Ecclesiastes 7
1 Better [is] a name than good perfume, And the day of death than the day of birth.
Melhor é a boa fama do que o melhor unguento, e o dia da morte do que o dia do nascimento d'alguem.
2 Better to go to a house of mourning, Than to go to a house of banqueting, For that is the end of all men, And the living lays [it] to his heart.
Melhor é ir á casa do luto do que ir á casa do banquete, porque n'ella é o fim de todos os homens; e os vivos o applicam ao seu coração.
3 Better [is] sorrow than laughter, For by the sadness of the face the heart becomes better.
Melhor é o nojo do que o riso, porque com a tristeza do rosto se encommenda o coração.
4 The heart of the wise [is] in a house of mourning, And the heart of fools in a house of mirth.
O coração dos sabios está na casa do luto, mas o coração dos tolos na casa da alegria.
5 Better to hear a rebuke of a wise man, Than [for] a man to hear a song of fools,
Melhor é ouvir a reprehensão do sabio, do que ouvir alguem a canção do tolo.
6 For as the noise of thorns under the pot, So [is] the laughter of a fool, even this [is] vanity.
Porque qual o ruido dos espinhos debaixo d'uma panella, tal é o riso do tolo: tambem isto é vaidade.
7 Surely oppression makes the wise mad, And a gift destroys the heart.
Verdadeiramente que a oppressão faria endoidecer até ao sabio, e a peita corrompe o coração.
8 Better [is] the latter end of a thing than its beginning, Better [is] the patient of spirit, than the haughty of spirit.
Melhor é o fim das coisas do que o principio d'ellas: melhor é o longanimo do que o altivo de coração.
9 Do not be hasty in your spirit to be angry, For anger in the bosom of fools rests.
Não te apresses no teu espirito a irar-te, porque a ira repousa no seio dos tolos.
10 Do not say, “What was it, That the former days were better than these?” For you have not asked wisely of this.
Nunca digas: Porque foram os dias passados melhores do que estes? porque nunca com sabedoria isto perguntarias.
11 Wisdom [is] good with an inheritance, And an advantage [it is] to those beholding the sun.
Tão boa é a sabedoria como a herança, e d'ella os que vêem o sol tiram proveito.
12 For wisdom [is] a defense, money [is] a defense, And the advantage of the knowledge of wisdom [is], She revives her possessors.
Porque a sabedoria serve de sombra, como de sombra serve o dinheiro; mas a excellencia do conhecimento é que a sabedoria dá vida ao seu possuidor.
13 See the work of God, For who is able to make straight that which He made crooked?
Attenta para a obra de Deus; porque quem poderá endireitar o que elle fez torto?
14 In a day of prosperity be in gladness, And in a day of calamity consider: God has also made this alongside of that, To the intent that man does not find anything after him.
No dia da prosperidade goza do bem, mas no dia da adversidade considera; porque tambem Deus fez a este em opposição áquelle, para que o homem nada ache do que haverá depois d'elle.
15 The whole I have considered in the days of my vanity. There is a righteous one perishing in his righteousness, and there is a wrongdoer prolonging [himself] in his wrong.
Tudo isto vi nos dias da minha vaidade: ha um justo que perece na sua justiça, e ha um impio que prolonga os seus dias na sua maldade.
16 Do not be over-righteous, nor show yourself too wise, why are you desolate?
Não sejas demasiadamente justo, nem demasiadamente sabio: para que te destruirias a ti mesmo?
17 Do not do much wrong, neither be a fool, why do you die within your time?
Não sejas demasiadamente impio, nem sejas demasiadamente louco: para que morrerias fóra de teu tempo?
18 [It is] good that you lay hold on this, and also, do not withdraw your hand from that, for whoever is fearing God goes out with them all.
Bom é que retenhas isto, e tambem d'isto não retires a tua mão; porque quem teme a Deus escapa de tudo isto.
19 The wisdom gives strength to a wise man, more than wealth the rulers who have been in a city.
A sabedoria fortalece ao sabio, mais do que dez governadores que haja na cidade.
20 Because there is not a righteous man on earth that does good and does not sin.
Na verdade que não ha homem justo sobre a terra, que faça bem, e nunca peque.
21 Also to all the words that they speak do not give your heart, that you do not hear your servant reviling you.
Tão pouco appliques o teu coração a todas as palavras que se disserem, para que não venhas a ouvir que o teu servo te amaldiçoa.
22 For many times also has your heart known that you yourself have also reviled others.
Porque o teu coração tambem já confessou muitas vezes que tambem tu amaldiçoaste a outros.
23 All this I have tried by wisdom; I have said, “I am wise,” and it [is] far from me.
Tudo isto inquiri com sabedoria; e disse: Sabedoria adquirirei; mas ella ainda estava longe de mim.
24 Far off [is] that which has been, and deep, deep, who finds it?
Longe está o que foi; e o profundissimo quem o achará?
25 I have turned around, also my heart, to know and to search, and to seek out wisdom, and reason, and to know the wrong of folly, and the madness of foolishness.
Eu virei o meu coração para saber, e inquirir, e buscar a sabedoria e a razão, e para saber a impiedade da estulticia e a doidice dos desvarios.
26 And I am finding more bitter than death, the woman whose heart [is] nets and snares, her hands [are] bands; the good before God escapes from her, but the sinner is captured by her.
E eu achei uma coisa mais amarga do que a morte, a mulher cujo coração são redes e laços, e as suas mãos ataduras: quem fôr bom diante de Deus escapará d'ella, mas o peccador virá a ser preso por ella.
27 See, this I have found, said the Preacher, one to one, to find out the reason
Vedes aqui, isto achei, diz o prégador, conferindo uma coisa com a outra para assim achar a razão d'ellas;
28 (that still my soul had sought, and I had not found), One man, a teacher, I have found, and a woman among all these I have not found.
A qual ainda busca a minha alma, porém ainda não a achei; um homem entre mil achei eu, mas uma mulher entre todas estas não achei.
29 See, this alone I have found, that God made man upright, and they have sought out many inventions.
Vedes aqui, que isto tão sómente achei: que Deus fez ao homem recto, porém elles buscaram muitas invenções.
