Genesis 33
1 And Jacob lifts up his eyes, and looks, and behold, Esau is coming, and with him four hundred men; and he divides the children to Leah, and to Rachel, and to the two maidservants;
Bientôt Jacob ayant levé les yeux, vit son frère Esaü arriver avec quatre cents hommes, et Jacob rangea séparément les enfants, autour de Lia, de Rachel et des deux servantes.
2 and he sets the maidservants and their children first, and Leah and her children behind, and Rachel and Joseph last.
Il mit en avant les deux servantes et leurs fils, puis par derrière Lia et ses enfants, et enfin Rachel avec Joseph.
3 And he himself passed over before them, and bows himself to the earth seven times, until his drawing near to his brother,
Lui-même s'avança devant eux tous, et se prosterna sept fois jusqu'à terre avant d'arriver à Esaü.
4 and Esau runs to meet him, and embraces him, and falls on his neck, and kisses him, and they weep;
Celui-ci accourut à sa rencontre, l'embrassa, lui jeta ses bras autour du cou, et le baisa, et ils pleurèrent tous les deux.
5 and he lifts up his eyes, and sees the women and the children, and says, “What [are] these to you?” And he says, “The children with whom God has favored your servant.”
Or, Esaü ayant levé les yeux, vit les femmes et les enfants, et il dit: Quoi! sont-ils à toi? Jacob répondit: Ce sont les enfants dont Dieu, dans sa miséricorde, a gratifié ton serviteur.
6 And the maidservants draw near, they and their children, and bow themselves;
Les servantes et leurs enfants s'approchèrent aussi, et ils se prosternèrent.
7 and Leah also draws near, and her children, and they bow themselves; and afterward Joseph has drawn near with Rachel, and they bow themselves.
Et Lia s'approcha avec ses enfants, et ils se prosternèrent; Rachel enfin s'approcha avec Joseph, et ils se prosternèrent.
8 And he says, “What to you [is] all this camp which I have met?” And he says, “To find grace in the eyes of my lord.”
Or, Esaü dit: Quoi! les troupeaux que j'ai rencontrés sont-ils aussi à toi? Jacob répondit: Je les ai envoyés pour que ton serviteur trouve grâce devant toi, seigneur.
9 And Esau says, “I have abundance, my brother, that which you have, let it be for yourself.”
Et son frère dit: J'ai de grandes possessions, frère, garde tes biens pour toi.
10 And Jacob says, “No, please, now if I have found grace in your eyes, then you have received my present from my hand, because that I have seen your face, as the seeing of the face of God, and you are pleased with me;
Si j'ai trouvé grâce devant toi, reprit Jacob, accepte mes présents, car j'ai vu ta face comme on verrait la face de Dieu; tu me feras ce plaisir:
11 please receive my blessing which is brought to you, because God has favored me, and because I have all [things]”; and he presses on him, and he receives [it],
Prends donc les présents que je t'ai apportés, parce que le Seigneur dans sa miséricorde m'en a gratifié, et que tout cela est à moi. Et il usa de contrainte, et son frère accepta.
12 and says, “Let us journey and go on, and I go on before you.”
Or, Esaü dit: Partons, et marchons droit devant nous.
13 And he says to him, “My lord knows that the children [are] tender, and the suckling flock and the herd [are] with me; when they have beaten them one day, then all the flock has died.
Jacob lui répondit: Mon seigneur sait que les enfants sont délicats, que des brebis et des vaches pleines m'accompagnent; si donc je les presse un seul jour, tout mon bétail mourra.
14 Please let my lord pass over before his servant, and I lead on gently, according to the foot of the work which [is] before me, and to the foot of the children, until I come to my lord, to Seir.”
Que mon seigneur précède son serviteur, et de mon côté je me hâterai en chemin, selon les forces de ce qui marche devant moi, et selon le pas des enfants, jusqu'à ce que j'aie rejoint mon seigneur en Séir.
15 And Esau says, “Please let me place with you some of the people who [are] with me”; and he said, “Why [is] this? I find grace in the eyes of my lord.”
Et son frère reprit: Je laisserai avec toi une partie des gens qui m'accompagnent. Il répondit: Pourquoi cela? il me suffit d'avoir trouvé grâce devant toi, seigneur.
16 And Esau turns back on that day on his way to Seir;
Et ce jour-là même Esaü reprit, pour retourner à Séir, le chemin par lequel il était venu.
17 and Jacob has journeyed to Succoth, and builds a house for himself, and has made shelters for his livestock, therefore he has called the name of the place Succoth.
De son côté Jacob s'en alla dresser ses tentes; il éleva là pour lui des tentes, et pour ses troupeaux des abris; c'est pourquoi il nomma ce lieu les Tabernacles.
18 And Jacob comes safe [to the] city of Shechem, which [is] in the land of Canaan, in his coming from Padan-Aram, and encamps before the city,
De là, Jacob passa à Salem, ville des Sécimes qui est en la terre de Chanaan, où il était rentré en revenant de la Mésopotamie Syrienne, et il campa en face de la ville.
19 and he buys the portion of the field where he has stretched out his tent, from the hand of the sons of Hamor, father of Shechem, for one hundred kesitah;
Il acheta d'Emmor, père de Sichem, au prix de cent agneaux, la portion du champ où il avait dressé ses tentes.
20 and he sets up there an altar, and proclaims at it God—the God of Israel.
Il y éleva un autel, et il invoqua le Dieu d'Israël.
