Hosea 4

1 “Hear a word of YHWH, sons of Israel, For a strife [is] to YHWH with inhabitants of the land, For there is no truth, nor kindness, Nor knowledge of God in the land;

Hoort het woord van Jahweh, Israëls kinderen: Jahweh heeft een aanklacht Tegen de bewoners van het land! Want er is geen trouw meer, geen liefde, Geen kennis van God in het land;

2 Swearing, and lying, and murdering, And stealing, and committing adultery—have increased, And blood has touched against blood.

Zweren en liegen, moorden, stelen en echtbreuk plegen, Het éne bloedbad volgt op het andere.

3 Therefore the land mourns, And every dweller is weak in it, With the beast of the field, And with the bird of the heavens, And the fishes of the sea—they are removed.

Daarom is het land in rouw gedompeld, En kwijnen al zijn bewoners; Zelfs de beesten in het wild, de vogels in de lucht, En de vissen in de zee komen om.

4 Only, let no one strive, nor reprove a man, And your people [are] as those striving with a priest.

Toch is er niemand, die zich verzet, of berispt; Priesters, ook tegen u is mijn aanklacht gericht!

5 And you have stumbled in the day, And a prophet has also stumbled with you in the night, And I have cut off your mother.

Gij zijt gestruikeld op klaarlichte dag, De profeet met u in de nacht.

6 My people have been cut off for lack of knowledge, Because you have rejected knowledge, I reject you from being priest to Me, And you forget the Law of your God—I forget your sons, I also!

Ik zal u verdelgen, zoals mijn volk wordt verdelgd, Daar het geen kennis van God meer bezit; Omdat ook gij die kennis hebt verworpen, Zal Ik u uit mijn priesterschap werpen. Omdat gij de wet van uw God hebt vergeten, Zal Ik ook uw zonen vergeten;

7 According to their abundance so they sinned against Me, I change their glory into shame.

Hoe talrijker ze werden, hoe meer ze tegen Mij misdeden, En hun glorie in schande verkeerden.

8 The sin of My people they eat, And to their iniquity lift up their soul.

Ze leven van de zonde van mijn volk, En zitten te vlassen op zijn schuld;

9 And it has been, like people, like priest, And I have charged on it its ways, And its habitual doings I return to it.

Daarom zal het den priester gaan als het volk: Ik zal zijn gedrag op hem wreken, zijn werken vergelden.

10 And they have eaten, and are not satisfied, They have gone whoring, and do not increase, For they have left off taking heed to YHWH.

Ze zullen eten, maar niet worden verzadigd, Ontucht bedrijven, geen genot er in vinden. Want ze hebben Jahweh verlaten, om ontucht te doen,

11 Whoredom, and wine, and new wine, take the heart,

Wijn en most namen hun hart in beslag.

12 My people at its staff asks and its rod declares to it, For a spirit of whoredoms has caused to err, And they go whoring from under their God.

Mijn volk ondervraagt zijn stuk hout, En zijn stok moet hem de toekomst voorspellen; Want hun wulpse geest heeft ze op een dwaalspoor gebracht, Door hun ontucht hebben ze hun God verlaten.

13 On tops of the mountains they sacrifice, And on the hills they make incense, Under oak, and poplar, and terebinth, For good [is] its shade.

Ze offeren op de toppen der bergen, En branden wierook op de heuvels, Onder eik, wilg en terebint, Omdat daar de schaduw zo goed is. Neen, als uw dochters ontucht bedrijven, En uw schoondochters overspel doen,

14 Therefore your daughters commit whoredom, And your spouses commit adultery, I do not see after your daughters when they commit whoredom, And after your spouses when they commit adultery, For they with the harlots are separated, And with the whores they sacrifice, A people that does not understand kicks.

Zal Ik uw dochters niet straffen, omdat ze ontucht bedrijven, Uw schoondochters niet, omdat ze overspel doen. Want zelf zonderen zij zich met deernen af, En offeren met tempelhoeren; Zo is het onverstandige volk Geheel te gronde gegaan!

15 Though you [are] a harlot, O Israel, Do not let Judah become guilty, And do not come to Gilgal, nor go up to Beth-Aven, Nor swear, YHWH lives.

Israël, wilt gij ontucht bedrijven, Laat Juda zich niet schuldig maken! Gaat niet naar Gilgal, niet naar Bet-Awen, Zweert niet: "Zo waar als Jahweh leeft!"

16 For Israel has turned aside as a stubborn heifer, Now YHWH feeds them as a lamb in a large place.

Want Israël heeft zich verzet als een koppige koe, Nu zal Jahweh ze weiden als een losbandig lam;

17 Ephraim is joined to idols, leave him alone.

Efraïm heeft zich aan afgodsbeelden gekoppeld, Laat het begaan!

18 Sour [is] their drink, They have gone whoring diligently, Her protectors have thoroughly loved shame.

Ze slempen wijn, zijn op ontucht verzot, En verkiezen de schande boven hun glorie!

19 Wind has distressed her with its wings, And they are ashamed of their sacrifices!”

Maar de storm pakt ze weg op zijn vleugels, Van hun altaren oogsten ze schande!
