Ecclesiastes 2
1 I said in my heart, “Pray, come, I try you with mirth, and look on gladness”; and behold, even it [is] vanity.
Io ho detto in cuor mio: “Andiamo! Io ti voglio mettere alla prova con la gioia, e tu godrai il piacere!” Ed ecco che anche questo è vanità.
2 Of laughter I said, “Foolish!” And of mirth, “What [is] this it is doing?”
Io ho detto del riso: “E’ una follia”; e della gioia: “A che giova?”
3 I have sought in my heart to draw out with wine my appetite (and my heart leading in wisdom), and to take hold on folly until I see where this [is]—the good to the sons of man of that which they do under the heavens, the number of the days of their lives.
Io presi in cuor mio la risoluzione di abbandonar la mia carne alle attrattive del vino, e, pur lasciando che il mio cuore mi guidasse saviamente, d’attenermi alla follia, finch’io vedessi ciò ch’è bene che gli uomini facciano sotto il cielo, durante il numero de’ giorni della loro vita.
4 I made great my works, I built for myself houses, I planted for myself vineyards.
Io intrapresi de’ grandi lavori; mi edificai delle case; mi piantai delle vigne;
5 I made for myself gardens and paradises, and I planted in them trees of every fruit.
mi feci de’ giardini e dei parchi, e vi piantai degli alberi fruttiferi d’ogni specie;
6 I made for myself pools of water, to water from them a forest shooting forth trees.
mi costrussi degli stagni per adacquare con essi il bosco dove crescevano gli alberi;
7 I acquired menservants, and maidservants, and sons of the house were to me; also, I had much substance—herd and flock—above all who had been before me in Jerusalem.
comprai servi e serve, ed ebbi de’ servi nati in casa; ebbi pure greggi ed armenti, in gran numero, più di tutti quelli ch’erano stati prima di me a Gerusalemme;
8 I also gathered for myself silver and gold, and the peculiar treasure of kings and of the provinces. I prepared for myself men-singers and women-singers, and the luxuries of the sons of man—a wife and wives.
accumulai argento, oro, e le ricchezze dei re e delle province; mi procurai dei cantanti e delle cantanti, e ciò che fa la delizia de’ figliuoli degli uomini, delle donne in gran numero.
9 And I became great, and increased above everyone who had been before me in Jerusalem; also, my wisdom stood with me.
Così divenni grande, e sorpassai tutti quelli ch’erano stati prima di me a Gerusalemme; e la mia sapienza rimase pur sempre meco.
10 And all that my eyes asked I did not keep back from them; I did not withhold my heart from any joy, for my heart rejoiced because of all my labor, and this has been my portion, from all my labor,
Di tutto quello che i miei occhi desideravano io nulla rifiutai loro; non privai il cuore d’alcuna gioia; poiché il mio cuore si rallegrava d’ogni mia fatica, ed è la ricompensa che m’è toccata d’ogni mia fatica.
11 and I have looked on all my works that my hands have done, and on the labor that I have labored to do, and behold, the whole [is] vanity and distress of spirit, and there is no advantage under the sun!
Poi considerai tutte le opere che le mie mani avevano fatte, e la fatica che avevo durata a farle, ed ecco che tutto era vanità e un correr dietro al vento, e che non se ne trae alcun profitto sotto il sole.
12 And I turned to see wisdom, and madness, and folly, but what [is] the man who comes after the king? That which [is] already—they have done it!
Allora mi misi ad esaminate la sapienza, la follia e la stoltezza. Che farà l’uomo che succederà al re? Quello ch’è già stato fatto.
13 And I saw that there is an advantage to wisdom above folly, like the advantage of the light above the darkness.
E vidi che la sapienza ha un vantaggio sulla stoltezza, come la luce ha un vantaggio sulle tenebre.
14 The wise—his eyes [are] in his head, and the fool is walking in darkness, and I also knew that one event happens with them all;
Il savio ha gli occhi in testa, mentre lo stolto cammina nelle tenebre; ma ho riconosciuto pure che tutti e due hanno la medesima sorte.
15 and I said in my heart, “As it happens with the fool, it happens also with me, and why am I then more wise?” And I spoke in my heart, that also this [is] vanity:
Ond’io ho detto in cuor mio: “La sorte che tocca allo stolto toccherà anche a me; perché dunque essere stato così savio?” E ho detto in cuor mio che anche questo è vanità.
16 That there is no remembrance to the wise—with the fool—for all time, for that which [is] already, [in] the days that are coming is all forgotten, and how dies the wise? With the fool!
Poiché tanto del savio quanto dello stolto non rimane ricordo eterno; giacché, nei giorni a venire, tutto sarà da tempo dimenticato. Pur troppo il savio muore, al pari dello stolto!
17 And I have hated life, for sad to me [is] the work that has been done under the sun, for the whole [is] vanity and distress of spirit.
Perciò io ho odiata la vita, perché tutto ciò che si fa sotto il sole m’è divenuto odioso, poiché tutto è vanità e un correr dietro al vento.
18 And I have hated all my labor that I labor at under the sun, because I leave it to a man who is after me.
Ed ho odiata ogni fatica che ho durata sotto il sole, e di cui debbo lasciare il godimento a colui che verrà dopo di me.
19 And who knows whether he is wise or foolish? Yet he rules over all my labor that I have labored at, and that I have done wisely under the sun! This [is] also vanity.
E chi sa s’egli sarà savio o stolto? Eppure sarà padrone di tutto il lavoro che io ho compiuto con fatica e con saviezza sotto il sole. Anche questo è vanità.
20 And I turned around to cause my heart to despair concerning all the labor that I labored at under the sun.
Così sono arrivato a far perdere al mio cuore ogni speranza circa tutta la fatica che ho durato sotto il sole.
21 For there is a man whose labor [is] in wisdom, and in knowledge, and in equity, and to a man who has not labored therein he gives it—his portion! Even this [is] vanity and a great evil.
Poiché, ecco un uomo che ha lavorato con saviezza, con intelligenza e con successo e lascia il frutto del suo lavoro in eredità a un altro, che non v’ha speso intorno alcuna fatica! Anche questo è vanità, e un male grande.
22 For what has been to a man by all his labor, and by the thought of his heart that he labored at under the sun?
Difatti, che profitto trae l’uomo da tutto il suo lavoro, dalle preoccupazioni del suo cuore, da tutto quel che gli è costato tanta fatica sotto il sole?
23 For all his days are sorrows, and his travail sadness; even at night his heart has not lain down; this [is] also vanity.
Tutti i suoi giorni non sono che dolore, la sua occupazione non è che fastidio; perfino la notte il suo cuore non ha posa. Anche questo è vanità.
24 There is nothing good in a man who eats, and has drunk, and has shown his soul good in his labor. This also I have seen that it [is] from the hand of God.
Non v’è nulla di meglio per l’uomo del mangiare, del bere, e del far godere all’anima sua il benessere in mezzo alla fatica ch’ei dura; ma anche questo ho veduto che viene dalla mano di Dio.
25 For who eats and who hurries out more than I?
Difatti, chi, senza di lui, può mangiare o godere?
26 For to a man who [is] good before Him, He has given wisdom, and knowledge, and joy; and to a sinner He has given travail, to gather and to heap up, to give to the good before God. Even this [is] vanity and distress of spirit.
Poiché Iddio dà all’uomo ch’egli gradisce, sapienza, intelligenza e gioia; ma al peccatore dà la cura di raccogliere, d’accumulare, per lasciar poi tutto a colui ch’è gradito agli occhi di Dio. Anche questo è vanità e un correre dietro al vento.
