Genesis 25
1 And Abraham adds and takes a wife, and her name [is] Keturah;
Abraham had nog een andere vrouw genomen, Ketoera geheten.
2 and she bears to him Zimran, and Jokshan, and Medan, and Midian, and Ishbak, and Shuah.
Zij baarde hem Zimran, Joksjan, Medan, Midjan, Jisjbak en Sjóeach.
3 And Jokshan has begotten Sheba and Dedan; and the sons of Dedan were Asshurim, and Letushim, and Leummim;
Joksjan verwekte Sjeba en Dedan. De zonen van Dedan waren de Assjoerieten, de Letoesjieten en de Leoemmieten.
4 and the sons of Midian [are] Ephah, and Epher, and Enoch, and Abidah, and Eldaah: all these [are] sons of Keturah.
De zonen van Midjan waren Efa, Efer, Chanok, Abida en Eldaä. Dat waren allen nakomelingen van Ketoera.
5 And Abraham gives all that he has to Isaac;
Abraham gaf alles, wat hij bezat aan Isaäk.
6 and to the sons of the concubines whom Abraham has, Abraham has given gifts, and sends them away from his son Isaac (in his being yet alive) eastward, to the east country.
Aan de zonen van zijn bijvrouwen gaf Abraham geschenken, en zond ze nog tijdens zijn leven weg, uit de omgeving van zijn zoon Isaäk naar de overkant, het land van het oosten.
7 And these [are] the days of the years of the life of Abraham, which he lived, one hundred and seventy-five years;
Dit is het getal van Abrahams levensjaren; honderd vijf en zeventig jaar.
8 and Abraham expires, and dies in a good old age, aged and satisfied, and is gathered to his people.
Op hoge leeftijd is Abraham ontslapen; oud en afgeleefd is hij gestorven, en werd hij bij zijn volk verzameld.
9 And his sons Isaac and Ishmael bury him at the cave of Machpelah, at the field of Ephron, son of Zoar the Hittite, which [is] before Mamre—
Zijn zonen Isaäk en Jisjmaël begroeven hem in de grot van Makpela, die ten oosten van Mamre ligt, op de akker van Efron, den zoon van Sóchar, den Chittiet.
10 the field which Abraham bought from the sons of Heth—there Abraham has been buried, and his wife Sarah.
Het was de akker, die Abraham van de Chittieten gekocht had. Daar liggen Abraham en zijn vrouw Sara begraven.
11 And it comes to pass after the death of Abraham, that God blesses his son Isaac; and Isaac dwells by the Well of the Living One, my Beholder.
Toen Abraham gestorven was, zegende God zijn zoon Isaäk. Isaäk bleef wonen bij de bron van Lachai-Roï.
12 And these [are] the generations of Ishmael, Abraham’s son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah’s handmaid, has borne to Abraham;
Dit is de geslachtslijst van Jisjmaël, den zoon van Abraham, dien Hagar, de egyptische slavin van Sara, Abraham gebaard heeft.
13 and these [are] the names of the sons of Ishmael, by their names, according to their births: firstborn of Ishmael, Nebajoth; and Kedar, and Adbeel, and Mibsam,
Dit zijn de namen van Jisjmaëls zonen volgens de naam van hun geslacht. De eerstgeborene van Jisjmaël was Nebajot; verder Kedar, Adbeël en Mibsam,
14 and Mishma, and Dumah, and Massa,
Misjma, Doema en Massa,
15 Hadar, and Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah:
Chadad, Tema, Jetoer, Nafisj en Kédma.
16 these are sons of Ishmael, and these [are] their names, by their villages, and by their towers; twelve princes according to their peoples.
Dit zijn de zonen van Jisjmaël, en dat zijn hun namen naar hun nederzettingen en kampementen: twaalf vorsten overeenkomstig het getal van hun stammen.
17 And these [are] the years of the life of Ishmael, one hundred and thirty-seven years; and he expires, and dies, and is gathered to his people;
De levensjaren van Jisjmaël bedroegen honderd zeven en dertig jaar. Toen ontsliep hij en stierf, en werd bij zijn volk verzameld.
18 and they dwell from Havilah to Shur, which [is] before Egypt, in [your] going toward Asshur; in the presence of all his brothers has he fallen.
Hij woonde van Chawila tot Sjoer, dat tegenover Egypte ligt, en tot Assjoer toe, verwijderd van al zijn broeders.
19 And these [are] the generations of Isaac, Abraham’s son: Abraham has begotten Isaac;
Dit is de geslachtslijst van Isaäk, den zoon van Abraham. Abraham verwekte Isaäk.
20 and Isaac is a son of forty years in his taking Rebekah, daughter of Bethuel the Aramean, from Padan-Aram, sister of Laban the Aramean, to him for a wife.
Toen Isaäk veertig jaar oud was, huwde hij Rebekka, de dochter van Betoeël, den Arameër van Paddan-Aram, en zuster van den Arameër Laban.
21 And Isaac makes plea to YHWH before his wife, for she [is] barren: and YHWH accepts his plea, and his wife Rebekah conceives,
Omdat zijn vrouw onvruchtbaar bleef, bad Isaäk tot Jahweh voor haar; en Jahweh verhoorde hem, zodat zijn vrouw Rebekka zwanger werd.
22 and the children struggle together within her, and she says, “If [it is] right—why [am] I thus?” And she goes to seek YHWH.
Maar toen de kinderen in haar schoot tegen elkaar opdrongen, zeide zij: Als dit zo moet gaan, waarom blijf ik dan in leven! Daarom ging zij Jahweh raadplegen.
23 And YHWH says to her, “Two nations [are] in your womb, and two peoples from your bowels are parted; and the [one] people is stronger than the [other] people; and the older serves the younger.”
En Jahweh sprak tot haar: Twee volken draagt gij in uw schoot, Twee naties gaan uiteen van uw moederlijf af. De ene natie zal machtiger zijn dan de andere, De oudste zal de jongste dienen.
24 And her days to bear are fulfilled, and behold, twins [are] in her womb;
Toen het ogenblik was aangebroken, waarop zij moest baren, was er inderdaad een tweeling in haar schoot.
25 and the first comes out all red as a hairy robe, and they call his name Esau;
De eerste, die te voorschijn kwam, was rossig en helemaal als in een pels gewikkeld; men noemde hem Esau.
26 and afterward his brother has come out, and his hand is taking hold on Esau’s heel, and one calls his name Jacob; and Isaac [is] a son of sixty years in her bearing them.
Daarna kwam zijn broertje, die met zijn hand de hiel van Esau vasthield; daarom noemde men hem Jakob. Isaäk was zestig jaar oud, toen hij hen verwekte.
27 And the youths grew, and Esau is a man acquainted [with] hunting, a man of the field; and Jacob [is] a plain man, inhabiting tents;
Toen de jongens groot waren geworden, werd Esau een behendig jager, een buitenmens; maar Jakob was een rustig man, die in tenten verbleef.
28 and Isaac loves Esau, for [his] game [is] in his mouth; and Rebekah is loving Jacob.
Isaäk hield van Esau, omdat zijn wild hem smaakte; maar Rebekka beminde Jakob.
29 And Jacob boils stew, and Esau comes in from the field, and he [is] weary;
Eens was Jakob een gerecht aan het koken, toen Esau moe uit het veld thuiskwam.
30 and Esau says to Jacob, “Please let me eat some of this red-red thing, for I [am] weary”; therefore [one] has called his name Edom;
En Esau zeide tot Jakob: Laat me eens gauw eten van dat rode kooksel daar; want ik ben uitgeput. Daarom werd hij ook Edom genoemd.
31 and Jacob says, “Sell your birthright to me today.”
Jakob antwoordde: Verkoop me dan eerst uw eerstgeboorterecht.
32 And Esau says, “Behold, I am going to die, and what is this to me—a birthright?”
Esau hernam: Wel, ik ga toch dood; wat heb ik dan aan een eerstgeboorterecht.
33 And Jacob says, “Swear to me today”: and he swears to him, and sells his birthright to Jacob;
Jakob sprak: Zweer het mij eerst! En hij zwoer het hem. Zo verkocht hij aan Jakob zijn eerstgeboorterecht.
34 and Jacob has given bread and stew of lentils to Esau, and he eats, and drinks, and rises, and goes; and Esau despises the birthright.
Toen gaf Jakob aan Esau brood met het linzenmoes. Deze at en dronk, stond op en ging heen. Zo weinig telde Esau het eerstgeboorterecht.
