Esther 4
1 And Mordecai has known all that has been done, and Mordecai tears his garments, and puts on sackcloth and ashes, and goes forth into the midst of the city and cries—a cry loud and bitter,
Or quand Mardochée eut appris tout ce qui avait été fait, il déchira ses vêtements, et se couvrit d'un sac et de cendre, et il sortit par la ville, criant d'un cri grand et amer.
2 and he comes to the front of the gate of the king, but none is to come to the gate of the king with a sackcloth-garment.
Et il vint jusqu'au devant de la porte du Roi; (car il n'était point permis d'entrer dans la porte du Roi étant vêtu d'un sac).
3 And in each and every province, the place where the word of the king, even his law, is coming, the Jews have a great mourning, and fasting, and weeping, and lamenting: sackcloth and ashes are spread for many.
Et en chaque province, dans les lieux où la parole du Roi et son ordonnance parvint, les Juifs furent en grand deuil, jeûnant, pleurant, et se lamentant; et plusieurs se couchaient sur le sac, et sur la cendre.
4 And young women of Esther come in and her eunuchs, and declare [it] to her, and the queen is exceedingly pained, and sends garments to clothe Mordecai, and to turn aside his sackcloth from off him, and he has not received [them].
Or les demoiselles d'Esther, et ses Eunuques vinrent et lui rapportèrent ces choses, et la Reine fut fort affligée, et elle envoya des vêtements pour en vêtir Mardochée, et afin qu'il ôtât son sac de dessus lui; mais il ne [les] prit point.
5 And Esther calls to Hatach, of the eunuchs of the king, whom he has stationed before her, and gives him a charge for Mordecai, to know what this [is], and why this [is].
Alors Esther appela Hatach l'un des Eunuques du Roi, lequel il avait établi pour la servir, et elle lui donna charge de savoir de Mardochée, ce que c'était, et pourquoi il en usait ainsi.
6 And Hatach goes out to Mordecai, to a broad place of the city, that [is] before the gate of the king,
Hatach donc sortit vers Mardochée en la place de la ville, qui était au devant de la porte du Roi.
7 and Mordecai declares to him all that has met him, and the explanation of the money that Haman said to weigh to the treasuries of the king for the Jews, to destroy them,
Et Mardochée lui déclara tout ce qui lui était arrivé, et l'offre de l'argent comptant qu'Haman avait promis de délivrer au trésor du Roi, à cause des Juifs, afin qu'on les détruisît.
8 and the copy of the writing of the law that had been given in Shushan to destroy them he has given to him, to show Esther, and to declare [it] to her, and to lay a charge on her to go in to the king, to make supplication to him, and to seek from before him, for her people.
Et il lui donna une copie de l'ordonnance qui avait été mise par écrit, et qui avait été publiée dans Susan, afin de les exterminer, pour [la] montrer à Esther, et lui faire entendre le tout, et lui recommander d'entrer chez le Roi pour lui demander grâce, et lui faire requête pour sa nation.
9 And Hatach comes in and declares to Esther the words of Mordecai,
Ainsi Hatach revint, et rapporta à Esther les paroles de Mardochée.
10 and Esther speaks to Hatach, and charges him for Mordecai:
Et Esther dit à Hatach, et lui commanda de dire à Mardochée:
11 “All servants of the king, and people of the provinces of the king, know that any man and woman who comes to the king, into the inner court, who is not called—one law of his [is] to put [them] to death, apart from him to whom the king holds out the golden scepter, then he has lived; and I have not been called to come in to the king these thirty days.”
Tous les serviteurs du Roi, et le peuple des provinces du Roi savent qu'il n'y a ni homme, ni femme qui entre chez le Roi au parvis de dedans, sans y être appelé, [et] que c'est une de ses lois, de le faire mourir; à moins que le Roi ne lui ait tendu le sceptre d'or, car en ce cas-là il a la vie sauve; or il y a déjà trente jours que je n'ai point été appelée pour entrer chez le Roi.
12 And they declare to Mordecai the words of Esther,
On rapporta donc les paroles d'Esther à Mardochée.
13 and Mordecai commands to send back to Esther: “Do not think in your soul to be delivered [in] the house of the king, more than all the Jews,
Et Mardochée dit qu'on fit cette réponse à Esther: Ne pense pas en toi-même que [toi seule] d'entre tous les Juifs échappes dans la maison du Roi.
14 but if you keep entirely silent at this time, respite and deliverance remains to the Jews from another place, and you and the house of your fathers are destroyed; and who knows whether for a time like this you have come to the kingdom?”
Mais si tu te tais entièrement en ce temps-ci, les Juifs respireront et seront délivrés par quelque autre moyen; mais vous périrez, toi et la maison de ton père. Et qui sait si tu n'es point parvenue au Royaume pour un temps comme celui-ci?
15 And Esther commands to send back to Mordecai:
Alors Esther dit qu'on fit cette réponse à Mardochée:
16 “Go, gather all the Jews who are found in Shushan, and fast for me, and do not eat nor drink three days, by night and by day; also I and my young women fast likewise, and so I go in to the king, that [is] not according to law, and when I have perished—I have perished.”
Va, assemble tous les Juifs qui se trouveront à Susan, et jeûnez pour moi, et ne mangez et ne buvez de trois jours, tant la nuit que le jour; et moi et mes demoiselles nous jeûnerons de même; puis je m'en irai ainsi vers le Roi, ce qui n'est point selon la Loi; et s'il arrive que je périsse, que je périsse.
17 And Mordecai passes on, and does according to all that Esther has charged on him.
Mardochée donc s'en alla, et fit comme Esther lui avait commandé.
