Exodus 4
1 And Moses answers and says, “And if they do not give credence to me, nor listen to my voice, and say, YHWH has not appeared to you?”
Alors Moïse répondit et dit: Mais voici, ils ne me croiront pas et n'écouteront point ma voix, car ils diront: L'Éternel ne t'est point apparu.
2 And YHWH says to him, “What [is] this in your hand?” And he says, “A rod”;
Et l'Éternel lui dit: Qu'as-tu dans la main? Et il répondit: Un bâton.
3 and He says, “Cast it to the earth”; and he casts it to the earth, and it becomes a serpent—and Moses flees from its presence.
Et Il dit: Jette-le par terre. Et il le jeta par terre, et le bâton devint serpent, et Moïse s'enfuit à son aspect.
4 And YHWH says to Moses, “Put forth your hand, and lay hold on the tail of it”; and he puts forth his hand, and lays hold on it, and it becomes a rod in his hand—
Et l'Éternel dit à Moïse: Étends la main et saisis-le par la queue. Et il étendit la main et le saisit, et le serpent redevint bâton dans sa main.
5 “so that they believe that YHWH, God of their fathers, has appeared to you, God of Abraham, God of Isaac, and God of Jacob.”
« C'est afin qu'ils croient que l'Éternel, Dieu de leurs pères, t'est apparu, le Dieu d'Abraham, le Dieu d'Isaac et le Dieu de Jacob. »
6 And YHWH says to him again, “Now put your hand into your bosom”; and he puts his hand into his bosom, and he brings it out, and behold, his hand [is] leprous as snow;
Et l'Éternel lui dit encore: Ramène donc ta main dans ton sein. Et il ramena sa main dans son sein, puis il l'en retira et voilà que sa main était couverte d'une lèpre pareille à la neige.
7 and He says, “Put your hand back into your bosom”; and he puts his hand back into his bosom, and he brings it out from his bosom, and behold, it has turned back as his flesh—
Et Il dit: Ramène ta main dans ton sein. Et il ramena sa main dans son sein, puis il l'en retira, et voilà qu'elle était redevenue pareille à sa chair.
8 “and it has come to pass, if they do not give credence to you, and do not listen to the voice of the first sign, that they have given credence to the voice of the latter sign.
« Que s'ils ne te croient pas et n'écoutent pas le langage du premier signe, ils croiront au langage du second signe.
9 And it has come to pass, if they do not give credence even to these two signs, nor listen to your voice, that you have taken of the waters of the River, and have poured [it] on the dry land, and the waters which you take from the River have been, indeed, they have become blood on the dry land.”
Que s'ils ne se rendent pas même à ces deux signes, et n'écoutent pas ta voix, prends de l'eau du Nil, et répands-la sur la terre sèche; l'eau que tu auras prise dans le fleuve, deviendra sang sur la terre sèche. »
10 And Moses says to YHWH, “O my Lord, I [am] not a man of words, either yesterday, or before, or since Your speaking to Your servant, for I [am] slow of mouth, and slow of tongue.”
Et Moïse dit à l'Éternel: Je t'en conjure, Seigneur! Ni d'hier ni d'avant-hier je ne fus un homme disert, pas même depuis que tu parles à ton serviteur, car j'ai la bouche pesante et la langue pesante.
11 And YHWH says to him, “Who appointed a mouth for man? Or who appoints the mute, or deaf, or open, or blind? Is it not I, YHWH?
Et l'Éternel lui dit: Qui a formé à l'homme une bouche, ou qui rend muet ou sourd, voyant ou aveugle? n'est-ce pas moi l'Éternel?
12 And now, go, and I am with your mouth, and have directed you that which you speak”;
Ainsi va, et moi-même je serai en aide à ta bouche, et je t'enseignerai ce que tu auras à dire.
13 and he says, “O my Lord, please send by the hand [of another that] You send.”
Et il dit: Je t'en conjure, Seigneur! oh! envoie qui il te plaira d'envoyer.
14 And the anger of YHWH burns against Moses, and He says, “Is Aaron the Levite not your brother? I have known that he speaks well, and also, behold, he is coming out to meet you; when he has seen you, then he has rejoiced in his heart,
Alors la colère de l'Éternel s'enflamma contre Moïse, et Il dit: N'as-tu pas pour frère Aaron, le Lévite? je sais qu'il est capable de parler, et même le voici qui vient au-devant de toi, et te voyant il se réjouira dans son cœur.
15 and you have spoken to him, and have set the words in his mouth, and I am with your mouth, and with his mouth, and have directed you that which you do;
Et tu lui parleras, et tu lui mettras les paroles dans la bouche, et je serai en aide à ta bouche et à sa bouche, et je vous montrerai ce que vous aurez à faire.
16 and he, he has spoken to the people for you, and it has come to pass, he is to you for a mouth, and you are to him for God;
Et il parlera pour toi au peuple et il sera une bouche pour toi et tu seras Dieu pour lui.
17 and you take this rod in your hand, with which you do the signs.”
Et prends dans ta main ce bâton-là avec lequel tu opéreras les signes.
18 And Moses goes and turns back to his father-in-law Jethro, and says to him, “Please let me go, and I return to my brothers who [are] in Egypt, and I see whether they are yet alive.” And Jethro says to Moses, “Go in peace.”
Alors Moïse s'en alla et revint chez son beau-père Jéthro, et lui dit: Laisse-moi partir et rejoindre mes frères qui sont en Egypte, afin que je voie s'ils sont encore en vie. Et Jéthro dit à Moïse: Va en paix!
19 And YHWH says to Moses in Midian, “Go, return to Egypt, for all the men who seek your life have died”;
Et l'Éternel dit à Moïse en Madian: Va, retourne en Egypte, car tous les hommes qui en voulaient à ta vie sont morts.
20 and Moses takes his wife, and his sons, and causes them to ride on the donkey, and turns back to the land of Egypt, and Moses takes the rod of God in his hand.
Alors Moïse prit sa femme et ses fils et leur donna des ânes pour monture et revint au pays d'Egypte. Et Moïse prit, le bâton de Dieu dans sa main.
21 And YHWH says to Moses, “In your going to return to Egypt, see—all the wonders which I have put in your hand—that you have done them before Pharaoh, and I strengthen his heart, and he does not send the people away;
Et l'Éternel dit à Moïse: En cheminant pour retourner en Egypte, considère tous les miracles que j'ai mis en ton pouvoir, et tu les opéreras devant Pharaon; mais moi, j'endurcirai son cœur, en sorte qu'il ne laissera point aller le peuple.
22 and you have said to Pharaoh, Thus said YHWH: My son, My firstborn [is] Israel,
Et tu diras à Pharaon: Ainsi parle l'Éternel: Israël est mon fils premier-né,
23 and I say to you, send My son away, and he serves Me; and [if] you refuse to send him away, behold, I am slaying your son, your firstborn.”
et je te dis: Laisse aller mon fils me servir; et si tu refuses de le laisser aller, voici, je ferai mourir ton fils premier-né.
24 And it comes to pass in the way, in a lodging place, that YHWH meets him, and seeks to put him to death;
Et il arriva pendant le voyage, dans l'hôtellerie, que l'Éternel se trouva devant lui, et Il voulait le faire mourir.
25 and Zipporah takes a flint, and cuts off the foreskin of her son, and causes [it] to touch his feet, and says, “You [are] surely a bridegroom of blood to me”;
Alors Tsippora prit un caillou et trancha le prépuce de son fils, et le jeta à ses pieds, en disant: Tu es pour moi un époux sanguinaire.
26 and He desists from him. Then she said, “A bridegroom of blood,” in reference to the circumcision.
Et Il cessa de le prendre à partie. C'est alors qu'elle dit: Tu es un époux sanguinaire eu égard à la circoncision.
27 And YHWH says to Aaron, “Go into the wilderness to meet Moses”; and he goes, and meets him on the mountain of God, and kisses him,
Et l'Éternel dit à Aaron: Va à la rencontre de Moïse dans le désert. Et il partit et le rencontra sur la montagne de Dieu, et il l'embrassa.
28 and Moses declares to Aaron all the words of YHWH with which He has sent him, and all the signs with which He has charged him.
Alors Moïse rapporta à Aaron toutes les paroles de l'Éternel qui l'envoyait et tous les signes dont Il lui avait donné l'ordre.
29 And Moses goes—Aaron also—and they gather all the elderly of the sons of Israel,
Puis Moïse se mit en route avec Aaron; et ils assemblèrent tous les Anciens des enfants d'Israël.
30 and Aaron speaks all the words which YHWH has spoken to Moses, and does the signs before the eyes of the people;
Et Aaron leur transmit toutes les paroles que l'Éternel avait dites à Moïse; et il opéra les signes devant le peuple.
31 and the people believe when they hear that YHWH has looked after the sons of Israel, and that He has seen their affliction; and they bow and pay respect.
Et le peuple crut, et quand ils apprirent que l'Éternel avait souci des enfants d'Israël, et qu'il considérait leur misère, ils se prosternèrent et adorèrent.
