Esther 9
1 And in the twelfth month—it [is] the month of Adar—on the thirteenth day of it, in which the word of the king, even his law, has come to be done, in the day that the enemies of the Jews had hoped to rule over them, and it is turned that the Jews rule over those hating them—
Au douzième mois, qui est le mois d’Adar, le treizième jour du mois, où devaient s’exécuter l’ordre et l’édit du roi, jour où les ennemis des Juifs avaient espéré dominer sur eux, ce fut le contraire qui arriva, et les Juifs dominèrent sur leurs ennemis.
2 the Jews have been assembled in their cities, in all provinces of King Ahasuerus, to put forth a hand on those seeking their evil, and no man has stood in their presence, for their fear has fallen on all the peoples.
Les Juifs se rassemblèrent dans leurs villes, dans toutes les provinces du roi Assuérus, pour frapper ceux qui cherchaient leur perte, et personne ne put leur résister, car la crainte qu’ils inspiraient s’était répandue chez tous les peuples.
3 And all heads of the provinces, and the lieutenants, and the governors, and those doing the work that the king has, are lifting up the Jews, for a fear of Mordecai has fallen on them;
Tous les chefs des provinces, les satrapes, les gouverneurs, les fonctionnaires du roi soutinrent les Juifs, car la crainte de Mardochée pesait sur eux.
4 for great [is] Mordecai in the house of the king, and his fame is going into all the provinces, for the man Mordecai is going on and becoming great.
Car Mardochée était puissant dans la maison du roi, et sa renommée se répandait dans toutes les provinces, car cet homme, Mardochée, allait toujours grandissant.
5 And the Jews strike among all their enemies—a striking of the sword, and slaughter, and destruction—and do with those hating them according to their pleasure,
Les Juifs frappèrent donc à coup d’épée tous leurs ennemis; ce fut un massacre et une destruction; ils traitèrent comme il leur plut ceux qui leur étaient hostiles.
6 and in Shushan the palace the Jews have slain and destroyed five hundred men;
Dans Suse, la capitale, les Juifs tuèrent et firent périr cinq cents hommes,
7 and Parshandatha, and Dalphon, and Aspatha,
et ils massacrèrent Pharsandatha, Delphon, Esphatha,
8 and Poratha, and Adalia, and Aridatha,
Phoratha, Adalia, Aridatha,
9 and Parmashta, and Arisai, and Aridai, and Vajezatha,
Phermestha, Arisaï, Aridaï et Jézatha,
10 ten sons of Haman son of Hammedatha, adversary of the Jews, they have slain, and on the prey they have not put forth their hand.
les dix fils d’Aman, fils d’Amadatha, l’ennemi des Juifs. Mais ils ne mirent pas la main au pillage.
11 On that day has come the number of the slain in Shushan the palace before the king,
Le jour même, le nombre de ceux qui avaient été tués dans Suse, la capitale, parvint à la connaissance du roi.
12 and the king says to Esther the queen, “In Shushan the palace the Jews have slain and destroyed five hundred men, and the ten sons of Haman; in the rest of the provinces of the king what have they done? And what [is] your petition? And it is given to you; and what your request again? And it is done.”
Et le roi dit à la reine Esther: « Les Juifs ont tué et fait périr dans Suse, la capitale, cinq cents hommes et les dix fils d’Aman; que n’auront-ils pas fait dans le reste des provinces du roi?… Quelle est ta demande? Elle te sera accordée. Quel est ton désir? Il sera accompli. »
13 And Esther says, “If [it is] good to the king, let it also be given tomorrow, to the Jews who [are] in Shushan, to do according to the law of today; and the ten sons of Haman they hang on the tree.”
Esther répondit: « Si le roi le trouve bon, qu’il soit permis aux Juifs qui sont à Suse d’agir encore demain selon le décret d’aujourd’hui, et que l’on pende au bois des dix fils d’Aman. »
14 And the king commands [for it] to be done so; and a law is given in Shushan, and they have hanged the ten sons of Haman.
Le roi ordonna de faire ainsi, et l’édit fut publié dans Suse. On pendit les dix fils d’Aman,
15 And the Jews who [are] in Shushan are also assembled on the fourteenth day of the month of Adar, and they slay three hundred men in Shushan, and they have not put forth their hand on the prey.
et les Juifs qui se trouvaient à Suse, s’étant rassemblés de nouveau le quatorzième jour du mois d’Adar, tuèrent dans Suse trois cents hommes. Mais ils ne mirent pas la main au pillage.
16 And the rest of the Jews, who [are] in the provinces of the king, have been assembled, even to stand for their life, and to rest from their enemies, and to slay seventy-five thousand among those hating them, and they have not put forth their hand on the prey;
Les autres Juifs qui étaient dans les provinces du roi se rassemblèrent pour défendre leur vie et obtenir que leurs ennemis les laissassent en repos; ils tuèrent soixante-quinze mille de ceux qui leur étaient hostiles. Mais ils ne mirent pas la main au pillage.
17 on the thirteenth day of the month of Adar, even to rest on the fourteenth of it, and to make it a day of banquet and of joy.
Ces choses arrivèrent le treizième jour du mois d’Adar. Les Juifs se reposèrent le quatorzième, et ils en firent un jour de festin et de joie.
18 And the Jews who [are] in Shushan have been assembled, on the thirteenth day of it, and on the fourteenth of it, even to rest on the fifteenth of it, and to make it a day of banquet and of joy.
Les Juifs qui se trouvaient à Suse, s’étant rassemblés le treizième et le quatorzième jour, se reposèrent le quinzième, et ils en firent un jour de festin et de joie.
19 Therefore the Jews of the open places, who are dwelling in cities of the open places, are making the fourteenth day of the month of Adar—joy and banquet, and a good day, and of sending portions to one another.
C’est pourquoi les Juifs de la campagne, qui habitent des villes sans murailles, font du quatorzième jour du mois d’Adar un jour de joie, de festin et de fête, où l’on s’envoie des portions les uns aux autres.
20 And Mordecai writes these things, and sends letters to all the Jews who [are] in all provinces of King Ahasuerus, who are near and who are far off,
Mardochée écrivit ces choses, et il envoya des lettres à tous les Juifs qui étaient dans toutes les provinces du roi Assuérus, à ceux qui étaient près comme à ceux qui étaient loin,
21 to establish on them, to be keeping the fourteenth day of the month of Adar, and the fifteenth day of it, in every year and year,

22 as days on which the Jews have rested from their enemies, and the month that has been turned to them from sorrow to joy, and from mourning to a good day, to make them days of banquet and of joy, and of sending portions to one another, and gifts to the needy.
comme étant les jours où ils avaient obtenu d’être laissés en repos par leurs ennemis, et le mois où avaient été changés leur tristesse en joie et leur deuil en jour de fête; on devait donc faire de ces jours des jours de festin et de joie, où l’on s’envoie des portions les uns aux autres, et où l’on distribue des dons aux indigents.
23 And the Jews have received that which they had begun to do, and that which Mordecai has written to them,
Les Juifs adoptèrent pour usage, ce qu’ils avaient déjà commencé à faire et ce que Mardochée leur écrivit.
24 because Haman son of Hammedatha the Agagite, adversary of all the Jews, had devised concerning the Jews to destroy them, and had caused to fall Pur—that [is] the lot—to crush them and to destroy them;
Car Aman, fils d’Amadatha, du pays d’Agag, ennemi de tous les Juifs, avait formé contre les Juifs le projet de les perdre et il avait jeté le PUR, c’est-à-dire le sort, afin de les exterminer et de les détruire.
25 and in her coming in before the king, he commanded with the letter, “Let his evil scheme that he devised against the Jews return on his own head,” and they have hanged him and his sons on the tree,
Mais Esther s’étant présentée devant le roi, celui-ci ordonna par écrit de faire retomber sur la tête d’ Aman le méchant projet qu’il avait formé contre les Juifs, et on le pendit au bois avec ses fils.
26 therefore they have called these days Purim—by the name of the lot—therefore, because of all the words of this letter, and what they have seen concerning this, and what has come to them,
C’est pourquoi on appela ces jours PURIM, du nom de PUR. Ainsi, d’après tout le contenu de cette lettre, d’après ce qu’ils en avaient eux-mêmes vu et ce qui leur était arrivé,
27 the Jews have established and received on them, and on their seed, and on all those joined to them, and it does not pass away, to be keeping these two days according to their writing, and according to their season, in every year and year;
les Juifs établirent et adoptèrent pour eux, pour leurs descendants et pour tous ceux qui s’attacheraient à eux, la coutume irrévocable de célébrer chaque année ces deux jours, selon le rite prescrit et au temps fixé.
28 and these days are remembered and kept in every generation and generation, family and family, province and province, and city and city, and these days of Purim do not pass away from the midst of the Jews, and their memorial is not ended from their seed.
Ces jours devaient être rappelés et célébrés, de génération en génération, dans chaque famille, dans chaque province et dans chaque ville, et ces jours des PURIM ne devaient jamais être abolis au milieu des Juifs, ni le souvenir s’en effacer dans leur postérité.
29 And Esther the queen, daughter of Abihail, writes, and Mordecai the Jew, with all might, to establish this second letter of Purim,
La reine Esther, fille d’Abihaïl, et le Juif Mardochée écrivirent une seconde fois, de la manière la plus pressante, pour confirmer cette lettre sur les PURIM.
30 and he sends letters to all the Jews, to the one hundred twenty-seven provinces of the kingdom of Ahasuerus—words of peace and truth—
On envoya des lettres à tous les Juifs, dans les cent vingt-sept provinces du royaume d’Assuérus: des paroles de paix et de fidélité,
31 to establish these days of Purim, in their seasons, as Mordecai the Jew has established on them, and Esther the queen, and as they had established on themselves, and on their seed—matters of the fastings, and of their cry.
et la recommandation de maintenir ces jours des PURIM au temps fixé, comme le Juif Mardochée et la reine Esther les avaient établis pour eux, et comme ils les avaient établis pour eux-mêmes et pour leurs descendants, avec les jeûnes et leurs lamentations.
32 And a saying of Esther has established these matters of Purim, and it is written in the Scroll.
Ainsi l’ordre d’Esther établit ces observances des PURIM, et cela fut écrit dans le livre.
