Ecclesiastes 8
1 Who [is] as the wise? And who knows the interpretation of a thing? The wisdom of man causes his face to shine, and the hardness of his face is changed.
Qui est comparable au sage et connaît comme lui le sens des choses? La sagesse de l’homme éclaire sa face et prête à sa figure un double ascendant.
2 I [counsel]: keep the command of a king, even for the sake of an oath [to] God.
Je dis, moi: "Observe l’ordre du roi, et cela en raison du serment fait à Dieu:
3 Do not be troubled at his presence, you may go, do not stand in an evil thing, for all that he pleases he does.
Ne sois pas pressé de sortir de sa présence; ne t’engage pas dans une mauvaise affaire, car il fait tout ce qu’il veut.
4 Where the word of a king [is] power [is], and who says to him, “What do you do?”
En effet, la parole du roi est souveraine; qui oserait lui dire: "Que fais-tu?"
5 Whoever is keeping a command knows no evil thing, and time and judgment the heart of the wise knows.
Celui qui exécute son ordre n’éprouvera rien de fâcheux; un esprit avisé connaît l’heure propice et la bonne règle.
6 For to every delight there is a time and a judgment, for the misfortune of man is great on him.
Car pour toute chose il est un temps opportun et une règle sûre; mais il est un mal qui pèse lourdement sur l’homme:
7 For he does not know that which will be, for when it will be who declares to him?
il ne sait pas ce qui arrivera; et comment les choses se passeront, qui le lui dira?
8 There is no man ruling over the spirit to restrain the spirit, and there is no authority over the day of death, and there is no discharge in battle, and wickedness does not deliver its possessors.
Nul homme n’est maître du vent, capable d’emprisonner le vent. Il n’est point de pouvoir contre le jour de la mort, ni de rémission dans le combat; et ce n’est pas la méchanceté qui sauvera l’impie.
9 All this I have seen so as to give my heart to every work that has been done under the sun; a time that man has ruled over man to his own evil.
Tout cela, je l’ai vu, en appliquant mon attention à toute l’œuvre qui s’accomplit sous le soleil, en un temps où l’homme domine sur l’homme pour son malheur.
10 And so I have seen the wicked buried, and they went in, even from the Holy Place they go, and they are forgotten in the city whether they had so done. This [is] also vanity.
Et c’est ainsi que j’ai vu des méchants escortés à leur tombe, tandis que disparaissaient des lieux saints et étaient vite oubliés dans la ville ceux qui avaient bien agi: vanité encore!
11 Because sentence has not been done [on] an evil work speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of man is full within them to do evil.
Par cela même qu’une sanction n’atteint pas immédiatement les mauvaises actions, le cœur des fils d’Adam s’enhardit à faire le mal;
12 Though a sinner is doing evil one hundred [times], and prolonging [himself] for it, surely also I know that there is good to those fearing God, who fear before Him.
car tel pécheur fait cent fois le mal et voit sa vie se prolonger, bien que je sache, moi, que ceux qui craignent Dieu méritent d’être heureux à cause de leur piété,
13 And good is not to the wicked, and he does not prolong days as a shadow, because he is not fearing before God.
tandis que le bonheur devrait être refusé au méchant et que celui-ci, tel qu’une ombre, ne devrait pas voir de longs jours, parce qu’il ne craint pas Dieu.
14 There is a vanity that has been done on the earth, that there are righteous ones to whom it is coming according to the work of the wicked, and there are wicked ones to whom it is coming according to the work of the righteous. I have said that this [is] also vanity.
Il est un fait décevant qui se passe sur la terre: il est des justes qui sont traités comme s’ils agissaient à la manière des impies, et des impies qui sont traités comme s’ils agissaient à la manière des justes; et je disais que cela aussi est vanité.
15 And I have praised mirth because there is no good to man under the sun except to eat and to drink, and to rejoice, and it remains with him of his labor the days of his life that God has given to him under the sun.
Aussi ai-je prôné la joie, puisque rien n’est bon pour l’homme sous le soleil comme de manger, de boire et de se réjouir; c’est là ce qui lui demeure fidèle au milieu de ses peines, tout le long de la vie que Dieu lui a octroyée sous le soleil.
16 When I gave my heart to know wisdom and to see the business that has been done on the earth (for there is also a spectator in whose eyes sleep is not by day and by night),
Lorsque je me suis appliqué à connaître la sagesse et à envisager la besogne qui s’accomplit sur la terre, j’ai vu que tant le jour que la nuit le sommeil fuit ses yeux.
17 then I considered all the work of God, that man is not able to find out the work that has been done under the sun, because though man labor to seek, yet he does not find; and even though the wise man speak of knowing he is not able to find.
J’Ai observé toute l’œuvre de Dieu et constaté que l’homme ne saurait atteindre tous les faits qui se passent sous le soleil; que même si l’homme s’évertuait à s’en rendre compte, il n’y réussirait point. Le sage même, s’il prétendait arriver à la connaissance, n’y parviendrait pas.
