, and mourn, and weep, let your laughter be turned to mourning, and the joy to heaviness;
Fühlt euer Elend, trauert und weint. Euer Lachen wandle sich in Klage und eure Freude in Betrübnis.
10 be made low before the LORD, and He will exalt you.
Demütigt euch vor dem Herrn, so wird Er euch erhöhen!
11 Do not speak against one another, brothers; he who is speaking against a brother, and is judging his brother, speaks against law, and judges law, and if you judge law, you are not a doer of law but a judge.
Redet einander nicht Übles nach, Brüder. Wer seinem Bruder Übles nachredet und seinen Bruder richtet, der redet wider das Gesetz und richtet das Gesetz. Wenn du aber das Gesetz richtest, so bist du kein Täter des Gesetzes, sondern Richter.
12 One is the lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy; you—who are you that judges the other?
Es ist nur ein Gesetzgeber, Der lossprechen und verdammen kann. Wer bist du aber, der du den anderen richtest?
13 Go, now, you who are saying, “Today and tomorrow we will go on to such a city, and will pass there one year, and traffic, and make gain,”
Wohlan nun ihr, die ihr sagt: Heute oder morgen wollen wir in die oder die Stadt gehen, wollen daselbst ein Jahr hantieren und gewinnen.
14 who does not know the thing of tomorrow; for what is your life? For it is a vapor that is appearing for a little [while], and then is vanishing;
Und ihr wißt doch nicht, wie es morgen steht; denn was ist euer Leben? Ein Dunst ist es, der eine kleine Weile erscheint und dann vergeht.
15 instead, you [ought] to say, “If the LORD may will, we will live, and do this or that”;
Ihr solltet vielmehr sagen: So der Herr will und wir am Leben bleiben, wollen wir dies oder das tun.
16 but now you glory in your pride; all such glorying is evil;
Nun aber rühmt ihr euch in eurem Übermut. All solches Rühmen aber ist vom Übel.
17 to him, then, knowing to do good, and not doing [it], it is sin to him.
Wer da weiß Gutes zu tun und tut es nicht, dem ist es Sünde.
