Genesis 19
1 And two of the messengers come toward Sodom at evening, and Lot is sitting at the gate of Sodom, and Lot sees, and rises to meet them, and bows himself—face to the earth,
Les deux anges arrivèrent à Sodome le soir. Lot était assis à la porte de Sodome. Lot les vit et se leva pour aller à leur rencontre. Il se prosterna, le visage contre terre,
2 and he says, “Now behold, my lords, please turn aside to the house of your servant, and lodge, and wash your feet—then you have risen early and gone on your way”; and they say, “No, but we lodge in the broad place.”
et dit: « Voici, mes seigneurs, entrez dans la maison de votre serviteur, restez-y toute la nuit, lavez-vous les pieds, et vous pourrez vous lever de bonne heure et poursuivre votre route. » Ils ont dit: « Non, mais on va rester dans la rue toute la nuit. »
3 And he presses on them greatly, and they turn aside to him, and come into his house; and he makes a banquet for them, and has baked unleavened things; and they eat.
Il les pressa beaucoup; ils vinrent avec lui, et entrèrent dans sa maison. Il leur fit un festin, il fit cuire des pains sans levain, et ils mangèrent.
4 Before they lie down, the men of the city—men of Sodom—have surrounded the house, from young even to aged, all the people from the extremity;
Mais avant qu'ils ne se couchent, les hommes de la ville, les hommes de Sodome, entourèrent la maison, jeunes et vieux, tous les gens de tous les quartiers.
5 and they call to Lot and say to him, “Where [are] the men who have come to you tonight? Bring them out to us, and we know them.”
Ils appelèrent Lot et lui dirent: « Où sont les hommes qui sont entrés chez toi cette nuit? Fais-les sortir vers nous, afin que nous fassions l'amour avec eux. »
6 And Lot goes out to them, to the opening, and the door has shut behind him,
Lot sortit vers eux par la porte, et ferma la porte après lui.
7 and says, “Please, my brothers, do not do evil;
Il dit: « Je vous en prie, mes frères, n'agissez pas si méchamment.
8 now behold, I have two daughters who have not known anyone; please let me bring them out to you, and do to them as [is] good in your eyes; only do nothing to these men, for therefore they have come in within the shadow of my roof.”
Voici, j'ai deux filles vierges. Laissez-moi vous les amener, et vous pourrez leur faire ce que vous voudrez. Mais ne faites rien à ces hommes, car ils sont venus à l'ombre de mon toit. »
9 And they say, “Come near here”; they also say, “This one has come to sojourn, and he certainly judges! Now, we do evil to you more than [to] them”; and they press against the man, against Lot greatly, and come near to break the door.
Ils dirent: « Reculez! » Puis ils dirent: « Cet homme est venu vivre comme un étranger, et il se fait juge. Maintenant, nous allons faire pire avec toi qu'avec eux! » Ils pressèrent fortement l'homme Lot et s'approchèrent pour briser la porte.
10 And the men put forth their hand, and bring in Lot to them, into the house, and have shut the door;
Mais les hommes tendirent la main, firent entrer Lot auprès d'eux dans la maison et fermèrent la porte.
11 and the men who [are] at the opening of the house they have struck with blindness, from small even to great, and they weary themselves to find the opening.
Ils frappèrent de cécité les hommes qui étaient à la porte de la maison, petits et grands, de sorte qu'ils se fatiguèrent à trouver la porte.
12 And the men say to Lot, “Whom have you here still? Son-in-law, your sons also, and your daughters, and all whom you have in the city, bring out from this place;
Les hommes dirent à Lot: « As-tu quelqu'un d'autre ici? Beaux-fils, tes fils, tes filles, et tous ceux que tu as dans la ville, fais-les sortir de ce lieu;
13 for we are destroying this place, for their cry has been great [before] the face of YHWH, and YHWH does send us to destroy it.”
car nous allons détruire ce lieu, car la protestation contre eux a été si grande devant Yahvé que Yahvé nous a envoyés pour le détruire. »
14 And Lot goes out and speaks to his sons-in-law, those taking his daughters, and says, “Rise, go out from this place, for YHWH is destroying the city”; and he is as [one] mocking in the eyes of his sons-in-law.
Lot sortit et parla à ses gendres, qui s'étaient engagés à épouser ses filles, et dit: « Levez-vous! Sortez de ce lieu, car Yahvé va détruire la ville! » Mais il sembla à ses gendres qu'il plaisantait.
15 And when the dawn has ascended, then the messengers press on Lot, saying, “Rise, take your wife, and your two daughters who are found present, lest you are consumed in the iniquity of the city.”
Le matin venu, les anges pressèrent Lot en disant: « Lève-toi! Prends ta femme et tes deux filles qui sont ici, de peur que tu ne sois consumé par l'iniquité de la ville. »
16 And he lingers, and the men lay hold on his hand, and on the hand of his wife, and on the hand of his two daughters, through the mercy of YHWH to him, and they bring him out, and cause him to rest outside the city.
Mais il s'attarda; les hommes saisirent sa main, la main de sa femme et les mains de ses deux filles, Yahvé étant miséricordieux envers lui; ils le firent sortir et le déposèrent hors de la ville.
17 And it comes to pass, when he has brought them outside, that he says, “Escape for your life; do not look behind you, nor stand in all the circuit; escape to the mountain, lest you are consumed.”
Lorsqu'ils les eurent fait sortir, il dit: « Sauve-toi pour sauver ta vie! Ne regardez pas derrière vous, et ne restez pas dans la plaine. Fuyez vers les montagnes, de peur que vous ne soyez consumés! ».
18 And Lot says to them, “Oh not [so], my lord;
Lot leur dit: « Oh, non, mon seigneur.
19 now behold, your servant has found grace in your eyes, and you make great your kindness which you have done with me by saving my life, and I am unable to escape to the mountain, lest the evil cleave [to] me and I have died;
Vois maintenant, ton serviteur a trouvé grâce à tes yeux, et tu as magnifié ta bonté, dont tu as fait preuve à mon égard en me sauvant la vie. Je ne peux pas m'échapper vers la montagne, de peur que le mal ne m'atteigne et que je meure.
20 now behold, this city [is] near to flee there, and it [is] little; please let me escape there (is it not little?) that my soul may live.”
Vois maintenant, cette ville est proche pour y fuir, et c'est une petite ville. Oh! que je m'y échappe (n'est-ce pas une petite?), et mon âme vivra. »
21 And he says to him, “Behold, I have also accepted your face for this thing, without overthrowing the city [for] which you have spoken;
Il lui dit: « Voici que j'ai exaucé ta demande concernant cette chose aussi, à savoir que je ne renverserai pas la ville dont tu as parlé.
22 hurry, escape there, for I am not able to do anything until your entering there”; therefore he calls the name of the city Zoar.
Dépêche-toi de t'y échapper, car je ne peux rien faire tant que tu n'y seras pas arrivé. » C'est pourquoi le nom de la ville fut appelé Zoar.
23 The sun has gone out on the earth, and Lot has entered into Zoar,
Le soleil s'était levé sur la terre lorsque Lot arriva à Zoar.
24 and YHWH has rained on Sodom and on Gomorrah brimstone and fire from YHWH, from the heavens;
Alors Yahvé fit pleuvoir du ciel sur Sodome et sur Gomorrhe du soufre et du feu, de la part de Yahvé.
25 and He overthrows these cities, and all the circuit, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which is shooting up from the ground.
Il détruisit ces villes, toute la plaine, tous les habitants des villes et ce qui poussait sur le sol.
26 And his wife looks from behind him, and she becomes a pillar of salt!
Mais la femme de Lot regardait derrière lui, et elle devint une colonne de sel.
27 And Abraham rises early in the morning to the place where he has stood [before] the face of YHWH;
Abraham se leva de bon matin au lieu où il s'était tenu devant Yahvé.
28 and he looks on the face of Sodom and Gomorrah, and on all the face of the land of the circuit, and sees, and behold, the smoke of the land went up as smoke of the furnace.
Il regarda vers Sodome et Gomorrhe, et vers tout le pays de la plaine, et il vit que la fumée du pays montait comme la fumée d'une fournaise.
29 And it comes to pass, in God’s destroying the cities of the circuit, that God remembers Abraham, and sends Lot out of the midst of the overthrow in the overthrowing of the cities in which Lot dwelt.
Lorsque Dieu détruisit les villes de la plaine, il se souvint d'Abraham et fit sortir Lot du milieu de la destruction, lorsqu'il détruisit les villes dans lesquelles Lot habitait.
30 And Lot goes up out of Zoar, and dwells in the mountain, and his two daughters with him, for he has been afraid of dwelling in Zoar, and he dwells in a cave, he and his two daughters.
Lot monta de Tsoar et habita dans la montagne, avec ses deux filles, car il avait peur d'habiter à Tsoar. Il habita dans une grotte avec ses deux filles.
31 And the firstborn says to the younger, “Our father [is] old, and there is not a man in the earth to come in to us, as [is] the way of all the earth;
L'aînée dit à la cadette: « Notre père est vieux, et il n'y a pas d'homme sur la terre pour entrer chez nous à la manière de toute la terre.
32 come, we cause our father to drink wine, and lie with him, and preserve a seed from our father.”
Venez, faisons boire du vin à notre père, et nous coucherons avec lui, afin de préserver la lignée de notre père. »
33 And they cause their father to drink wine on that night; and the firstborn goes in and lies with her father, and he has not known in her lying down or in her rising up.
Ils firent boire du vin à leur père cette nuit-là; l'aînée entra et coucha avec son père. Il ne sut ni quand elle se coucha, ni quand elle se leva.
34 And it comes to pass, on the next day, that the firstborn says to the younger, “Behold, I have lain with my father last night: we also cause him to drink wine tonight, then go in, lie with him, and we preserve a seed from our father.”
Le lendemain, l'aînée dit au cadet: « Voici, j'ai couché cette nuit avec mon père. Faisons-lui boire du vin encore cette nuit. Tu entres et tu couches avec lui, afin que nous préservions la lignée de notre père. »
35 And they cause their father to drink wine on that night also, and the younger rises and lies with him, and he has not known in her lying down or in her rising up.
Ils firent boire du vin à leur père cette nuit-là aussi. La plus jeune alla se coucher avec lui. Il ne sut ni quand elle se coucha, ni quand elle se leva.
36 And the two daughters of Lot conceive from their father,
Ainsi, les deux filles de Lot furent enceintes de leur père.
37 and the firstborn bears a son and calls his name Moab: he [is] father of Moab to this day.
L'aînée enfanta un fils, qu'elle appela Moab. Il est le père des Moabites, jusqu'à ce jour.
38 As for the younger, she has also born a son and calls his name Ben-Ammi: he [is] father of the sons of Ammon to this day.
La cadette enfanta aussi un fils, qu'elle appela Ben Ammi. Il est le père des enfants d'Ammon jusqu'à ce jour.
