Deuteronomy 25
1 “When there is a strife between men, and they have come near to the judgment, and they have judged, and declared righteous the righteous, and declared wrong the wrongdoer,
S'il y a une controverse entre des hommes, qu'ils viennent en jugement et que les juges les jugent, ils justifieront le juste et condamneront le méchant.
2 then it has come to pass, if the wrongdoer is to be struck, that the judge has caused him to fall down, and [one] has struck him in his presence, according to the sufficiency of his wrongdoing, by number;
Si le méchant est digne d'être battu, le juge le fera coucher et sera battu devant lui, selon sa méchanceté, par nombre de coups.
3 he strikes him forty [times]; he is not adding, lest he is adding to strike him above these many stripes, and your brother be lightly esteemed in your eyes.
Il pourra le condamner à quarante coups de bâton au plus. Il n'en donnera pas davantage, de peur que, s'il en donne davantage et le batte plus que ce nombre de coups, ton frère ne soit dégradé à tes yeux.
4 You do not muzzle an ox in its threshing.
Tu ne muselleras pas le bœuf quand il foule le grain.
5 When brothers dwell together, and one of them has died and has no son, the wife of the dead is not given to a strange man; her husband’s brother goes in to her, and has taken her to him for a wife, and performs the duty of her husband’s brother;
Si des frères habitent ensemble, et que l'un d'eux meure et n'ait pas de fils, la femme du défunt ne sera pas mariée en dehors à un étranger. Le frère de son mari entrera chez elle, la prendra pour femme, et exercera à son égard les fonctions de frère du mari.
6 and it has been, the firstborn which she bears rises for the name of his dead brother, and his name is not wiped away out of Israel.
Le premier-né qu'elle portera succédera au nom de son frère mort, afin que son nom ne soit pas effacé d'Israël.
7 And if the man does not delight to take his brother’s wife, then his brother’s wife has gone up to the gate, to the elderly, and said, My husband’s brother is refusing to raise up a name for his brother in Israel; he has not been willing to perform the duty of my husband’s brother;
Si l'homme ne veut pas prendre la femme de son frère, la femme de son frère montera à la porte vers les anciens, et dira: « Le frère de mon mari refuse d'élever à son frère un nom en Israël. Il ne s'acquitte pas envers moi du devoir de frère de mon mari ».
8 and [the] elderly of his city have called for him, and spoken to him, and he has stood and said, I have no desire to take her.
Alors les anciens de sa ville l'appelleront et lui parleront. S'il se tient debout et dit: « Je ne veux pas la prendre »,
9 Then his brother’s wife has drawn near to him before the eyes of the elderly, and drawn his shoe from off his foot, and spat in his face, and answered and said, Thus it is done to the man who does not build up the house of his brother;
la femme de son frère viendra à lui en présence des anciens, détachera sa sandale de son pied et lui crachera au visage. Elle répondra: « Il en sera ainsi de l'homme qui ne bâtit pas la maison de son frère. »
10 and his name has been called in Israel, The house of him whose shoe is drawn off.
On appellera son nom en Israël: « La maison de celui qui a ôté sa sandale. »
11 When men strive together with one another, and the wife of one has drawn near to deliver her husband out of the hand of his striker, and has put forth her hand, and laid hold on his private parts,
Lorsque des hommes se battent entre eux et que la femme de l'un d'eux s'approche pour délivrer son mari de la main de celui qui le frappe, qu'elle étend la main et le saisit par les parties intimes,
12 then you have cut off her hand; your eye does not spare.
tu lui couperas la main. Ton œil n'aura pas de pitié.
13 You do not have [both] a great stone and a small stone in your bag.
Tu n'auras pas dans ton sac des poids différents, un lourd et un léger.
14 You do not have a great ephah and a small ephah in your house.
Tu n'auras pas dans ta maison des mesures différentes, une grande et une petite.
15 You have a complete and just stone, [and] you have a complete and just ephah, so that they prolong your days on the ground which your God YHWH is giving to you;
Tu auras un poids parfait et juste. Tu auras une mesure parfaite et juste, afin que tes jours se prolongent dans le pays que l'Éternel, ton Dieu, te donne.
16 for anyone doing these things, anyone doing iniquity, [is] an abomination [to] your God YHWH.
Car tous ceux qui font de telles choses, tous ceux qui agissent sans droit, sont en abomination à l'Éternel, ton Dieu.
17 Remember that which Amalek has done to you in the way in your going out from Egypt,
Souviens-toi de ce qu'Amalek t'a fait en chemin, à ta sortie d'Égypte,
18 that he has met you in the way, and strikes among you all those feeble behind you (when you [were] weary and fatigued), and is not fearing God.
comment il t'a rencontré en chemin, et a frappé les derniers d'entre vous, tous ceux qui étaient affaiblis derrière toi, quand tu étais faible et fatigué; et il n'a pas craint Dieu.
19 And it has been, in your God YHWH giving rest to you from all your surrounding enemies, in the land which your God YHWH is giving to you [for] an inheritance to possess it, you blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under the heavens—you do not forget.”
C'est pourquoi, lorsque l'Éternel, ton Dieu, t'aura donné du repos contre tous tes ennemis d'alentour, dans le pays que l'Éternel, ton Dieu, te donne en héritage pour le posséder, tu effaceras de dessous le ciel le souvenir d'Amalek. Tu n'oublieras pas.
