< Ezekiel 27 >
1 And there is a word of YHWH to me, saying,
A message from the Lord came to me, saying,
2 “And you, son of man, lift up a lamentation concerning Tyre, and you have said to Tyre:
“Son of man, sing a funeral song for Tyre.
3 O dweller on the entrances of the sea, Merchant of the peoples to many islands, Thus said Lord YHWH: O Tyre, you have said, I [am] the perfection of beauty.
Tell Tyre, the city that stands at the gateway to the sea, supplying goods to many overseas nations, that this is what the Lord God says: Tyre, you say to yourself, ‘I'm so beautiful!’
4 Your borders [are] in the heart of the seas, Your builders have perfected your beauty.
Your borders extend far across the sea. Your builders put you together perfectly like a beautiful ship.
5 They have built of firs from Senir all your double-boarded ships for you, They have taken of cedars from Lebanon to make a mast for you,
They built you with pine timber from Mount Hermon. They used a cedar from Lebanon to make your mast.
6 They made your oars of oaks from Bashan, They have made your bench of ivory, A branch of Ashurim from islands of Chittim.
They made your oars with oaks from Bashan. They had wood from the island of Cyprus brought to make your deck and inlaid it with ivory.
7 Your sail has been of fine linen with embroidery from Egypt, To be for your ensign, Your covering has been of blue and purple from islands of Elishah.
They made your sail with the best linen from Egypt—this was your flag that everyone recognized. They used cloth dyed blue and purple from the coastlands of Elishah to make your awnings.
8 Inhabitants of Sidon and Arvad have been rowers for you, Your wise men, O Tyre, have been in you, They [are] your pilots.
Men from Sidon and Arvad did the rowing in your ship. You had your own skilled sailors from Tyre.
9 The elderly of Gebal and its wise men have been in you, Strengthening your breach; All ships of the sea and their mariners, Have been in you, to trade your merchandise.
Expert craftsmen from Gebal were onboard to repair any leaks. All the other ships at sea came to trade with you and their sailors bartered for your goods.
10 Persia and Lud and Phut Have been in your forces—your men of war. They hung up shield and helmet in you, They have given out your honor.
Men from Persia, Lydia, and Put were soldiers in your army. They lived among you, hanging up their shields and helmets with you, making you famous.
11 The sons of Arvad, and your force, [Are] on your walls all around, And short swordsmen have been in your towers, They have hung up their shields on your walls all around, They have perfected your beauty.
Men of Arvad and Helech defended all your city walls, while those from Gammad protected your towers. They hung their shields all around your walls. They made you so successful.
12 Tarshish [is] your merchant, Because of the abundance of all wealth, They have given silver, iron, tin, and lead [for] your wares.
Tarshish traded with you because you had so much of everything. They paid for your goods with silver, iron, tin, and lead.
13 Javan, Tubal, and Meshech—they [are] your merchants, They have given [the] soul of man, and vessels of bronze, [for] your merchandise.
Greece, Tubal, and Meshech traded with you. They bought your goods, paying with slaves and objects made of bronze.
14 Those of the house of Togarmah, They have given horses, and riding steeds, and mules [for] your wares.
People from Beth-togarmah traded horses, war horses, and mules for your goods.
15 Sons of Dedan [are] your merchants, Many islands [are] the market of your hand, They sent back horns of ivory and ebony [for] your reward.
People from Dedan traded with you. You had marketplaces in many coastal areas where the people bartered with you using ivory tusks and ebony wood.
16 Aram [is] your merchant, Because of the abundance of your works, They have given emerald, purple, and embroidery, And fine linen, and coral, and agate for your wares.
The Arameans traded with you because you had so much merchandise. They provided turquoise, purple cloth, embroidery, fine linen, coral, and red jasper in exchange for your goods.
17 Judah and the land of Israel—they [are] your merchants, They have given wheat of Minnith, and Pannag, And honey, and oil, and balm [for] your merchandise.
Judah and the country of Israel traded with you, paying you with wheat from Minnith, pastries and honey, olive oil and balm in return for your goods.
18 Damascus [is] your merchant, For the abundance of your works, Because of the abundance of all wealth, For wine of Helbon, and white wool.
Because you had many different products, in fact so much of everything, Damascus traded with you using wine from Helbon, wool from Zahar.
19 Dan and Javan go about with your wares, They have given shining iron, cassia, and cane, It has been in your merchandise.
Vedan and Javan from Izal bought your goods using wrought iron, cassia, and sweet calamus.
20 Dedan [is] your merchant, For clothes of freedom for riding.
Dedan traded with you, providing riding blankets.
21 Arabia, and all princes of Kedar, They [are] the traders of your hand, For lambs, and rams, and male goats, In these your merchants.
Arabia and all the leaders of Kedar traded with you, supplying lambs, rams, and goats.
22 Merchants of Sheba and Raamah—they [are] your merchants, They have given the chief of all spices, And every precious stone, and gold [for] your wares.
The merchants of Sheba and Raamah traded with you, exchanging gold, the very best spices, and precious stones for your goods.
23 Haran, and Canneh, and Eden, merchants of Sheba, Asshur—Chilmad—[are] your merchants,
Haran, Canneh, and Eden traded with you, as did Sheba, Asshur, and Chilmad.
24 They [are] your merchants for perfect things, For wrappings of blue, and embroidery, And for treasuries of rich apparel, With cords bound and girded, for your merchandise,
In your marketplaces they traded with you, providing the finest blue clothing, embroidery, carpets made with different colored threads, and strong ropes of twisted strands.
25 Ships of Tarshish are journeying [with] your merchandise for you, And you are filled and honored greatly, In the heart of the seas.
Trade ships from Tarshish transported your goods. You were like a ship sailing the sea, filled with heavy cargo.
26 Those rowing you have brought you into great waters, The east wind has broken you in the heart of the seas.
Your rowers took you a long way out on the water, but the east wind broke you apart in there in the open ocean.
27 Your wealth and your wares, Your merchandise, your mariners, And your pilots, strengtheners of your breach, And the traders of your merchandise, And all your men of war, who [are] in you, And in all your assembly that [is] in your midst, Fall into the heart of the seas in the day of your fall,
You've lost everything! You wealth, your goods, your cargo, your crew of sailors, officers, and repairmen, your traders and all the soldiers you had, along with everyone else on board, fall into the depths of the sea on the day of your shipwreck.
28 At the voice of the cry of your pilots the outskirts shake.
The land around shakes when your sailors scream.
29 And all handling an oar come down from their ships, Mariners [and] all the pilots of the sea stand on the land,
All the rowers abandon their ships. The sailors and all the ships' officers stand on the shore.
30 And have sounded with their voice for you, And cry bitterly, and cause dust to go up on their heads, They roll themselves in ashes;
They shout out for you and burst out crying. They mourn for you by throwing dust on their heads and rolling in ashes.
31 And they have made themselves bald for you, And they have girded on sackcloth, And they have wept for you, In bitterness of soul—a bitter mourning.
They shave their heads for you and clothe themselves in sackcloth. They weep for you, crying out in agony and heartfelt mourning
32 And their sons have lifted up a lamentation for you, And they have lamented over you, Who [is] as Tyre? As the cut-off one in the midst of the sea?
As they weep and wail over you, they sing a funeral song for you: ‘Who could compare to Tyre, now destroyed out in the sea?
33 With the outgoing of your wares from the seas, You have filled many peoples, With the abundance of your riches, and your merchandise, You have enriched [the] kings of earth.
You made many people happy when they received your goods from far across the sea. You made the kings of the earth rich with all your valuable goods and products.
34 At the time of [your] being broken by the seas in the depths of the waters, Your merchandise and all your assembly have fallen in your midst.
Now you have been shipwrecked by the sea, sunk in deep water, and your cargo and your people have gone down with you.
35 All inhabitants of the islands have been astonished at you, And their kings have been severely afraid, They have been troubled in countenance.
Everyone living on the coastlands is shocked at what happened to you. Their kings are horrified; their faces twisted with fear.
36 Merchants among the peoples have shrieked for you, You have been terrors, and you are not—for all time!”
The traders of the nations hiss at you in derision; disaster has brought you down and you're finished forever.”
