Exodus 22
1 When a man steals an ox or sheep, and has slaughtered it or sold it, he repays [with] five of the herd for the ox, and four of the flock for the sheep.
Si un homme dérobe un bœuf ou un agneau et qu’il l’égorge ou le vende, il restituera cinq bœufs pour le bœuf, et quatre agneaux pour l’agneau.
2 If in the breaking through, the thief is found, and he has been struck and has died, there is no blood for him;
Si le voleur est surpris la nuit faisant effraction, et qu’il soit frappé et meure, on n’est pas responsable du sang pour lui;
3 if the sun has risen on him, blood [is] for him, he certainly repays; if he has nothing, then he has been sold for his theft;
mais si le soleil est levé, on sera responsable du sang pour lui. – Le voleur fera restitution: s’il n’a rien, on le vendra pour ce qu’il a volé.
4 if the theft is certainly found alive in his hand, whether ox, or donkey, or sheep—he repays double.
Si ce qu’il a volé, bœuf, âne ou brebis, se trouve encore vivant entre ses mains, il restituera le double.
5 When a man depastures a field or vineyard, and has sent out his beast, and it has pastured in the field of another, he repays [with] the best of his field, and the best of his vineyard.
Si un homme fait du dégât dans un champ ou dans une vigne, en laissant son bétail brouter le champ d’autrui, il donnera en dédommagement le meilleur de son champ et le meilleur de sa vigne.
6 When fire goes forth and has found thorns, and a stack, or the standing grain, or the field has been consumed, he who causes the burning certainly repays.
Si un feu éclate et que, après avoir atteint les épines, il consume des gerbes, ou du blé sur pied, ou un champ, celui qui aura allumé l’incendie donnera un dédommagement.
7 When a man gives silver or vessels to his neighbor to keep, and it has been stolen out of the man’s house; if the thief is found, he repays double.
Si un homme donne en garde à un autre de l’argent ou des objets, et qu’on les vole de la maison de ce dernier, le voleur, si on le trouve, restituera le double.
8 If the thief is not found, then the master of the house has been brought near to God [to see] whether he has not put forth his hand against the work of his neighbor.
Si le voleur n’est pas trouvé, le maître de la maison se présentera devant Dieu, pour déclarer s’il n’a pas mis la main sur le bien de son prochain.
9 For every matter of transgression, for ox, for donkey, for sheep, for raiment, for any lost thing of which it is said that it is his, the matter of them both comes to God; he whom God condemns repays double to his neighbor.
Quel que soit le corps du délit, bœuf, âne, brebis, vêtement ou tout objet perdu, au sujet duquel on dira: « C’est bien cela! » la cause des deux parties ira jusqu’à Dieu, et celui que Dieu aura condamné restituera le double à son prochain.
10 When a man gives to his neighbor a donkey, or ox, or sheep, or any beast to keep, and it has died, or has been hurt, or taken captive, [with] none seeing—
Si un homme donne en garde à un autre un bœuf, une brebis, une tête de bétail quelconque, et que l’animal meure, se casse un membre, ou soit enlevé, sans qu’il y ait de témoin,
11 an oath of YHWH is between them both, that he has not put forth his hand against the work of his neighbor, and its owner has accepted, and he does not repay;
le serment de Yahweh interviendra entre les deux parties, pour qu’on sache si le dépositaire n’a pas mis la main sur le bien de son prochain; et le propriétaire de la bête acceptera ce serment, et l’autre n’aura pas à indemniser.
12 but if it is certainly stolen from him, he repays to its owner;
Mais si la bête a été dérobée chez lui, il aura à indemniser le propriétaire.
13 if it is certainly torn, he brings it in [as] a witness; he does not repay the torn thing.
Si elle a été déchirée par une bête féroce, il en produira les restes en témoignage, et il n’aura pas à indemniser pour la bête déchirée.
14 And when a man asks for [anything] from his neighbor, and it has been hurt or has died—its owner not being with it—he certainly repays;
Si un homme emprunte à un autre une bête, et qu’elle se casse un membre ou meure, son propriétaire n’étant pas présent, il y aura lieu à indemnité.
15 if its owner [is] with it, he does not repay—if it [is] a hired thing, it has come for its hire.
Si le propriétaire est présent, on n’indemnisera pas. Si la bête était louée, le prix de location sera une compensation.
16 And when a man entices a virgin who [is] not betrothed, and has lain with her, he certainly endows her to himself for a wife;
Si un homme séduit une vierge qui n’est pas fiancée, et couche avec elle, il paiera sa dot et la prendra pour femme.
17 if her father utterly refuses to give her to him, he weighs out money according to the dowry of virgins.
Si le père refuse de la lui accorder, le séducteur paiera l’argent qu’on donne pour la dot des vierges.
18 You do not keep a witch alive.
Tu ne laisseras pas vivre la magicienne.
19 Whoever lies with a beast is certainly put to death.
Quiconque a commerce avec une bête sera mis à mort.
20 He who is sacrificing to a god, except to YHWH alone, is devoted.
Celui qui offre des sacrifices aux dieux, et non à Yahweh seul, sera voué à l’anathème.
21 And you do not oppress a sojourner, nor crush him, for you have been sojourners in the land of Egypt.
Tu ne maltraiteras pas l’étranger et tu ne l’opprimeras point, car vous avez été des étrangers dans le pays d’Égypte.
22 You do not afflict any widow or orphan;
Vous n’affligerez pas la veuve ni l’orphelin.
23 if you really afflict him, surely if he cries to Me at all, I certainly hear his cry;
Si tu les affliges, ils crieront vers moi, et j’entendrai leur cri;
24 and My anger has burned, and I have slain you by the sword, and your wives have been widows, and your sons orphans.
ma colère s’enflammera, et je vous détruirai par l’épée, et vos femmes seront des veuves et vos enfants des orphelins.
25 If you lend money [to] My poor people [who are] with you, you are not as a usurer to him; you do not lay usury on him;
Si tu prêtes de l’argent à quelqu’un de mon peuple, au pauvre qui est avec toi, tu ne seras pas à son égard comme un créancier, tu n’exigeras pas de lui d’intérêt.
26 if you take the garment of your neighbor in pledge at all, you return it to him during the going in of the sun:
Si tu prends en gage le manteau de ton prochain, tu le lui rendras avant le coucher du soleil;
27 for it is his only covering, it [is] his garment for his skin; wherein does he lie down? And it has come to pass, when he cries to Me, that I have heard, for I [am] gracious.
car c’est sa seule couverture, c’est le vêtement dont il s’enveloppe le corps: sur quoi coucherait-il? S’il crie vers moi, je l’entendrai car je suis compatissant.
28 You do not revile God, and you do not curse a prince among your people.
Tu ne blasphémeras pas contre Dieu, et tu ne maudiras pas un prince de ton peuple.
29 You do not delay your fullness and your liquids; you give the firstborn of your sons to Me;
Tu ne différeras pas de m’offrir les prémices de ta moisson et de ton pressoir. Tu me donneras le premier-né de tes fils.
30 so you do to your ox [and] to your sheep; it is with its mother [for] seven days, on the eighth day you give it to Me.
Tu feras de même du premier-né de ta vache et de ta brebis: il restera sept jours avec sa mère et le huitième jour tu me le donneras.
31 And you are holy men to Me, and you do not eat flesh torn in the field, you cast it to a dog.
Vous serez pour moi des hommes saints; vous ne mangerez pas la chair déchirée qui se trouvera dans les champs: vous la jetterez aux chiens.
