James 2
1 My brothers, do not hold the faith of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ in favor by appearance,
Mes frères, que votre foi en Jésus-Christ, notre glorieux Seigneur, soit exempte de toute acception de personnes.
2 for if there may come into your synagogue a man with gold ring, in radiant clothing, and there may also come in a poor man in vile clothing,
Supposez qu'il entre dans votre assemblée un homme portant un anneau d'or et des habits magnifiques, et qu'il y entre aussi un pauvre misérablement vêtu.
3 and you may look on him bearing the radiant clothing, and may say to him, “You—sit here well,” and may say to the poor man, “You—stand there,” or, “Sit here under my footstool,”
Si, tournant vos regards vers celui qui porte les habits magnifiques, vous lui dites: Toi, assieds-toi ici, à cette bonne place; et que vous disiez au pauvre: Toi, tiens-toi là debout, ou assieds-toi au-dessous de mon marchepied, —
4 you did not judge fully in yourselves, and became ill-reasoning judges.
n'établissez-vous pas en vous-mêmes des distinctions, et vos jugements ne sont-ils pas inspirés par de mauvaises pensées?
5 Listen, my beloved brothers, did God not choose the poor of this world, rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom that He promised to those loving Him?
Écoutez, mes frères bien-aimés: Dieu n'a-t-il pas choisi les pauvres selon le monde pour les rendre riches en la foi et héritiers du royaume qu'il a promis à ceux qui l'aiment?
6 But you dishonored the poor one. Do the rich not oppress you and themselves draw you to judgment-seats?
Et vous, vous avez méprisé le pauvre, alors que ce sont les riches qui vous oppriment et qui vous traînent devant les tribunaux;
7 Do they not themselves speak evil of the good Name having been called on you?
et ce sont eux aussi qui blasphèment le beau nom qui a été invoqué sur vous!
8 If, indeed, you fulfill royal law, according to the Writing: “You will love your neighbor as yourself,” you do well;
Sans doute, si vous accomplissez la loi royale, selon l'Écriture: «Tu aimeras ton prochain comme toi-même»— vous agissez bien.
9 but if you favor by appearance, you work sin, being convicted by the Law as transgressors;
Mais si vous faites acception de personnes, vous commettez un péché, et la loi vous condamne comme transgresseurs.
10 for whoever will keep the whole Law, but will stumble in one [point], he has become guilty of all;
Car celui qui observe la loi tout entière, mais qui en viole un seul commandement, est coupable comme s'il les avait tous violés.
11 for He who is saying, “You may not commit adultery,” also said, “You may not murder”; but if you will not commit adultery, but will commit murder, you have become a transgressor of law;
En effet, celui qui a dit: «Tu ne commettras point d'adultère» a dit aussi: «Tu ne tueras point.» Si donc tu ne commets pas d'adultère, mais que tu commettes un meurtre, tu es transgresseur de la loi.
12 thus, speak and so act as [one] about to be judged by a law of liberty,
Parlez et agissez comme devant être jugés par une loi de liberté.
13 for the judgment without mercy [is] to him having not done mercy, and mercy exults over judgment.
Le jugement est sans miséricorde pour celui qui n'a pas fait miséricorde; mais la miséricorde triomphe du jugement.
14 What [is] the profit, my brothers, if anyone may speak of having faith, but he may not have works? Is that faith able to save him?
Mes frères, que sert-il à un homme de dire qu'il a la foi, s'il n'a pas les oeuvres? Cette foi peut-elle le sauver?
15 And if a brother or sister may be naked, and may be destitute of daily food,
Si un frère ou une soeur sont dans le dénuement, s'ils manquent de la nourriture de chaque jour,
16 and anyone of you may say to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed, and be filled,” but may not give to them the things necessary for the body, what [is] the profit?
et que l'un de nous leur dise: Allez en paix, chauffez-vous, rassasiez-vous. — et cela, sans leur donner ce qui est nécessaire pour la vie du corps, — à quoi cela sert-il?
17 So also faith, if it may not have works, is dead by itself.
Il en est de même de la foi: si elle ne produit pas d'oeuvres, elle est morte en elle-même.
18 But someone may say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without works, and I will show you my faith out of works.
Ou bien encore, quelqu'un dira; Tu as la foi, et moi, j'ai les oeuvres. Montre-moi ta foi sans les oeuvres, et moi, je te montrerai ma foi par mes oeuvres.
19 You believe that God is one; you do well! The demons also believe—and shudder!
Tu crois qu'il y a un seul Dieu, tu fais bien; les démons le croient aussi, et ils tremblent!
20 And do you wish to know, O vain man, that faith apart from works is dead?
Mais veux-tu te convaincre, ô homme vain, que la foi sans les oeuvres est inutile?
21 Was not our father Abraham considered righteous out of works, having brought up his son Isaac on the altar?
Abraham, notre père, ne fut-il pas justifié par les oeuvres, lorsqu'il lui offrit sur l'autel son fils Isaac?
22 Do you see that faith was working with his works, and faith was perfected out of the works?
Tu vois que la foi agissait avec ses oeuvres, et que par ses oeuvres sa foi fut rendue parfaite.
23 And the Writing was fulfilled that is saying, “And Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him for righteousness”; and, “Friend of God” he was called.
Ainsi s'accomplit ce que dit l'Écriture: «Abraham crut à Dieu, et cela lui fut imputé à justice»; et il fut appelé ami de Dieu.
24 You see, then, that man is considered righteous out of works, and not out of faith only;
Vous voyez que l'homme est justifié par les oeuvres, et non par la foi seulement.
25 and in like manner also Rahab the prostitute—was she not considered righteous out of works, having received the messengers, and having sent [them] forth by another way?
De même aussi, Rahab, la femme de mauvaise vie, ne fut-elle pas justifiée par les oeuvres, pour avoir reçu les messagers et les avoir fait partir par un autre chemin?
26 For as the body apart from [the] spirit is dead, so also the faith apart from works is dead.
En effet, comme le corps sans âme est mort, ainsi la foi sans les oeuvres est morte.
