Deuteronomy 19
1 “When your God YHWH cuts off the nations whose land your God YHWH is giving to you, and you have dispossessed them, and dwelt in their cities and in their houses,
"Quand l’Éternel, ton Dieu, aura fait disparaître les peuples dont il te donne le territoire, quand tu les auras dépossédés et que tu seras établi dans leurs villes et dans leurs maisons,
2 you separate three cities for yourself in the midst of your land which your God YHWH is giving to you to possess it.
tu te réserveras trois villes dans ce pays dont l’Éternel, ton Dieu, t’accorde la possession.
3 You prepare the way for yourself, and have divided into three parts the border of your land which your God YHWH causes you to inherit, and it has been for the fleeing there of every manslayer.
Tu devras en faciliter l’accès et diviser en trois parts le territoire du pays que l’Éternel, ton Dieu, te fera échoir; et cela, pour que tout meurtrier s’y puisse réfugier.
4 And this [is] the matter of the manslayer who flees there, and has lived: he who strikes his neighbor unknowingly, and is not hating him before—
Or, voici dans quel cas le meurtrier, en s’y réfugiant, aura la vie sauve: s’il a frappé son prochain sans intention, n’ayant pas été son ennemi antérieurement.
5 even he who comes into a forest with his neighbor to hew wood, and his hand has driven with an axe to cut the tree, and the iron has slipped from the wood, and has met his neighbor, and he has died—he flees to one of these cities, and has lived,
Ainsi, il entre avec son compagnon dans la forêt pour abattre du bois; sa main brandissant la cognée pour couper l’arbre, le fer s’échappe du manche et atteint le compagnon, qui en meurt: l’autre alors pourra fuir dans une de ces villes et sauver sa vie.
6 lest the redeemer of blood pursue after the manslayer when his heart is hot and has overtaken him, because the way is great, and has struck his life, and he has no sentence of death, for he is not hating him before;
Autrement, le vengeur du sang pourrait, dans l’effervescence de son cœur, courir sus au meurtrier, l’atteindre si le chemin était long, et lui porter un coup mortel; et cependant, il ne méritait point la mort, puisqu’il ne haïssait pas l’autre antérieurement.
7 therefore I am commanding you, saying, You separate three cities for yourself.
C’Est pour cela que je te donne cet ordre: Réserve-toi trois villes.
8 And if your God YHWH enlarges your border, as He has sworn to your fathers, and has given to you all the land which He has spoken to give to your fathers—
Que si l’Éternel, ton Dieu, élargit ta frontière, comme il l’a juré à tes ancêtres, et te donne la région entière qu’il a déclaré octroyer à tes pères,
9 when you keep all this command to do it, which I am commanding you today, to love your God YHWH and to walk in His ways [for] all the days—then you have added three more cities for yourself to these three;
à condition que tu t’appliques à accomplir toute cette loi que je t’impose en ce jour, d’aimer l’Éternel, ton Dieu, et de marcher constamment dans ses voies, alors tu ajouteras encore trois villes à ces trois-là;
10 and [do this] lest innocent blood is shed in the midst of your land which your God YHWH is giving to you [for] an inheritance, and there has been blood on you.
afin que le sang innocent ne soit pas répandu au sein de ce pays que l’Éternel, ton Dieu, te donne pour héritage, et qu’une responsabilité sanglante ne pèse point sur toi.
11 And when a man is hating his neighbor, and has lain in wait for him, and risen against him, and struck his life, and he has died, then he has fled to one of these cities,
Mais si quelqu’un, animé de haine pour son prochain, le guette, se jette sur lui et le frappe de manière à lui donner la mort, puis se réfugie dans une des villes en question,
12 and [the] elderly of his city have sent and taken him from there, and given him into the hand of the redeemer of blood, and he has died;
les anciens de sa ville le feront extraire de là et le livreront au vengeur du sang pour qu’il meure.
13 your eye has no pity on him, and you have put away the innocent blood from Israel, and it is well with you.
Que ton œil soit sans pitié pour lui; tu feras disparaître d’Israël le sang innocent, et tu t’en trouveras bien.
14 You do not remove a border of your neighbor, which they of former times have made, in your inheritance, which you inherit in the land which your God YHWH is giving to you to possess it.
Ne déplace point la borne de ton voisin, telle que l’auront posée les devanciers, dans le lot qui te sera échu sur le territoire dont l’Éternel, ton Dieu, t’accorde la possession.
15 One witness does not rise against a man for any iniquity and for any sin, in any sin which he sins; by the mouth of two witnesses or by the mouth of three witnesses is a thing established.
Un témoignage isolé ne sera pas valable contre une personne, quel que soit le crime ou le délit, quelque faute qui lui soit imputée: c’est par la déposition de deux témoins, ou de trois, qu’un fait sera établi.
16 When a violent witness rises against a man to testify against him apostasy,
Si un témoin malveillant se présente contre un individu, pour l’accuser d’un méfait,
17 then both of the men who have the strife have stood before YHWH, before the priests and the judges who are in those days,
les deux personnes intéressées dans le débat comparaîtront devant l’Éternel, devant les pontifes et les juges en fonctions à cette époque.
18 and the judges have searched diligently, and behold, the witness [is] a false witness who has testified a falsehood against his brother,
Ceux-ci examineront attentivement; et si ce témoin est un faux témoin, si c’est un mensonge qu’il a articulé contre son frère,
19 then you have done to him as he devised to do to his brother, and you have put away evil out of your midst,
vous le traiterez comme il a eu dessein de faire traiter son frère, et tu extirperas le mal du milieu de toi.
20 and those who are left hear and fear, and do not add to do according to this evil thing in your midst anymore.
Les autres l’apprendront et seront intimidés, et l’on n’osera plus commettre une aussi mauvaise action chez toi.
21 And your eye does not pity—life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.”
Ne laisse donc point s’attendrir ton regard: vie pour vie, œil pour œil, dent pour dent, main pour main, pied pour pied!
