Deuteronomy 20
1 “When you go out to battle against your enemy, and have seen horse and chariot—a people more numerous than you—you are not afraid of them, for your God YHWH [is] with you, who is bringing you up out of the land of Egypt;
നിങ്ങൾ ശത്രുക്കൾക്കെതിരേ യുദ്ധംചെയ്യാൻ പുറപ്പെടുമ്പോൾ കുതിരകൾ, രഥങ്ങൾ എന്നിങ്ങനെ നിങ്ങൾക്കുള്ളതിനെക്കാൾ വലിയ സൈന്യത്തെ കണ്ടു ഭയപ്പെടരുത്. കാരണം, ഈജിപ്റ്റിൽനിന്ന് നിങ്ങളെ പുറപ്പെടുവിച്ചുകൊണ്ടുവന്ന നിന്റെ ദൈവമായ യഹോവ നിന്നോടുകൂടെ ഉണ്ട്.
2 and it has been, in your drawing near to the battle, that the priest has come near, and spoken to the people,
നിങ്ങൾ യുദ്ധത്തിനു പുറപ്പെടുമ്പോൾ പുരോഹിതൻ മുമ്പോട്ടുവന്ന് സൈന്യത്തോട് ഇപ്രകാരം സംസാരിക്കണം:
3 and said to them, Hear, O Israel: You are drawing near today to battle against your enemies, do not let your hearts be tender, do not fear, nor make haste, nor be terrified at their presence,
“ഇസ്രായേലേ, കേൾക്കുക, ഇന്നു നിങ്ങൾ ശത്രുവിനോടു യുദ്ധത്തിനു പോകുന്നു. ഹൃദയം തളരുകയോ ഭയപ്പെടുകയോ ചെയ്യരുത്. ഭ്രമിക്കരുത്, അവരുടെമുമ്പിൽ ചഞ്ചലപ്പെടുകയുമരുത്.
4 for your God YHWH [is] He who is going with you, to fight for you with your enemies—to save you.
നിങ്ങളുടെ ദൈവമായ യഹോവ നിങ്ങളുടെ ശത്രുവിനെതിരേ യുദ്ധംചെയ്ത് നിങ്ങൾക്കു വിജയം നൽകാൻ നിങ്ങളോടൊപ്പം അണിനിരന്നിരിക്കുന്നു.”
5 And the authorities have spoken to the people, saying, Who [is] the man that has built a new house and has not dedicated it? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in battle and another man dedicate it.
ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥന്മാർ സൈന്യത്തോട് ഇപ്രകാരം പറയണം: “ആരെങ്കിലും പുതിയ വീട് പണിതിട്ട് ഗൃഹപ്രതിഷ്ഠ നടത്താത്തവനായിട്ടുണ്ടോ? അവൻ വീട്ടിലേക്കു തിരികെപ്പോകട്ടെ. അല്ലെങ്കിൽ അവൻ യുദ്ധത്തിൽ മരിച്ചുപോകുകയും മറ്റൊരുവൻ ഗൃഹപ്രതിഷ്ഠ നടത്തുകയും ചെയ്യും.
6 And who [is] the man that has planted a vineyard and has not made it common? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in battle, and another man make it common.
ആരെങ്കിലും മുന്തിരിത്തോപ്പു നട്ടശേഷം അതിന്റെ ഫലം അനുഭവിക്കാത്തവനായിട്ടുണ്ടോ? അവൻ വീട്ടിലേക്കു തിരികെപ്പോകട്ടെ. അല്ലെങ്കിൽ അവൻ യുദ്ധത്തിൽ മരിച്ചുപോകുകയും മറ്റൊരുവൻ അതിന്റെ ഫലം അനുഭവിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യും.
7 And who [is] the man that has betrothed a woman and has not taken her? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in battle, and another man take her.
ആരെങ്കിലും ഒരു സ്ത്രീക്ക് വിവാഹവാഗ്ദാനം നൽകി അവളെ വിവാഹംകഴിക്കാതെ ഇരിക്കുന്നുണ്ടോ? അവൻ വീട്ടിലേക്കു മടങ്ങിപ്പോകട്ടെ. അല്ലെങ്കിൽ അവൻ യുദ്ധത്തിൽ മരിക്കുകയും മറ്റൊരുവൻ അവളെ വിവാഹംകഴിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യും.”
8 And the authorities have added to speak to the people and said, Who [is] the man that is afraid and tender of heart? Let him go and return to his house, and the heart of his brothers does not melt like his heart.
ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥന്മാർ വീണ്ടും പറയേണ്ടത്, “ആരെങ്കിലും ഭയപ്പെട്ടോ ഹൃദയം തളർന്നോ ഇരിക്കുന്നവനായിട്ടുണ്ടോ? അവന്റെ സഹപടയാളികളുടെ ഹൃദയം ക്ഷീണിക്കാതെ ഇരിക്കേണ്ടതിന് അവൻ വീട്ടിലേക്കു തിരികെപ്പോകട്ടെ.”
9 And it has come to pass, as the authorities finish to speak to the people, that they have appointed princes of the hosts at the head of the people.
ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥന്മാർ സൈന്യത്തോടു സംസാരിച്ചശേഷം അവരുടെമേൽ സൈന്യാധിപന്മാരെ നിയമിക്കണം.
10 When you draw near to a city to fight against it, then you have called to it for peace,
നിങ്ങൾ ഒരു നഗരം ആക്രമിക്കാൻ ചെല്ലുമ്പോൾ അവിടത്തെ ജനങ്ങൾക്ക് ആദ്യം സമാധാനം വാഗ്ദാനം നൽകണം.
11 and it has been, if it answers you [with] peace, and has opened to you, then it has come to pass, all the people who are found in it are for tributaries to you, and have served you.
അവർ നിങ്ങളുടെ നിബന്ധനകൾ അംഗീകരിച്ച് വാതിൽ തുറന്നാൽ അവിടെയുള്ള ജനം എല്ലാം നിങ്ങൾക്ക് അടിമകളായി നിങ്ങൾക്കുവേണ്ടി ജോലി ചെയ്യണം.
12 And if it does not make peace with you, and has made war with you, then you have laid siege against it,
എന്നാൽ അവർ സമാധാനം നിരസിച്ച് നിങ്ങളോടു യുദ്ധത്തിന് ഒരുങ്ങിയാൽ നിങ്ങൾ ആ പട്ടണത്തെ ഉപരോധിക്കണം.
13 and your God YHWH has given it into your hand, and you have struck every male of it by the mouth of the sword.
നിന്റെ ദൈവമായ യഹോവ അതു നിന്റെ കൈയിൽ ഏൽപ്പിക്കുമ്പോൾ അതിലുള്ള സകലപുരുഷന്മാരെയും വാൾകൊണ്ടു കൊല്ലണം.
14 Only, the women, and the infants, and the livestock, and all that is in the city, all its spoil, you seize for yourself, and you have eaten the spoil of your enemies which your God YHWH has given to you.
എന്നാൽ സ്ത്രീകളെയും കുഞ്ഞുങ്ങളെയും കന്നുകാലികളെയും പട്ടണത്തിലുള്ളതൊക്കെയും നിങ്ങൾക്കു കൊള്ളയായി എടുക്കാം. നിങ്ങളുടെ ദൈവമായ യഹോവ നിങ്ങളുടെ ശത്രുക്കളിൽനിന്ന് നൽകിയ കൊള്ളവസ്തുക്കൾ നിങ്ങൾക്കനുഭവിക്കാം.
15 So you do to all the cities which are very far off from you, which are not of the cities of these nations.
നിങ്ങൾക്കു സമീപമുള്ള ഈ ജനതകളുടെ കൂട്ടത്തിൽ ഉൾപ്പെടാത്ത എല്ലാ വിദൂരനഗരങ്ങളോടും ഇങ്ങനെതന്നെയാണ് നിങ്ങൾ പ്രവർത്തിക്കേണ്ടത്.
16 Only, of the cities of these peoples which your God YHWH is giving to you [for] an inheritance, you do not keep alive any [that are] breathing;
നിങ്ങളുടെ ദൈവമായ യഹോവ നിങ്ങൾക്ക് അവകാശമായി നൽകുന്ന നഗരങ്ങളിലെ ശ്വാസമുള്ള യാതൊന്നിനെയും ജീവനോടെ ശേഷിപ്പിക്കരുത്.
17 for you certainly devote the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, and the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, as your God YHWH has commanded you,
ഹിത്യർ, അമോര്യർ, കനാന്യർ, പെരിസ്യർ, ഹിവ്യർ, യെബൂസ്യർ എന്നിവരെ നിങ്ങളുടെ ദൈവമായ യഹോവ കൽപ്പിച്ചതുപോലെ പൂർണമായി സംഹരിക്കണം.
18 so that they do not teach you to do according to all their abominations which they have done for their gods, and you have sinned against your God YHWH.
അല്ലാത്തപക്ഷം അവർ തങ്ങളുടെ ദേവാരാധനയിൽ ചെയ്യുന്ന മ്ലേച്ഛതകൾ പിൻതുടരാൻ നിങ്ങളെ പഠിപ്പിക്കും; നിങ്ങൾ നിങ്ങളുടെ ദൈവമായ യഹോവയ്ക്കു വിരോധമായി പാപം ചെയ്യാനിടയാകും.
19 When you lay siege to a city [for] many days to fight against it, to capture it, you do not destroy its trees to force an axe against them, for you eat of them, and you do not cut them down—for the tree of the field [is] man’s—to go in at your presence in the siege.
ഒരു നഗരം പിടിച്ചെടുക്കേണ്ടതിന് അതിനെതിരേ നിങ്ങൾക്കു യുദ്ധംചെയ്ത് ദീർഘകാലം ഉപരോധിക്കേണ്ടിവന്നാൽ അതിലുള്ള വൃക്ഷങ്ങൾ കോടാലികൊണ്ടു നശിപ്പിക്കരുത്. അവയുടെ ഫലം നിങ്ങൾക്കു ഭക്ഷിക്കാവുന്നതുകൊണ്ട് അതു വെട്ടിക്കളയരുത്. നീ അവയെ ഉപരോധിക്കാൻ ആ നിലത്തിലെ മരങ്ങൾ മനുഷ്യരാണോ?
20 Only, the tree of which you know that it [is] not a fruit-tree, you destroy it, and have cut [it] down, and have built a bulwark against the city which is making war with you until you have subdued it.”
എന്നാൽ ഭക്ഷ്യയോഗ്യമല്ലാത്ത ഫലങ്ങളുള്ള വൃക്ഷങ്ങൾമാത്രം വെട്ടിക്കളയുക. നിന്നോടു യുദ്ധംചെയ്യുന്ന നഗരം കീഴടങ്ങുംവരെ അവ ഉപയോഗിച്ച് നിനക്കു കൊത്തളങ്ങൾ നിർമിക്കാം.
