Deuteronomy 1
1 These [are] the words which Moses has spoken to all Israel beyond the Jordan in the wilderness, in the plain opposite Suph, between Paran, and Tophel, and Laban, and Hazeroth, and Di-Zahab.
Ce sont ici les discours que Moïse adressa à tout Israël au delà du Jourdain dans le désert, dans la plaine vis-à-vis de Suph entre Paran et Thophel et Laban et Hatseroth et Dizahab.
2 [It takes] eleven days [to go] from Horeb, the way of Mount Seir, to Kadesh-Barnea.
Il y a onze journées de marche de Horeb, par la route de la montagne de Séir, à Cadès-Barnéa.
3 And it comes to pass in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first of the month, Moses has spoken to the sons of Israel according to all that YHWH has commanded him concerning them,
Et dans la quarantième année, dans le onzième mois, le premier jour du mois, Moïse exposa aux enfants d'Israël toutes les choses dont l'Éternel l'avait chargé pour eux,
4 after his striking Sihon king of the Amorite who is dwelling in Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan who is dwelling in Ashtaroth in Edrei.
après qu'il eut défait Sihon, Roi des Amoréens, qui résidait à Hesbon, et Og, Roi de Basan, qui résidait à Astharoth, près de Edrei.
5 Beyond the Jordan, in the land of Moab, Moses has begun to explain this law, saying,
Au delà du Jourdain, dans le pays de Moab, Moïse commença à expliquer cette Loi en ces termes:
6 “Our God YHWH has spoken to us in Horeb, saying, For you dwell at this mountain long enough;
L'Éternel, notre Dieu, nous parla sur Horeb en ces termes:
7 turn and journey for yourselves, and go to the mountain of the Amorite, and to all its neighboring places in the plain, in the hill-country, and in the low country, and in the south, and in the haven of the sea, the land of the Canaanite, and of Lebanon, as far as the great river, the Euphrates River;
Vous avez assez séjourné dans cette montagne. Faisant volte-face mettez-vous en marche et gagnez les Monts Amoréens et tous les lieux adjacents de la plaine, de la montagne, du Pays-bas et du Midi et du bord de la mer, le pays des Cananéens et le Liban jusqu'au Grand-Fleuve, le fleuve Phrath.
8 see, I have set the land before you; go in and possess the land which YHWH has sworn to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give to them and to their seed after them.
Voici, je vous livre ce pays, marchez à la conquête du pays que l'Éternel a juré à vos pères, à Abraham, à Isaac et à Jacob de leur donner et à leur race après eux.
9 And I speak to you at that time, saying, I am not able to bear you by myself;
Et dans ce temps-là je vous dis: Je ne puis, à moi seul, être chargé de vous.
10 your God YHWH has multiplied you, and behold, today you [are] as the stars of the heavens for multitude;
L'Éternel, votre Dieu, vous a multipliés et voilà que vous êtes aujourd'hui égaux en nombre aux étoiles du ciel.
11 YHWH, God of your fathers, is adding to you, as you [are], one thousand times, and blesses you as He has spoken to you.
Que l'Éternel, Dieu de vos pères, augmente mille fois votre nombre présent, et qu'il vous bénisse, comme Il vous l'a promis.
12 How do I bear your pressure, and your burden, and your strife by myself?
Mais comment serais-je, à moi seul, chargé de votre poids et de votre fardeau et de vos contestations?
13 Provide wise and understanding men for yourselves that are known to your tribes, and I set them for your heads;
Donnez-vous donc des hommes sages, intelligents et connus tirés de vos Tribus, et je les mettrai à votre tête.
14 and you answer me and say, The thing which you have spoken [is] good to do.
Et vous me répondîtes et dîtes: La chose que tu nous proposes de faire est bonne.
15 And I take the heads of your tribes, wise men that are known, and I appoint them [as] heads over you, princes of thousands, and princes of hundreds, and princes of fifties, and princes of tens, and authorities for your tribes.
Alors je pris les chefs de vos Tribus, hommes sages et connus, et je les préposai sur vous comme supérieurs, comme chefs de mille, et chefs de cent, et chefs de cinquante, et chefs de dix, et comme officiers de vos Tribus.
16 And I command your judges at that time, saying, Listen between your brothers—then you have judged [in] righteousness between a man, and his brother, and his sojourner;
Et dans le même temps je donnai à vos Juges mes instructions en ces termes: Donnez audience à vos frères en cause l'un avec l'autre, et dites justice entre un homme et son prochain et son étranger;
17 you do not discern faces in judgment; you hear the little as well as the great; you are not afraid of the face of any, for the judgment is God’s, and the thing which is too hard for you, you bring near to me, and I have heard it.
ne faites point acception des personnes dans le jugement; écoutez le petit comme le grand; n'ayez peur de personne; car c'est le tribunal de Dieu. Et les causes qui seront trop difficiles pour vous, portez-les devant moi, pour que j'en connaisse.
18 And I command you at that time all the things which you do.
C'est ainsi que dans ce temps je vous prescrivis toutes les choses que vous aviez à faire.
19 And we journey from Horeb, and go [through] all that great and fearful wilderness which you have seen, the way of the hill-country of the Amorite, as our God YHWH has commanded us, and we come to Kadesh-Barnea.
Puis étant partis d'Horeb nous parcourûmes tout le désert, ce grand et affreux désert que vous avez vu sur le chemin des Monts Amoréens, ainsi que l'Éternel, notre Dieu, nous l'avait commandé, et nous arrivâmes à Cadès-Barnéa.
20 And I say to you, You have come to the hill-country of the Amorite, which our God YHWH is giving to us;
Et je vous dis: Vous êtes parvenus aux Monts Amoréens que l'Éternel, notre Dieu, va nous donner.
21 see, your God YHWH has set the land before you; go up, possess, as YHWH, God of your fathers, has spoken to you; do not fear, nor be frightened.
Vois, l'Éternel, ton Dieu, t'a livré ce pays, montes-y, fais-en la conquête, comme te l'a dit l'Éternel, Dieu de tes pères; sois sans crainte et sans peur.
22 And you come near to me, all of you, and say, Let us send men before us, and they search the land for us, and they bring us back word [concerning] the way in which we go up into it, and the cities to which we come in;
Alors vous vîntes tous vous présenter à moi, et vous dîtes: Envoyons des hommes en avant de nous, qui examinent pour nous ce pays, et reviennent nous informer de la route par où nous devons y monter et des villes où nous arriverons.
23 and the thing is good in my eyes, and I take twelve men from you, one man for the tribe.
Et j'agréai la chose, et je choisis parmi vous douze hommes, un homme par Tribu.
24 And they turn and go up to the hill-country, and come to the Valley of Eshcol, and spy it out,
Et ils partirent et gravirent la montagne, et s'avancèrent jusqu'à la vallée d'Escol, et ils firent la reconnaissance de ce pays.
25 and they take in their hand from the fruit of the land, and bring [it] down to us, and bring us back word, and say, The land is good which our God YHWH is giving to us.
Et ils prirent dans leurs mains des fruits de ce pays et nous les rapportèrent et nous rendirent compte en ces mots: C'est un bon pays que l'Éternel, notre Dieu, veut nous donner.
26 And you have not been willing to go up, and you provoke the mouth of your God YHWH,
Mais vous ne voulûtes pas y monter, et vous fûtes rebelles à l'ordre de l'Éternel, votre Dieu.
27 and murmur in your tents, and say, In YHWH’s hating us He has brought us out of the land of Egypt, to give us into the hand of the Amorite—to destroy us;
Et murmurant dans vos tentes vous dîtes: C'est parce que l'Éternel nous hait, qu'il nous a retirés du pays d'Egypte pour nous livrer aux mains des Amoréens, afin de nous détruire. Où irons-nous?
28 to where are we going up? Our brothers have melted our heart, saying, [The] people [are] greater and taller than we; [the] cities [are] great and fortified up to the heavens, and we have also seen sons of Anakim there.
Nos frères ont amolli notre courage en disant: C'est un peuple plus nombreux et de plus haute taille que nous, ce sont des villes grandes et fortifiées jusqu'au ciel; et nous y avons aussi vu les fils des Anakites.
29 And I say to you, Do not be terrified, nor be afraid of them;
Et je vous dis: Ne vous épouvantez pas et n'ayez pas peur d'eux.
30 your God YHWH, who is going before you—He fights for you, according to all that He has done with you in Egypt before your eyes,
L'Éternel, votre Dieu, qui marche à votre tête, combattra lui-même pour vous, comme Il a toujours fait pour vous en Egypte à vos yeux,
31 and in the wilderness where you have seen that your God YHWH has carried you, as a man carries his son, in all the way which you have gone until your coming to this place.
et dans le désert où tu as vu que l'Éternel, ton Dieu, t'a porté ainsi qu'un père porte son fils, tout le long de la route que vous avez parcourue, jusqu'à votre arrivée en ce lieu.
32 And in this thing you are not steadfast in your God YHWH,
Mais malgré cela vous n'eûtes pas foi dans l'Éternel, votre Dieu,
33 who is going before you in the way to search out for you a place for your encamping, in fire by night, to show you in the way in which you go, and in a cloud by day.
qui vous précédait dans le trajet pour vous explorer un lieu où pouvoir camper, la nuit dans la colonne de feu pour vous faire voir la route que vous aviez à suivre, et le jour dans la nuée.
34 And YHWH hears the voice of your words, and is angry, and swears, saying,
Et l'Éternel entendit vos propos et se courrouça et prononça ce serment:
35 Not one of these men of this evil generation sees the good land which I have sworn to give to your fathers,
Pas un de ces hommes dans cette race méchante ne verra ce beau pays que je promis par serment, de donner à leurs pères,
36 except Caleb son of Jephunneh—he sees it, and to him I give the land on which he has trodden, and to his sons, because that he has been fully after YHWH.
sauf Caleb, fils de Jephunné; lui, il le verra et je lui donnerai la contrée qu'il a touchée de ses pieds, ainsi qu'à ses fils, parce qu'il a eu pour l'Éternel une pleine obéissance.
37 Moreover, YHWH has been angry with me for your sake, saying, Indeed, you do not go in there;
Même contre moi l'Éternel fut irrité à cause de vous et Il dit: Toi non plus tu n'y entreras pas;
38 Joshua son of Nun, who is standing before you, he goes in there; strengthen him, for he causes Israel to inherit [it].
Josué, fils de Nun, qui se tient debout en ta présence, lui, y entrera; encourage-le, car c'est lui qui en fera le partage à Israël.
39 And your infants, of whom you have said, They are for a prey, and your sons who today have not known good and evil, they go in there, and I give it to them, and they possess it;
Et vos enfants desquels vous dites qu'ils seront un butin, et vos fils qui aujourd'hui n'ont pas la connaissance du bien et du mal, ce sont eux qui y entreront, et c'est à eux que je le donnerai, et eux qui en feront la conquête.
40 but you, turn and journey for yourselves toward the wilderness, the way of the Red Sea.
Quant à vous, faites volte-face et partez pour le désert du côté de la Mer aux algues.
41 And you answer and say to me, We have sinned against YHWH; we go up and we have fought, according to all that which our God YHWH has commanded us; and you each gird on his weapons of war, and you are ready to go up into the hill-country;
Alors vous répondîtes et me dîtes: Nous avons péché contre l'Éternel, nous irons en avant et nous battrons absolument comme l'Éternel, notre Dieu, nous l'a commandé. Et vous ceignîtes chacun ses armes, et eûtes la témérité de vous avancer dans la montagne.
42 and YHWH says to me, Say to them, You do not go up, nor fight, for I am not in your midst, and you are not struck before your enemies.
Et l'Éternel me dit: Dis-leur: N'avancez pas, et ne livrez pas bataille, car je ne suis pas au milieu de vous, afin que vous ne soyez pas mis en déroute par vos ennemis.
43 And I speak to you, and you have not listened, and provoke the mouth of YHWH, and act proudly, and go up into the hill-country;
Et je vous parlai, mais vous n'écoutâtes point et vous contrevîntes à l'ordre de l'Éternel, et vous eûtes l'audace de vous avancer dans la montagne.
44 and the Amorite who is dwelling in that hill-country comes out to meet you, and they pursue you as the bees do, and strike you in Seir, even to Hormah.
Alors les Amoréens, habitants de cette montagne, sortirent à votre rencontre, et vous donnèrent la chasse comme font les abeilles et ils vous défirent en Séir jusqu'à Horma.
45 And you return and weep before YHWH, and YHWH has not listened to your voice, nor has He given ear to you;
Et vous revîntes et pleurâtes devant l'Éternel, mais l'Éternel n'écouta point votre voix et ne prit point garde à vous.
46 and you dwell in Kadesh [for] many days, according to the days which you had dwelt.”
Ainsi vous restâtes longtemps à Cadès, le temps que vous y avez passé.
